Analysis: Trade for Tebow shakes up Jets’ QB lineup

() – Trading for and bringing ‘Tebowmania’ to New York quickened the pulse of fans in the Big Apple, which has already had a Linsane love affair this winter with the heartwarming rise of unsung Jeremy Lin with the NBA’s Knicks.

But on the gridiron, Tebow’s potential impact was not as clear and raised the question of how adding a high-profile quarterback might affect the delicate psyche of starting signal caller .

Sanchez, who in the past has bristled at sharing practice snaps with former backup and feuded with dissatisfied wide receiver Santonio Holmes, was recently given a three-year with $20.5 million in guarantees.

That move seemed to be the Jets’ way of reaffirming their faith in the 25-year-old quarterback who helped them reach the in each of his first two but struggled through a mediocre 2011 campaign that ended with three losses and an 8-8 record.

The Jets also recently signed former Michigan State quarterback Drew Stanton to back up Sanchez, but New York was willing to shake things up.

Denver’s signing of free agent Manning on Tuesday made Tebow available and the Jets landed the deeply religious left-hander, who created a craze last season in helping the Broncos bull their way into the playoffs.

The quarterbacks could co-exist in one scenario that would see Tebow become the central figure in a revived Wildcat package devised by new Tony Sparano, who introduced the Dolphins’ successful gadget formation to the NFL when he was head coach at Miami.

In 2009 and 2010, New York used a Wildcat spearheaded by former Jet to positive effect, and that could be expanded for Tebow as a change-of-pace during drives, in the red-zone, or for short yardage.

Jets coach , a wizard on the defensive side of the game, has often said he preferred to play a conservative, Ground and Pound style of attack that the team featured in Sanchez’s first two seasons.

The muscular, hard-running Tebow rushed for 660 yards and six touchdowns for Denver and might provide a jolt of energy for the Jets, even possibly lining up in the same backfield with Sanchez.

However, should Sanchez falter the chants of “Tebow, Tebow, Tebow” would be sure to ring out at MetLife Stadium and Sanchez could be looking over his shoulder worried about his job.

Off-field benefits are more tangible.

The Jets still have expensive personal seat licenses (PSLs) to sell for season ticket holders, and the widespread popularity of Tebow would be sure to generate a surge in merchandising sales.

And with their stadium-mates the New York Giants coming off a Super Bowl triumph over the New England Patriots, adding a personality like Tebow grabs headlines and back-page splashes in the tabloids and brings a reinvigorated buzz to the team.

NFL Plaxico: Nothing ‘would make me happier’ than being an Eagle

(PhatzRadio / ) — Given his , it sounds like WR hopes to wear a different shade of green in 2012.

During an interview with 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia, Burress was asked about the possibility of signing with the Eagles once free agency starts.

“Hey man, nothing else would make me happier,” he said, praising an offense that ranked fourth in the NFL in 2011 (399.1 ypg) and already boasts , RB and WRs and (assuming Jackson is retained).

Burress said he’d offer a “unique dynamic to what’s already in place” before noting: “I always say you can neutralize speed, but you can’t neutralize size. I mean, you can back off a guy who runs a 4.2 or 4.3 and keep him in front of you. But when you get down inside the 20 (yard line), 15, inside the , you’re talking about a guy like me out there on the edge, I mean there’s only so many things you can do.”

After serving nearly two years in prison on a handgun charge, Burress was back in the NFL last season for the first time since 2008.

Playing on a one-year deal with the , the 6-5, 232- finished with 45 catches for 612 yards and eight TDs. He beat Eagles CB for a spectacular 9-yard TD grab in the ’ 45-19 loss at Philadelphia in Week 15.

Vick reached out to Burress while he was incarcerated, and the of Southeastern Virginia have become close friends. Those ties nearly led Burress to sign with Philadelphia last year.

“For us to get together and be able to play together on a professional football team — especially coming from where we come from, and obviously going through the things we’ve gone through — I just think it would be a special deal,” said Burress. “I really think he can bring a championship to Philadelphia, and I would love to be a part of that.”

Burress, 34, said he spent much of 2011 just getting his legs back under him.

“This next year, I think I’ll be a lot stronger and getting back to doing the things I know I can do, and getting back to a place where I can let myself show,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to the Jets for giving him an NFL lifeline and didn’t rule out re-signing with them.

“(HC) Rex (Ryan) and (GM) Mike Tannenbaum and (owner) Woody Johnson, I have nothing but the utmost respect for them. They brought me into a situation not knowing what they would get out of me and just really pushed me on an individual level to get back to where I know I can be,” said Burress.

“But I’m ready to go, man (for 2012 season). This second year, I’m going to start training here in a week or so. Being a free agent is an exciting time for me, being in a place I want to be, and Philadelphia is obviously one of those places.”

() – The New York Giants took advantage of some stumbling and bumbling by the St Louis Rams to post a 28-16 victory in the on Monday.

Eli Manning made Greg Salas pay for a fumbled punt return in the first quarter, the Giants quarterback throwing a three-yard to Hakeem Nicks after Rams cornerback Bradley Fletcher had been called for pass interference on Nicks two plays earlier.

The Giants stretched their lead to 14-6 in the second quarter following a blunder in the by the Rams.

Quarterback Sam Bradford fired a quick pass through the hands of Carnell ‘Cadillac’ Williams that was deemed a fumbled lateral since Williams was a step behind Bradford.

Giants linebacker Michael Boley scooped up the ball and ran down the sideline for a 65-.

“When they gave us a little opening, we seemed to jump in there and get points and and not settle for ,” Manning told reporters.

The Rams, meanwhile, twice drove inside the Giants’ 10-yard line but failed to convert the opportunities to touchdowns as the New York defense stiffened and held them to field goals.

“Just too many mistakes in the ,” Bradford said. “When you get down there you have to come away with touchdowns.”

Manning got off to a sluggish start and threw an on their opening drive while missing on nine of his first 11 passes.

CIRCUS CATCH

However, he started clicking with his offense toward the end of the first half and led the Giants to a more conventional touchdown at the end of the first half.

The former connected on six-for-six on an eight-play, 86-yard drive that culminated in a juggling, 22-yard catch by Domenik Hixon in the .

The highlight reel grab made it 21-6 with 21 seconds left before half-time, and virtually made the game safe for the Giants.

“Hixon made a great catch in the end zone, a big momentum changer right there,” said Manning.

Manning completed 18-of-29 passes for 200 yards, including two touchdowns and one interception.

Bradford was 22-for-46 passing for 331 yards, including a 19-yard touchdown to Danario Alexander in the third quarter.

Defensive captain Justin Tuck, who missed New York’s opening loss to the Redskins due to a neck injury, said the Giants had room to improve but were relieved to win.

“The win tonight was important,” said Tuck, who had a lively season debut with 1 sacks, four solo tackles and three hits on the quarterback.

“There’s no such thing as an ugly win. With all the parity in this league they are hard to come by. Obviously there’s some things we need to correct and get better at, but we’re still proud how we played tonight.”

Both squads were hampered by injuries, with the Rams missing their leading rusher Steven Jackson and wide receiver Danny Amendola among others.

The Giants were missing pass-rushing defensive end Osi Umenyiora and tight end Travis Beckum, while wide receivers Hixon (calf) and Mario Manningham (concussion) were sent to the sidelines during the game.

“We just have to keep playing, keep fighting,” Manning said about his depleted receiving corps. “We got off to a slow start. I had some throws that I missed.

“We definitely are not playing as well as we need to, but at key moments when we needed some touchdowns, I thought we made some big plays.”

NFL: Sanchez looks sharp, but Texans trump Jets in preseason opener

HOUSTON (AP) — Chris Ogbonnaya made the most of his opportunity in Houston’s , with virtually every other Texans running back hobbled by injuries.

Ogbonnaya caught a from and ran for the winning score in the fourth quarter of the Texans’ 20-16 win over the on Monday night.

“This time of the year is a grind,” Ogbonnaya said, “and you just have to be ready for the opportunity when it comes.”

The regular starters for both sides only played the first quarter.

Mark Sanchez looked sharp, completing 6 of 7 passes, two to . Sanchez’s usual backup, Mark Brunell, did not play because of a finger injury, leaving the rest of the game to seventh-round draft pick Greg McElroy, the former Alabama star.

The ’ first-string offense produced four first downs and 73 yards, but only three points.

“We would’ve liked to score a touchdown on that first drive, but we didn’t,” Sanchez said. “I was proud of the first group moving the ball the way we did. Now, we just need to finish in the .”

, meanwhile, looked shaky for the Texans. He went 2 for 5 for 20 yards and was sacked once before Leinart replaced him.

Ogbonnaya accounted for 104 total yards — 37 on the ground and 67 receiving. He was just about the last running back standing for Houston after Derrick Ward left in the first half with a head injury. Arian Foster, the 2010 rushing champ, and backups Steve Slaton and Ben Tate were sidelined with hamstring injuries.

“Hats off to Ogbonnaya, the young man’s had a great camp for two weeks,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. “Really, he was all we had. He played the whole game. He’s been a real warrior for us.”

Houston trailed 16-13 in the final quarter when Derrick Townsel returned a punt to the New York 37. Two plays later, rookie T.J. Yates completed a 28-yard pass to rookie Lestar Jean to the 1. Ogbonnaya dived into the end zone on the first play following the 2-minute warning.

The Jets had a chance to win it in the final minute, but undrafted free agent Michael Campbell dropped a 32-yard pass from McElroy in the end zone.

Houston’s defense, learning a 3-4 scheme under new coordinator Wade Phillips, produced seven . But McElroy, a seventh-round draft pick, still found gaps and completed 23 of 39 passes for 208 yards and a touchdown.

Phillips has only had a few weeks to teach his players the new scheme because of the lockout, and Texans coach Gary Kubiak saw obvious progress.

“In general, you could see they’ve grasped the nature of the defense,” Kubiak said. “We stayed away from giving up big plays.”

, who turned down offers from other teams to return to Houston and back up Schaub, also looked solid, except for an interception that led to the Jets’ lone touchdown. Leinart went 8 for 14 for 78 yards in about two quarters of action.

Sanchez completed his first four throws, and the Jets drove inside the Houston 15. Linebacker Xavier Adibi sacked Sanchez on third down, forcing New York to settle for Nick Folk’s 33-yard field goal. Folk, who signed a one-year deal after going 30 of 39 on field-goal attempts last season, is competing with veteran Nick Novak for the job.

Leinart replaced Schaub at the start of the second quarter, and immediately completed a pass to James Casey for a 9-. On third down, Leinart rolled left and threw a short pass to Ogbonnaya, who picked up 29 yards to the Jets’ 31.

The drive stalled, and Neil Rackers’ 49-yard field goal tied it with 12:13 left in the first half.

McElroy replaced Sanchez on New York’s first drive of the second quarter.

Linebacker Jesse Nading sacked McElroy, forced a fumble and defensive end Tim Jamison recovered at the Jets’ 14. Ogbonnaya converted a fourth-and-1, and Jets’ coach stomped up the sideline and angrily called a timeout and ripped off his headset before Houston could snap it again.

“Too many guys out there, and we had to burn a timeout,” Ryan said.

Leinart then rolled left again and flicked an easy pass to Ogbonnaya for a touchdown.

Ogbonnaya had a 15-yard run, and gained 16 more yards on a screen pass on Houston’s next possession. Rackers capped the drive with a 47-yard field goal with 57 seconds left before the break to put the Texans ahead 13-3.

Novak kicked a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter, and Leinart’s first pass of the second half was tipped at the line by Kendrick Ellis and intercepted by Josh Mauga. Bilal Powell gained 19 yards on a short pass, and McElroy found Patrick Turner for the tying touchdown.

The Jets got the ball back near midfield with about 10 minutes left. Powell, a fourth-round pick out of Louisville, rushed for 21 yards on the drive and Folk kicked a 40-yard field goal with 6:12 remaining to give New York a 16-13 lead.

NOTES: Jets’ guards Rob Turner (lower leg) and Chris Stewart (shoulder) left in the first half. Texans’ guards Antoine Caldwell and Kasey Studdard both went out with ankle injuries. … Houston All-Pro receiver Andre Johnson (dislocated finger) and linebacker Brian Cushing (knee) also sat out.

Thousands face volcanic ash cloud flight cancellations

6b27ee43d041587f0a08a1c4915585f3 Thousands face volcanic ash cloud flight cancellations

(Phatforums Blog/ BBC News) – Thousands of passengers face UK flight cancellations because of drifting ash from an Icelandic volcanic eruption.

Airports likely to be affected from 1300 to 1900 BST include Londonderry, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Prestwick, Durham Tees Valley, Newcastle and Carlisle, air traffic services company Nats said.

European said 252 flights had been cancelled so far.

However Ryanair said it had made a test flight over Scotland and challenged a ruling some flights should be grounded.

The carrier said its one-hour flight at 41,000ft showed there was “no visible volcanic ash cloud or evidence of ash on the airframe, wings or engines”.

It claimed the “” over Scottish airspace where ash has been classified “high-density” was invented by the Met Office and the (CAA).

Chief executive Michael O’Leary said: “We’ve got written confirmation from the engine and our airframe manufacturers that we’re safe to fly even within these red zones.

“And yet yesterday, the combination of bureaucratic incompetence between the Met office, with these nonsensical charts, and the CAA closed the skies over Glasgow.”

But a CAA spokesperson said: “The CAA can confirm that at no time did a Ryanair flight enter the notified area of high contamination ash over Scotland this morning.”

The UK’s emergency response committee, Cobra, is meeting at 1530 BST to discuss the knock-on effects of the ash cloud.

Transport Secretary Philip Hammond, who will lead the talks, said although there would be widespread disruption for Scottish airports, it was unlikely to last long.

He told the BBC he expected Edinburgh and Glasgow airports to be clear by afternoon on Tuesday, and northern Scottish airports by Wednesday morning.
