(PhatzRadio / AP) — Anna Fenninger of Austria upstaged the to win a super-G race Sunday in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, while overall World Cup winner was placed under police protection after organizers received a against the Slovenian.

Maze finished fourth in the race and said she was not disturbed by the emailed threat. But she had two bodyguards close by after the race.

The death threat came in an received , after Maze had won the and broken the points record for a season.

“That’s sad. If somebody is strong and showing good performances and perfect in the thing you are doing, there are people who want to disturb you,” Maze said. “I guess it’s part of the game but it didn’t disturb me that much.

“It shouldn’t be part of the game but life is not perfect. It’s not nice for me, it’s not nice for my team. I haven’t seen the email … they want to ruin your day, ruin the record, but I enjoyed the day 100 per cent,” Maze said.

Peter Fischer, chief of the , said the email came from an anonymous source and that it was immediately turned over to the police.

“We had to take it seriously, our job is to keep everyone safe here,” Fischer said. “Police took over the case and provided protection.”

Maze said she had never felt safer in her life, “I’ve had police in front my door all the time since yesterday.”

Fenninger beat favourite Maria Hoefl-Riesch by 0.20 of a second on the course for her third and second of the season.

The Austrian also saw off of the United States in third and Maze in fourth.

Mancuso and Maze are still in competition for the season super-G title, which will now be decided at the in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, in two weeks.

Maze is already assured of the overall title and became the first skier to collect more than 2,000 points in a season by winning Saturday’s downhill on the same slope. She now has 2,074 points.

Mancuso said she lost the race in the middle section of the course.

“I was not good in the turning section, I don’t know what it is, maybe a question of confidence,” said the American, who was second in Friday’s super-G on the same slope.

“I am happy to be on the podium, just trying my best every day. I am enjoying it with the sun out. I wish I could have gained some more points on her [Maze], I need all the luck on my side. I need to win the (last) race and then anything can happen,” Mancuso said.

Maze leads Mancuso 420-365 in the super G standings with a maximum of 100 points up for grabs in the final race.

Like Mancuso, Maze also said she had problems with the jump in the middle section. “It was pretty difficult to find the right line, I didn’t do my best but fourth is fine,” Maze said.

Maze won the gold medal in the super-G at the world championships last month in Schladming, Austria, while Mancuso took bronze.

Fenninger covered the 2.37-kilometre course in one minute, 20.43 seconds. Hoefl-Riesch, who was hoping for her 25th World Cup win, missed it by 0.20, while Mancuso was 0.23 off the pace. Maze was 0.43 0 back.

“I deserved it, I was ready for this win and I believed in myself,” Fenninger said. “I made a few mistakes on the top part and really risked everything on the bottom section, but everything came together. It feels good.”

Fenninger’s previous two wins were in giant slalom.

Hoefl-Riesch, basking in the sunshine and surrounded by family and friends, took her second place in stride.

“It was a great day for me, no matter what,” the German skier said.

Aksel Lund Svindal World Cup super-G title

(PhatzRadio / CBC Sports) — Aksel Lund Svindal clinched the World Cup super-G title Sunday in Kvitfjell after winning his first race in Norway.

The Norwegian edged Austria’s Georg Streitberger by 0.52 seconds to win in one minute 29.79 seconds. Werner Heel of Italy ended third, 0.57 seconds back.

The victory gives Svindal an unassailable 480 points, ahead of Italy’s Matteo Marsaglia on 249 and Matthias Mayer of Austria with 228.

Jan Hudec of Calgary finished 16th, while Canadian teammates Erik Guay and Manuel Osborne-Paradis didn’t finish their runs.

“It was a disappointing day for us across the board,” said Canadian speed coach John McBride. “Jan ended up 16th but the way he was , it was almost maddening — he made some mistakes but he could have been top five today. I was kind of disappointed we couldn’t bring the same positive energy from (Saturday) into today.”

Hudec was sixth in Saturday’s downhill.

Guay, from Mont-Tremblant, Que., was 26th at the third interval before he skied out. Osborne-Paradis, from Vancouver, started 51st before going out in the top section of the course.

“Man, that was a long day to go out on the fourth gate!” tweeted Osborne-Paradis, who finished fourth in the downhill a day earlier, missing the podium by one one-hundredth of a second.

In the overall standings, Svindal closed in on leader Marcel Hirscher with six races left. The Austrian has 1,215 points, while Svindal is second with 1,186.

Ted Ligety of the United States is third with 809.

Korir leads Kenyan sweep at Boston Marathon

07540301bb0c13bc2e6f81d96224b6a9 Korir leads Kenyan sweep at Boston Marathon

() – Kenyan runners swept both podiums on Monday as Wesley Korir won the men’s race and Sharon Cherop triumphed in the women’s edition in steamy temperatures that slowed the defending champions.

Korir, 29, a graduate of the University of Louisville in Kentucky, finished in two hours 12 minutes and 40 seconds, the slowest Boston since 2007 and almost 10 minutes slower than the world’s set last year by Geoffrey .

Levy Matebo came in second and Bernard Kipyego was third while Mutai, the world’s top-ranked marathon runner, dropped out of Monday’s race at the 30-kilometer mark due to .

Korir, in sixth place after 20 miles, told reporters he had run a cautious race early on because of the but then set about gradually reeling in Matebo and the rest of the field.

“When the guys took off I tried to go with them but they were taking off at a really hard pace. I knew that if I were to go too hard too soon to quickly, I’m going to up,” said Korir.

“I was more concerned about myself because it’s really, really hot out there. At that point I was like it’s going to be better for me to be conservative and to be safe.”

The Kenyan, a permanent U.S. resident who hopes to gain citizenship within a few years, said he spent much of the race “praying and singing,” thinking about his wife and daughter, and fighting an occasional to “throw in the towel.”

Kenya also notched a sweep in the women’s race. Behind Cherop’s winning time of two hours 31 minutes and 50 seconds were Jemima Jelagat Sumgong, dropped in a furious last-minute dash by the winner, and Georgina Rono.

“We started slowly, we did not start fast like last year,” Cherop, who finished third in 2011, told reporters. “I was really prepared this time around … it’s not my first time running in the heat and humidity.”

Caroline Kilel dropped off the lead pack in the of the race and was seen taking a walking break a few miles from the finish. Shortly before slowing, the slender Kenyan took a slight body check at a water stop.

Temperatures were above 80 Fahrenheit (26.6 Celsius) even as the speediest elite runners made their way toward the end of the 26.2-mile course.

Race had urged many non-elite runners to not start the race due to potentially dangerous, and certainly sub-optimal, conditions, and several thousand took up an offer to defer their entries to 2013.

Altogether, six of the 17 elite women and four of 20 elite men runners did not finish the race. Race ramped up their emergency services in anticipation of a wave of heat-related injuries.

Supplies of water and ice were increased and the number of medical personnel on hand was greater than in a typical year. Even elite runners spent more time drinking fluids and dousing themselves with water.

In the men’s wheelchair division Canadian Joshua Cassidy set a world record at 1:18:25, two seconds below the previous mark set in 2004 by South African Ernest Van Dyk, nine-time winner.

Horse Racing Recap: National can never be risk-free, says racing chief

03344242205c8143feb3a00641799fd1 Horse Racing Recap: National can never be risk free, says racing chief

(AP) – The head of British insists the can never be risk-free and warned against any knee-jerk reaction in the wake of two dying for the second straight year in the world’s most grueling jumps race.

Animal welfare groups have renewed calls for to be made to the format of the event following pre-race favorite and According to Pete being put down after sustaining injuries in an incident-packed 2012 edition.

It took the number of horses to have died in the National in the past 12 years to 10, with 20 having died in races over the Grand National since 2001.

A reduction in the size of the field or withdrawing some of the more dangerous fences – including the much-feared Becher’s Brook – are some of the suggestions made by critics, with others saying the race should be banned entirely.

This year’s National was the first to be run since an extensive safety review in 2011, leading to a number of changes to fences and race conditions, and are collating information from the race ahead of another investigation.

However, Paul Bittar, of the Authority, said the race has actually become safer.

“The since 2000 was the safest on record for the Grand National with a of 1.5 percent compared to 3.3 percent at the start of the ,” Bittar said Sunday. “Sadly there have been two fatalities in each of the last two of the race.

“Naturally our is for there to be no fatalities, but we also recognize that we cannot remove risk altogether from such a competitive activity.”

Forty horses compete in the National, which is run over 4 1/2 miles, but only 15 made it to the finish. Many, including According to Pete, tumbled after colliding with horses that fell.

Both Synchronised and According to Pete went down at Becher’s Brook, a that is jumped twice and has a drop of between 5 feet, 2 inches and 5 feet, 8 inches after modifications in 2011.

“Forty horses is a heck of a lot,” said Gavin Grant, chief executive of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. “Secondly, there are unique jumps there that horses aren’t experienced in going over and I think we need to look at those jumps again.

“Becher’s Brook has claimed another casualty and perhaps it’s time for that to go. We need to look at the landing areas. Some improvements have been made there, but when you’ve got a drop on the other side of the fence a horse isn’t expecting that.”

Paul Nicholls, trainer of winning horse Neptune Collonges, said not much more can be done to protect the horses.

“They probably have better health care than we have,” said Nicholls, whose horse Ornais was one of the two fatalities from the 2011 race. “If people are going to continue to participate in sport, there is going to be both a human and animal risk.

“The worst thing you can do is to go too far. You make the fences smaller, they go faster and you get more fallers.”

There have been no serious incidents in the four races at the course since changes were made to it last year.

“At this stage, we believe it would be premature to suggest that modifications to the course and other changes have not been effective or will not yet prove to be effective,” Bittar said.
