College Football Bowl Results: Central Michigan edges Western Kentucky 24-21

DETROIT (AP) — Coaching for one game before moving on to an uncertain future, Lance Guidry had to make a crucial decision with the game on the line.

Fourth down, 51 seconds remaining. Kick a and play for overtime, or go for the win?

“That was all the players. We were going to kick the , but they told me that they were here to win the game,” Guidry said. “I asked everyone and they wanted to go for it so we took the chance.”

The went for it and the move backfired when Kawaun Jakes threw incomplete on fourth-and-2 from the 19-yard line, giving a 24-21 win Wednesday night in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. Even so, there was little regret afterward.

“I’m going to get back to my family, because I haven’t seen them in a while,” Guidry said. “Then I’m off to the coaches’ convention to try to find a job.”

Guidry was Western Kentucky’s , but he was put in charge on an for this bowl after coach Willie Taggart left to take over the program at South Florida. Next season, will coach the .

The finish to this game — Western Kentucky’s first bowl since joining ’s top tier in 2009 — won’t be forgotten any time soon. Ryan Radcliff had thrown an 11-yard to Cody Wilson with 5:11 remaining to give (7-6) the lead, but the Hilltoppers (7-6) drove back down the field until their chances ended when Jakes’ pass intended for Jack Doyle fell incomplete.

“I don’t know what I would have done,” Central Dan Enos said. “But I will never second-guess a coach for trying to win.”

Radcliff went 19 of 29 for 253 yards and three touchdowns, but Central Michigan needed to rally late.

Down 21-17, Zurlon Tipton appeared to have put the Chippewas ahead in the , but his fourth-down run was ruled short of the after a review.

“When we didn’t get the touchdown, we knew we had to stop them right there,” linebacker Shamari Benton said. “We knew that we just needed to give the offense one more shot.”

Central Michigan forced the Hilltoppers to punt from their own end zone, and Avery Cunningham partially blocked it. Although the ball bounced around for a bit, the Chippewas finally secured it and took over with great field position inside the 30.

Radcliff found Wilson in the back left corner of the end zone for a 24-21 lead.

Petrino, the Hilltoppers’ coach-in-waiting, was expected to be at Ford Field watching his new team, but a snowstorm forced him to scrap those plans. Western Kentucky started aggressively.

Down 7-0, the Hilltoppers ran a flea-flicker on their first play from scrimmage, with Antonio Andrews running to his right, then tossing the ball back to Jakes, who found Rico Brown for a 70-yard gain.

Two plays later, Jakes scored on a 6-yard run to tie it.

Central Michigan answered with a 73-yard drive that ended with Andrew Flory’s 29- reception, his second of the quarter.

David Harman’s 50-yard field goal put the Chippewas up 17-7, but Jakes threw a 6-yard touchdown pass to Doyle, with the tight end making a one-handed catch to pull Western Kentucky within three.

Harman had a field goal blocked later in the half, and although the Chippewas were in range for another attempt in the final minute, Radcliff was sacked and fumbled. He was able to recover, but the last few seconds of the half ticked off.

Western Kentucky took a 21-17 lead in the third on a 1-yard scoring run by Kadeem Jones, which capped an 80-yard drive that used 9:23.

Andrews rushed for 119 yards, but he fell short of the 274 all-purpose yards he needed to break the single-season record of 3,250 set by Oklahoma State’s Barry Sanders in 1988. Andrews, a junior, had 184 all-purpose yards to finish the season at 3,161.

“I fell short this year, but I’ll be going for that record again next year,” he said.

Central Michigan took a 7-0 lead on a 69-yard touchdown pass from Radcliff to Flory. Western Kentucky safety Jonathan Dowling whiffed on a tackle near midfield, and Flory was gone.

Dowling had a chance to make up for that mistake early in the third quarter, but with his team down 17-14, he dropped an interception near midfield that he could have easily returned for a touchdown.

The win snapped Wisconsin’s 33-game non-conference winning streak, the second-longest in the country behind LSU.

Wisconsin finished with 207 yards and only 35 on the ground. It was the lowest total yards for Wisconsin in five years. The previous non-conference loss for Wisconsin (1-1) came early in the 2003 season when the Badgers lost to UNLV.

It took 41 years for a Big Ten team to visit Corvallis after Iowa was handed a 33-19 loss in 1971. With this kind of reception from the Beavers, it might be 41 more.

The Hokies (2-0), long noted for their special teams play, finally put together a 71-yard drive in the closing 1:32 of the first half. That was followed by an 80-yard scoring march on their second possession of the second half for a 28-0 lead, and the rout of an overmatched FCS opponent was finally on.

The Governors (0-2) responded with a six-play, 78-yard drive of their own to extend their string of consecutive games without being shut out to 75. Wes Kitts had a 32-yard run on the drive to go over 100 yards for the second consecutive week, and Terrence Oliver scored on an 8-yard run.

Purdue (1-1) tied the game at 17-17 when Caleb TerBush threw a 15-yard TD pass to Antavian Edison with 2:12 left, the score set up by Josh Johnson’s recovery of a fumble by Golson. He was shaken up on the play and the Irish turned to Rees.

Rees connected on key third down passes of 10 yards to John Goodman and 21 yards to Robby Toma to get Brindza in position for the game-winning kick. Notre Dame is 2-0 for the first time since 2008.

Florida trailed 17-10 at halftime after a first half where Texas A&M’s offense under new coach Kevin Sumlin pretty much did what it wanted. Things changed in the second half as the Gators clamped down and forced punts each of A&M’s six possessions after the break.

Caleb Sturgis helped Florida cut A&M’s lead to 17-13 with a 25-yard field goal early in the third quarter.

Florida quarterback Jeff Driskel looked indecisive most of the day and was sacked eight times. But he made a play when he had to, finding Omarius Hines on a 39-yard completion to propel a drive early in the fourth quarter.

Texas A&M freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel threw for 173 yards and ran for 60 more, but he couldn’t move A&M’s offense after halftime.

NO. 25 STANFORD 50, DUKE 13

STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Drew Terrell returned a punt 75 yards for a score and caught a 19-yard touchdown pass and Ed Reynolds took one of his two interceptions for another touchdown as Stanford rebounded from a disappointing opener.

Josh Nunes completed 16 of 30 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns, showing more flair in his second start since No. 1 overall pick Andrew Luck left for the NFL. The redshirt junior overcame his first interception to move the Cardinal (2-0) offense with a strong and steady hand that never surfaced in a 20-17 win over San Jose State last week.

Jordan Richards picked off a pass by Duke’s Sean Renfree to highlight a dominant defensive effort by Stanford in a final tuneup before hosting No. 2 Southern California next week.

The Cardinal held the (1-1) to 27 yards rushing and forced three turnovers.

(PhatzRadio / ) — The ’ feverish attempts to complete a complex deal to acquire Courtney Lee from the appeared to implode Thursday. The Celtics were able to revive the deal with a little help from the .

Boston completed the multi-team, sign-and-trade deal Friday to bring in the fifth-year shooting guard.

The Rockets will receive forward JaJuan Johnson, guard E’Twaun Moore, forward Sean Williams and a second-round pick (originally owned by the ) from the Celtics. Houston will also acquire the rights to guard Jon Diebler from the Trail Blazers. The Celtics will complete the deal by sending guard Sash Pavlovic to Portland.

Both Moore and Williams have non-guaranteed deals and are expected to be waived by Houston. Johnson has a guaranteed deal and has already made it known he’d like a trade from Houston.

The outgoing salary in Boston gets the deal valuation up over $4.7 million and closer to the $5 million per year Lee’s camp was seeking. Sources close to the process said Thursday that the reported $3 million per year number kicked around when the story broke was “way off,” refusing to disclose the full amount because the situation was clearly still in flux.

Several outlets reported that Boston is giving Lee a fully guaranteed four-year $21.5 million.

Lee, a first-round draft pick by the out of in 2008, announced that he had signed on his Twitter account earlier Friday, before the teams wrapped up the other details of the deal.

“Want to thank all the in Houston friends and fans,” Lee wrote. “Enjoyed my time. Also would like to thank all the Cs fans for the love.”

Houston previously withdrew a qualifying offer for Lee, which made him an unrestricted . The 6-foot-5 Lee played two seasons in Houston, averaging 9.6 points and 2.6 rebounds in 139 .

Lee is a career 38.6% three-point shooter and should help fill the void left by Ray Allen’s departure. Boston also signed free-agent guard Jason Terry.

The Celtics have had eyes for Courtney from the very beginning of free agency, and Lee has a long history with Celtics coach Doc Rivers.

“We are very excited that we were able to acquire Courtney Lee,” Celtics president of operations Danny Ainge said in a statement released Friday night. “Courtney brings a vast set of tools on both ends of the court and will be a great fit on our roster.”

The Rockets, meanwhile, continued to reshape their roster after introducing Jeremy Lin at a press conference on Thursday. Houston is also expected to sign Bulls center Omer Asik to a three-year, $25 million offer sheet.

The 6-foot-10 Johnson averaged 3.2 points and 1.6 rebounds in 36 games as a rookie for the Celtics last season. He was named the Big Ten’s top player and best defensive player as a senior at Purdue in 2010-11, becoming only the third player in the conference’s history to win both awards in the same season.

The 6-4 Moore was Johnson’s teammate at Purdue. He was chosen 55th overall by the Celtics in 2011. The 6-10 Williams has played for New Jersey, Dallas and Boston in 137 career NBA games. He was taken 17th overall by the Nets in the 2007 draft.

Diebler, a three-point specialist, was a second-round pick by Portland in 2011. The 6-6 guard played for the Greek team Panionios last year after setting the Big Ten record for three-pointers made as a senior (114) at Ohio State. He also led the nation in three-point shooting in 2010-11 (.502).

Brandon Davies added 18 points and Damarcus Harrison 12 for the 14th-seeded Cougars (26-8), who advanced to play third-seeded Marquette on Thursday in Louisville, Ky.

Iona came in as the nation’s top-scoring team at 83.2 points per game and didn’t disappoint — at least in the early going. The scored 55 points in the first 16 minutes, then managed just three field goals and seven points over the next 16½ minutes.

BYU held the Gaels without a point for 9:20 in an 17-0 run to narrow the deficit to 62-61 midway through the second half. With 2:26 left, Hartsock hit a go-ahead 3 for the Cougars’ first lead of the game.

WESTERN KENTUCKY 59, 58

T.J. Price’s three-point play with 33 seconds left completed a furious rally from a 16-, and Western Kentucky held on to beat .

President and David Cameron had front-row seats to see the tournament open with a ragged game that had a record finish. It was the biggest margin overcome by a team in the final 5 minutes to win an NCAA tournament game, the organization said.

The Hilltoppers (16-18) are the longest of long shots, the only squad in the 68-team field with a losing record. They turned up the full-court pressure in the last 5 minutes, overcoming a 16-point deficit with a comeback that won over the crowd at University of Dayton Arena.

Western Kentucky won despite shooting 30 percent from the field and turning it over 28 times. The Hilltoppers move on to play Kentucky — the top seed in the South Regional — on Thursday in Louisville, an all-Bluegrass game for the second round.

Kevin Burwell scored 20 points for MVSU (21-13).

March Madness begins: Teams of 68

63123f639800b3dcd80da38b88e8cc56 March Madness begins: Teams of 68

(PhatzRadio / SI) — The madness in began before the brackets even came out. Kentucky, Syracuse and North Carolina all earned top seeding for the Sunday despite weekend losses that brought even more intrigue to the three-week, 67-game tournament.

Michigan State earned the other No. 1 seed and was the only one of the four top-billed teams to win its conference tournament. The defeated Ohio State 68-64 in the Big Ten title game – a contest widely viewed as the game for the last No. 1 seed.

Next up, the – a 68-team free-for-all that starts with first-round Tuesday. That’s the first step en route to the , which begins March 31 in New Orleans.

Kentucky and Syracuse each enter the tournament with only two losses. Both were shoo-ins for top seeds – chair Jeff Hathaway all but said so last week – though their recent losses certainly will add more guesswork to those millions of brackets being filled out at sites, corporate board rooms and everywhere else across America.

Syracuse fell to Cincinnati in the Big East semifinals on Friday; Kentucky lost to Vanderbilt in the game, and the Tar Heels lost to Florida State in the ACC finals Sunday. Combined with Kansas’ loss to Baylor in the Big 12 semifinals, this marked only the second time since 2003 that the top four teams in The poll all lost in the same week.

Kentucky, placed in the South region, earned the overall No. 1 seed and will open the tournament against the winner of a first-round game between and . No. 8 seed Iowa State will play Connecticut. Elsewhere in the South, No. 5 plays No. 12 VCU, a team last year, while No. 4 Indiana plays No. 13 New Mexico State.

On the bottom of that bracket, No. 2 Duke plays No. 15 Lehigh, and No. 7 Notre Dame plays No. 10 Xavier, while No. 3 Baylor plays No. 14 South Dakota State and sixth-seeded UNLV plays 11th-seeded Colorado, which won its way into the bracket by winning the Pac-12 tournament.

In the West, top-seeded Michigan State will begin its quest for its seventh Final Four since 1999 against No. 16 LIU. No. 8 Memphis plays No. 9 St. Louis, as Rick Majerus takes his third team to the NCAA tournament. No. 5 New Mexico plays No. 12 Long Beach State, and No. 4 Louisville plays No. 13 Davidson.

The bottom of the bracket features No. 2 Missouri against No. 15 Norfolk State and No. 7 Florida against No. 10 Virginia. No. 6 Murray State plays No. 11 Colorado State, and No. 3 Marquette will play the winner of a first-round game between 14 seeds and bubble team Iona.

In the East region, No. 1 Syracuse plays No. 16 UNC Asheville and No. 8 Kansas State plays No. 9 Southern Mississippi. No. 5 Vanderbilt plays No. 12 Harvard, and No. 4 Wisconsin plays No. 13 Montana.

On the bottom, No. 2 Ohio State plays No. 15 Loyola (Md.), No. 7 Gonzaga plays No. 10 West Virginia, No. 3 Florida State plays No. 14 St. Bonaventure and No. 6 Cincinnati plays No. 11 Texas, which made it off the bubble.

In the Midwest, No. 1 North Carolina will play the winner of a first-round game between 16 seeds Lamar and Vermont. No. 8 Creighton will play No. 9 Alabama. No. 5 Temple meets the winner of 12 seeds California and South Florida and No. 4 Michigan plays No. 13 Ohio.

No. 2 Kansas meets No. 15 Detroit on the bottom of the bracket, and No. 7 Saint Mary’s plays No. 10 Purdue; No. 3 Georgetown plays No. 14 Belmont, and No. 6 San Diego State plays No. 11 N.C. State.

Among the bubble teams left out were Drexel, Miami, Northwestern, Seton Hall, Mississippi State, Nevada and Washington. The Huskies of the Pac-12 became the first team to win a regular-season title in a power conference and miss the tournament.

Glory Johnson scored 13 points to lead Tennessee. The Lady Vols hadn’t dropped a SEC game at home since a loss to LSU on Feb. 14, 2008, but have struggled in the first season since coach Pat Summitt announced she’d been diagnosed with early onset dementia.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Freshman Bria Goss scored 19 points and No. 6 Kentucky matched its best start ever with a victory over Mississippi.

The Wildcats (21-2, 10-0 Southeastern Conference) equaled the 1982-83 team and are looking to do something that team couldn’t — win an SEC championship to join the school’s only other title team from the 1981-82 season.

Kentucky forced Mississippi (12-11, 2-8) into 36 turnovers, the most in a conference game this season, and didn’t skip a beat even though leading scorer A’dia Mathies had an off night. Mathies, averaging 15.4 points, went 2 of 14 from the field and finished with 11 points.

She hit a jumper six seconds into the game, and in the first 3:39, had four field goals to give Maryland (19-3, 6-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) a 13-4 lead.

The Terps avoided their first three-game losing streak in nearly two years.

Delaware’s zone defense limited the Seahawks to a 20-for-58 (34.5 percent) night from the field and kept the Blue Hens out of foul trouble. They committed only seven fouls for the game.
