(PhatzRadio / ) — LAS VEGAS – By vanquishing chief rival at Saturday night’s 148 event, (32-4 , 15-0 ) moved one step closer to cleaning out the company’s 185-.

In the past, every Silva win meant post-fight questions regarding a potential bout with champ Georges St-Pierre, but nowadays, MMA fans and pundits alike only want to know if “The Spider” will ever face 205-pound titleholder Jon Jones.

Both Silva and Jones have expressed no interest in such a superfight, but UFC president Dana White doesn’t seem quite so sure.

“He said he wouldn’t fight Chael again, either,” White said with a smile following Saturday night’s post-event press conference.

Silva, of course, first defeated Sonnen in August 2010 at UFC 117. Sonnen then spent the next two years berating Silva, his family and his until finally earning a rematch in the of Saturday’s UFC 148 event, which took place at Las Vegas’ Arena and aired on pay-per-view. Of course, Silva only accepted the fight after ample encouragement from the UFC boss, who admitted Silva wanted no part of granting Sonnen the that came along with a rematch.

White admitted he’s been forced to take similar actions in the past, including Silva’s previous forays to light heavyweight in wins over and James Irvin.

“The two times he went to 205, it wasn’t because he wanted to,” White said. “It was because I asked him to.”

White and Silva haven’t always been on the best of terms. The champ’s infamous UFC 112 win over Demian Maia left the UFC boss so frustrated he threatened to cut his champion, even after a win. However, the UFC boss insisted on Saturday that he has the utmost respect for Silva and actually enjoys the process of determining his future matchups.

“Anderson is such a unique guy to deal with,” White said. “It’s such a different process when I’m dealing with this guy. I respect him so much. I swear to God, it’s like dealing with an artist. It’s like dealing with an artist or some big, crazy-talented actor.

“But I love being involved in every aspect of the business with this guy. I love to watch him fight. I love the anticipation and the build-up. To watch this guy do what he does is seriously one of my favorite [expletive] parts of my job. I love it. This guy is my favorite fighter. He really is. And as hard as he is to deal with, I just love it. I love dealing with him.”

But with Silva’s incredible track record in the octagon – 15-consecutive wins and an unparalleled 10 successful defenses of the middleweight belt – many fans are concerned there are simply no realistic challenges remaining for the champ at 185 pounds.

White is quick to point out names such as Michael Bisping, Hector Lombard and Mark Munoz as potential future opponents for Silva and also thinks there’s something to be said for a fighter who continuously devours his competition.

“He’s our Mike Tyson,” White said. “The guy is unstoppable, unbeatable. Now it’s like, ‘Who can challenge him? Who can beat him?’ I don’t know. Let’s find out. The first time they fought, no one thought Chael would do that.”

But if those names are scratched off the list, as well, and if Jones gets by Dan Henderson in September and then whoever else the UFC deems fit at 205 pounds, is a potential Silva vs. Jones superfight at least a possibility, despite the two champions’ insistence that they’re not interested?

“Let’s see what happens,” White said with a wry smile.

PARIS (AP) – After a at her last , Sam Stosur is very much in the mix again at the French Open.

Stosur, who followed her 2011 U.S. Open title with a first-round loss at the Australian Open in January, made the semifinals at Roland Garros with a 6-4, 6-1 victory Tuesday over No. 15 seed Dominika Cibulkova.

The sixth-seeded Aussie will play No. 21 Sara Errani of Italy, who made her first Grand Slam semifinal with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) victory over 10th-seeded .

Stosur leads the series 5-0, including a 6-3, 7-5 victory earlier this year on clay in Rome.

Stosur’s match against Cibulkova was pretty much drama free, save a minor blip in the second set when, trailing 1-0, she faced three at love-40. But she won 13 of the next 14 points to take control and wound up winning the match’s last six games. Stosur made only four in the second set.

“Today, in tough moments, she gave me so many good winners, so many lines, and it was just everything going her way,” Cibulkova said.

Stosur was the French Open runner-up to in 2010 and made the semifinals in 2009.

“The last few years have been very good to me in Paris,” Stosur said. “I love playing in Paris and it doesn’t get any better than this.”

Errani won her first career match in 29 tries against a top-10 player. The second set included eight total breaks, including twice by Errani when Kerber served for the set.

Playing in her 19th career major tournament, Errani beat two past French in her previous two matches: 2008′s and 2009′s Svetlanta Kuznetsova.

The men’s quarterfinals followed the women’s matches, with top-seeded playing No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and No. 3 going against No. 9 Juan Martin del Potro.

PARIS (AP) – Victoria Azarenka did damage to her racket but had no such success against her opponent.

The No. 1 seed at the French Open fell 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) to 15th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova on a windy, gray day at Roland Garros in which the world’s top-ranked player hardly looked the part.

Men’s No. 1 of Serbia nearly joined Azarenka on the sidelines, rallying from two sets down to defeat of Italy 4-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-3, 7-5, 6-3.

Azarenka, who won the to start the 2012 Grand Slam season, pulled out a that went nine deuces and took 15 minutes but didn’t capture any momentum from that.

Cibulkova rolled off six of the next seven to take the first set. Then, she came back for a 3-2 lead after falling down a break early in the second. Azarenka bashed her racket into the ground during the changeover and received a warning for racket abuse.

Her frustration was still showing after the match, when, asked what she would do to recover from the loss, she answered sarcastically.

“I’m going to kill myself,” she said. “This tournament is over for me. What’s to recover from? It’s (time) to really look forward and improve. That’s it.”

Down 6-3 in the second-set tiebreaker, Azarenka saved one . But on the second, Cibulkova drew her to net with a drop shot, then passed her easily for the winner. The Slovakian dropped onto the to celebrate. She had taken Azarenka to three sets the last five times they played, but her only victory in that streak came in 2008 at Amelia Island— the last time they met on clay.

“Before, I was at least making something happen myself,” Azarenka said, when asked about those previous three-setters. “Today I couldn’t do it. All I could hope for is for her mistake. I couldn’t make anything myself today.”

Azarenka joins a large group of so-called favorites on the sidelines. The Williams sisters, former No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki and former champions and Francesca Schiavone are among those already gone with the second week just getting under way.

Another former champion, Svetlana Kuznetsova, lost Sunday to 21st-seeded of Italy.

Five women have won the last five Grand Slam titles and the last four majors have been won by first-time champions. The only former champion left in the draw is Li Na.

“I’m happy and curious,” said Errani, now in her second consecutive Grand Slam quarterfinal. “The strongest sensation is curiosity — to see how far I can go, and up to what level I can arrive. Even I don’t really know.”

Errani’s next opponent is 10th-seeded , a 6-3, 7-5 winner over Petra Martic. Kerber had only one victory in her previous four appearances at Roland Garros. She now finds herself two wins away from playing for the title and wondering: Why not her?

“It’s a new situation,” Kerber said. “I’ve played good from the beginning of the year. I think the players know right now who I am, and, yeah, I think nobody wants to play against me right now.”

(PhatzRadio / ) — CHESTER, Pa. – After surrendering a goal on one of several in the first half, the U.S. women’s team gave the of 18,573 what it came to see — precision striking from , a late goal from and the occasional glimpse of goalkeeper Hope Solo in a 4-1 victory against China.

But the defense may be a concern as the team heads into the Olympics with the players named Sunday by coach Pia Sundhage.

The allows only 18 players instead of the 21-player limit in the Women’s World Cup. Goalkeeper Jill Loyden and midfielder Lori Lindsey were both named Olympic alternates. Sundhage’s other two cuts were defenders —Ali Krieger, who excelled in Germany but is just returning from a right ACL injury, and veteran Stephanie Cox.

PHOTOS: of Hope Solo

Those cuts leave only six defenders, including converted midfielder Kelley O’Hara. Though left back O’Hara is the relative newcomer among the starting back four, China found success attacking the other flank, where had trouble containing the inventive and speedy Chinese attack.

“We were trying to push forward the first 10 minutes,” said captain and Christie Rampone. “Not everybody was on the same page.”

China’s Han Peng found acres of space early in the game but opted to pass rather than shoot at Solo. Zhang Rui found herself in a similar situation in the 22nd minute and made the smarter decision, burying the shot past Solo to the .

“For some reason this team likes to get itself in some interesting predicaments, and we like to work our way out of those,” Wambach said.

Sundhage saw the early struggles going beyond the defense.

“I’m more concerned with the fact that we didn’t keep the ball,” she said. “The whole game was good because we made some changes at halftime and we talked about it. Kelley O’Hara wasn’t even involved in the attack in the first half, but in the second half, she was up and down the flank. We could control the tempo and kept the ball, so it was better in the second half.”

With Cox and Krieger off the roster, Sundhage has few options on either side of the defense. Becky Sauerbrunn, who played centrally as a second-half substitute alongside starter Rachel Buehler, could move out to one of the flanks if needed. The only other defender on the bench is Heather Mitts, who fought back from injury to make the 2011 World Cup squad but has played little over the past two years.

Sunday, the concern was easy to forget. China, which has steadily plummeted from its position as a world power, has defensive defiencies of its own, and the USA exploited them with ease.

The first goal, in the 34th minute, was a beauty — Morgan collected a deflected cross and curled a low shot to the . The second goal two minutes later was ugly — a few players whiffed on the ball in the air, and it bounced off Chinese captain Zhou Gaoping and slowly rolled in as the defense watched helplessly.

Early in the second half, Morgan ran onto a long ball over the top from Rampone, held off a defender and expertly finished.

“She’s so strong on a one-v-one opportunity,” Wambach said. “Before she got in behind the defender on the third goal, my hand was straight in the air. I knew she was going to score.”

The Chinese team mounted little attack the rest of the way and failed to track Wambach on a late throw-in, giving her a chance to power past a defender and drill the ball into the upper netting.

The only player on the Olympic roster who was not on the World Cup squad is young forward Sydney Leroux, who played the last 10 minutes as the USA went with an attacking lineup despite the two-goal lead. Her shot in the 86th minute produced the best save of the game by Chinese goalkeeper Zhang Yue.

(PhatzRadio / ) — WASHINGTON – It would have been easy to write off the Washington Capitals after Monday’s loss in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.

They wouldn’t beat the New York Rangers two nights after suffering their most excruciating loss of the season.

They didn’t have one more comeback in them as they faced elimination.

RESULTS: Capitals 2, Rangers 1

Rookie netminder Braden Holtby had stolen some games for the Caps this postseason, but he couldn’t stand on his head again.

Not so fast.

Washington scored early and held onto the lead en route to a 2-1 win in Game 6 at the Verizon Center. The series will come down to Saturday night’s in New York.

“I think everyone’s been counting us out since the beginning of the playoffs,” said Capitals forward Joel Ward, whose four-minute high-sticking penalty at the end of Game 5 cost Washington that game. “(But) within ourselves, we’re very confident in ourselves and our abilities.

“Every game, I feel like we’ve been in it. It’s just been a matter of a couple of bounces here or there.”

On Wednesday, the bounced in Washington’s favor.

scored 88 seconds into the game on a one-timer from the slot that beat Rangers goaltender . The team that has scored first in each game of this series has gone on to win the game, and that trend held true .

Jason Chimera gave the Caps a little more with a goal nearly 11 minutes into the .

Washington’s rare two-goal lead survived a four-minute high-sticking penalty to Rangers forward John Mitchell late in the second period — a penalty reminiscent of the one to Ward that cost Washington in the final minute of regulation and in overtime in Game 5.

Instead of giving up two goals like last time, the Caps killed the penalty with relative ease, even getting some short-handed opportunities during the process. As the penalty time expired on the Verizon Center scoreboard, Caps fans erupted in cheers.

“That was a huge kill by our penalty kill,” said a relieved Halpern after the game. “It’s a long four minutes in the box.”

Said Karl Alzner: “It was a huge momentum swing.”

Rangers coach John Tortorella was more blunt about his team’s missed opportunity to get back in the game. “Kills you,” he said.

From that point on, the Capitals played like they knew they were going to win the game. A two-goal margin can provide that confidence. So can a hot goalie.

Though the Rangers would ultimately spoil Holtby’s shutout bid with a Marian Gaborik goal in the game’s final minute, the goalie undoubtedly shined with his 30-save performance Wednesday night. In his 29 starts, Holtby has not lost back-to-back games.

Holtby’s luck — and ability to rebound — has spread to the rest of the team, too. Washington is 4-0 this postseason after an overtime loss, and it hasn’t lost two games in a row since late March.

“They battled again,” Capitals coach Dale Hunter said. “Says a lot about the character we have in that (locker) room.”

The Capitals staved off elimination against the Boston Bruins in their opening series’ Game 7, and they’ll try to do the same against the Rangers at 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday. The winner of that game will face the New Jersey Devils in the Eastern Conference final.

Washington hopes to make it two wins in a row with its back against the wall.

“We’re resilient,” Alzner said. “We have that thick skin. We know when to battle back when we need to and have to.”

WASHINGTON (AP) – A few seasons ago, when Alex Ovechkin, and Mike Green were helping the Washington Capitals finally start to emerge from years of rebuilding with a go-go, attacking style, the team promoted its high-scoring with the slogan “.”

These days, the Capitals are succeeding in the playoffs with a more conservative, defensive-minded style — and it still never hurts when the best of the best put the in the net.

Green’s slap shot on a power play with 5:48 left in regulation was the go-ahead goal, and Ovechkin and Backstrom scored Saturday, too, lifting the Capitals to a 3-2 victory against the top-seeded New York Rangers that tied their Eastern Conference semifinal series at two games apiece.

BOX SCORE: Capitals 3, Rangers 2

COLUMN: Predators need some offense to stay alive

When the bygone marketing tag was mentioned afterward in the loud Capitals locker room, 26-year-old Green repeated the news reporter’s words, saying with a wry smirk: ” ‘’? Not so young anymore. But we needed to step up.”

According to STATS LLC, it was the 13th time in their Capitals careers — all were first-round — that Ovechkin, Backstrom and Green scored in the , but the first in the postseason. Washington’s record in those games? Not surprisingly, 13-0. That trio last tallied together Oct. 30, 2010, STATS said.

“People have been talking about (how) we need to step up,” said Backstrom, who missed 40 games in the regular season with a concussion and hadn’t scored since Game 2 of the opening round against Boston. “If you work hard, good things happen to you, somebody told me.”

Ovechkin made it 1-0 about 12½ minutes into the game with a 40-foot slap shot after Rangers rookie Chris Kreider accidentally sent the puck to the two-time NHL MVP’s stick. In the second period, Ovechkin’s skates left the ice as he delivered a high hit to Dan Girardi, a play that resulted in a charging penalty against the Russian wing and could draw attention from the league office.

“My head’s kind of there, and he hits it,” Girardi said.

Ovechkin, treated for a bloody upper lip in the third period, said he was trying to protect himself and thought he caught Girardi in the shoulder, not the head.

Said Capitals coach Dale Hunter: “It was incidental contact, where both of them were looking down and they hit each other.”

Rangers coach John Tortorella’s take? Who knows? He declined to answer a general question about the officiating and walked out of his news conference after about 30 seconds.

On the go-ahead goal, Rangers captain Ryan Callahan got knocked down along the boards and lost the puck, which went to Capitals defenseman Dennis Wideman. He slid the puck over to wide-open Green, who slammed into the glass after releasing his shot from the right circle.

“I didn’t see the puck,” Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist said. “I was pretty much just guessing where it was going.”

It allowed the No. 7-seeded Capitals to make a much-needed recovery from what could have been a demoralizing defeat: The Rangers won Game 3 in triple overtime.

“If we lost this one, we’d be down 3-1, going back there (to New York),” Hunter said. “So the guys knew what was at stake and they came out with a big first (period), a big push. We generated a lot of offense.”

Well, relatively speaking.

The Rangers host Game 5 on Monday, with Game 6 at Washington on Wednesday.

Artem Anisimov had a goal and an assist for the Rangers. New York’s other goal came from Marian Gaborik, who scored the Game 3 winner after nearly 115 minutes. The teams had two days off to recuperate from that marathon, which began and finished after midnight. The Rangers’ 2-1 victory in that game might have given them control of the series.

But anyone counting out the Capitals must have forgotten that they haven’t lost two games in a row since March 22-23. Or that they also trailed 2-1 in the first round before eliminating the reigning NHL champion Boston Bruins in seven games. Then there’s this: The Capitals are 3-0 after OT losses this postseason.

They’re also growing accustomed to playing tight ones: 10 of their 11 playoff games have been decided by one goal, and only once has Washington scored as many as four. It’s a long way from when they were winning playoff games by 4-0 or 5-3 — and, incidentally, never making it beyond the second round.

“We’re a grinding team now. Our identity has kind of flipped. We try not to give up much defensively, keep pucks out of the middle and along the boards, and we’ve been successful with that,” forward Brooks Laich said. “Talking to friends and family, they’re sitting at home, biting their nails and pulling their hair out. They’re just dying for a 4-0 or 5-0 win. But I keep telling them those days are gone a little bit.”

Indeed, the Capitals entered Saturday second in the postseason in blocked shots, behind only the Rangers, and the hosts compiled a 26-7 edge in that stat Saturday.

“The guys are committed,” said Hunter, who replaced fired Bruce Boudreau in November.

The beneficiary was Capitals goalie Braden Holtby, who needed to make only 18 saves and didn’t need to turn away a shot until nearly 5½ minutes into the game. By then, Washington had taken seven shots.

At the end of the first period, the Capitals had a 14-3 edge in shots. The final tally was 26-20 in Washington’s favor.

The biggest, of course, came off the stick of Green, who missed 50 games this season because of a right ankle injury, then abdominal surgery.

“Before he was injured a lot,” Backstrom noted, “we used to see that all the time.”

NOTES: The Capitals are 6-1 this postseason when scoring first. … Ovechkin’s goal was his 29th in the , moving him one away from Peter Bondra’s team record.

(PhatzRadio / ) — AUGUSTA, Ga. – At age 36, Tigers Woods will be playing in his 18th Masters. Not only is he coming off his first PGA Tour win since the fall of 2009. He’ll be playing on a course he’s been getting to know from every angle since he first played in the Masters as a 19-year-old in 1995.

is not a . Whatever changes may be made in the course layout, it’s the home of the Masters every year.

“This is my 18th year, so I’ve just spent about half my life playing this tournament,” Woods said at a Tuesday news conference.

One of the key things he says he has learned about Augusta: that if he doesn’t put a shot exactly where he wants it to make sure that he at least puts it in a place that will minimize the damage on his scorecard.

“It’s understanding how to play this golf course, where to miss it. I’ve gotten just umpteen amount of advice from guys who’ve played here, way more than I have, and that’s really helped,” Woods said. “Over the years of playing with Raymond (Floyd) and Freddie (Couples) and Ollie () and Nick Price, you name it … just understanding how to play this golf course.

“Granted, it’s changed over the years, but you still miss in the same spots. And understanding how to do that has really helped me over the years, and I think that’s one of the reasons why you see so many guys here, the older players, are in contention a lot because they just know how to play it.”

Wood has struggled with his game in recent years amid injuries and personal scandal. Two weekends ago, he ended his 30-month PGA Tour victory drought by winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational by five strokes at Bay Hill in Orlando.

“To go out there (on Sunday) with the lead and increase the lead was a good feeling. And the way I hit the golf ball and putted all day, I felt like I went out there and earned the win,” he said. “It wasn’t given to me. I had to go out there and shoot a really good number under really tough conditions. And that felt really good to do.”

He’d been coming close on occasion, but he hadn’t been winning.

“I think it was a process. I’ve been putting together two goods rounds and eventually three and now four,” he said. “Just had to keep sticking with it and keep getting more experience, working with Sean (swing coach Sean Foley.)

Now he’s looking to win his fifth Masters and his first since 2005. Though he has 14 major titles, he hasn’t won a major since the U.S. Open in 2008.

“I certainly am excited about playing and really looking forward to getting out there and playing because I feel like I’m driving the ball much better than I have,” said Woods. “And my irons are improving. So everything’s headed in the right direction at the right time.”

No par-3: England’s Luke Donald won’t play Wednesday in the Par 3 Contest the day before the start of the Masters. He says it has nothing to do with the supposed par-3 jinx.

No player ever has won the Par 3 Contest and the Masters in the same year. Last year Donald won the Par 3 and tied for fourth in the Masters.

He says his decision is all about the putting stroke, not the jinx.

“No, just the fact that my focus is on winning the other one, not the Par 3, this year,” Donald said. “I probably I will play it when my kids get a little bit older because I think it’s a great experience to take out my daughters to come carry a few clubs around with me. That would be fun. But playing on greens that are not quite the same the afternoon before the first round doesn’t seem the best preparation for me.”

Not a two-horse race:Tiger Woods and are commanding the most attention going into the Masters. England’s Lee Westwood notes there are other horses in the race.

“You know, Rory has never won here. Tiger has not won here since 2005,” Westwood said at a Tuesday press conference.

“So I think everybody in this room would have to be naïve to think it was a two-horse race, wouldn’t they? There’s more. I think Phil (Mickelson) might have a little bit of something to say about that. Luke (Donald) might. I might.”

What does Mickelson think about the notion that this week is all about Tiger vs. Rory?

“I’m cool with it,” he said. “I don’t have a problem with it. I am where I am, and I’m fine with it.”

Said Westwood: “Can I use the ‘It is what it is?’ “
