NFL: Eagles lose what likely was Reid’s final game as head coach in Philly

(PhatzRadio / AP) — PHILADELPHIA — Andy Reid stuck around for handshakes, then trudged into the Philadelphia Eagles’ tunnel that leads to the locker room.

He may never run out to coach another home game at the Linc.

With another dreary defeat on his resume, Reid wrapped up the home slate of his 14th season coaching the Eagles with serious questions about his future. Reid heard a few appreciative fans clapping for him on his way out, but the harsh reality is this: Reid’s time in Philly is all but over.

Owner told Reid in the preseason it was win or else.

The victories didn’t come with any regularity — only speculation about how and when Reid will leave the organization he turned into a perennial Super Bowl contender before falling into the NFC East basement.

The Washington Redskins spoiled Reid’s likely with a 27-20 win Sunday. With a chance to at least , the Eagles’ final series was especially painful in a season that mercifully ends next week at the .

The Eagles held on defense, forced a punt and started their last drive at their 15. They were at the Washington 17 when Nick Foles bounced a pass to , who was open in the right corner of the end zone on third down. Foles then hit for a 12- on fourth-and-2 to the 5 with 11 seconds left. After an incomplete pass, Foles was called for grounding, and the last second was automatically run off the clock.

That was it.

There were no signs blaming management, no “Fire Andy!” chants that had become popular at Lincoln Financial Field the latter half of this season. The pregame tailgate parties and “E-A-G-L-E-S! chants had been muted by a fan base fed up with the 4-11 record and Reid still in control.

The 11 losses are the same total Reid had in his of 1999 (5-11).

Reid refused to concede Sunday was his final home game.

“I don’t know that,” he said. “I have nothing to tell you on that. I’m the coach right now, and I’m just coaching. That’s what I’m doing, the best that I possibly can.”

Lurie’s preseason edict the Eagles needed “substantial improvement” over last season’s 8-8 record has dangled over the team and turned the final weeks into a guessing game of how Reid exits Philly. Will he get fired with about $6 million and one year left on his contract? Will he share a podium with Lurie as they announce an amicable parting?

McCoy, back in the lineup after missing the last four with a concussion, hoped it was the long shot option behind door No. 3: Bring back Reid for Year 15.

“I don’t see any other coaches that’s as good as coach Reid,” McCoy said. “He’s been here for so long that respect is demanded. When you think of the Philadelphia Eagles, you think of coach Reid.”

Reid inherited a 3-13 team in 1999, drafted Donovan McNabb with the No. 2 overall pick in that year’s draft, and quickly turned the franchise from laughingstock into a championship contender.

Reid has won more (130) than any coach in franchise history. He’s led the Eagles to nine playoff appearances, six division titles, five trips to the NFC and a Super Bowl loss.

“You’ve got to give him all the credit for making this a town,” defensive end Trent Cole said. “He made this a winning team.”

Reid instead had to watch the Redskins move closer toward a division title. The Redskins (9-6) can clinch the NFC East with a victory over Dallas at home Sunday. They haven’t won it since 1999 and last reached the playoffs in 2007.

The late comeback wasn’t enough to keep the Eagles from finishing 2-6 at home.

The Reid Era ends with a thud.

“It’s hard to say he should get fired, because I don’t think he should.” McCoy said.

Reid’s heartaches stretch beyond the final score. His oldest son, Garrett Reid, died during training camp after a long battle with drug addiction. Reid also dismissed defensive coordinator Juan Castillo, a longtime assistant and close friend, in a desperate move to make one last division run.

Reid coached the Eagles when they played at since-demolished Veterans Stadium and led them into one of the most exciting times in team history when the Linc opened in 2003. They played the final two of four straight NFC title games in front of one the rowdiest and wildest crowds in the NFL.

“We have great fans,” Reid said. “I’ve always said that we were kind of on the same page. When you stink, they let you know you stink, and when you’re doing good, they’re going to let you know you’re doing good. I got it. I understand. I understand the situation. I appreciate everything.”

(PhatzRadio / SI) — Leon Hall did not have to do much besides turn and wait for ’ painfully underthrown pass to land in his hands. It was as uncomplicated an as you’ll see, and yet it may go down as one of the most important plays during this Cincinnati Bengals season.

Up until that point, about nine minutes into the third quarter of Cincinnati’s 34-13 win over Philadelphia Thursday night, it was hard to distinguish the team fighting for a from the one spiraling toward a potential this .

The Bengals grabbed a 10-0 lead early, but the Eagles stormed back to take a 13-10 halftime edge and had flipped in their favor to start the third quarter.

Then, Hall’s play changed everything.

Over the next eight minutes, the Eagles coughed the ball up three more times, Cincinnati tossed 24 points on the board and that was all she wrote.

“We came out kind of flat; we jumped out to a big lead and got ahead of ourselves,” Bengals running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis told the . “In the second half, we buckled down and played ball.”

The Bengals badly needed a win in Philadelphia, just four days after letting one slip away against Dallas.

That Week 14 kept the Bengals outside of playoff positioning in the AFC, behind Pittsburgh. Thursday night’s come-from-behind win, no matter how it came about, keeps Cincinnati in control of its — beat the Steelers in Week 16 and the Ravens in , and the Bengals will be in the playoffs, possibly as AFC North champions.

Cincinnati started well, forcing the first of five Eagles’ turnovers on the game’s second snap and cashing it in for a Green-Ellis touchdown. A blocked punt four plays later set up a Josh Brown field goal.

At that point, it looked for all the world like the Bengals would coast to a blowout victory.

They did, eventually, but not before Eagles quarterback hit Riley Cooper for a TD and Alex Henery booted a pair of field goals to flip the scoreboard.

It took Cincinnati until Hall’s interception to right the ship again. Andy Dalton turned that key play into six points, shooting up the middle on an 11- scramble, which gave Cincinnati the lead again — this time, for good.

“We just weren’t clicking on all cylinders,” said Dalton of Cincinnati’s second-quarter drought. “We started off fast, we got great , we scored on our first two drives and then we kind of just came to a halt.

“You stay the course of the game … that’s why you play four quarters.”

Once Dalton put the Bengals back on top, their defense tightened the vice on Foles and the Eagles. A mere 49 seconds after Dalton’s rushing TD, defensive end Wallace Gilberry scooped up a Bryce Brown fumble and took it to the house.

The Eagles also fumbled the next two times they touched the — Clay Harbor after catching a quick pass from Foles, and Cedric Thornton trying to reel in a short kickoff.

By the time Philadelphia even ran another play successfully, the Bengals led by 21, a spurt capped off by a touchdown pass from Dalton to A.J. Green.

“All we can control is right now,” said Green of the now 8-6 Bengals. “That’s the biggest thing we’re doing is getting better each week. We keep making the plays, our defense keeps playing, we can take a shot at this thing.”

Philadelphia’s implosion, both Thursday night and this season, has been difficult to watch at times. The Eagles finally showed some life last Sunday in a last-second win over Tampa Bay, then appeared headed for another upset in this one.

As has been the case so often, though, the wheels fell off in a hurry.

They won’t receive any sympathy from Cincinnati, not with the Bengals fighting for their postseason lives. And certainly not after Cincinnati fell apart against the Cowboys, a multitude of dropped passes and late defensive breakdowns leading to a one-point loss.

“We definitely had our chances last week,” Dalton said, “and if we could’ve pulled out a win in that one, it could’ve helped us out.

“Fortunately, nothing changed in the playoff race, we still control our destiny and these next two are important.”

The Bengals may not get quite as much help in Weeks 16 and 17 — neither the Steelers nor the Ravens, both in need of wins themselves, figure to come unglued as Philadelphia did Thursday night. Cincinnati, however, probably figures it can avoid the mid-game trap it fell into against Philadelphia.

But this one could have turned out much, much worse for Cincinnati. That hot start aside, the Bengals looked the part of a team ready to toss away an opportunity.

That is, until Hall nabbed Foles’ errant throw and changed the complexion of the entire game — and, possibly, Cincinnati’s season.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — This was the Cam Newton who was the talk of the last season.

Newton threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the Carolina Panthers to a 30-22 victory over the on Monday night in a matchup of teams with the worst records in the .

Newton, who hadn’t played up to his sensational rookie season, showed no signs of a sophomore slump against Philadelphia’s porous pass defense. He finished 18 of 28 for 306 yards and had a of 125.

“I think my best game is still to come,” Newton said. “I’m still focused on getting better each and every week.”

Bryce Brown set a club with 178 yards rushing, including TD runs of 65 and 5 yards, but the Eagles (3-8) still lost their seventh .

Brown, filling in for injured running back , surpassed Correll Buckhalter’s rookie mark of 134 yards rushing in his first start since his senior year at Wichita East High School in 2008. But Brown also lost two , including one in Panthers’ territory.

Fellow rookie was so-so in his second straight start for , who also sat out with a concussion. Foles was 16 of 21 for 119 yards.

“The most important thing for me was for us to get the win and that didn’t happen tonight,” Brown said. “I felt like a lot of that had to do with my two turnovers. It really, really cost us.”

Carolina (3-8) went ahead 24-22 early in the fourth quarter on Graham Gano’s 23-.

Then the Panthers finally stopped Brown when it mattered most, stuffing him on a fourth-and-1 to take over on downs at their 40. Newton led them downfield, running in from the 2 to make it 30-22. Gano, signed last week, missed the extra point. But Brandon Boykin fumbled after a 44-yard kickoff return, the Panthers recovered and held the ball the final 4:29.

“It’s been a long time in coming,” Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. “Lots of people contributed and made plays. Real proud of what we did and the things we did to give ourselves a chance to win.”

Newton, the No, 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL draft, lived up to the hype by throwing for 4,051 yards with 21 TD passes and 14 TDs on the ground in his first year. He entered this game with only nine TD passes and four TDs rushing, a major disappointment for Panthers fans.

But Newton outshined a rookie seventh-round pick in his Monday night debut.

“We took some plays off his plate and really tried to balance it out and spread it among other players and he has really responded very well to those things,” Rivera said. “I think we had to interpret it as giving him a breath once in a while. These last few weeks, he’s played like the guy we believe he could become.”

Newton had a 24-yard TD toss over the middle to a wide-open Gary Barnidge for a 7-3 lead. He connected with Brandon LaFell on a 43-yard pass to make it 14-3 later in the first quarter. LaFell was wide open on the play, taking advantage of another breakdown in coverage in the secondary.

Since Todd Bowles replaced Juan Castillo as defensive coordinator, the Eagles have allowed 13 passing touchdowns and haven’t had an in five games.

Newton led a 95-yard drive to open the third quarter, finishing it off with a 1-yard leap to give the Panthers a 21-15 lead. Newton hit Louis Murphy for a 55-yard gain on a second-and-11 from Carolina’s 16.

A 51-yard pass interference call on Haruki Nakamura on Foles’ deep pass to put Philadelphia at the Panthers 5. Brown then ran in for the go-ahead score.

Brown broke loose early in the second quarter to get Philadelphia within 14-12. Brown started up the middle, cut outside and outran the defense down the right sideline for the seventh-longest TD run by a Philadelphia rookie. The Eagles inexplicably tried a 2-point conversion and failed.

“Bryce did what we thought he could do,” Eagles coach Andy Reid said. “He’s a talented kid. It’s a shame he had the two . He was on a roll. Those things cost you. He’ll learn from it. He’s got a great future.”

Alex Henery’s 45-yard field goal gave them a 15-14 lead. Henery kicked a 41-yarder to cut it to 14-6 in the second quarter. It was his 18th straight field goal, setting a team record.

The Eagles haven’t won since beating the defending Super Bowl champion to go 3-1, leaving fans and media to speculate about Reid’s job. Owner already has said that an 8-8 record would be “unacceptable” this year. The Eagles would have to finish 5-0 just to get there.

“I’m not worried about all the other things,” Reid said. “We haven’t talked about that. He’s been supportive. Obviously he’s competitive and wants to win games.”

Fans known for their hostile behavior have become apathetic toward their beloved Eagles. The Linc was about one-third empty for pregame introductions and plenty of seats remained empty at the start. There were boos early when the Eagles fell behind, but they lacked the usual luster.

The Panthers have shown they’re better than their record. They have lost by less than a touchdown, including a 2-point loss at Atlanta and a 1-point loss at Chicago.

“It’s a huge stage, Monday Night Football, on the road,” tackle Jordan Gross said. “It was just big for us and big for the guys on the team who haven’t experienced something like this.”

The injury-depleted Eagles lost wide receiver DeSean Jackson (sternum) and defensive tackle Fletcher Cox (tail bone) in the first half.

Notes: Neither Vick nor McCoy have been cleared to return to practice. … The Eagles inducted five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Troy Vincent and longtime front office executive Leo Carlin into the team’s Hall of Fame at halftime. … Brown’s 65-yard TD run was longest for Eagles since McCoy’s 66-yarder, against New York Giants, Nov. 1, 2009. … Buckhalter had 134 yards rushing vs. Arizona on Oct. 7, 2001. … Newton led the Panthers with 52 yards rushing.

MAVERICKS 109, RAPTORS 104.

DALLAS (AP) — O.J. Mayo and Chris Kaman each scored 22 points as the short-handed Mavericks won their third straight.

The Mavericks, who jumped out to a 16-point lead early in the second quarter, improved to 4-1 for the first time since 2007-08.

Dallas played without forwards Shawn Marion and Elton Brand. Marion was sidelined with a sprained left knee ligament, and Brand left the team for the birth of his second child.

Andrea Bargnani scored 25 points for Toronto and DeMar DeRozan added 24. Raptors starting point guard Kyle Lowry didn’t play after he sprained his right ankle Tuesday night against Oklahoma City.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Matt Ryan threw touchdown passes on Atlanta’s first three possessions against Philadelphia and new , and the Falcons remained the NFL’s only unbeaten team with a 30-17 victory over the Eagles on Sunday.

The Falcons improved to 7-0 for the first time in while the Eagles (3-4) lost after a bye for the first time in 14 under since 1999.

Ryan finished 22 of 29 for 262 yards and three TDs for his first win against his in three tries.

didn’t turn the ball over for once, but he played so-so and failed to beat his former team in his second start against the Falcons since returning to the NFL in 2009.

The Falcons scored on their first six possessions before punting for the first time with 5:35 left.

GIANTS 29, COWBOYS 24

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — kicked two of his five field goals in the and Eli Manning and New York remained undefeated at Cowboys Stadium with a win after blowing a 23-point lead.

The Giants overcame a fourth-quarter deficit to win for the 20th time in Manning’s career. None were quite like this one.

New York (6-2) led 23-0 just 2 minutes into the second quarter when defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul returned an interception 28 yards for a touchdown. That was the third interception thrown by , among six turnovers by Dallas (3-4).

The NFC East-leading Giants didn’t score again until Tynes kicked a 43- with 10:20 left for a 26-24 lead. He added a 37-yarder after Stevie Brown recovered a .

Dallas celebrated what seemed to be a 37- catch by Dez Bryant with 10 seconds left. But the play was reviewed, showing that Bryant’s hand touched out of bounds first.

BRONCOS 34, SAINTS 14

DENVER (AP) — Peyton Manning shook off a bleeding right thumb after banging it on an opponent’s helmet to throw for 305 yards and three scores and lead Denver past New Orleans.

It was Manning’s fifth straight 300-yard game, setting a franchise record for Denver (4-3) and matching his personal best.

The Broncos won two in a row for the first time this season. They gained 530 yards against the Saints (2-5), who came in with the NFL’s worst defense.

Denver held Drew Brees and the league’s top-ranked passing offense to 213 yards passing in Joe Vitt’s debut as interim coach after serving a six-game suspension for the team’s bounty scandal.

LIONS 28, SEAHAWKS 24

DETROIT (AP) — Matthew Stafford threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to Titus Young with 20 seconds left.

Zach Miller made a spectacular, 16-yard catch on a toss from Russell Wilson with 5:27 left to put the Seahawks ahead.

Seattle (4-4) couldn’t stop the Lions (3-4) on their last possession.

Stafford led a 16-play drive that started at Detroit 20 with 5:27 remaining. The possession began with a 15-yard pass to Calvin Johnson and was kept alive with third-down conversion passes to Johnson in Lions territory and to Joique Bell to set up the winning score from just outside the goal line.

STEELERS 27, REDSKINS 12

PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Steelers turned Robert Griffin III into just another rookie quarterback, swarming Washington’s precocious star in a dominant win.

Griffin completed just 16 of 34 passes for 177 yards and a score while managing 8 yards rushing.

Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger had no such issues, throwing for 222 yards and three touchdowns as the Steelers (4-3) won for the first time this season.

Jonathan Dwyer added 107 yards rushing in his second NFL start. Pittsburgh jumped on Washington (3-5) early, scoring on its first four possessions and never letting Griffin get loose.

Heath Miller caught four passes for 46 yards and his sixth touchdown of the season for the Steelers.

BROWNS 7, CHARGERS 6

CLEVELAND (AP) — Rookie Trent Richardson rushed for 122 yards and scored a touchdown in the Browns’ soggy, wind-whipped win.

Richardson, pulled last week at Indianapolis when he was ineffective because of a rib injury, carried 24 times as the Browns (2-6) won their second straight game at home — and first for new owner Jimmy Haslam. Richardson scored on a 26-yard run in the first quarter and the Browns were able to hang on despite not generating much offense in blustery, rainy conditions.

The Chargers (3-4) dropped their third straight. San Diego had a final chance, but quarterback Philip Rivers’ pass was batted away by Browns cornerback Buster Skrine with 1:24 left.

Rivers finished 18 of 34 for 154 yards

PATRIOTS 45, RAMS 7

LONDON (AP) — Tom Brady led touchdown drives on the first five possessions and New England cruised at Wembley Stadium.

The Rams looked ready to put up a fight when Sam Bradford hit Chris Givens with a 50-yard touchdown pass on the opening drive. But Brady cut through the St. Louis defense at will to give New England a 28-7 lead by halftime, then hit Brandon Lloyd for a 9-yard score to start the third quarter.

New England surpassed 350 yards of total offense for the 17th straight game, breaking an NFL record set by the Rams in 1999-2000.

COLTS 19, TITANS 13 OT

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Andrew Luck threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Vick Ballard at 4:49 of overtime.

The Colts (4-3) have beaten Tennessee in seven of eight overall and seven of the past 10 in Nashville.

The Colts did it with Luck leading a pair of 80-yard touchdown drives. The top pick overall in April’s draft set up Delone Carter’s 1-yard TD run that tied it up at 13 with 3:24 left in the .

In overtime, Ballard capped the drive, taking a screen pass and going up the left side where he jumped toward the goal line for the TD.

The Titans fell to 3-5.

BEARS 23, PANTHERS 22

CHICAGO (AP) — Robbie Gould kicked a 41-yard field goal as time expired to rally the Bears.

The Bears trailed 19-7 in the fourth quarter when the game turned in a big way.

Chicago (6-1) took over on the Carolina 38 after Brad Nortman shanked a 6-yard punt, and Jay Cutler connected with Kellen Davis on a 12-yard scoring pass with just under seven minutes left.

Then, on Carolina’s next play, Steve Smith slipped on a pass pattern and Tim Jennings returned his second interception of the game 25 yards for the go-ahead score.

drove the Panthers to the Chicago 27, and Justin Medlock’s 45-yard field goal hit the right upright and went through to put Carolina (1-6) ahead 22-20 with 2:27 remaining. Medlock had five field goals.

On the winning drive, Cutler moved the Bears 55 yards to the 23 to set up Gould’s kick. The Panthers lost their fifth straight game.

PACKERS 24, JAGUARS 15

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Aaron Rodgers went back to an old favorite, connecting with Donald Driver on a 4-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Rodgers threw two touchdowns, passing Bart Starr for second place on Green Bay’s all-time list, and Dezman Moses gave the Packers their first touchdown on a blocked punt in almost 22 years. But Green Bay (5-3) had a surprisingly tough time with the NFL’s worst team, which lost its fourth straight.

Playing without top receivers Greg Jennings and Jordy Nelson, Green Bay’s offense struggled to find its groove all afternoon. Jacksonville (1-6), meanwhile, looked unfazed by the absence of Maurice Jones-Drew. Backup Rashad Jennings finished with 115 yards of offense, and Cecil Shorts had a career-best 116 yards on eight catches.

DOLPHINS 30, JETS 9

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Matt Moore stepped in for an injured Ryan Tannehill and Miami rolled to its third straight victory.

Moore threw a touchdown pass to Anthony Fasano, Olivier Vernon recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a touchdown and blocked a field goal, and the Dolphins smothered Mark Sanchez and the Jets’ offense Sunday.

After a week of trash talking between both sides, the argument was won on the field by the Dolphins (4-3) — and it was no contest. They were helped by some hideous play by the Jets (3-5), who have lost two straight.

Tannehill injured his left knee and quadriceps muscle on a sack on third down by Calvin Pace on the Dolphins’ second possession of the game. Moore finished 11 of 19 for 131 yards.

Sanchez was 28 of 54 for 283 yards with a touchdown and interception.

RAIDERS 26, CHIEFS 16

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Carson Palmer threw for 209 yards and two touchdowns, and Oakland stuffed struggling Kansas City for its sixth straight win at Arrowhead Stadium.

Sebastian Janikowski was perfect on four field-goal attempts, and the Raiders (3-4) nearly became the third straight team to keep the Kansas City offense out of the end zone.

The Chiefs (1-6) scored their only touchdown with 2:27 left in the game.

Darren McFadden ran for 114 yards, and Denarius Moore and Darrius Heyward-Bey had touchdown catches for Oakland, which has won two straight after losing four of its first five.

Matt Cassel threw for 218 yards in place of Brady Quinn, who left in the first half with what the team called a “head injury.” Quinn had started his second straight game.

The Chiefs have lost four straight and still have not led in regulation this season.

NFL Recap: Eagles fire defensive coordinator Castillo

Defensive Coordinator Juan Castillo, left, of the talks with Russ Grimm of the before the start of their game at on November 13, 2011 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) Juan Castillo’s offense-to-defense coaching experiment backfired in Philadelphia, costing the defensive coordinator his job.

Castillo was fired by on Tuesday and replaced by . It was the first time Reid dismissed a coach midseason in his 14 years in charge.

“I put Juan in this situation and things didn’t work out the way I had hoped,” Reid said. “I take full responsibility for putting him in that situation.”

Reid’s decision last year to promote Castillo after 13 seasons as offensive line coach was a stunner. It came after a long search and with new Jim Washburn already in place running a wide-nine scheme that isn’t widely used.

Castillo was under the microscope right from the start, with nearly every move he made scrutinized intensely. He seemed overmatched in his first season and the defense struggled as Philadelphia started 4-8. But Castillo’s unit showed enough improvement during a season-ending four- that he stuck around.

Until now.

“I have to do what I think is right whether it’s with public opinion,” Reid said, “or against public opinion.”

The move came two days after the defense blew a 10-point lead with 5:18 remaining and lost 26-23 in overtime to Detroit. A week earlier, the defense allowed Pittsburgh to rally for a winning field goal in the final seconds.

The Eagles (3-3) are on a bye this week, and Reid hinted more changes could be coming. An offense that features several dynamic players is next-to-last in scoring and turning the ball over in bunches.

“Please understand that offense, defense and special teams right now, we need to get better,” Reid said. “I’m going to continue to work through that and it’s my responsibility to do that. I’m just bringing this to you because this is what’s happened so far. I’m still evaluating.”

Does that mean may get benched for rookie Nick Foles?

“As I sit here today, Michael’s the starting quarterback,” Reid said.

That’s not much of an endorsement.

Reid doesn’t have much job security himself, so he’ll likely try anything to win. Team owner already stated in the preseason that another 8-8 season would be “unacceptable.” Lurie even said last year that he considered firing Reid after the team failed to live up to high expectations.

“You fight to win as a football team,” Reid said. “You try to make your football team the best possible football team they can be. You try to better yourself every day. You want your coaches to better themselves every day. You want your players to do it and you hope you have an influence on helping them become the best they can be.

“That’s my job and that’s how I go about doing it.”

Castillo was with the Eagles for 18 years, longer than any coach in franchise history.

“One of the tougher things I’ve had to do,” Reid said.

Castillo’s defense held the Lions in check for three quarters on Sunday, allowing just a pair of field goals. All-Pro wide receiver Calvin Johnson had one catch for 28 yards and Matthew Stafford was 7 of 21 passing. But, according to defensive players, the Eagles inexplicably changed their game plan in the . They started blitzing more in an effort to pressure Stafford. Also, cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha didn’t shadow Johnson the way he did the first three quarters.

Stafford picked apart the defense, Johnson had a big day and the Lions scored 20 points in the fourth quarter and overtime.

“I was on him most of the game,” Asomugha said of covering Johnson. “I think when we got to the fourth quarter, there was a lot more trying to give him a different look.”

Reid disputed that assessment a day later, saying “there wasn’t a great change of scheme on what we did in the first three quarters.”

Regardless, Castillo is gone.

Castillo joined the Eagles in 1995 as an offensive assistant under coach Ray Rhodes. He was promoted to tight ends coach in 1997, and then offensive line coach in 1998.

Bowles becomes Philadelphia’s third defensive coordinator since longtime assistant Jim Johnson died in 2009 following a battle with cancer. Sean McDermott had the job for two seasons and Castillo lasted 22 games.

“I’m very familiar with the personnel,” Bowles said. “That’s not going to be a problem. Our thing right now is to go over our self-scouting, see what we do well and what we don’t do well and try to minimize the things we don’t do well, if not get rid of them all together. Make sure we’re playing to each player’s strength.”

Bowles was 2-1 as the interim for Miami last season. The former Temple star played eight seasons in the NFL as a safety, including seven years with the Washington Redskins. Bowles is in his 13th season as an assistant coach. He began his NFL coaching career with the New York Jets in 2000 as a , spent four years in Cleveland, three in Dallas and four with the Dolphins before coming here.

“Well being a player, you can put yourself in the same situations because you’ve been in them so when a guy is coming to you with problems, you can refer back to your playing days,” Bowles said. “You don’t have to agree with them. You say, `This is why you’re doing this, so this is why they’re doing this to you.’ It just helps the relationship go a lot better.”

Reid wanted to interview Bowles after firing McDermott, but was denied permission by Miami.

“He has a good understanding of the game, not only the secondary but the whole picture,” Reid said of Bowles. “He gets it and he understands how to tie it all together. He’s detailed with his techniques. He relates well with the players. He’s a smart guy and he works hard. Those are normally good qualities to have.”

The decision comes at a critical time for the Eagles, who are just one game behind the Super Bowl-champion Giants (4-2) in the . New York is already 0-2 in the division, including a loss in Philadelphia last month. The bye allows Bowles time to set his strategy and move forward. He has to figure things out quickly, however, because the Eagles host the Atlanta Falcons (6-0) on Oct. 28.

“I don’t think there will be a transition period,” Reid said. “I’m not looking at that as I’m making this move. He understands it and knows it. I’m not looking for transition periods right now. I’m looking for him to step in and do his job to the best of his ability with the players that he has. I think he has good football players and good coaches around him. I expect us to do better.”

If not, Reid could be next to go.
