NBA: Jeremy Lin headed to Rockets for $25M

Jeremy Lin initially agreed to a four-year offer sheet with the Rockets worth about $28 million. But the team revised the offer and made it three years and included a guaranteed salary of about $15 million in the third year. (Al Bello/Getty Images)

(PhatzRadio / ) — Jeremy Lin is leaving New York and taking Linsanity to Houston.

The announced Tuesday night that they will not match the Houston Rocket’s three-year, US$25 million offer for Lin, a restricted free-agent.

New York officially had until 11:59 EDT to decide whether to re-sign Lin, who became an international phenomenon in the media glare of Big Apple.

The Rockets made it tough for the Knicks to sign off on keeping him by backloading their offer sheet with a $15 million salary in the . If the Knicks agreed to that deal, they would’ve faced a hefty in 2014-15 because of other big contracts on their books — between $30-40 million.

Lin now returns to Houston, where he spent about two weeks in December during training camp. The Rockets liked what they saw in the undrafted point guard, but had to waive him because they had and Goran on the roster.

The initially reported the Knicks’ decision, citing an unidentified person briefed on the situation.

One sports consultant said the adjustment to the offer sheet was a stroke of genius by Rockets general manager Daryl .

“The Rockets deserve a lot of credit for the way they’ve gone about this,” said , president of Chicago-based SportsCorp. “It was extremely intelligent — with an assassin’s touch.”

The Knicks, though, gave Lin his first shot, picking him up after the Rockets waived him. He was briefly demoted to the developmental league, recalled and finally got his chance when D’Antoni put him in with the Knicks floundering at 8-15. Lin scored a career-high 25 points in a 99-92 win over and “Linsanity” was born.

Lin had slept on teammate Fields’ couch the night before, still refusing to get his own place as he headed into that week, knowing the Knicks would have to decide whether to cut him or guarantee his contract for the rest of the season.

But Lin proved more than just an overnight sensation — he had 28 and 23 points in his first two NBA starts, and then scored a career-high 38 in a 92-85 victory over Kobe Bryant and the Los Angeles Lakers.

The stock price for Inc. surged on the production and popularity of the team’s international star. Lin also made the Sports Illustrated cover in consecutive weeks, only the 12th athlete to hold that distinction since 1990. On Tuesday, Lin had more than 829,000 followers on .

The more opponents saw Lin, though, the more they seemed to figure him out as the season wore on. He went 1 for 11 with eight turnovers in a humbling, nationally televised loss in Miami and the Knicks dropped their first six games in March.

D’Antoni resigned in mid-March and Lin hurt his left knee less than two weeks later. The Knicks revealed on April 1 that Lin needed surgery to repair a meniscus tear and would miss six weeks.

The Knicks made the playoffs behind surging , but bowed out to Miami in the first round. The Rockets, meanwhile, missed the post-season for the third straight year and have spent the off-season completely rebuilding their roster.

Houston has been trying to put together a package of assets and draft picks to offer Orlando in exchange for disgruntled All-Star centre Dwight Howard. In the process, the Rockets lost the unrestricted to Phoenix, then traded Lowry to Toronto in exchange for a future first-round pick with lottery protection.

With no true point guard left on the roster, the Rockets turned back to Lin. The Knicks may have shown their hand when they brought back Raymond Felton in a sign-and-trade deal with Portland.

Houston, meanwhile, jumped at the chance to reacquire their popularity in China, where Yao Ming became a larger-than-life figure. Many Rockets landed lucrative shoe contracts with Chinese companies on Yao’s coattails and Rockets’ games drew massive television ratings there.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Irving began his first pro season as the top pick and ended it as the top rookie.

Cleveland’s smooth, playmaking point guard has been chosen as the ”s Rookie of the Year, a person familiar with the voting told The Associated Press on Sunday.

Irving’s selection is hardly a surprise since the 20-year-old led all first-year players in scoring – 18.5 points per game – and renewed hope for Cleveland’s franchise. He’ll receive the award on Tuesday, said the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the league has not yet announced the winner.

ESPN.com and The first reported Irving’s win.

Results of the voting won’t be available until Tuesday, but it’s safe to assume Irving’s will be lopsided. After Minnesota guard suffered a season-ending knee injury, Irving was far and away the best all-around player in the rookie class.

The used the No. 1 overall pick in last year’s draft to select Irving, who played in just 11 games as a freshman at Duke because of a toe injury. However, it didn’t take long for the 6-foot-3 Irving to establish himself as one of the game’s rising stars.

With a on the floor, Irving made clutch shots, orchestrated fourth-quarter and managed to keep the Cavs competitive and in the for several months before they traded guard in March and injuries took their toll.

Irving is the second Cavaliers player to win the award, joining LeBron James in 2004.

Irving’s is the final postseason award to be announced by the league. On Saturday, James, who spent in Cleveland before signing with Miami, won his third in four seasons.

Irving recently treated himself to a postseason vacation in the Bahamas. In June, he’s expected to play on the Cavs summer league team in Las Vegas and will be part of a U.S. Select Team which will train against the American Olympic team going to the London Games.

He added just enough big baskets in the second half to keep the Lakers ahead, finishing with his third straight 30-point game as the Masked Mamba.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Derrick Rose tied a season high with 35 points, and Joakim Noah had 11 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Chicago Bulls to their sixth straight win.

In a battle of division leaders, the Bulls made all the big shots over the final minutes to end a three-game losing streak against the Sixers.

Leading 91-89, the Bulls turned the ball over, but Andre Iguodala tossed up an air ball on a 3-point attempt. Again the Bulls turned the ball over, and this time it was Thaddeus Young who missed a for the Sixers. At least his shot hit the rim.

Rose made them pay for the misses, going left hand-to-right for a one-handed shot on the run for a 93-89 lead with 20.2 seconds left.

Iguodala’s tying 3 clanged off the backboard and finished off the Sixers.

SUNS 96, KINGS 88

PHOENIX (AP) — Steve Nash had 19 points, Marcin Gortat scored 14 and matched his season high with 17 rebounds, and the Suns earned their third consecutive victory.

In all three wins, the Suns rallied from double-digit deficits, something the franchise hadn’t done since November 2002.

(PhatzRadio / ) — ORLANDO – Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love took just 19 three-pointers his rookie season in 2008-09. He made just two.

“Coming into the league, I was told not to shoot three-point shots,” Love said.

Three seasons later, Love is the 2012 Three-Point Contest champion.

People replaced cars as props in the NBA’s to wrap up All-Star Saturday night, won in the fan vote by Utah Jazz Jeremy Evans.

Evans, who bombed on his first dunk and drew boos from the crowd, relied on a teammate to pull off the most creative one to win.

“I felt like the first dunk I did was horrible,” Evans said.

sat on a chair and flipped two basketballs in the air. Evans not only jumped over him but he dunked both. Last year, forward Blake Griffin electrified the crowd by jumping over the hood of a car.

This was the first year that fans had total control of voting, a major tweak from past competitions.

Three million votes were cast by fans via text message and social media, with 29% going to Evans in the four-man field.

“People didn’t really know who I was before this,” said Evans, a second-year, 6-9 forward who averages just 1.7 points in 5.6 minutes per game this season. “But after tonight, hopefully they know my name.”

Evans was a late replacement for injured guard Iman Shumpert and didn’t begin practicing until Thursday. He had less than three hours of preparation.

His final one was a “Mailman” dunk, a homage to Jazz legend Karl Malone with Evans’ hand behind his head and jumping over under 6-foot comedian Kevin Hart.

Chase Budinger of the Houston Rockets got the crowd into it with the opening dunk. Rapper Sean Combs, aka P. Diddy, flipped the ball in the air as Budinger jumped over him for the jam.

But Budinger’s next dunk was unimaginative as he lost the momentum.

Indiana Pacers guard Paul George’s best dunk was a glow-in-the-dark uniform, basketball and rim with the lights turned out. He threw down an acrobatic windmill. He fizzled, too.

Minnesota rookie Derrick Williams had a miserable night. He ended the contest by failing on multiple attempts to go between his legs with the ball and even teammate ’s assistance wasn’t enough. So Williams conceded by doing a basic dunk to beat the time limit and end the competition on a low note.

This year’s contest lasted three rounds, but the four participants had only two minutes per round to complete a single dunk.

Love defeated Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant 17-14 in the finals tiebreaker Saturday after Love and Durant each had 16 points in the final round, which eliminated 2011 winner and Miami Heat forward James Jones.

“I’m in that competitive mode so it’s hard to answer some of these questions,” Love said. “But sitting up here with the hardware, it feels good.”

Love also won $50,000.

An All-Star for the second time this season, the 6-10 Love is fourth in the league in scoring (25 points per game) and second in rebounding (14 per game).

He is the just the second power forward to win the event. forward won in 2006.

Jones had a strong first round, scoring 22 points — the highest total in the event since Jason Kapono had 25 points in 2008. He made 13 of his last 15 shots in the first round, including both bonus balls, which count for two points. James made just 10 of 25 shots in the final round.

Love shot first in the tiebreaker. “I was a little bit worried about Kevin coming up behind me,” he said. “Once I saw that he was added to the competition, I thought, ‘Oh no.’ He’s the type of guy that can get hot.”

In the finals tiebreaker, Love made three of five shots from the top of line, including the bonus ball, and four of five shots from the right wing, including the bonus ball.

Durant started slow in the tiebreaker but had a chance to catch Love after making 4-for-5 from the top of line. However, Durant made just five of his final 10 attempts.

“I was just going out there and enjoying myself, having fun with guys sitting courtside,” Love said.

In the evolution of Love’s game, he has improved his three-point shooting, adding to his strong low-post scoring and rebounding. Love made 35 of 106 three-pointers (33%) his second season, 88 of 21 (41.7%) last season and is 49 of 141 (36.5%) this season.

“To be where I am now and continue to work on my game, I think this definitely speaks to my versatility,” Love said.

The Shooting Stars event requires each team to make shots from six different spots on the court: three mid-range jumpers, two three-pointers (one from the top, one from the wing) and one from halfcourt. The team that makes those six shots the fastest wins.

New York’s defeated the Texas team — Houston Rockets forward Chandler Parsons, ex-Houston guard Kenny Smith and San Antonio Silver Stars forward Sophia Young— making their six shots in 37.3 seconds to Texas’ 47.6 seconds.

New York needed just six attempts to make its first five shots. Houston, now the Knicks’ assistant general manager, made New York’s sixth shot from halfcourt for the .

“I have to say we have been practicing a little,” Houston said.
