NEW YORK (AP) — R.A. Dickey languished in the minors for 14 years, bouncing from one team to another before finally perfecting that perplexing that made him a major league star.

was the top pick in the draft and an ace by age 25, throwing 98 mph heat with a left arm live enough to make the most hardened scout sing.

Raised only 34 miles apart in central Tennessee, Dickey and Price won ’s awards on Wednesday — one by a wide margin, the other in a tight vote.

Two paths to the pantheon of pitching have rarely been more different.

“Isn’t that awesome?” said Dickey, the first knuckleballer to win a . “It just shows you there’s not just one way to do it, and it gives hope to a lot of people.”

Dickey said he jumped up and yelled in excitement, scaring one of his kids, when he saw on television that Price edged Justin Verlander for the American League prize. Both winners are represented by Bo McKinnis, who watched the announcements with Dickey at his home in Nashville, Tenn.

“I guess we can call him Cy agent now,” Price quipped on a conference call.

The hard-throwing lefty barely beat out Verlander in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America, preventing the ’ ace from winning consecutive .

Runner-up two years ago, Price was the pick this time. He received 14 of 28 first-place votes and finished with 153 points to 149 for Verlander, chosen first on 13 ballots.

“It means a lot,” Price said. “It’s something that I’ll always have. It’s something that they can’t take away from me.”

Other than a 1969 tie between Mike Cuellar and Denny McLain, it was the closest race in the history of the AL award.

Rays closer Fernando Rodney got the other first- and came in fifth.

The 38-year-old Dickey was listed first on 27 of 32 National League ballots and totaled 209 points, 113 more than 2011 winner Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Washington lefty finished third.

Cincinnati right-hander and Atlanta closer Craig Kimbrel each received a first-, as did Gonzalez. Kershaw had two.

Dickey joined Dwight Gooden (1985) and three-time winner Tom Seaver as the only Mets to win the award. The right-hander went 20-6 with a 2.73 ERA, making him the club’s first 20-game winner since Frank Viola in 1990, and became the first major leaguer in 24 years to throw consecutive one-hitters.

Perhaps most impressive, Dickey did it all during a season when the fourth-place Mets finished 74-88.

“It just feels good all over,” he said on MLB Network.

Dickey switched from conventional pitcher to full-time knuckleballer in a last-ditch effort to save his career. It took him years to finally master the floating, darting pitch, which he often throws harder (around 80 mph) and with more precision than almost anyone who used it before him.

“I knew what I was going to be up against in some regard when I embraced this pitch,” Dickey said.

He was the first cut at Mets spring training in 2010 but earned a spot in the big league rotation later that season and blossomed into a dominant All-Star this year. He led the NL in strikeouts (230), innings (233 2-3), complete games (five) and shutouts (three) — pitching through an abdominal injury most of the way.

“I am not a self-made man by any stretch of the imagination,” Dickey said. “The height of this story, it’s mind-blowing to me, it really is.”

A member of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team and a first-round draft pick out of Tennessee, Dickey was devastated when the Texas Rangers reduced their signing-bonus offer from more than $800,000 to $75,000 after they discovered during a physical that he was missing a major ligament in his pitching elbow.

Undeterred, perseverance got him to the big leagues anyway. When he failed, the knuckleball brought him back.

Among those he thanked ceaselessly for helping him on that long and winding road to success were all his proud knuckleball mentors, including Charlie Hough, Tim Wakefield and Hall of Famer Phil Niekro.

“It brings a real degree of legitimacy I think to the knuckleball fraternity and I’m glad to represent them and I’m certainly grateful to all those guys,” Dickey said. “This was a victory for all of us.”

Dickey said he received 127 text messages and 35-40 phone calls in the moments immediately following the Cy Young announcement.

The only call he took was from Niekro, a 318-game winner from 1964-87. The first texts Dickey responded to were from Wakefield and Hough.

“Most well-deserved,” Niekro said in a comment provided by the Hall of Fame. “I’m super proud of him, as a pitcher and as an individual.”

Dickey has one year left on his contract at $5.25 million and New York general manager Sandy Alderson has said signing the pitcher to a multiyear deal is one of his top priorities. Alderson, however, would not rule out trading his unlikely ace.

“I believe the Mets are going to be a lot better and I want to be part of the solution,” Dickey said, adding that he hopes the sides can strike a deal and he’d be happy to end his career in New York.

“I want to be loyal to an organization that’s given me an opportunity,” he said. “At the same time, you don’t want to be taken advantage of. I’ve been on that side of it, too, as a player.”

Price went 20-5 to tie Jered Weaver for the American League lead in victories and winning percentage. The 27-year-old lefty had the lowest ERA at 2.56 and finished sixth in strikeouts with 205.

Verlander, also the league MVP a year ago, followed that up by going 17-8 with a 2.64 ERA and pitching the Detroit Tigers to the World Series. He led the majors in strikeouts (239), innings (238 1-3) and complete games (six).

Price tossed 211 innings in 31 starts, while Verlander made 33. One factor that could have swung some votes, however, was this: Price faced stiffer competition in the rugged AL East than Verlander did in the AL Central.

“I guess it’s a blessing and a curse at the same time,” Price said. “There’s not an easy out in the lineups every game. It feels like a postseason game.”

The No. 1 pick in the 2007 amateur draft out of Vanderbilt, Price reached the majors the following year and has made three straight All-Star teams.

Despite going 19-6 with a 2.72 ERA in 2010, he finished a distant second in Cy Young voting to Felix Hernandez, who won only 13 games for last-place Seattle but dominated most other statistical categories that year.

The two MVP awards will be announced Thursday. Verlander’s teammate, Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera, is a leading contender in the American League.

Notes: The last AL pitcher to win back-to-back Cy Youngs was Boston’s Pedro Martinez in 1999 and 2000. San Francisco RHP Tim Lincecum did it in the National League in 2008-09. … Price and Dickey became the fourth pair of Cy Young winners born in the same state, according to STATS. The others were Jim Lonborg and Mike McCormick in 1967 (California), Viola and Orel Hershiser in 1988 (New York) and Pat Hentgen and John Smoltz in 1996 (Michigan). … Niekro and his brother, Joe, both finished second in Cy Young voting, as did fellow knuckleballer Wilbur Wood.

MLB Trades and News: Marlins trade three stars to Jays as part of blockbuster deal

MIAMI (AP) — The a year ago didn’t work, so now they’re trying another payroll purge, shedding some of their biggest stars and their multimillion-dollar salaries in one .

Rebranded in a new ballpark at the start of 2012, the Marlins were up to their old ways Tuesday, swapping high-priced talent for . Miami traded All- Jose Reyes, left-hander and ace right-hander Josh Johnson to the Toronto Blue Jays, a person familiar with the agreement said.

The person confirmed the trade to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the teams weren’t officially commenting. The person said the trade sent several of the Blue Jays’ best young players to Miami.

The stunning agreement came less than a year after the Marlins added Reyes, Buehrle and closer in an uncharacteristic $191 million spending binge as they moved into a new ballpark. The acquisitions raised high hopes, but the Marlins instead finished last in the NL East.

The latest paring of salary actually began in July, when the Marlins parted with former NL , and right-hander Anibal Sanchez, among others. Bell, the team’s high-profile bust, was traded to Arizona last month.

Under owner Jeffrey Loria, long the target of fan acrimony, the Marlins have usually been among ’s thriftiest teams. Management pledged that would change with the new ballpark, but team officials were disappointed with attendance in 2012, and revenue fell far short of their projections.

Even so, the came as a shock. The players involved must undergo physicals before the trade becomes final.

Giancarlo Stanton, the Marlins’ precocious slugger, wasn’t involved in the deal but wasn’t happy about it.

Stanton said he was mad about the trade “Plain & Simple,” he tweeted shortly after the news broke.

The housecleaning was also the subject of much mirth on Twitter.

“Good trade, I think we won it,” tweeted FakeSamson, a site that mocks Marlins president David Samson.

Toronto star Jose Bautista had a different interpretation.

“Its a good day to be a bluejay!” he tweeted.

The swap was easier for the Marlins to swing because of their longstanding policy of refusing to include no-trade clauses in contracts.

The deal gave an immediate boost to the Blue Jays, who have not reached the playoffs since winning their second consecutive World Series in 1993. Toronto went 73-89 this season and finished fourth in the AL East for the fourth straight year, again falling short in a division that includes big spenders.

The Marlins changed their name a year ago but failed to change their losing ways, and instead of contending for a playoff berth, they finished 69-93, their worst record since 1999.

The Marlins drew more than 2.2 million fans but had projected attendance of nearly 3 million. Team officials blamed the difference in part on manager Ozzie Guillen’s laudatory comments early in the year about former Cuban leader Fidel Castro, which antagonized a large segment of an already-small fan base.

Guillen was fired after only one season with the team and replaced this month by the Marlins’ former backup catcher, Mike Redmond.

President of baseball operations Larry Beinfest hinted at a big change in direction less than two weeks ago.

“We’ve kind of lost our Marlins way,” he said. “The real Marlins way was we always outperformed our challenges. Whatever our challenges were, whether it was playing in a football stadium or weather or a lack of fans, or lack of revenue for that matter, we always found a way to outperform our challenges.”

It now appears management will field a team with the expectation players will outperform their contracts, which was the franchise model for most of the past decade. The roster shake-up during the season reduced the payroll to $90.3 million from $112 million on opening day, and it now could be dramatically lower next season.

Reyes has $96 million left on a deal that expires in 2018. Buehrle has $52 million remaining on a deal that expires in 2015.

While the team was a disappointment, newcomers Buehrle and Reyes played up to expectations. Buehrle went 13-13 with a 3.74 ERA and topped 200 innings for the 12th year in a row. Reyes hit .287 with 40 steals in 160 games.

Johnson, who led the NL in ERA in 2010, went 8-14 this year with a 3.81 ERA. He was limited to nine starts in 2011 because of right shoulder inflammation.

In their 20 seasons the Marlins have reached the postseason only twice, as wild-card teams in 1997 and 2003. Both times they won the World Series.

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — After scored the fastest U.S. goal in World Cup qualifying, the Americans played a listless game, lost to Jamaica for the first time and put pressure on themselves to win their against Jamaica next week.

Rodolph Austin and Luton Shelton scored on free kicks as the Reggae Boyz rallied for a historic 2-1 victory Friday night, their first win in 19 games against the Americans.

“Jamaica deserved that win. They were hungrier and they were more determined,” U.S. coach said. “We have to fix it now.”

Jamaica (2-0-1) leads Group A with at the , and the U.S. (1-1-1) dropped into a second- with Guatemala (1-1-1), which overcame an early deficit to -1 at home over (0-2-1).

“We have to do to do a better job with concentration,” American goalkeeper said. “To give away six, seven free kicks in that area is not good enough.”

The U.S. hosts Jamaica on Tuesday night at Columbus, Ohio.

“We need to figure out a way, whether it’s more width, whether it’s more crosses, whether it’s just doing a better job of keeping the ball,” Dempsey said.

Playing his first competitive match in three months, Dempsey put the U.S. ahead 35 seconds in. The 60th-ranked Reggae Boyz, who had been 0-10-8 against the U.S., rallied with goals in the 23rd and 62nd minutes on free kicks caused by from and Maurice Edu.

“Next game we have to limit the mistakes and create more chances.,” Edu said. “We are disappointed but we still have more games to play.”

Jamaican fans ran onto the field when the match ended.

“It means a lot to me to beat the U.S. for the first time,” said Shelton, who plays for Karabukspor in Turkey. “I cried after the game. I have never cried after such an important game. I believe our team is a very good team and to create history was sweet.”

The top two nations advance to next year’s six-nation regional finals, which will produce three qualifiers for the 2014 tournament in Brazil. The U.S. is not a dire situation yet, with home games against Jamaica and Guatemala, and a road match at Antigua.

“We will have to step it up a level and definitely have to watch their free kicks, because they were very dangerous obviously on the free kicks,” Beckerman said.

Missing injured Landon Donovan (hamstring) and Michael Bradley (thigh), the 33rd-ranked U.S. was dominated in the midfield, was outshot 9-7 and dropped to 0-1-4 in qualifiers at The Office, as Independence Park is known.

The U.S. went ahead after Edu played a through pass to Herculez Gomez, whose initial shot and follow-up both were stopped by goalkeeper Dwayne Miller. The second shot rebounded to Dempsey, who scored from about 10 yards for his 28th international goal. He has scored in all three U.S. qualifiers this year.

Dempsey’s previous match was a World Cup qualifier at Guatemala on June 12. Dempsey had held the record for fastest U.S. goal in a qualifier when he scored 53 seconds in against Barbados in 2008.

“Maybe we were leading too early,” Klinsmann said.

Dempsey moved from Fulham to Tottenham on Aug. 31 just before the transfer deadline closed and had missed the start of the English Premier League season while his club status was sorted out.

Jamaica increasingly dominated the midfield, and the Reggae Boyz tied the score after a late tackle by Beckerman on Austin gave Jamaica a free kick about 28 yards out. Austin took the kick and his shot deflected off Beckerman’s right foot on the defensive wall and past Howard.

Beckerman was replaced in the 58th minute by Danny Williams, who made his first competitive appearance for the U.S. Williams also had been eligible to play for Germany.

Howard went down after colliding with Shelton about eight minutes into the second half, and Jamaica took the lead after Austin was fouled by Edu. Shelton’s free kick from about 25 yards went in just inside the post as Howard dived to his right, extending his Jamaican record with his 34th international goal.

“We can repair certain things within four days,” Klinsmann said. “We have to bounce back. We have to prove everybody wrong.”

NOTES: Right back Steve Cherundolo was scratched because of a strained right calf. Captain Carlos Bocanegra, who transferred last week from fourth-tier Glasgow Rangers to second-tier Racing Santander, was benched. … The game was televised in the U.S. on the new beIN Sport network, available to only a small fraction of television households that receive certain tiers of DirecTV, the DISH Network and, in some cases, Comcast. … Carlos Ruiz scored in the 58th and 79th minutes for Guatemala, and Dwight Pezzarossi added a goal in second-half injury time. Peter Byers had put the visitors ahead in the 38th.

NBA Playoffs: Heat listing Bosh as ‘day-to-day’

MIAMI (AP) — Chris Bosh has been telling the Miami Heat that he’s ready to play.

The Heat seem ready to listen.

And Game 5 of the – which wouldn’t be lacking for drama with Boston and Miami tied at two games apiece – may have another significant layer of intrigue.

Bosh’s status was upgraded to “day-to-day” by on Monday, the first deviation by the team after more than three weeks of simply saying his absence was indefinite because of a strained lower . Spoelstra wouldn’t guarantee that Bosh plays in Game 5, but opened the door to there at least being a chance of the All-Star forward-center suiting up.

“He’ll get a vote,” Spoelstra said of how much Bosh’s input will matter in determining when he takes the floor. “Again, everything is heightened right now. These are extreme circumstances. Everybody will be involved in the decision, if and when it happens. But you always have to take the player’s opinion with a . They all say they’re ready. … He said he was ready 10 days ago.”

The were ready for him then, too.

So if Tuesday is the Bosh comeback night, Boston will not be caught off-guard.

“We don’t have to do anything different,” coach said. “We’ve prepared every game like Bosh is going to play. And eventually, he will.”

Bosh was watching from the bench for the two games in Boston, where the Celtics managed to tie the series by following largely the same formula – building a big lead, then holding on at the end.

Of the 101 minutes of in Boston, the Heat led for exactly . The Celtics have led by at least 15 points in each of the last three games, never trailing by more than eight, though managed to win only two of those contests. And Game 4 nearly slipped away as well, Miami digging out of an 18-point hole to take the lead late, before falling 93-91 in overtime as Dwyane Wade’s 3-pointer to win it fell just short at the final buzzer.

Boston’s Paul Pierce fouled out for the third time in the last five games, after having that happen three times in the first 122 playoff games of his career. And Miami’s LeBron James picked up six fouls for the first time in his 107 playoff games, none of the six fouls being of the shooting variety and four of them coming with the Heat in possession of the ball.

“I thought a few of my fouls were, I don’t know,” James said Sunday night.

Who fouled and when made for good theater, but all that ultimately mattered was the score, with Boston guard Rajon Rondo scoring the final three points of the game and the Celtics turning a best-of-seven series into a best-of-three.

“We’ve got to win a game in Miami, of course,” Pierce said after Game 4. “We have a chance of winning this series. It’s not going to be easy. You know, a good old classic bar fight. Going in to it you got to expect every game to be like this. Coming down to the wire, both teams trying to find an edge.”

This core of Celtics – Rondo, Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen, who seems to be playing without the pain that left him hobbling a week ago – have found themselves in a 2-2 series eight times before. Every time, they’ve won Game 5, though seven of those wins have come in Boston.

The exception was at Cleveland in 2010, a 120-88 romp that went down James’ final home game as a member of the Cavaliers.

“No one said it was easy,” James said. “This is great. This is what the postseason is all about. It’s about adversity and ups and downs. Like I said, you never get too high and you never get too low. We look forward to Game 5.”

They’ll especially look forward to it if Bosh gets the all-clear sign on Tuesday. Bosh has had several on-court workouts in the past week, and Spoelstra said he was going to evaluate him again Monday.

Bosh was injured late in the first half of the opening game in the Indiana-Miami second round series on May 13. In the nine postseason games since, Miami has gone 5-4. If he can play, the Heat would welcome whatever Bosh can provide, even if that means working a key player back into the lineup to face Garnett and Boston’s frontcourt in the midst of a playoff series.

“Chris is obviously very talented and poses his own problems, but I don’t think Kevin is that concerned with whoever’s there,” Rivers said.

Since Bosh arrived with James to play alongside Wade in Miami in July 2010, the Heat have won 72 percent (116-45) of their games with him in the lineup. Without Bosh, Miami has won only 52 percent of the time, going 12-11.

“We couldn’t win without him for two years. And not only could we not win without him, we looked horrible without him,” Spoelstra said. “So I think that was the bigger challenge. If and when we ever get to that point, we’ll gladly take that challenge. He was our most important player for a long period of time.”

NBA union seeks arbitration over Bird rights issue

Guard Jeremy Lin of the watches work outs prior to his team taking on the in Game Five of the in the 2012 Playoffs on May 9, 2012 at the American Airines Arena in Miami, Florida.

(PhatzRadio / ) — Now that the players union has requested arbitration with the NBA for four players who were waived this season, the futures of Jeremy Lin of the New York Knicks and Chauncey Billups of the are uncertain.

The NBA contends don’t apply when a player switches teams through waivers and the union is challenging it. A player with means a team can re-sign him without regard to the salary cap.

“Bird and Early Bird rights are among the most valuable rights that players have under the Collective Bargaining Agreement,” said NBPA Executive Director Billy Hunter said in a statement Tuesday night. “These rights simply cannot be extinguished in the absence of an affirmative decision by a player to select a team through free agency. We will ask the to resolve this dispute on an expedited basis and prior to the commencement of free agency.”

Lin and teammate , Billups and J.J. Hickson of the were among the players named and the decision will affect other waived players going forward. The matter must be resolved before July 1, when free agency opens.

In his second season, Lin was waived by the before the season, then the and acquired by the Knicks.

He’s a restricted free agent and is expected to receive offers from other teams, but if he loses his Bird rights it prolongs unrestricted free agency for Lin and limits the size of his raises based on years of service. Players with three or fewer years are restricted if their team makes a qualifying offer by June 30.

Hickson, in his fourth season, was waived by the . Novak, in his sixth, was waived by the San Antonio Spurs.

Billups’ situation is more complex. In his 15th season, he was released by the Knicks via the one-time amnesty provision that was part of the collective bargaining agreement. He was acquired off waivers by the Clippers. When a player is waived via amnesty he is paid the balance of his contract but it will not count against that team’s salary cap.

Before Billups was lost with an Achilles tear Feb. 6, the Clippers were hoping to re-sign him and checked with the union to assure they had Bird rights, people familiar with the situation told USA TODAY Sports, which also would allow them to do a sign-and-trade to get something in return. Billups earned $14.2 million this season, with the Clippers picking up $2 million and the Knicks paying the rest.

Then there’s the issue of Billups’ raises that are guaranteed by the CBA if he signs another deal. Will they be based on the salary he was paid by the Knicks or Clippers?

The Clippers are $1 million over the salary cap and would need for Billups to retain his Bird rights to help re-sign him. They don’t have much flexibility under the cap or a first-round draft pick, which they sent to the New Orleans Hornets in the trade for Chris Paul.

Guard Mo Williams has a player option for next season. If he opts in, the team will be at $59 million. If he opts out, that number drops to $51 million.
