(PhatzRadio / AP) — SAN JOSE, Calif. – UFC Henderson retained his belt, albeit in razor-thin fashion, and capped off his win with a marriage proposal.

Henderson earned a split-decision win over former champ in the of Saturday’s UFC on FOX 7 event at .

It was Melendez who controlled the fight in the early going, outworking Henderson on the feet and adding in to score points. But as the fight wore on, Henderson seemed to pick up the intensity as Melendez’s output slowed.

Henderson (19-2) used powerful low kicks to slow and wobble Melendez (21-3), and he remained upright while shucking off takedown attempts and landing counterpunches as they flurried.

While the San Jose crowd was firmly behind their hometown fighter, two of three judges disagreed, rewarding Henderson for his late work, and Henderson retained his belt with a split-decision win.

After the , Henderson used his post-fight speech to propose to his .

“I knew it was close,” Henderson said of the fight. “I thought perhaps I had lost the first round. I thought I won the next four, but I knew it was close. I didn’t think it was going to be a split.”

At the evening’s post-event press conference, UFC president Dana White revealed the winner of a May fight between former title (11-1-1) and Cole Harbor, N.S., native T.J. Grant (20-5) will earn the next crack at Henderson’s belt. The pair meets at UFC 160, which takes place May 25 in Las Vegas.

In the night’s co-feature, former heavyweight grand prix winner (12-0) enjoyed a successful UFC debut with a unanimous-decision win over former UFC heavyweight Frank Mir (16-7).

After training for the first time with New Mexico’s famed Team Jackson-Winkeljohn, Mir looked to be in prime physical condition, and he opened the bout with several flashy kicks. But Cormier, a two-time member of the U.S. Olympic wrestling team, used superior grappling to control the pace and positioning of the contest from start to finish.

While the bout took place largely in the clinch and failed to provide much action, Cormier proved he’s capable of competing in the UFC’s heavyweight division by shutting out a former champion and taking the bout with three 30-27 marks.

“I’m not happy with my performance,” Cormier admitted after the fight. “I was nervous, and I can’t explain why. It must’ve been this big-fight feel. I didn’t fight how I wanted.”

In lightweight action, Josh Thomson (20-5) returned to the for the first time since 2004 with an emphatic second-round TKO of the always-durable Nate Diaz (16-9).

Thomson used rapid movement and a steady stream of low kicks to frustrate Diaz throughout the contest, but it was a flush high kick that earned him the win. The blow rocked Diaz, and Thomson pounced with a brutal barrage of punches that saw Diaz’s corner actually throw in the towel just as referee Mike Beltran was moving in to make a stop at the 3:44 mark of the second round.

“There’s nothing like fighting in San Jose,” Thomson said. “I was fighting in UFC before it was cool. I started my career here and I’m so happy that I get to finish it here.”

The night started with a thrilling welterweight matchup featuring a back-and-forth first round that may end up being one of the best five-minute periods of the year. Matt Brown (17-11) outlasted an early assault from Canadian prospect Jordan Mein (27-9) and rebounded for a thrilling second-round TKO over the Lethbridge, Alta., native.

“Every day I wake up and work as hard as I can,” Brown said after the win. “Some days you’re on and some days you’re off. I definitely woke up today.”

Brown and Mein were each awarded US$50,000 bonus cheques for putting on the evening’s “Fight of the Night.”

UFC on FOX 7 drew a reported 13,506 fans for a $1.333 million live gate, according to White.

With a win, welterweight will likely be taken back into UFC
Daniel Cormier (10-0, 7-0) is the one near-certainty to be in the UFC after Saturday
Cormier says he wants to fight at UFC on Fox in April

(PhatzRadio / ) —- OKLAHOMA CITY — The sun will set on Strikeforce as a promotion in the heart of cowboy country.

The longtime to the will shut down after Saturday’s Strikeforce: Marquardt vs. Saffiedine event at Chesapeake (Showtime, 10 p.m. ET/PT).

Though that wasn’t made official until December, the writing had been on the wall for months following a pair of canceled events and rumors about its future.

But the four fighters headlining the promotion’s swan song aren’t looking at their fates as glass half-empty. Each has motivation to win in order to seal the deal with a future in the UFC.

Welterweight Nate Marquardt (32-10-2 MMA, 1-0 SF) headlines against Tarec Saffiedine (13-3, 5-1). With a win, Marquardt likely will be back in the promotion that cut him loose 18 months ago. But he’s trying to keep that out of the equation.

“All I’ve got to do is go in there and knock this guy out, and everything else will take care of itself,” Marquardt says.

Most of the fighters on Saturday’s card have been given no guarantees they’ll be folded into the UFC. However, victories would seem to make their paths much smoother, and that’s what Saffiedine has in mind.

“I’m just focused on winning the fight,” he says. “That’s what I train for. That’s what I’m here for. I want that belt, I want to win, and I want to put on a last exciting fight for Strikeforce.”

Daniel Cormier (10-0, 7-0) is the one near-certainty to be in the UFC after Saturday.

While the heavyweight refuses to look past heavy underdog Dion Staring (28-7, 0-0), he has a clear idea about what he’d like to do once he migrates to UFC. He wants to fight original opponent Frank Mir at UFC on FOX 7 on April 20 in his home training ground of San Jose, Calif.

“Frank said he’d like to fight me, and I’m saying, ‘OK, let’s do it in San Jose on FOX,’

” Cormier says.

Not much is expected for Staring, given that Cormier opened as a 20-1 favorite. Few U.S. fans have heard of the Dutchman, who’s a longtime training partner of UFC .

He plans on changing that.

“I’m going to fight him, I’m going to beat him, and then I’m going to see where I’m going to,” Staring says.

And that seems to be the theme — uncertainty, yes. But win and make the UFC brass’ decisions about the remaining Strikeforce fighters’ futures a little easier.

The main card follows preliminaries on Showtime Extreme starting at 8 p.m. ET/PT

Le calls knockout, which came at the 2:17 mark, ‘lucky,’ and is at loss for words
In co-, Silva comes back to defeat Nedkov, gets back in win column after long absence

(PhatzRadio / ) — Not a lot was on the line in Saturday’s in Macau, but don’t tell that to Cung Le.

The former Strikeforce middleweight notched arguably the biggest win of his career with a one-punch knockout of ex- champ .

Le’s massive first-round knockout came at the 2:17 mark in the main event of the ’s first card in China, on FUEL TV 6, which took place at CotaiArena in Venetian Macau Resort Hotel.

The Vietnamese-born Le,a part- movie star, attributed the knockout to luck, though he executed it perfectly.

“That’s the biggest fight of my life,” Le (9-2 MMA, 2-1 UFC) said after the event. “I’m just grateful. I don’t know what to say. Just a lucky punch.”

Franklin (29-7, 14-6), who was a UFC 185-pound champ until longtime divisional kingpin Anderson Silva beat him in 2007, was a 4-to-1 favorite against the 40-year-old Le.

But Le took his time against the American. He tried to time his offense against Franklin’s and leg kicks. When Franklin threw a left outside , Le reared back and threw a right hand that was right on the button, which put Franklin flat on the canvas.

“He kept on throwing that punch at me, and I wasn’t able to time my kick,” Le said.” He was loading up, and he was looking for me to kick and catch me with the punches. So I came in, I waited for him to punch. I came with the , and I caught him.”

After a loss in his UFC debut nearly a year ago to , Le now has back-to-back octagon wins. The loss for Franklin keeps him from his first since 2008. He was looking for a second after a unanimous-decision win over in June.

Le earned the night’s$40,000 “Knockout of the Night” bonus for his effort.

In the co-main event, Thiago Silva mounted a comeback against Stanislav Nedkov to get back in the win column for the first time in more than three years.

Nedkov’s clinch game stifled much of Silva’s offensive potential through two rounds. But in the third, Silva took advantage of a tiring Nedkov to land a high kick and then secure a . On the ground, Silva made quick work of the Bulgarian. He transitioned from full mount to secure an arm-triangle choke, and Nedkov tapped at the 1:45 mark of the final round.

UFC officials rewarded Silva with a $40,000 “Submission of the Night” bonus.

The nine-fight card featured seven straight decisions before Silva’s submission win and Le’s knockout. Of those seven 15-minute fights, Takanori Gomi’s split-decision win over “The Ultimate Fighter 5″ winner Mac Danzig was named “Fight of the Night.”

Full UFC on FUEL TV 6results included:

UFC/ MMA Strikeforce Results: Daniel Cormier Smashes Josh Barnett

f07d6456b4afa4769701681b00caea9e UFC/ MMA Strikeforce Results: Daniel Cormier Smashes Josh Barnett

(PhatzRadio / ) — May 20, 2012 – The Heavyweight winner wasn’t even in the field when the tournament began.

, considered a prospect in need of more seasoning when the tourney began, announced himself as a rising power on the world scene, smashing through Josh Barnett in cruising to a five-round decision win. Two judges scored it 50-45 while the third scored it 49-46.

By the end of the one-sided fight, Barnett’s face was covered in his own blood, and his right eye was black and blue.

“I just want to focus on the fact I just beat Josh Barnett,” an emotional Cormier said afterward. “One year ago, that’s not something I thought I could do.”

Cormier got out of the blocks quickly, confidently unleashing his striking while targeting multiple spots on Barnett. He easily out-struck Barnett, with the ’s only of the opening frame coming with a straight right in the closing seconds.

Unfortunately for Barnett, he hurt his in the same round, saying he broke it while landing a .

“It was killing me but there was no way I was going to stop fighting,” said Barnett, who fell to 31-6 after having his eight-fight snapped. “I was going make him earn this.”

He did. Cormier rarely found himself in trouble, with the only moment of doubt coming in the fourth, when he had to escape a heel hook attempt. Aside from that it was practically all Cormier, who had a pair of highlight reel slams to go with his striking diversity and power.

In both the second and third rounds, Cormier had Barnett in after battering him with . Barnett survived each round, but could do little else.

Cormier is now a perfect 10-0 in his young career. He will have to fight one more time in before moving over to the . Providing he wins that bout in the interim, he should become an instant .

Barnett faces a murkier future, but given his game performance and a thawed relationship with UFC president Dana White, he’s likely to be brought over as well.

Before Saturday night, the longtime Barnett had only lost bouts to a prime Pedro Rizzo, a prime Mirko Cro Cop, and a near-prime . Add Cormier to that list now, as he became the surprise champ.

UFC / MMA Recap: Dos Santos – Don’t let Overeem fight if tests sustained

9ef61d0e26f4e36780cad22867a67be1 UFC / MMA Recap: Dos Santos – Don’t let Overeem fight if tests sustained

(PhatzRadio / ) Junior Dos Santos believes allowing to compete next month would set a bad example if his latest test results hold up.

“If the fight happens, I will fight with pleasure,” Dos Santos told Globo.com, a Brazilian news site. “But I can say that if it is proven, the use of illegal substances is a disrespect to the sport and something unfair to me.”

Overeem, a former , became the ’s No. 1 contender at heavyweight in December. scheduled him for a May 26 bout with Dos Santos, but that might not happen because an out-of-competition test recently found Overeem with a testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio far above the level permitted by Nevada rules.

If the licenses Overeem and the original bout takes place as scheduled, Dos Santos would be willing to fight him. But the UFC titleholder wondered how Overeem won titles in Japan, where promoters do not use rigorous testing regimes, as well as a belt that he did not defend for years while competing overseas.

“I find it very curious he won three belts without ever having been caught doping right away and ends up being caught in the UFC,” Dos Santos said.

Overeem used to fight as a light heavyweight. He has been publicly accused by at least one previous opponent, , of using performance enhancers to add more than 60 pounds, largely muscle, from 2007 to 2011.

The use of performance-enhancing drugs hurts the sport’s image, Dos Santos said.

“I’ve never used these devices to gain strength,” said Dos Santos, who called for Olympic-level tests that rely on rather than urine. “Being a making false use of a lot of drugs, that’s not being champion. … I can clearly say that I am the champion without ever having the use of any illegal artifice in order to get there.”

, M-1 vet Davis charged with insurance fraud

A Bellator Fighting Championships accused of competing while trying to collect workers’ compensation could spend years in jail, prosecutors said this week.

The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office charged Raphael “The Noodle” Davis with four felony counts of insurance fraud. Davis was arrested Tuesday morning and immediately held on $30,000 bail, the district attorney’s office said.

Davis was released from jail Wednesday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Fraud investigators found that Davis, a firefighter, made false claims for workers’ compensation, the district attorney’s office said, adding that the filings took place between December 2, 2008 and May 20, 2011.

He fought seven times in mixed martial arts during that period, going 6-1 as a light heavyweight. He won twice for Bellator and twice for M-1 Global.

If convicted, Davis faces up to five years in county jail, prosecutors said.

UFC / MMA: Tara LaRosa expects to shed bad habits for Warren bout

(PhatzRadio / ) — Female over the past few months reached its highest level of attention in years, yet the sport’s most accomplished was stuck in a holding pattern until last week.

“We went through probably seven or eight that I know of just for this fight,” says , No. 1 at 125 pounds in the Unified Women’s MMA Rankings. “Everybody at 125 or who has fought at 125 or is interested in 125 is busy right now and has either got a fight coming up or they’re under contract exclusively to someone else or they’re just not prepared to take it because of personal things going on.”

She recently signed a multifight agreement with Resurrection Fighting Alliance, which on Thursday announced a March 30 bout in Kearney, Neb. featuring LaRosa and unranked Kelly Warren. The difference in experience suggests a between LaRosa (20-2) — a pioneer of women’s fighting with a professional resume going back almost 10 years — and Warren (3-2), who’s been doing it for less than two. LaRosa will take almost anything she can get at this point.

Despite a resume unmatched by any female fighter in North America, LaRosa has had such a getting - at her ideal weight of 125 pounds that she’s been out of action for a year. It’s the second longest of her career, exceeded only by a 14-month caused by the of BodogFight’s operations in .

As recently as two weeks ago, LaRosa thought she’d be facing a far more experienced opponent than Warren. But that plan fell through the weekend of March 3, so while and Miesha Tate were tussling over ’s 135-, a fighter with more wins than both of them combined was still wondering whether she’d have a bout in four weeks.

Some of the ranked talent at 125 pounds already committed to other fights in the near future or remain tied to other organizations. No. 2 Rosi Sexton fights for the British Association of Mixed Martial Arts. No. 3 Cat Zingano has an April 28 fight at the debut event of Invicta Fighting Championships. No. 6 Aisling Daly and No. 7 Jessica Eye will square off April 20 in Bellator Fighting Championships.

LaRosa might have an easier time finding opposition at the bantamweight limit of 135 pounds, the weight at which she competed for much of her career. Although she has beaten three fighters in the top 10 at bantamweight, LaRosa was undersized for the division, given that she’s small enough to qualify at 121 pounds in grappling tournaments.

Meanwhile, LaRosa can’t figure out why it’s been so hard to find an available foe at 125.

“It just seems to be for different reasons each time,” LaRosa says. “I don’t think anybody’s really afraid to fight me. I don’t think I’m someone that’s scary. I don’t knock people out. I don’t cut people. I don’t break limbs.”

That last statement has a slightly disingenuous tinge. Eight women in mixed martial arts would have suffered broken bones or badly damaged joints had they not submitted from submission holds applied by LaRosa, winner of several medals at international tournaments for grappling.

On paper, she should be able to do outgrapple her next opponent. Warren — a member of MMA’s hottest camp these days, Team Jackson-Winkeljohn in Albuquerque, N.M. — will go into the March 30 fight barely a month after suffering her second loss in a row.

On other other hand, staying busy might be preferable to LaRosa’s lengthy absence. While other women — including several that she has beaten — found fights in 2011, she spent much of the year bartending and working in construction to pay the bills. Until this month, LaRosa hadn’t trained MMA since last summer, she says.

LaRosa remains affiliated with the Philadelphia Fight Factory team that includes Bellator bantamweight titleholder Zack Makovsky. Though LaRosa speaks highly of the Fight Factory, she returned to training this month by going to highly respected coach Matt Hume’s AMC Pankration gym in Kirkland, Wash. for a change of pace.

“My timing, it’s starting to come back, but I’m really rusty,” LaRosa says. “My details are off. … What’s nice is, I’m adding some new things in. They say that sometimes when you take a lot of time off, sometimes your habits change and some of your bad habits can fall away, which is kind of nice.”

She believes she has to afford herself of opportunities while she’s still near her physical prime. At age 34, LaRosa doesn’t know how she has left as a top fighter.

“When I first started, a question that I was asked a lot was, ‘Where do you see yourself in five or 10 years?’ ” she says. “I always said, ‘Fighting. I’ll always be part of the sport in some way or whatever.’ Now where do I see myself in another five or 10 years? I have no idea.”

The rise of younger fighters has LaRosa looking over her shoulder.

“It’s going to be an up-and-comer that takes me out,” she says. “Kelly’s a tough chick, from what I understand. We’ll just have to see how it goes.”
