Stars Talk Triumphs at XBIZ Awards

— Andy San Dimas fought back tears of joy. Tommy Gunn stood speechless. So many XBIZ Award winners displayed a range of emotions on Wednesday night backstage at the Hollywood Palladium after their names were announced.

“This is so amazing,” San Dimas said. “I can’t believe I won Female Performer of the Year.”

San Dimas’ outstanding body of work included lead roles in several high-profile feature movies as well as some 30 gonzo releases in 2010, capping a memorable year for the former adult store clerk from Baltimore, Md.

Gunn, who is in his eighth year as one of porn’s most reliable studs, was humbled by his win for Male Performer of the Year.

“I’m just happy to be doing what I do,” Gunn said. “I just showed up and did my best. I’m kind of speechless to be honest, but this is a great day.”

Winners were crowned in more than 100 award categories covering every major sector of adult at Wednesday’s event. The ninth annual gala was the largest in XBIZ Awards history.

After the star-studded parade of red-carpet arrivals generated national media coverage, the show unfolded in front of a crowd of more than 1,000 adult industry professionals at the iconic Palladium. Digital Playground exclusive Jesse Jane and naughty comedian Whitney Cummings kept the mood lively as the hosts for the evening in between live entertainment that even included professional pole dancing.

But perhaps the most lasting images of the night were the looks on the faces of the victors, such as the Best Acting winners Kayden Kross and Keni Styles, who both told XBIZ that careful preparation went into their performances.

Kross won Acting Performance of the Year-Female for her lead role in Digital Playground’s firefighter epic “Body Heat.”

“This is so rad. I’m so excited. This is freakin’ sweet!” Kross said, adding “my feet hurt!”

“‘Body Heat’ was the one movie I really cried for — real tears — so I think that says something,” she continued. “I worked with an acting coach with this specific script. I didn’t feel like I was doing porn, I felt like I was playing a role.”

The Asian sensation Styles was ecstatic with his triumph for Acting Performance of the Year in the Miss Lucifer Production “Malice in Lalaland” that was distributed by Vivid.

“I wish [director Lewis Xypher] could have been here,” Styles said. “I put a lot of work into researching Johnny Depp’s character in ‘Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas.’ I watched the movie again and again, trying to get down his characteristics. A lot of people just said it came naturally to me. I put myself into the role. And I’m already a zany character.”

Styles continued, “Working with [Sasha Grey] was really good. She helped me raise my game so much. I learned a lot from Sasha. … Lewis just had his first son and he is celebrating that [in Belgium]. When I call him up on Skype later this will be the cherry on top of the cake for him.”

The night was just as sweet for Wicked Pictures, which took Feature Movie of the Year and Best Cinematography for their all-action, motorcycle drama “Speed,” in addition to Feature Studio of the Year honors. When “Speed” director Brad Armstrong & Co. took the stage, he said, “Thanks to the Wicked Girls, to my editor Scott Allen, to my videographers Francois Clousot and Mark Nicholson and to all the people who worked so hard on the cast and crew.”

Armstrong directed what will be remembered as one of the finest ensemble casts in adult history in “Speed,” which was lifted by the acting and sex performances of numerous established stars who each had equal screen time and billing.

Director Lee , meanwhile, collected honors for Director of the Year – Body of Work and Parody Movie of the Year for his smash hit “The Big Lebowski: A XXX Parody.”

“I really love my job. I love directing, writing and producing, and the people I get to work with. I literally get to work with my best friends every day on my shoots. How can you beat that?” Myers said. “My crew made me. I’d be nothing without them.”

Myers added, “‘Lebowski’ is my baby. This project is based on my favorite movie. Everything just clicked on it, from the acting performances to the sex. I’m so glad it’s being recognized.”

Nominees traveled from all over the country to attend the XBIZ Awards.

“I literally just arrived [in L.A.],” said Gisele of GotGisele.com, who was named Web Babe of the Year and had just stepped off a plane from a couple hours earlier. “I was the first winner of the evening. I’m completely shocked. I was not at all expecting this.”

The former Hooters waitress started GotGisele.com 10 months ago after working for five years as a popular web cam model.

“I always had a fascination for nude modeling,” Gisele admitted.

R.J. from the Bay Area-based SexEntertain told XBIZ when he was on stage accepting the Content Licensor of the Year award, he thought simply, “I’m glad I dressed nicely.”

“I’m appreciative,” R.J. said. “I’m glad and I’m honored. … We are the largest and longest lasting content syndicator on the market.”

IVD/ECN founder Frank Kay, who traveled from his headquarters in Hightstown, N.J., thanked all his vendors for contributing to his company’s award for Distributor/Wholesaler of the Year.

“I’m very happy to win a great award like this,” Kay said. “We couldn’t accomplish this without all our staff and vendor support.”

Shap, the owner of Twistys.com, will bring a trophy home to Toronto after accepting the award for Solo Girl Affiliate Program of the Year for TwistysCash.

“This is awesome, a lot of hard work,” Shap said. “This is our first award as an affiliate program, and our second award overall. We pour our hearts into this. We’ll have our 10-year anniversary in 2011.”

Nicholas Steele, the director of ambitious parody “Bat FXXX: Dark Night” for Bluebird Films, was accompanied by “Bat FXXX” star and Bluebird exclusive, Madelyn Marie, in accepting his Best Director – Individual Project honor.

“Twenty years later, this is the first time I’ve won an award,” Steele said. “And this is my first digital movie.”

“Bat FXXX” later was awarded Best Special Effects for its cinematic quality.

Meanwhile, Chanel Preston, a native of Alaska who resides in Hawaii, completed a fantastic first year of performing by earning the coveted New Starlet of the Year award.

“When I look back I feel so lucky that I’ve had an extremely successful year,” Preston told XBIZ, adding that she’ll be going to the Magic Mountain amusement park to celebrate the victory. She gave a special “thank you” to Wicked Pictures and Brad Armstrong and Jessica Drake who “shot my third scene” and “really helped me a lot.”

Erik Teno and Cathy Beardsley of CommerceGate won for Billing Company of the Year – Merchant Services, a company is based in L.A., Miami and Barcelona.

“This was a big surprise,” Teno said.

Beardsley added, “Our whole focus is taking care of our clients. Customer service is No. 1. We’re listening to our clients and we’re adapting.”

Justin Ross from the Screaming O recalled how six years ago he and Keith Caggiano started their company out of a garage and guesthouse, and now they run a 20,000 square-foot facility. For their mainstream friendly marketing endeavors they earned the award for Crossover Novelty Company of the Year.

“We have a product that is unique and able to cross over to different areas where others aren’t. It takes a lot of energy and effort,” said Ross, a former finance executive. “We knew if we executed our strategy right we would grow and we have even bigger plans than where we are now.”

Speaking of crossovers, Digital Playground’s Riley Steele said her win for Crossover Star of the Year means that “all my hard work is paying off right now.”

“And with ‘Top Guns’ and everything that’s coming this year I feel it just gets better from here,” said the blonde native, who had a memorable role in the feature film Piranha 3-D last summer and will star in a new season of Cinemax’s “Life on Top” this year.

Burning Angel founder Joanna Angel, who won Specialty Affiliate Program of the Year for Joanna Angel Bucks, said her award was especially gratifying.

“I’m so honored. This really feels amazing. I don’t know what to say. I’m shocked. There are so many incredible affiliate programs out there and to know we stood out,” Angel said. “I do it all myself. This is the root of my company. I’d be nothing with Joanna Angel Bucks.”

Another standout was the 6-foot-6 Flash Brown, who won New Male Performer of the Year. Just a few years ago the Memphis, Tenn., native was playing professional overseas.

“I feel privileged. I’m very honored and grateful,” said the 29-year-old former shooting guard.

Dale DaBone, who starred in Axel Braun’s hot-selling “Batman XXX” for Vivid last year and most recently played Elvis, won the award for Comeback Performer of the Year after returning to the industry in 2010 after a seven-year hiatus.

“I’m proud of ‘Batman’ and all the other stuff I’ve done,” said DaBone, who did professional motorcycle stunts, coached and played drums while he was gone. “I told you about some of the mistakes I’ve made in the past and I’ve tried to make amends and it’s still going. Now I think ‘Elvis’ is going to be bigger than ‘Batman.’”

Sierra Sanchez Pleads Guilty to Single Prostitution Charge

03ebcf7b90c06b8994f2cec258843243 Sierra Sanchez Pleads Guilty to Single Prostitution Charge

The former porn perfomer, who appeared in only a handful of films, could face 18 months in jail.

—Sierra Sanchez, who performed in less than a handful of films circa 2009, pleaded guilty Monday in in Detroit to one count of persuading or enticing someone to engage in prostitution. The charges stem from her role working for the Companions escort service, according to prosecutors. Despite the guilty plea, Sanchez, whose real name is Nayubet Swaso, could receive 18 months in jail.

“Her plea deal will be filed under seal and it is unclear whether she has agreed to cooperate against Miami Companions co-owner Greg Carr,” reported the The Detroit News. “Labeled by prosecutors as the escort service’s mastermind, Carr is scheduled to stand trial in March.”

The paper further reported that in July 2008 Swazo, who is the third defendant in the ongoing Miami Companions case to reach a plea deal, persuaded or enticed a named ‘Stephanie’ to travel to Metro Detroit to engage in prostitution.

“Swaso also was named in an indictment as meeting clients at a Southfield hotel in March 2009,” it was reported. “Swaso cooperated, providing investigators critical details about the ring’s internal operations and payments, according to federal court records.”

Miami Companions was taken down last July by the and U.S. Attorney’s Office, which called it one of the largest escort services in the country. Based in Miami, the ring allegedly sent prostitutes to hotels and beachfront villas around the world. Detroit, according to prosecutors, was one of its busiest destinations in the States.

Swaso, who was dressed conservatively, took a conciliatory tone before Judge Arthur Tarnow. “I’ve understood what I’ve done is wrong and I believe in the last few months I’ve assumed responsibility in this case and for exactly what my actions were,” Swaso told the court.

According to the Detroit Free Press, however, Swaso may have been soliciting clients as recently as last week while out on bail. The ads reportedly appeared online on an adult site, featuring “salacious” photos of Swaso, with text that read, “If it is a sexy Exotic girl next door you want with a passionate and sensual attitude than look no further. I am a sweet, petite, down-to-earth girl who really knows how to have a good time.”

Swaso’s attorney, David Nacht, acknowledged the existence of the ad but said Swaso was “taking steps to get it taken down.” He added, “I think it’s very difficult to get out of a lifestyle. It’s hard to change who you are.” He said his client is “a one-time honor student who grew up in North Carolina and was abandoned by her adoptive parents as a teen in Panama.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Blackwell declined to comment about whether Swaso violated any bond conditions by posting the ad.

Judge Tarnow, who will sentence Swaso April 27, told her Monday, “I have no idea what my sentencing is going to be because I don’t know a lot about you.”

Do Open Relationships Work?

fca163a6d7aa1b63c073c5a5fdc32043 Do Open Relationships Work?

Some couples are agreeing to open their marriages to other sexual partners. We know the “benefits.” But what are the costs?

Admit it. You her, you really do, but sometimes you’d like some . . . variety. Perhaps a different body type. Or maybe you’d like to see or hear how someone else responds to your moves. It’s tough to suppress that natural “hunter” instinct. You’re not the only one playing video games well into the night to get that chick at the office out of your head. With about 50% of marriages ending in divorce, many reporting infidelity as the reason, some couples are challenging the boundaries of traditional relationships in order to keep the spark.

Call them cheaters, swingers, or “whatever couples”—the bottom line is these couples buck monogamy for a more open approach to their relationship. with another person is allowed, but it’s not flaunted or discussed outside the household. Their openness isn’t a license to bed everything in sight—respect and discretion rule. Those who’ve tried it say it isn’t always easy. But what if you could actually make it work?

THE OF MONOGAMY
“There are a wide variety of open-relationship models out there, and they can vary drastically from one couple to another,” says David Barash, Ph.D., professor of psychology at the University of and co-author of The Myth of Monogamy. “Having an open relationship can work really well for some people,” he says. “However, as people, we’re also inclined to be sexually jealous of a partner being with someone else, and from a biological standpoint, we’re resistant to that partner having another relationship.”

“Usually, you see open relationships in one of two situations,” says relationship expert and nationally syndicated Radio Chick Leslie Gold. “There are the kind people engage in because their partner is a rock star or a politician and they’re getting something else out of the situation, like status. And then the other category is when it’s just a person who likes to have sex with a lot of other individuals. Both types of relationships can survive, but you have a lot of minefields to overcome to make it happen.”

Philip Gale*, a 28-year-old agent who lives in , learned that the hard way. He knew his girlfriend, Elizabeth*, wasn’t faithful, but he came to terms with it—or so he thought—because she always brought home girls for him. “It was a lot of fun. I never had a relationship like that, but then it started to get to me,” he says. “My pride couldn’t take her seriously. I didn’t like that she wanted to share me.” Although they still hook up every now and then (extra girl included), Philip and Elizabeth are no longer together. Others, however, have actually made the “whatever” concept work. Here are their tales:

FREEDOM TO HUNT
Rapper Pitbull, 26, takes an extremely different approach to his relationship of nine years compared with that of other guys in hip-hop. The Cuban artist lives by the words Ojos que no ven, corazon que no siente, which loosely translates to “What the eyes don’t see, the heart doesn’t feel,” he says. “I’m not going to be worried about what she does when I’m not around. I think men are more bitches than . They let their ego and insecurities come into play.”

Obviously, that means he gets to do whatever, too. In fact, the problem comes more from when her friends call her when they see Pitbull out with other girls. “She’s always like, ‘Yeah, I know, he told me.’ Other people’s bullshit doesn’t affect us. We talk about everything,” he says.

Most of Pitbull’s friends in Miami aren’t as open, and they think he’s a bit nuts. “At the same time, they’ll be like, ‘Damn, I wish I had a relationship like yours,’” he says. Guys like the idea of freedom for themselves, but the thought of their girl doing the same is too much to handle. “Men have to under- stand that women are loyal,” he says, perhaps naively. “If she gets something she likes, she’ll stick with it.”

“People are stuck on what’s normal, what’s right, what’s wrong,” Pitbull adds. “Well, maybe what’s right to you is wrong to me. A couple from Kansas probably can’t even begin to imagine the kind of stuff I’ve done or the type of relationship I have. What counts at the end of the day is everybody being happy.”

DON’T ASK, DON’T TELL
Once upon a time, if you lived in a small town, your options for the opposite sex were limited. You picked the hottest girl at your high school (or at least the hottest one you could get), married her, and enjoyed your small-town life. Jake Scott*, 26, an investment banker originally from Virginia Beach, started getting into trouble the moment he moved to New York City. “My high school sweet- heart followed me to college, so it wasn’t hard to stay faithful there,” he says. “Moving to the big city and traveling the world for work was another story.”

Although they married shortly after graduation from Pamplin College of Business at Virginia Tech, he started cheating on her within months. When his wife was pregnant with their first child, he stopped, but he resumed three months after she gave birth to their son. “I felt so bad, but I started to feel like I had made a mistake getting married so young,” Jake says. “It sounds like a complete cop-out, but I felt I wouldn’t be happy if I didn’t have the freedom to experiment.”

Although Jake simply figured this phase would pass and he’d eventually stop “experimenting,” he didn’t realize his wife was doing the same thing. That changed the day he spotted an unused condom in her purse. Instead of being mad, he was relieved. “I can’t explain why I didn’t flip out. I guess my own guilt forced me to deal with it logically,” he says.

That night they had a long, frank conversation about their relationship. Neither wanted to end it, but both agreed their desire to experiment with others wasn’t something they were ready to abandon just yet. “It was painful,” says Karen*, “but the fact that we could be so honest with each other, I think, made our love stronger.” Full disclosure allowed them to clear the quiet tension that had been building between them. They now have an understanding but don’t discuss the details.

“It’s funny, but I don’t cheat as much as I used to,” says Jake, “and I look at things differently. Before, I’d often wonder if I’d be happier with one of these other women. Now, I know they can’t come close to what I already have.”

INDECENT PROPOSAL
Kevin johnson* always knew he’d marry a “good girl.” He wasn’t looking for a virgin, but he wanted someone who’d only been with a couple of guys. “A whole bunch of dudes who could say they’d had my wife? That wasn’t going to happen,” he says.

In the meantime, the 30-year-old executive from Atlanta did his thing with countless women. “They say the ratio of girls to men down here is like 9-to-1, and I took full advantage. Sometimes more than one girl at a time,” he says, laughing. Always believing he would stop once he met the right girl, he never considered he might miss this carefree lifestyle. “I thought being a horny dog would get it out of my system, making it easier to be faithful once I got married.”

He met his wife, Lisa,* in church, of all places, after his sister dragged him there one Sunday. “She was sick of hearing all my crazy stories and wanted me to settle down and have some kids so she could be an auntie,” says Kevin. He says it was love at first sight, and within six months he and Lisa were engaged. They married six months later.

Lisa, then a 23-year-old receptionist, had had only one prior sexual partner—just as Kevin had envisioned. “I loved that she was so beautiful and wholesome. She was everything I dreamed of,” he says. Except her inexperience showed—she wasn’t exactly an expert in the bedroom. Kevin tried teaching her, but it was di?cult and awkward, and it just made her uncomfortable. “She couldn’t let go,” he says. “Deprogramming a good girl was harder than I thought.”

Determined not to give up, he wondered if she’d be down to allow other women in their bed to show her. “Man, I know it sounds crazy, but she was so worried I was going to leave her—even saying things like she wouldn’t be surprised if I cheated on her, given my player background,” says Kevin. “It was almost like she was giving me permission since she didn’t think she could please me.”

He brought up the idea carefully, stressing that he didn’t want to exclude her from his sex life and that he would never leave her. By this time, he also realized that giving up the occasional me?nage a? trois was easier said than done. “She listened, was quiet for what seemed like a long time, but then she said yes,” says Kevin.

“I was a little hurt, but he was so sincere; I felt a responsibility to my husband to at least try,” says Lisa, who admits her willingness surprised her. “The rules were clearly drawn. The girls knew I was the queen, the one he had chosen, so they couldn’t compete with me on that. And the way my husband controlled the situation, I felt very empowered, like I was directing the whole thing.” She says she felt comfortable learning from the different women and actually enjoyed watching them please her husband. “Seeing firsthand how other women experience their sexuality has freed me from my hang-ups,” says Lisa.

Now that he’s created a freak, does Kevin worry she might try out her new moves with someone else? “I’m really hoping she doesn’t, but what can I do if she wants to? She’s handled my issues like a trooper,” he says. “I’m gonna have to do the same.”

CAN IT ALL BE SO SIMPLE?
Clearly, being a “whatever couple” is not for everyone. such an unconventional lifestyle can make the already difficult challenge of maintaining a relationship even more complicated—even when it “works.” “Sometimes I struggle and think it’s wrong to give in to temptation, but I think it’s worse to destroy your ,” says Kevin. “I’m living the fairy-tale marriage because I know me and Lisa are gonna live happily ever after. We’re committed to each other, and, c’mon, what’s more important than that?”

“The key to an open relationship working is that both people really have to want it,” says Barash. “Don’t push for one if your relationship isn’t working. You really have to have both partners in agreement. If not, it’s a recipe for complete disaster.”

But, according to Gold, if you’re someone who thinks you can make it work, and you’re a like-minded individual, it just might be successful. “As long as there are ground rules laid out and you adhere to them, and you’re with the right kind of person, those relationships can survive,” she says. “I think people are willing to be in a lot more different models of relationships than they used to be. The one-size-fits-all, let’s-get-married-and- never-bang-anyone-else-ever-again thing doesn’t fit everyone anymore.” In fact, some would say it never did.

Corbin Fisher Goes After Hotfile, 1,000 File Traders

4d5e7e2be654c3e1dfce866868529ced Corbin Fisher Goes After Hotfile, 1,000 File Traders

— Corbin Fisher says file-trading site Hotfile.com and about 1,000 of its customers have engaged in massive by making available 2,400 links to the gay studio’s titles.

Corbin Fisher attorneys contend that Hotfile, which charges a membership fee of up to $55 per year, has at least 800 of its films available on its servers traded by a “confederation of thieves.” That number could get bumped up during rounds of discovery, Corbin Fisher attorneys say in the claim.

The hones in on Hotfile.com’s self-described “one-click hosting” site, which doesn’t provide an index of content and “represents an emerging model for stealing — and profiting from — others’ intellectual property.”

The suit also makes charges that Hotfile operates its own affiliate system so that users recruit others to download files, breeding a “massive pyramid” where “veteran infringers recruit new infringers, while all infringers attract recruits to download the pirated intellectual property from which they receive a payment.”

“Hotfile.com cleverly avoids cataloging or indexing the files in order to be willfully blind to their users’ uploads and downloads, while profiting from the site’s web traffic,” said the suit, which also names Hotfile’s operator, Anton Titov, and its web-hosting services company, Lemuria Communications Inc., purportedly owned by Titov.

The suit also names PayPal, which provides payments to Hotfile Inc.

Titov, according to the suit, is believed to be a Russian citizen who resides in Bulgaria and , as well as Miami Beach.

The suit charges copyright infringement and civil conspiracy against Hotfile, Titov, Lemuria, Paypal and the 1,000 unnamed Hotfile customers, who were named as John Does to the suit.

Filed at in Miami, the suit seeks an injunction and damages against the defendants, as well as to freeze assets in Hotfile’s Paypal account.

Corbin Fisher attorney Marc Randazza declined comment on the suit to XBIZ; Titov was not immediately available at post time.

Jobless couples manage to find holiday spirit

7f326ee73a64177990d198cb9c141742 Jobless couples manage to find holiday spirit

and Salena Smith and their two toddlers had an awesome Christmas last year.

Two good jobs, a sweet house in a new Southern California suburb, and bright dreams for 2010 made it so. He strung lights on the roof. On the front lawn, he stood wooden soldiers that he had made. She made a festive meal, including honey-baked ham and pumpkin pie.

This year, it’s nearly all gone.

The Smiths are among nearly 300,000 married couples across the nation who both used to have jobs, but now are unemployed. That’s almost four times as many unemployed couples as there were in 2007, just before the recession hit, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Now, both Smiths, jobless since June, live in space carved out of her parent’s garage in Whittier, Calif. It’s 40 miles from their former in Fontana, a place they’ve been trying to sell since late spring, when they stopped paying the mortgage.

“It was food or gas or the mortgage,” Salena recalls.

Now, the toys under the tree for Isabella, 4, and Nathanial, 2, were donated by the Whittier Area Community Church. The church, which they joined in June, also runs the ministry where they pick up donated food on Fridays.

HELP NEEDED: Group reports rising need for food assistance
TAX BREAK: Business spending, hiring may increase
JOB CENTER: USA TODAY’s employment news and search

The number of jobless couples isn’t likely to decline dramatically anytime soon, Bureau of Labor Statistics economist Steve Hipple says.

That could be grim news for the Smiths and for Chris and Alexis Rago of Chicago, now expecting their second . This is the second holiday season in which the Ragos have both been out of work.

Their hardships are clear, their challenges daunting. Yet this holiday season, both families are trying not to think about foreclosed dreams, dashed credit ratings or diminished gift offerings for themselves and their kids.

Instead, they’re focusing on the meaning of the holidays. They stand on all they have not lost — faith, and charity. They lean on each other and reach out to help others. And they don’t look back. They say they’re out of work, not out of spirit.

“You would think this could be our worst Christmas ever, but it’s not,” says Salena Smith, 29. “We are really experiencing the spirit of love and generosity from and friends and our church. That’s really what Christmas is all about. It’s not lost on us.

“I grew up poor. But my family taught me you don’t give up. You just have a fighting spirit. You work and you pray and blessings will come,” says Salena, a college graduate who originally planned to teach.

‘There will be another house’

Salena and Brian met when both were working their way through school as ride operators at Disneyland. They were married in July 2004.

“After we got married, my priority was to start a family. I never went back to get my (teaching) credentials,” Salena says.

She was happy as a teaching assistant in junior high schools, but her $1,000 to $1,500 a month earnings were disrupted by time off when the kids were born. By 2009, full-time assistant jobs vanished. Salena switched to substitute teaching, earning up to $165 a day, when the calls came. They rarely come now.

Brian, 29, had loved the work at Disneyland. But $9 per hour wasn’t enough income for a family man he so switched to the elevator trade, starting out at $20 an hour and rising to $50 an hour as a mechanic specializing in elevator construction.

When the California economy nosedived, Brian saw layoffs coming. They began preparing for the worst.

In May, the Smiths stuffed their possessions — furniture to Christmas decor — in their garage in Fontana, the house they had bought for $420,000 for in 2005, using the proceeds from their first home as a down payment and relying mostly on Brian’s income, $60,000 a year at the time.

After the housing market dived, they listed it for sale at $195,000 and moved in with to Salena’s parents.

In June, Brian’s boss met him on the job and gave him his last check. His union benefits now cover their health .

“A part of us was a little heartbroken that we had to leave our house,” Brian recalls.

“We did a lot of upgrades. Our kids came there. We had great Christmases there. We keep telling ourselves, ‘Hey, we are Christians. We can’t be attached to the things of this world.’ It was a great house, but there will be another house later in our lives.”

Today, his $450-a-week unemployment check and her sporadic income goes quickly for food and clothes for the children, utilities, a car payment and gas. The Smiths are still paying $150 a month to keep the lights and water on at the Fontana house. A potential buyer is trying to close a deal with them, and they hope the house will be sold in January.

“I’d definitely go back to elevator work if they called,” Brian says. “But right now there are a lot of people in the trade out of work. No one is really hiring at all.”

Yet he’s constantly preparing for the day someone will. He spent $120 to earn a license to operate forklifts. The couple both earned licenses to teach cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. When no offers came to teach paid CPR classes, they began volunteering with the Red Cross. Sundays, he volunteers guiding cars in the megachurch’s parking lot.

The plan for January is to cash out all they have in Brian’s retirement fund, $26,000. They intend to use the $18,000 after taxes to knock off her car payment, their bills and cover a course to train and license Brian to drive hazardous waste trucks.

Salena confidently foresees the day there’s money in the bank once more. “I don’t have a doubt that we will fail to pull through,” she says. “The Bible says God even provides for the birds of the fields. Why wouldn’t God provide for us?”

Until then, her parents babysit while he knocks on doors, giving out flyers promoting his services as a handyman or scours the Internet for job opportunities.

They scraped aside a few dollars every week so they could stay Christmas Eve at a Motel 6 in Big Bear, up in the mountains nearby, to relax and celebrate the holiday. The kids love to play in the snow, Salena says. And she may sing her favorite holiday song, a jazzy arrangement of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.

A series of blows

The Rago family finds a brief spiritual respite every Friday evening from the exhausting stress of job-hunting. This is Sabbath for the couple (Alexis is Jewish; Chris is Christian). This is when they pause to recall “how lucky we are,” says Alexis, 36.

As young professionals, the Ragos moved among cities and among jobs in marketing, brand management, and event planning — jobs that often seemed to collapse upon their arrival. The last home they owned, purchased when the economy looked so good in 2005, was a $350,000 condo in the hip South Beach area of Beach.

That’s where they lived when they married, when she was in digital marketing, he was promoting resorts with an ad agency, and their son, , now 2, was born.

And that’s where they were driven out by a series of blows. She lost her job, three hurricanes swept through, the insurance and fees on their condo skyrocketed.

Chris Rago, 42, calmly describes how the couple “bought in the housing bubble, and it popped in our faces.”

Next week they expect to finish the paperwork ceding the condo back to the bank — and leaving his credit rating in tatters. The Ragos decided to return to Chicago where they had once lived, closer to her parents’ emotional support and babysitting help, and, they hoped, a better job market.

It was, at first. Alexis landed a $107,000-a-year job doing marketing strategy for a digital agency in 2009. They sold their 15- and 18-year-old cars and accepted the gift of a 1999 Volvo from her parents.

Chris left his Miami job to begin the still-fruitless search for work in advertising and marketing. Then, in November 2009, Alexis was laid off.

As the 2010 holidays arrive, Chris says, “We never imagined there would be two holiday seasons in a row without work.”

To celebrate their holidays, Chris nabbed a deeply discounted coupon for a spa massage for Alexis during Hanukkah. He asked that there be no Christmas gift for him. They splurged on a toy train layout (half-price at $80) for Charlie.

They staggered through 2010 with her $550-a-week unemployment payments in fits and starts. Each time she landed a short-term paying project, she’d have to drop the unemployment benefits, then reapply when the project finished. He worked for several months as a Census taker. Today, Alexis and Chris will wrap up several weeks of work organizing Santa photos at airports. Then what?

Chris forecasts boldly, “We’ve been successful in the past and we will be again.” Alexis’ bravado briefly wavers — their baby is due in June, just days before the health insurance left from her last full-time job runs out. But her mood quickly revives.

“We keep it in perspective,” she says. “We are healthy. We have a roof over our heads. We may struggle month to month, but when push comes to shove, we’re still lucky.”

Sammy Davis, Jr.: Style Icon

aa36a1192c7eb0677f5d9cfef6c4957d Sammy Davis, Jr.: Style Icon

Whether you’re slight like Sammy or on the heftier side of the scale, finding clothes that fit is key.”

* Style Icon in brief …
* Sammy Davis, Jr. was the first black person to grace the cover of GQ in September 1967.
* Sammy knew his proportions and they were no match for his impeccable taste.
* Finding clothes that fit is key to looking good.

Why He’s A Style Icon
Like much of black history, phenoms from the African-American community tend to get swept under the rug. Sure, we’ve given credit to current-day rappers and rock stars, but that just scratches the surface of the story. We’re talking about the unsung style heroes that are every bit as worthy of the glory garnered by the Astaires and Eastwoods of the world.

But among the slew of black style icons that have gone unnoticed (trust — there are many), one rises above the rest. Sammy Davis, Jr. — Rat Pack participant and all-around entertainer extraordinaire — was the first black person to grace the cover of GQ in September 1967. It was here where Sammy cemented his commitment to civil rights, while clad in a slim-lined, double-breasted check complete with matching overcoat. At the height of the movement, along with his Rat Pack crew, he refused to work at segregated venues, which ultimately led to the integration of nightclub hotspots like Las Vegas and Beach.

The irreverence Sammy showed for the social norms of the day is subtly voiced by his sense of style. Two-button sharkskin suits with narrow lapels and equally trim ties typical of ‘50s fashion, and indeed the entire Rat Pack, was his look of choice onstage. But in more humble surroundings, like his Harlem , there was a casual coolness in the air: button-down Oxfords, V-neck sweaters, Harrington jackets, and trousers tailored to the hilt. Sammy knew his proportions — a critical point of care for a who stood just 5’3” — and they were no match for his impeccable taste and immeasurable self-assurance.

Dress The Davis Way
Capturing Sammy’s suaveness boils down to knowing your body. Whether you’re slight like Sammy or on the heftier side of the scale, finding clothes that fit is key. But while slimmer cuts are always the way to go regardless of your size, Sammy understood that this wasn’t to be taken to the extreme. His pants were never restrictive. They were simply trimmer and tapered to accentuate a long, lean line from hip to hem. At times, his jackets were even cropped to lengthen his lower half. But every piece, such as this McQ Double-Breasted Jacket, always left room for movement — an important feature for a man who was known to break into spontaneous dance and a lesson for any guy who wears that’s too tight.

2010 ushered in a frenzy of 3D TVs and the use of the technology in mainstream films making the transition into adult both as pioneering technology and a way to bolster lagging DVD sales. Productions have sprung up around the world including “firsts” from Italian director Tinto Brass, Hong Kong producers and of course domestically from studios Hustler, Vivid, New Sensations, Digital Playground that created a virtual 3D world on the web and Smash Pictures’ new 3D logos. On a more positive note, the expo and adult marketer D-Money’s Marketing Firm partnered to create new sponsorship packages to attract Internet companies.

ADULT DVD EMPIRE
The online retail giant removed the restrictions and licensing processes that come with downloading videos online in 2010 that made its site more user-friendly. It also removed the download-to-own restrictions on its video partner studios’ entire catalogs of movies. The company also debuted its own “AdultEmpire” VOD-only site with a ‘search within results’ search box that lets users drill deep into lists for exact results. Parent company Right Ascension was fined $78,000 and put on two years’ probation after pleading guilty to mailing four “obscene” videos to an Erie, Pennsylvania address.

ADULT FRIENDFINDER
Parent company of Penthouse magazine and mega-dating site AdultFriendFinder, Friendfinder Network made the news this year indefinitely pulling its own $240 million IPO plans citing poor market conditions. In July it made a $210 million bid for Playboy that was initially rejected and recently received $551 million capital infusion to embark on what CEO Marc Bell calls “three big initiatives.” In September, a California appeals court ruled that FriendFinder Network couldn’t compel Epic Cash (a competitor) to arbitrate its claims over litigation involving Zango’s pop-up advertising. The suit stems from a long-running battle over Internet marketing and the alleged FFN conversion of Zango pop-up ads and traffic to benefit its business.

ADULT TALENT MANAGERS
Adult Talent Managers and A-List Talent Management announced a merger that made it one of the largest talent agencies in adult entertainment. Adult Talent Managers owner Shy Love, who is also a performer and director, has nearly 10 years experience in the adult, while A-List owner September Dawn entered the business in 1994 and soon established herself as the go-to wardrobe stylist for numerous top producers. AIDS HEALTHCARE FOUNDATION
The Los Angeles-based proponents of mandatory condom use in XXX productions and legislation to protect adult movie performers made headlines by launching legal complaints with local health departments in Miami and Los Angeles this year. Citing the safety concerns of adult film workers, the organization’s president Michael Weinstein targeted Hustler for producing 100 condom-less films and mounted a public protest against the company. An HIV scare in October also prompted the AHF to ask the L.A. City Council to stop adult productions in the city.

AMY FISHER
The notorious tabloid star became a professional porn star in 2010, signing an exclusive two-year deal with Dreamzone Entertainment. The agreement called for the New York native to star in eight hardcore movies over the next two years. She made her official debut in “Deep Inside Amy Fisher,” which was released in October.

ANDROID
Google’s Android smartphone made a significant run at the Apple iPhone market in 2010 fueled primarily by its features, apps and buying options. And it’s “porn friendly” app development posture made it a welcome alternative to Apple’s no porn policy. In fact, even Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak said he believes the product will dominate the global smartphone market.

APPLE
The computer giant launched the iPhone4 and iPad tablet, both of which stirred the porn pot for adult producers. But despite early attempts to capitalize on the popular iPhone platform, Apple quickly pulled the plug on all adult apps last April when CEO Steve Jobs made it clear to concerned customers that there would be no porn apps developed for the device. Although porn apps were forbidden, video chat found its way onto the iPhone4 and a number of adult companies have developed iPad-compatible websites that fit well with its large format screen and high resolution.

ASACP CEO Joan Irvine also announced the promotion of Tim Henning to vice president of technology and forensic research.

ASHLYNN BROOKE
The Oklahoma native and former New Sensations contract girl continued her transition behind the camera, inspiring Mile High Media to launch a new Hardcore Parody studio to showcase her promising directorial efforts. She kicked off the studio’s creation with the release of “Red Riding Hood” starring Lexi Belle and followed that up with directing Tori Black in a parody of “Wonder Woman.” “She’s actually an amazing director,” Mile High VP Jon Blitt said. “She’s very conscientious.”

AXEL BRAUN

Baci Lingerie officially launched during April’s International Lingerie Show in Las Vegas where the company flaunted its new collection with over-the-top marketing that included dominating the show with promotional videos, posters, giveaways and a massive booth. CP Productions Inc., First Time Videos and Future Blue Inc. German porn producer Mick Haig Productions has filed suit against 670 pirates.

BLUEBIRD FILMS
Bluebird was one of the talks of the town all year, sparing no expense on two of the biggest budget movies in adult history — “Bat FXXX: Dark Night” and “Bonny & Clide.” Just “Bat FXXX” alone was an incredible achievement in special effects and stunt coordination for an adult movie. One of the questions for 2011 is what will Bluebird owner/producer/actor Paul Chaplin and CEO/director Nicholas Steele do for an encore?

BOBBIE EDEN

Boxee already had Pink Visual and Bang Bros on board and is banking on more adult companies signing on to access the company’s network of more than 800,000 users. Boxee CEO Avner Ronan said the new platform is just one more way for the Internet to compete against traditional distribution models. “The Internet represents a great opportunity for the major media companies and for the independent content producers to create more engaging and immersive experiences around their content and for them to be paid for more eyeballs on yet another screen. Although a federal judge denied the group’s motion to reconsider a previous decision, which threw out FSC’s 18 U.S.C. §§2257 and 2257A lawsuit against the federal , it vowed to appeal the move. On a more positive note, the FSC’s Anti-Piracy Action Program (APAP) spawned a widely viewed PSA video and showed significant promise documenting about 287 million views on 1,700 tube-site videos identified with its spidering software. All told, 18 adult production companies participating in APAP have fingerprinted more than 5,000 titles with the software to track content and gather data from infringing tube sites in its first three months. The group continued its opposition of the .XXX sTLD and has challenged the ICM Registry’s bid for ICANN’s acceptance of .XXX. The FSC also continued to lobby against mandatory condom use at Cal/OSHA meetings on behalf of the adult industry and opposed the AIDS Healthcare Foundation’s (AHF) attempts to influence Cal/OSHA decisions concerning adult worker safety.

After completing testing for two generations of partners of the so-called Patient Zeta, AIM said that all performers tested negative for HIV on two occasions using multiple testing methods. ICM REGISTRY
At the center of the .XXX sTLD initiative and controversy (with some opposition from the adult industry) is Stuart Lawley, CEO of ICM Registry, the organization pushing for the adoption of .XXX as the domain designation of choice for the adult industry. Lawley petitioned the ICANN body this year with a registry contract after ICANN initially rejected .XXX. Lawley began selling the .XXX suffix in hopes that ICM would be the gatekeeper for the sTLD. Lawley also bought the DotXXX.com for $25,000 for advertising purposes, redirecting visitors to its official site, ICMRegistry.com. The ICM Registry also created the slogan, “Let’s Be Adult About It,” which will appear along with DotXXX.com in all future media campaigns. ICM also owns DotXXX.com, LetsBeAdultAboutIt.com and LetBeAdultAboutIt.com, all of which redirect to ICMRegistry.com as well. The ICM Registry’s contract is now out for approval. Fans love a good ol’ fashion pop culture and political parody, and no one knows that better than Jet Set. No stranger to controversy, Girls Gone Wild CEO Joe Francis was accused of attacking two of his female employees, one of whom is pregnant. He also went on the offensive, filing suit against a former employee — Ryan Simkin — who he claimed breached a non-disclosure agreement regarding a “tell-all” book deal. Company videographer John Jacobs completed his acquisition of gay content producer Drake Rock Media. “I have been directing and filming for the Drake Rock Media since the beginning,” Jacobs said. “This acquisition allows creative control over all aspects of the company, from booking and directly interacting with the talent, to editing and marketing the final product.”

Outside the courtroom, Stagliano, perhaps joking, said he was “disappointed. [The government] didn’t put up much of a fight. They were sloppy and not passionate and doing the prosecution for the wrong reasons.” He added, “And karma is important.”

Teens communicate with each other electronically more often than verbally. These communications are sometimes erotic, and that is human nature.”

Jimmy Flynt filed suit in Ohio, claiming among other things that he’s a partner in LFP and was instrumental in keeping the company afloat after Larry Flynt’s medical problems resulting from the 1978 assassination attempt. At that time Larry Flynt said his brother has no equity position or stock in the multimedia empire. The case was recently dismissed by the Ohio judge who said the proper venue for the court battle is California and not Ohio. Jimmy Flynt’s attorneys said they still believe Cincinnati is where the case should be litigated. “The fight will go on,” Jimmy Flynt’s attorney Robert Hojnoski said. “They’re partners now and they were partners then and we intend to prove that.”

Its copyright infringement battle with Ventura Content, parent of Pink Visual Productions, ended in a settlement in October. As part of the agreement, Manwin has agreed to implement — and is already testing — the copyright filtering software offered by Vobile Inc., on its various tube site properties. REALITY KINGS
One of the “kings” of online content production, Reality Kings had its share of legal problems in 2010. Most notably was the controversial DareDorm.com debacle it faced with Florida A&M University. The college filed a lawsuit after Reality Kings released its “BigRattler77″ hardcore production allegedly depicting that the sex took place in one of FAMU’s dorm rooms. Reality Kings said the movie did not use FAMU students or property but ultimately settled with the college paying $105,000 to fully fund two scholarships in addition to $15,000 in attorney fees. Parent company RK Netmedia also agreed to write an apology letter and added in the letter, “We are honored to provide scholarships to deserving students.” That wasn’t the only trouble for RK. Lawley also bought the domain name DotXXX.com for $25,000 for advertising purposes, redirecting visitors to its official site, ICMRegistry.com. The ICM Registry also created the slogan, “Let’s Be Adult About It,” which will appear along with DotXXX.com in all future media campaigns. Defending Eastern champion Boston Celtics feeling the Heat

84a1f7141dd9cc1bf256a6bb7e4c46f7 Defending Eastern champion Boston Celtics feeling the Heat

The Boston Celtics won the Eastern Conference last season, and they didn’t lose much from a team that took the Lakers to seven games in the NBA Finals.

But it’s the Heat, a 47-win team that the Celtics dispatched easily in the first round, who have stolen the headlines going into 2010-11.

“I get why a lot of attention is bestowed on Miami. I think they deserve that,” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said Thursday in a phone interview. “You can argue they had the best summer in NBA history.”

The nation gets a first glimpse Tuesday of the new-look Heat — with LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh— hosting the Pistons in a preseason opener on NBA TV at 7:30 p.m. ET.

This Heat team is the latest creation of President Pat Riley, who coached the Los Angeles Lakers’ “Showtime” dynasty in the 1980s and landed Shaquille O’Neal to help the Heat win their only championship, in 2006.

Riley lured James from the Cavaliers and Bosh from the Toronto Raptors as free agents this summer.

Chris Webber, an analyst who will be courtside for the Heat-Pistons matchup, doesn’t think there can be too much hype surrounding the union.

“You have an MVP candidate in Dwyane Wade teaming with LeBron and Bosh, who is one of the top two power forwards in the game. So, no,” Webber says. “Pat Riley orchestrated Showtime. He’s the originator. I don’t think you can talk about it too much. …

“I’m like a kid in a candy store. I can’t wait.”

It wasn’t a rosy departure from Cleveland for James. His manager, Maverick Carter, tells CNN that race played a factor in how the two-time MVP’s decision to leave the Cavs was covered.

After Thursday’s practice, James said, “Sometimes (race) does play a part in it. I’ve said what I had to say, and I’ll continue to move on.”

That perplexed Webber. “I don’t think I agree with that statement,” he says. “He has a lot of pressure because he’s the greatest athlete in the world … but it comes with the territory.”

Despite his excitement about what could happen with the Heat, Webber still thinks the Celtics are the favorite to win the East and the Lakers the West.

The Celtics return the core of their veteran team. Plus, they added two O’Neals, Shaquille and Jermaine, to fill the void inside left by Rasheed Wallace (retirement) and Kendrick Perkins (knee surgery, out until February).

Rivers doesn’t expect his team to look any different in terms of style, but the Celtics can’t afford to limp through the regular season again, conceding victories and hoping to turn it on for the playoffs.

They did that out of necessity because forwards Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce and guard Ray Allen had injuries, but the East has gotten significantly stronger with the Heat and Bulls (getting forward Carlos Boozer) in particular.

“It’s all going to be about playoff position. We can’t think we can do what we did last year and get away with it. It usually doesn’t work,” River says of a 50-win team that was a No. 4 seed in the postseason. “You could have two or three Game 7′s in the playoffs before you even get to the Finals in the East, so you need that -court advantage.”

Israel Strikes Deal With Porn Site Owner for Twitter Account

11f70fb6af20e6434679ac6e84056a35 Israel Strikes Deal With Porn Site Owner for Twitter Account

— A Spanish porn site owner has sold his account to the Israeli for an undisclosed amount.

Melendez opened his @ Twitter account in 2007 and said he didn’t think twice about sharing an online identity with an entire country.

But as Twitter grew in popularity, so did his Tweets. Melendez, who owns porn site Greenshines.com, said celebrities and politicians including Perez Hilton and Israeli began following his Tweets online.

In fact, he said he began getting about 20 mistaken messages a day.

“It was so flooded with messages from people who thought it belonged to the country that I couldn’t use it,” he said.

Then, the Israel Foreign Ministry actually reached out to him and asked for the online real estate, he decided to hand it over — for a price.

Melendez sold the account to the Israel Foreign Ministry in August, though he declined to say how much the country paid.

Some online reports said Melendez was paid up to six figures for the account, but Paul Hirschson, the Deputy Chief of Mission at Israel’s Miami Consulate, said it was in “the very, very low four figures.”

Melendez said he was contacted on Twitter through Prime Minister Netanyahu’s account, which is run by the relations firm Bewick Media.

“They sent me a private message from the Netanyahu Twitter account requesting information about the account and asking me if I was interested in selling it,” Melendez said.

Hirschson said only that Melendez was paid a “reasonable amount.”

Twitter, however, has a policy against username cybersquatting.

“Attempts to sell, buy, or solicit other forms of payment in exchange for usernames are also violations and may result in permanent account suspension,” the Twitter rules say.

But this transfer may be permissible because Melendez appears to have created the the account for his personal use and not for profit.

Hirschson said he was not aware of Twitter’s policy and Melendez said, “They paid me for relinquishing the account, not for selling it.”
