COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Alex Tanguay scored on a one-timer 1:07 into overtime to lead Calgary to victory in a battle of Western Conference cellar-dwellers.

Shortly after Columbus threatened on two shots by Fedor Tyutin, the Flames had an odd-man rush and Jarome Iginla saucered a cross-ice setup to Tanguay, who unloaded from the right dot.

Roman Cervenka, Mikael Backlund and Lee Stempniak also scored for the Flames, who won their second in a row. Jiri Hudler and T.J. Brodie each had two assists.

Read notched his first career hat trick last month against the Panthers and his second-period goal against Jose Theodore was his sixth goal against them in six career games. He has 28 career goals.

Read was stopped by Theodore in the shootout. Claude Giroux also came up short in the second round.

SABRES 5, CANADIENS 4, SO

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Thomas Vanek scored twice in regulation, including the tying tally with 2 seconds left, and added a shootout goal to rally Buffalo past Montreal.

Jason Pominville also scored in the shootout and Ryan Miller clinched the victory by making a left pad save to stop Brian Gionta on Montreal’s final opportunity.

Buffalo rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the third period to snap a three-game skid and win for the second time in its past nine games. Vanek, the NHL’s leading scorer with 10 goals and 21 points, keyed the comeback by scoring both third-period goals, his second coming during a scramble in front at 19:58.

HURRICANES 3, SENATORS 2, OT

OTTAWA (AP) — Cam Ward made 45 saves and Jay Harrison scored 2:19 into overtime to rally Carolina to victory.

Harrison’s winner came off a scramble in front as he banged a loose puck past Senators goalie Craig Anderson.

Chad LaRose and Alexander Semin scored in regulation for the Hurricanes, who have won five of their last seven.

Erik Karlsson and Daniel Alfredsson replied for the Senators, while Anderson stopped 23 shots in taking the loss.

PREDATORS 3, KINGS 0

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Pekka Rinne made 32 saves for his first shutout of the season and Colin Wilson scored two goals to lead Nashville to its fourth straight win.

The defending Stanley Cup champion Kings have dropped three of their past four.

Gabriel Bourque opened the scoring 2:54 into the opening period and Wilson added his goals in the second period.

From the left corner, David Legwand sent a backhand pass to Bourque in the high slot, and he beat Los Angeles goaltender Jonathan Quick with a one-timer low to the glove side.

CANUCKS 4, WILD 1

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Cory Schneider made 22 saves and Mason Raymond had a power-play goal and an assist in the second period to lead Vancouver past sputtering Minnesota for its fourth straight win.

Niklas Backstrom gave up two scores in each of the first two periods for the Wild, and Josh Harding was in the net for the final frame. Daniel Sedin, Chris Higgins and Jannik Hansen also had goals for the Canucks, whose shutout was spoiled by Tom Gilbert’s power-play slap shot with 12:35 left.

MAPLE LEAFS 3, JETS 2

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Phil Kessel scored his first goal of the season late in the third period to lift Toronto to victory.

Tyler Bozak scored short-handed and Matt Frattin added a goal for the Leafs, who won their second straight of a three-game road trip.

Kessel’s goal ended a frustrating drought for the top-line winger who had 37 goals last season.

Zach Redmond and Andrew Ladd scored for the Jets, who have lost four of their past five games.

Shortened NHL season: Dates to remember

(PhatzRadio / CBC ) — There are fewer total games on the NHL schedule this season, but there remains plenty of intriguing dates featuring top stars, new faces, and players returning to familiar places.

Jan. 19: The season begins, with the 60th season of featuring a tripleheader involving five Canadian teams: Ottawa visits Winnipeg (3 p.m. ET), Toronto travels to Montreal (7 p.m. ET) and Vancouver hosts Anaheim (10 p.m. ET)

Elsewhere around the league, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia renew hostilities after their crazy first-round series last spring.

The host Chicago, unveiling their Stanley Cup banner before the .

Detroit will visit St. Louis in a division encounter, but the real noteworthy aspect is that it will be the franchise’s first regular-season game in two decades without as part of their plans. As an aside, with Lidstrom living in Sweden, the Wings likely won’t hold a jersey until 2013-14.

Boston would figure to be a under normal circumstances, but will they be a strong team without their goaltending tandem of recent years? The Bruins begin their season against the , and it will be up to and Anton Khudobin to carry the load after quirky veteran Tim Thomas decided he has no interest in playing this season.

Jan. 20: The Alberta teams get in on the action. Calgary hosts San Jose in their first game with Bob Hartley calling the shots on the bench, while rookie Nail Yakupov will join the rest of Edmonton’s young cast in a game in Vancouver.

Marian Hossa is back to full health after suffering a frightening concussion last spring from a hit. Chicago will face Phoenix on this date, but due to a Torres suspension, the pair won’t conceivably be in the same game until a Feb. 7 matchup.

Jan. 21: The Ontario teams enjoy their home openers. Toronto gets a visit from Buffalo, with Ottawa hosting Florida.

Jan. 22: Edmonton’s home opener, against San Jose.

Jan. 26: The first installment this season in the Battle of Alberta, to be played in Calgary, gets a national platform on Night in Canada.

Jan. 27: With a two-year contract signed, may not be making his last visit to his native Montreal as a member of the New Jersey Devils, but with few such encounters left, one to watch regardless.

Feb. 3: The pre-eminent NHL stars since the lockout (the previous one), Sidney Crosby and Alex Ovechkin, face off for the first of two games in five days between Pittsburgh and Washington.

Feb. 9: Scotiabank Hockey Day in Canada returns, with matchups which include Toronto/Montreal, Vancouver/Calgary, Edmonton/Detroit and Winnipeg/Ottawa.

Feb. 16: The Battle of Ontario picks up in 2013, also on Hockey Night, at the Air Canada Centre, where the Leafs host the Senators.

Feb. 24: Superstars Crosby and Steven Stamkos, who shared the Rocket Richard Trophy a few years back, share the same ice as the Lightning visit Pittsburgh.

Feb. 28: skates this season alongside his as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes. Jordan Staal faces his former Penguins teammates on this date, with his first game back in Pittsburgh on the final day of the regular season. The two brothers are set to team up against sibling Marc for the first time on March 18, when Carolina plays the .

March 2: Crosby and the Penguins make their only season trip to Montreal in an HNIC game.

March 9: Zach Parise won’t face his former team, New Jersey, but the other $100-million US dollar man for the Wild gets that opportunity. Ryan Suter and Minnesota skate in Nashville against the Predators.

April 3: The NHL trade deadline. The much-loved hockey media paradigm of “buyers” and “sellers,” insufficient at the best of times, will likely have little relevance this season, where the standings figure to be tightly packed. Perhaps even the Toronto Maple Leafs will participate given that Brian Burke is no longer around (Burke has long lamented the trade deadline as rife with boneheaded moves, often making no more than minor transactions).

On a related transaction note, unlike typical seasons, there will be no deadline by which restricted free agents are required to sign. So while no one expects it will get to that point, the likes of PK Subban (Montreal) and Jamie Benn (Dallas) could in theory not join their clubs until very late in the season.

April 27: The final day of the regular season, with the total number of games ultimately reaching 720 (A traditional NHL season features 1,230). There are 13 games on the schedule on this date, and with a compressed season, you can bet that nearly all of them will have playoff implications. Hockey Night in Canada games are as follows: Montreal at Toronto, Philadelphia at Ottawa, and Vancouver at Edmonton. The final game is a 10:30 p.m. ET tilt between San Jose and Los Angeles.

(PhatzRadio / AP) — The hit Roger Goodell delivered on on Wednesday was the kind he accuses Vilma of encouraging — a season-ending blow.

The suspended the New Orleans Saints for the entire 2012 season and dinged three other players for as much as a half-season for their participation in a .

The severity of the suspensions surprised even players in other sports.

“Wow, that’s tough,” forward Steve Novak said. “Point made, I guess.”

And making a point is the point: In an era when players make so much money that fines can seem as trivial as parking tickets, leagues are getting tough by issuing long-term suspensions, without pay.

“Players can pay the fines, no problem,” ESPN and former coach Herm Edwards said, “but when you start taking them off the field … they have to answer for it in the locker room.”

Suspensions have rocked other sports in recent weeks as well. The NHL suspended Phoenix Coyotes winger for 25 games, one of the longest in NHL history, for a hit deemed high and late. And the NBA suspended Los Angeles Lakers forward Metta World Peace for seven games for a high elbow.

“Game suspensions are far more meaningful than simple monetary fines,” said Peter Finley, an assistant professor of sport and recreation management at Nova Southeastern University. “The players want to be on the field. … In terms of dollars, they brush off a lot of that.”

Torres and World Peace are repeat offenders whose latest suspensions came after taking shots at opponents’ heads. The Saints are accused of running a system where players could get paid for hits knocking opponents out of games, including blows to the head. All this comes as evidence mounts that concussions and repeated sub-concussive blows can lead to terrible health consequences later in life.

Goodell’s backers see Wednesday’s suspensions as a bold statement that player safety is paramount in the NFL. His critics say the suspensions are an unfair reaction to the more than 60 lawsuits filed by former players alleging that the NFL didn’t adequately protect its players, including a suit last month that cited the Saints’ .

“People are going to question Roger: He was too tough. He wasn’t tough enough,” said agent David Falk, most famous for representing Michael Jordan. “It’s a very difficult posture for Roger to take, but I think it’s the correct one.”

Goodell previously suspended Saints coach Sean Payton for a year and former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams indefinitely for their part in the bounty system.

“Listen, if you want to play in the NFL, you better do what a coach says,” former Saints quarterback Bobby Hebert said. “I take the approach that none of the players should have been suspended because of that.

“The reason why Roger is so concerned with player safety is he’s trying to cover the owners’ and the league’s behind. … If they truly cared about player safety, they would have done something about this 20 years ago.”

Sports USA NFL Radio analyst Ross Tucker, a former offensive lineman, questioned the length of the player penalties: “Honestly, they could cut every one of these suspensions in half and it would accomplish the same (thing). Roger always says club executives are going to be held to an even higher standard. It seems to me that the players have been held to the exact same standard.”

New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning backed Goodell: “I think he’s doing the right thing to make sure that this doesn’t happen ever again. … I think he’s been harsh to try to make a statement saying there is no place for this in the game of football.”

ESPN’s Mike Golic, who played defensive tackle in the NFL for nine seasons, said knocking quarterbacks out of games with legal hits is just football. But he also thinks suspensions are the most effective deterrents: “Everybody wants to play. Playing time is key. When you can’t be there for your team, it’s a horrible feeling.”

Increasing consequences

NHL Brendan Shanahan said during the all-star break that short-term suspensions can still be effective.

“I still believe in one- or two-game suspensions,” he said. “I’ve had hearings with players where there’s been no suspension and we’ll get off the phone and say, ‘We’re never going to hear from that guy again.’ Just with a warning. I’ve also given out multi-game suspensions and we get off the phone and say, ‘We’ll see him again.’ ”

Torres is the sort of recidivist Shanahan was talking about. Last season, Torres was suspended four games for elbowing. This season, he was fined the maximum $2,500 for another elbow — and the same day he was fined, he charged Minnesota’s Nate Prosser, which earned him a two-game suspension.

Then, in the playoffs, came Torres’ devastating hit on the Blackhawks’ Marian Hossa, who was carried off on a .

NHL rules specify harsher penalties for repeat offenders. If a player has no suspensions in the previous 18 months, his lost pay is based on the number of days in the season. If there’s a second suspension within 18 months, it’s based on the number of games in the season — 82.

Here’s what that means in practice: When Edmonton Oilers defenseman Andy Sutton was suspended for five games in November for an illegal hit to the head, it cost him about $11,500 a game. When he got an eight-game suspension for charging in December, the cost was nearly $26,000 a game.

Paying and playing

Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison is the poster boy for Goodell’s on-field safety enforcement. Harrison knocked out two Cleveland Browns with concussions in a game in 2010 and was fined $75,000 for one of the hits. Additional questionable hits, and additional fines, followed — including a helmet-to-helmet hit against Browns quarterback Colt McCoy last season that got him a 15-yard penalty and a one-game suspension.

“I was suspended on a hit where there was no way I could have done anything else,” Harrison said. “If you slow it down to one-tenth speed, then it looks bad, like I could have avoided it. In real time, it can’t be.

“A guy goes out and happens to make helmet-to-helmet contact? By the letter of the rule, it’s wrong. But to suspend guys and fine them these crazy amounts of money, I don’t know.”

Harrison said the suspension made him less aggressive at first. “(But) I felt like I was putting myself at risk. If you hesitate on the football field, you can get your knee blown out. You can’t play the game. … When it comes down to it, I don’t want to get hurt and I don’t want to hurt anybody else.”

Harrison did hurt Broncos receiver Eric Decker in a January playoff game when Decker sprained the medial collateral ligament in his left knee on a play over the middle.

“I could’ve hit him high, and I probably would’ve gotten fined or suspended,” Harrison said. “I hit him low, and his knee is injured. If it’s me coming across the middle (as a receiver), I want him to hit me high. Maybe I know with head injuries, in the long run it can be life-threatening. But a knee injury can be life-threatening, too.”

“And for some guys, this is all they can do. Think about a guy who’s married, with kids. How is he going to support his family?”

Suspensions of the sort Goodell meted out Wednesday have meaning beyond missed games and missed paychecks.

“It has financial ramifications in the short run, but in the long run it also impacts marketing and branding,” said David Carter, executive director of the Southern California Sports Business Institute, “and whether they ever get into the .”

Colorado Rockies first baseman Todd Helton played quarterback at Tennessee and he doesn’t understand the math of a bounty system: “Say you knock somebody out and you get $5,000, but then you get fined $75,000. I’ve got to talk to my accountant, but that doesn’t make any sense to me. That should be a deterrent in itself.”

NHL: Coyotes’ Torres banned 25 games for Hossa hit

384cbf04960e8767e830be44dcb10c60 NHL: Coyotes’ Torres banned 25 games for Hossa hit

() – winger has been suspended for 25 games for a devastating hit on forward Marian Hossa, the (NHL) said on Saturday.

If the 25-game ban is not served by the conclusion of the , Torres’ suspension will carry over into the 2012-13 NHL campaign and prohibit him from participating in .

Torres, who plans to take a few days to determine whether to appeal the ruling, launched himself into an unsuspecting Hossa with a shoulder-to-head hit more than half a second after the Chicago player passed the puck in Game Three of Tuesday’s Western Conference quarter-final.

Hossa lay on the ice of Chicago’s for several minutes before being taken away on a stretcher. He was released from hospital a few hours later.

There is no timetable for Hossa’s return, which is a severe blow to the Blackhawks as the 33-year-old Slovak was their regular-season .

While noting three separate rules were violated with the hit — interference, charging and to the head — league said two other factors were critical in determining the length of suspension.

“First, this violent and dangerous hit caused a severe injury,” Shanahan said in a statement. “Second, Torres not only is a repeat offender … his extensive supplemental discipline history consists mainly of acts very similar to this one — including two this season.”

Torres was banned indefinitely pending his Friday hearing at NHL headquarters in New York City and missed Thursday’s game won by Phoenix.

To serve his entire suspension in the playoffs and avoid missing time next season, the Coyotes would need to consecutive seven-game series, which would require them to advance to Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Finals.

Torres issued a brief statement in which he said his main concern is for Hossa to have a full recovery.

“I hope that he will be able to get back on the ice to compete again soon. I sincerely regret injuring Marian,” said Torres, who has been suspended three times and fined once in the past year.

“Regarding the severity of the suspension issued, I will take the next few days to decide whether or not to appeal the decision.”

RULING ‘SEVERE’

Phoenix General Manager Don Maloney called the ruling “very severe” for Torres and the Coyotes but thanked Shanahan for a thorough review of the incident.

“Raffi plays a hard, physical game yet this contact crossed the line on what is acceptable in our game today,” Maloney said in a statement.

“We hope Marian Hossa makes a full and speedy recovery as we all enjoy watching him perform. The club accepts the NHL’s decision and will focus on our game tonight.”

Torres was fined $2,500 in December for elbowing Colorado Avalanche defenseman Jan Hejda and suspended two days later for two games for an illegal hit on Nate Prosser during a game against the Minnesota Wild.

As a member of the Vancouver Canucks last season, Torres was banned for the final two games of the regular season and two playoff games for a hit on Edmonton’s Jordan Eberle.

Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville was fined $10,000 by the NHL earlier this week for calling the officiating in Game Three a “disgrace” for failing to call a penalty on Torres.

“It was a brutal hit,” Quenneville said after Chicago’s 3-2 on Tuesday. “I saw exactly what happened. It was right in front of me. How four guys missed it was hard. The refereeing tonight was a disgrace.”

CHICAGO (AP) — Mikkel Boedker scored in overtime for the second straight game and the beat the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 on Thursday night to take a 3-1 lead in the first-round series.

Boedker skated ahead of defenseman Nick and shoveled the puck under goalie at 2:15 in the fourth straight game that has gone to an extra period.

Game 5 is Saturday night in Arizona.

’s tap-in from the left side with 1:26 left in regulation tied it and marked the third time in four games the Blackhawks rallied to force overtime after pulling Crawford for an extra attacker.

and scored 44 seconds apart to give the Coyotes a 2-0 lead in the third. But Brendan Morrison, making his in the series, scored to make it 2-1.

Doan stripped the puck from Chicago’s , made a nice cross-ice pass to and then scored on a rebound of Whitney’s shot at 7:03 of the third. The Coyotes struck again quickly when got the puck near the boards and made a nice feed to Pyatt.

The Blackhawks played without star right wing Marian Hossa, who was driven to the ice and carried off on a stretcher in Game 3 after a shoulder-to-head hit from the Coyotes’ .

Torres was suspended indefinitely Wednesday and was scheduled for a hearing with the league Friday. The Blackhawks were already without rookie forward , who drew a five-game suspension for knocking Smith to the ice in Game 2.

DEVILS 4, PANTHERS 0

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Martin Brodeur bounced back from his shortest postseason performance with a record-setting 24th playoff shutout, and New Jersey beat Florida to tie the series 2-all.

Brodeur made 26 saves in taking over sole possession of the shutout mark from Patrick Roy. The 39-year-old goalie also added his second assist of the series, giving him 10 for his career — four behind leader Grant Fuhr. The effort came two days after Brodeur was lifted after giving up three goals in 22:18 in a 4-3 loss.

Zach Parise, Steve Bernier, Travis Zajac and Ilya Kovalchuk scored for New Jersey.

Brodeur made at least six outstanding saves in winning his 101st career postseason game, while seemingly benefiting from some early luck when Sean Bergenheim hit a post.

Game 5 is Saturday night in Florida.

CAPITALS 2, BRUINS 1

WASHINGTON (AP) — Playoff rookie Braden Holtby followed up a shaky outing with a superb one by making 44 saves, and Alexander Semin scored the go-ahead goal, helping Washington beat Stanley Cup champion Boston to tie the series at two games apiece.

Marcus Johansson put the puck past Tim Thomas less than 1 1/2 minutes after the opening faceoff, but Boston’s Rich Peverley tied it later in the first period. Semin put Washington ahead for good with 1:17 left in the second on a power-play goal, his second score of the series.

Game 5 is Saturday in Boston.

BLUES 2, SHARKS 1

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Brian Elliott made 24 saves, B.J. Crombeen and Andy McDonald scored and St. Louismoved one win away from the second round of the playoffs, beating San Jose to take a 3-1 series lead.

Patrik Berglund and David Perron each assisted on both goals for the Blues, who can win their first since 2002 by beating the Sharks in Game 5 at home Saturday night.

San Jose played well for long stretches, especially in the second and third period, but once again struggled to score against St. Louis’ stingy defense that allowed the fewest goals ever in an 82-game season. Joe Thornton broke the shutout with 1:07 remaining, but the Sharks couldn’t get the equalizer.

The Sharks are in danger of being knocked out in the first round after making it to the Western Conference final the previous two seasons. They need to win three straight games against a team they have beaten once in eight tries this season.

CHICAGO (AP) — Phoenix Coyotes forward was suspended indefinitely Wednesday for a hit that knocked Chicago’s Marian Hossa out of 3 in the teams’ opening-round .

Torres faces a Friday hearing with NHL officials in New York. The hearing was planned for Wednesday but was deferred at the request of the player and NHL Players’ Association.

Hossa was carried off the ice on a in the first period Tuesday night after Torres hit him with his shoulder and drove him to the ice. He was briefly hospitalized.

The team has not said if Hossa, who led the Blackhawks with 77 points this season, will return this season.

Phoenix leads the series 2-1 with Game 4 in Chicago on Thursday night.

Torres, who had run-ins with the Blackhawks previously while with Vancouver, wasn’t penalized for the play. Last season, in Game 3 of the first-round series, Torres delivered a hard hit to .

“It’s tough. You saw the hit,” Chicago’s said between periods of the game. “It’s just tough you don’t get a power play out of it. Hossa’s a big part of our team so someone’s going to have to step up and fill the void.”

Hossa was near the boards at and had just turned and passed the puck when Torres left his skates and delivered the hit. Hossa was down for about five minutes after medical personnel rushed to his side, the United Center crowd silent while they assessed the veteran player.

The Blackhawks said Hossa was expected to recover completely, without disclosing details of any possible injuries or problems.

“After initial evaluation on the ice, (Hossa) was taken by ambulance to the hospital for further testing, which yielded encouraging results,” team physician Dr. Michael Terry said in a statement. “He has been released from the hospital and we are monitoring him closely at home.”

Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville was unhappy that Torres was not penalized.

“It was a brutal hit,” Quenneville said after the game. “I saw exactly what happened. It was right in front of me. How four guys missed it was hard. The refereeing tonight was a disgrace.”

Seconds after the hit, Chicago’s Brandon Bolig was given a 10-minute misconduct for roughing.

“Of course we’re angry. It’s a natural reaction for anybody,” Chicago captain Jonathan Toews said. “Everyone loves Hoss, respects him and loves him as a teammate. … We wanted to win that game for him tonight, but came up short. We’ve got to focus on getting the next one for him.”

Asked if he was concerned about coming off his skates to make the hit, Torres said: “I’m not going to answer that.

“I felt like it was a hockey play. I was just trying to finish my hit out there,” he said.

The series has been rugged. Chicago forward Andrew Shaw was suspended for three games Tuesday after he ran into Phoenix goalie Mike Smith in Game 2.

Smith was playing the puck behind the net when Shaw skated in and caught the goalie in the head with his shoulder, knocking him to the ice. Shaw was ejected, but Smith got up after about five minutes and stayed in the game. He was in net for Tuesday night’s overtime win.

NHL said Shaw’s contact with Smith wasn’t incidental and that the rookie didn’t make a reasonable effort to avoid Smith.

“It is a forceful blow delivered by Shaw’s shoulder to Smith’s chin,” Shanahan said. “This is not a case of a skater and goaltender colliding while pursuing a loose puck. Shaw skated a considerable distance and hits the head of the stationary goaltender who has possession of the puck.”

Shaw would be eligible to return for a Game 6 if the series goes that far.

Hossa was carried off the ice on a stretcher in the first period Tuesday night after Torres hit him with his shoulder and drove him to the ice. He was briefly hospitalized. The team has not said if Hossa, who led the Blackhawks with 77 points this season, will return this season.

Phoenix leads the series 2-1 with Game 4 in Chicago on Thursday night.

NHL Playoffs: Up to 1 man to curb violence after another night marred by dirty play

(PhatzRadio / SI) — It’s been difficult to nail down all the key issues that will dominate when the is renegotiated this summer. The revenue split, of course. It’s always money. Olympic participation in Sochi and beyond. Holding on to salary in player swaps.

There’ll be plenty to talk about. But if NHL Players’ Association boss has any real interest in his post beyond proving he can outduel at high noon, he needs to place a very high priority on the issue that the league has all but abdicated.

Player safety.

Eight of Fehr’s bosses already have been suspended for dangerous actions that injured or threatened the safety of eight other bosses in just the first week of the playoffs. Last year, the total for the entire postseason was seven — and even given the heightened competitive drive at this time of year, doesn’t that number seem high?

But if the cumulative carnage of the last seven days hadn’t convinced Fehr of his obligation, the claiming of yet another victim by serial headhunter Raffi Torres on Tuesday night should do the trick.

This time he targeted Chicago’s supremely skilled Marian Hossa. The assault left Hossa motionless on the ice and ultimately required a stretcher and immediate relocation to a nearby hospital.

It was the sort of play that, sadly, has come to define the career of Torres, a player once so highly regarded that he was drafted fifth overall in 2000.

Now? Forget slap shots. Cheap shots are his specialty, as the heads of Jordan Eberle, , Nate Prosser, and perhaps most famously, , can attest.

SB Nation: Watch Torres’ hit on Hossa

The latest blow he inflicted was as nasty as any of those. You can argue it was only borderline late — and no doubt, his supporters in Phoenix will engage in all sorts of moral relativism as they do just that. What you can’t argue is that he traveled a great distance and launched himself off the ice before contact with an opponent who was completely vulnerable.

This wasn’t a play, and it wasn’t a good hit.

Good hits hurt. Good hits whittle away at an opponent’s will to compete.

Good hits don’t come with the risk of ending a career.

But that’s what might have happened here. And thanks to another missed call (and hasn’t this been a miserable week for the NHL’s beleaguered officials?), Torres never missed a shift while Hossa — a dangerous player in the best sense of the word — was viciously cut from a game Chicago ultimately lost in overtime, 3-2.

It’s clear that suspensions and fines have done little to curb Torres’ aberrant behavior. Absent the skill that made him a 43-goal scorer in juniors he’s now little more than a predator, trading on malevolence and the potential for chaos to maintain his job.

But it’s an act that already had worn thin with the Islanders, Oilers, Blue Jackets, Sabres and Canucks. It’s hard to imagine he’ll remain with the Coyotes after his contract expires next summer unless he manages to follow the path wisely chosen by reformed thugs like Matt Cooke or Colby Armstrong.

He’ll certainly have time to consider his options. One never knows what whim will guide NHL Brendan Shanahan (who again was the butt on online japery last night after suspending Pittsburgh’s Arron Asham for four games while giving Washington’s Nicklas Backstrom one for very similar infractions), but it seems likely Torres will be the ninth player suspended this spring. And given his history, it’s unlikely that Phoenix should count on his “services” for the rest of these playoffs, and possibly well beyond.

Good riddance.

Of course Torres is just a symptom of the bigger problem, and that’s where Fehr comes in.

When the league’s own website features news of *four* suspensions simultaneously, it’s clear that its confusingly inconsistent attempts to legislate respect are failing.

It’s going to take a different approach.

The PA needs to negotiate for a more active role in the disciplinary process. Not just a seat at the table, but perhaps two on a three-man committee that metes out the sort of justice that leaves no room for interpretation: clean up your act, or shop your limited skills elsewhere.

Maybe it’s something bolder, like reducing rosters by one in exchange for other concessions.

But before he even sits down with the league, the players have to be on the same page. They have to truly understand what’s at stake. And Fehr is the only one who can get them in a room make that happen.

Tuesday was a night filled with real hockey stories. Another 40-plus-save performance in Detroit from Pekka Rinne as the Predators pushed the Red Wings to the brink of elimination. A remarkable comeback by the Florida Panthers, who fell behind 3-0 barely six minutes into the game, switched goalies, and then stole Game 3 from the Devils in front of a stunned Prudential Center crowd. A remarkable game from future star Oliver Ekman-Larsson and an unimaginably soft goal allowed by Corey Crawford in overtime that tilted the series in Phoenix’s favor.

And how many people will be talking those points this morning?

By taking a stand, by representing the true best interests of his constituency, Fehr can change the direction of the game.

Maybe just in time.
