After allowing Ichiro Suzuki’s single, Rodney completed his third save by retiring Robinson Cano and Travis Hafner.

Zobrist put the Rays up 2-0 on a two-out, two-run double off Andy Pettitte (3-1) in the fifth.

RED SOX 6, A’s 5

(PhatzRadio / Boston Hearld) — Given his familiar surname and uniform number, Stephen Drew always knew that Red Sox fans may not be so eager to warm to him. But then, a spring training concussion caused him to miss Opening Day, and his replacement, slick-fielding homegrown shortstop Jose Iglesias, began the season on a 9-for-20 roll.

For Drew, it was the worst possible storm.

And by the time Drew came to the plate in the fourth inning this afternoon at , his early-season slump had reached 4-for-36 depths. He had one extra-base hit, one RBI and 13 strikeouts, and the only thing preventing the masses from booing J.D. Drew’s younger brother back to the bench was Iglesias’ struggles since being sent to Triple-A Pawtucket.

But the Red Sox signed Stephen Drew in the offseason because they believe he is an above-average shortstop due to bounce back after a gruesome ankle injury in 2011. And for the first time, Drew rewarded their faith with a two-out, two-run triple to help pace a 6-5 victory over the Oakland Athletics in the finale of a three-game series.

“I just think it’s a matter of at-bats for Stephen before things begin to click with him,” Red Sox manager said earlier this week. “Because it’s not a flaw in the swing or anything like that. It’s just a matter of getting some consistent timing and building some confidence on his end.”

Trailing 3-0 in the fourth inning, the Red Sox finally broke through against hard-throwing A’s lefty Brett Anderson on back-to-back one-out doubles by David Ortiz and . Drew’s triple tied the game before the Red Sox scored three more runs in the fifth.

And on a day when ace walked six batters and lacked usual command, four relievers combined to record the final 10 outs, punctuated by closer Andrew Bailey’s scoreless ninth inning.

The Red Sox secured their fifth series victory and improved to 14-7.

In a matchup of ace lefties, neither Lester nor Anderson was especially sharp.

Lester labored through the first two innings, walking three batters and battling a seemingly tight strike zone from plate umpire Jerry Layne. But it wasn’t until the fourth inning that he allowed runs, as the A’s seized a 3-0 lead on Chris Young’s three-run homer off a billboard atop the Green Monster.

Anderson, meanwhile, cruised through three innings, making him look familiar to the Red Sox. He tossed a two-hit shutout at Fenway Park on July 6, 2009, blanked the Sox for eight innings April 19, 2011 in Oakland and allowed one run in six innings of a start against them last season.

But after tying the game in the fourth, the Red Sox took the lead in the fifth. Jacoby Ellsbury led off with a single, then stole second and scored on Shane Victorino’s double. After Dustin Pedroia reached on an infield single, Ortiz singled to left field to score Victorino and knock Anderson from the game.

A’s reliever Chris Resop hit Napoli to reload the bases for pinch-hitting Daniel Nava, who singled to center field to score Pedroia for a 6-3 lead.

The A’s cut the margin with a run in the seventh against reliever Junichi Tazawa and another in the eighth on Chris Young’s solo homer against Koji Uehara. But Bailey struck out the side in the ninth for his fifth save in six chances.

But Rhys Patchell added to his three first-half penalties to give Blues a and leave the home side with only a .

Hunter was unsuccessful with his first two penalties as Cardiff established a 6-0 lead through Patchell’s kicking.

A wayward pass by Dave Denton ended a promising Edinburgh attack before Hunter broke his duck for the evening to reduce the hosts’ .

Patchell replied and then the Edinburgh fly-half kicked another successful penalty.

The first try of the evening came when Patchell evaded two men before unloading for Paterson to cross. However, the Cardiff fly-half missed the conversion.

Edinburgh responded early in the with Fife carrying the ball into contact and substitute Nel forcing his way over. Hunter added the conversion.

Ulster (12) 26

Cons: Pienaar 3

Zebre (3) 3

Pens: Halangahu

(PhatzRadio / ) — Pro12 leaders Ulster made hard work of securing a bonus-point victory over basement side Zebre at Ravenhill.

Rob Herring went over for an early Ulster try but the game became scrappy before Robbie Diack’s touchdown in the final minute of the first half.

Ulster led 12-3 at the break and they upped the tempo in the second half, with Diack scoring another try.

The was clinched on 73 minutes when Ricky Andrew sprinted in from Michael Heaney’s pass.

Ulster started and finished the first half strongly but they were frustrated by a resolute Zebre side for most of the opening 40 minutes.

Chris Cochrane went over from an Andrew Trimble off-load only for the television match official to rule that his trailing foot went into touch.

The resulting Zebre line-out was over-thrown with the alert Herring catching before driving over for the opening try on eight minutes.

Ruan Pienaar converted but Ulster failed to build on their lead through a combination of sloppy play and firm Zebre defending.

Daniel Halangahu’s first penalty effort fell short although he put the Italians on the scoreboard with a penalty after 34 minutes.

A superb Pienaar kick into the corner set up Ulster’s second try in the final minute of the half.

Darren Cave created the space and his pass allowed Diack an easy passage to line before Pienaar pushed the conversion attempt.

Ulster pressed on the restart, helped by the introduction of prop John Afoa following his return from New Zealand.

Iain Henderson claimed a try at the base of a post but the television match official ruled that the was held up short of the line.

The third try finally came on 57 minutes, with Cave again providing the pass for Diack to sprint under posts with Pienaar adding the extras.

The bonus point was secured seven minutes from time, the move starting from a scrum and ending with Andrew charging over from Heaney’s pass.

Pienaar slotted over the conversion and despite a sluggish display, the target of a five-point victory had been achieved.

Ulster: Andrew, Trimble, Cave, L. Marshall, Cochrane, Jackson, Pienaar, Court, Herring, Fitzpatrick, Muller, Stevenson, Henderson, Henry, Diack.

Replacements: Olding for L. Marshall (38), Walsh for Cochrane (59), Heaney for Jackson (69), McComb for Court (66), Annett for Herring (66), Afoa for Fitzpatrick (41), Black for Stevenson (69), McComish for Henderson (11).

TORONTO (AP) — Jose Bautista, Adam Lind and Brett homered and the Blue Jays took advantage of a three-error game by normally sure-handed to beat the Rays.

It was a career worst performance for Longoria, the AL’s third baseman in 2009 and 2010. He became the seventh player in Rays history to make three errors in a game.

Matt Joyce homered for the Rays, who have lost six of eight.

Ricky Romero (2-0) allowed three runs and eight hits in six-plus innings to win.

Jeff Niemann (0-2) allowed five runs — two earned — on just three hits in five-plus innings.

ORIOLES 3, 2

CHICAGO (AP) — Nolan Reimold homered for the fourth consecutive game and made a terrific diving catch in left field, helping the Orioles beat the White Sox.

Baltimore had just one hit before Robert Andino singled with one out in the sixth. Reimold then hit a drive to left-center off John Danks, giving the Orioles a 2-0 lead. J.J. Hardy followed with a drive to virtually the same spot for his third homer.

Reimold also had a big home run Monday night, helping Baltimore rally for a 10-4 victory over the White Sox in 10 innings. He is batting .394 (13 for 33) in the past eight games.

Wei-Yin Chen earned his first major league win in his second career game, allowing two runs and six hits in 5 1-3 innings.

TIGERS 3, ROYALS 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Miguel Cabrera snapped out of his slump with a pair of hits, driving in the go-ahead run and helping the Tigers to a win over the Royals.

Cabrera was 0 for 22 before his single in the third inning, but it was his RBI single off reliever Greg Holland in the eighth that proved most important. It came on the heels of singles by Andy Dirks and Brennan Boesch, and snapped a 1-all tie.

added an RBI single to make things a bit more comfortable for Octavio Dotel (1-0), who had worked around Brayan Pena’s double during a scoreless seventh inning.

Joaquin Benoit pitched around a two-out triple by Jeff Francoeur in the eighth, and Jose Valverde took care of the ninth for his second save in three tries.

Bruce Chen (0-1) took the loss.
