(PhatzRadio / MMA) — Approaching two years since his , former interim on Tuesday announced his retirement from MMA.

Carwin (12-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC) leaves the sport on a two-fight skid, but more importantly after fighting through injuries and surgeries.

Carwin posted on his Twitter account late Tuesday: “Officially retired 2day:-) thank you to my family, friends and fans! #dreambig GOD BLESS!!!”

Carwin last fought at UFC 131 in June 2011 against Junior dos Santos in a eliminator. He took Dos Santos the distance, but dropped a .

Several months later, he said he expected to be back by the start of 2012. But not long after that, he revealed back surgery would him until the middle of 2012.

That recovery took longer than planned, but Carwin hoped to return in the fall. While recovering, he was tapped to coach Season 16 of “The ” opposite , with a fight planned for December.

But a month before the fight, a knocked Carwin out of that bout.

And after a in 2011, the back surgery and the , the 38-year-old Carwin elected to hang up the gloves.

Carwin signed with the UFC in 2008 after starting his pro career 8-0 with eight first-round stoppages, including Ring of Fire’s heavyweight title.

His run of first-round finishes continued in the UFC with wins over Christian Wellisch, Neil Wain and .

In March 2010, with champion Brock Lesnar sidelined, Carwin fought for the interim heavyweight title and finished Mir with a “Knockout of the Night” performance – also in the first round.

That win set up a title unification fight against Lesnar, and through five minutes, Carwin appeared on the way to the belt. After taking a beating from Carwin, Lesnar survived the round – and Carwin had nothing left in the tank in the second, eventually tapping to an arm-triangle choke.

Carwin underwent his neck surgery later that year, then returned for the fight with Dos Santos – which would be his last.

Amazingly, in Carwin’s 12-0 start to his career, his fights averaged just 81 seconds.

Boxing: Floyd Mayweather Jr. dominates Robert Guerrero to win title fight with lopsided decision

f79955b2d8eb0137c6ae7075596b11ec Boxing: Floyd Mayweather Jr. dominates Robert Guerrero to win title fight with lopsided decision

(PhatzRadio / AP) — LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The defence was back, just like it used to be. .’s was back, too, just like he used to be.

And Mayweather was a winner once again — just like he always is.

Mayweather fought as if he had never left the ring, coming back from a year’s to win a unanimous 12-round decision over Robert Guerrero in their welterweight .

The was defence, and Mayweather followed it perfectly. With his father directing from the corner after a 13-year , he dominated Guerrero in a performance not totally expected at the age of 36.

“I needed my father tonight,” Mayweather said. “My defence was on point and he told me to stick with my defence and that the less you get hit the longer you last.”

Mayweather was masterful at times, landing thudding right hands and bloodying Guerrero’s face in a performance that mimicked some of his best fights. Mayweather hurt Guerrero on several , including a series of right hands near the end of the eighth round that buckled Guerrero’s .

All three judges scored the bout 117-111. The Associated Press had it 119-109.

“We did it again,” Mayweather said after earning at least $32 million for his night’s work. “I take my hat off to Robert Guerrero. He’s a true warrior.”

If it wasn’t terribly pleasing to the of 15,880, it was terribly effective. Mayweather made a fighter who hadn’t lost in eight years look befuddled as he danced and moved and shot out right hands with increasing frequency.

He remained unbeaten in 44 fights and, more importantly, looked so fresh that he may follow through on his plan to fight again in September.

“I was looking for the but I hurt my hand,” Mayweather said. “I feel bad I didn’t give the fans the .”

Mayweather was booed at times for not mixing it up more, but he didn’t need to. He was content to move and land and right hand leads, while Guerrero grew increasingly frustrated trying to chase him.

When Guerrero did hit him, Mayweather quickly got out of the way and, more often than not, landed a right hand of his own.

“I landed some good shots on him,” Guerrero said. “He’s a great fighter. He’s slick and quick.”

The fight at the MGM Grand arena settled into a familiar pattern from the third round on as Mayweather made adjustments and started landing some crisp right leads to Guerrero’s head. Guerrero was eager to trade punches, but often couldn’t find Mayweather, who had already moved out of range.

Before the fight there had been some concern about Mayweather having ring rust after going a year without a fight. But he didn’t miss a beat, using his defensive skills to baffle Guerrero and keep him off balance.

Mayweather was a 5-1 favourite coming into the fight, but Guerrero was considered dangerous coming off a big win over Andre Berto. Guerrero hadn’t lost in eight years, and vowed to be the first to beat Mayweather, now 44-0.

But he had never fought Mayweather, who got hit more than normal in his last fight against Miguel Cotto a year ago.

“Honestly, Floyd could have danced the whole night,” Floyd Mayweather Sr. said. “There wasn’t anything he couldn’t do in there tonight.”

Mayweather had crafted much of his career using his defence as his main weapon, and said he turned to his father — who used to be his trainer — to regain his old style.

“After the Cotto fight I realized my defence wasn’t what it should be and I had to hone my skills,” Mayweather said.

By the fifth round Mayweather’s confidence was growing and he began landing some heavy right hands to Guerrero’s head. Guerrero kept plodding after him, but paid the price as Mayweather shot counter right hands through his defences

Mayweather was faster and stronger than Guerrero, who was fighting for only the at 147 pounds. Mayweather said he hurt his right hand while going after the in the eighth round, but still managed to control the fight round after round.

Guerrero (31-2-1) was cut over his left eye in the eighth round, when Mayweather seemed on the verge of stopping him.

Ringside punch stats showed Mayweather landing 60 per cent of his power punches, an unusually high rate. That included 23 of 30 power punches in the eighth round, when Guerrero was wobbled.

All told, Mayweather was credited with landing 195 punches to 113 for Guerrero.

“He ran like a chicken,” said Guerrero’s trainer and father, Ruben. “I thought we were going to go toe-to-toe with him.”

Robert Guerrero didn’t complain about Mayweather’s style at all. Not when he wants to fight him again some day.

“I’m going to keep fighting and hopefully before Floyd Mayweather retires I’m going to get that shot again,” Guerrero said.

Mayweather said he planned to fight again in September, a short turnaround for him, as part of a six-fight deal he has with the Showtime network.

Floyd Mayweather-Robert Guerrero undercard results

(PhatzRadio / AP) — LAS VEGAS — Abner Mares scored a ninth-round TKO of Daniel Ponce de Leon to win the WBC featherweight title in the final undercard bout ahead of Saturday’s main event between Floyd Mayweather and Robert Guerrero at the Arena.

Mares, who had floored Ponce de Leon in the second round, scored another knockdown with an overhand right in the ninth. Ponce de Leon made it to his feet, but Mares closed in, raining blows on the champion until referee Jay Nagy intervened with 40 seconds left in the round.

“When I dropped him both times, it was hard,” said Mares, who was moving up from super bantamweight, where he holds the WBC title. “I wasn’t just fighting some opponent, he’s my friend. Especially the second time, I hoped he stayed down.”

Ponce de Leon, who insisted the stoppage was premature, said at least three times he wanted a rematch.

“I don’t want to discredit Mares, but I was winning the fight,” Ponce de Leon said. “The ref stopped the fight so quickly.”

Leo Santa Cruz (24-0-1, 14 KOs) finished off Venezuela’s Alexander Munoz (36-5, 28 KOs) with a crushing TKO after five one-sided rounds.

Santa Cruz, a former bantamweight titleholder moving up to junior featherweight, floored Munoz in the third and fifth before one of his corner men entered the ring and referee Vic Drakulich waved it off at the 1:05 mark.

“I wanted to give a good show for the fans and that’s what I did,” said Santa Cruz, who landed 57 body shots and had a 135-26 edge in landed punches over the last three rounds. “I felt strong and confident tonight.”

J’Leon Love (16-0, 8 KOs) stayed undefeated thanks to a highly dubious split decision over gritty North Philadelphia middleweight Gabriel Rosado (21-7, 13 KOs) in the first televised pay-per-view bout.

Boos rained from the half-full crowd after the scores from ringside judges Glenn Trowbridge (95-94 to Rosado), Herb Santos (97-92 to Love, inexplicably) and Dave Moretti (95-94 to Love) were announced.

“I just fought a guy that has world championship experience and I thought I put up a good fight,” Love said. “We can do it again if he wants so we all know who’s the clear winner.”

The action was mostly even during the early rounds, but Rosado took control when he dumped Love to the canvas for the first time in the Las Vegas native’s career with a straight right hand near the end of the sixth. Love recovered nicely in the seventh and even got the better of a series of toe-to-toe exchanges in the eighth, but Rosado opened up in the ninth and landed the hardest shots of the fight, drawing oohs and aahs from the audience.

Love landed 191 of 487 punches (39 percent) compared to 165 of 555 for Rosado (30 percent), yet the Philadelphian was clearly landing the more meaningful blows.

“My performance spoke volumes tonight,” said Rosado, who was coming off a hard-fought loss in January to Gennady Golovkin in a world . “I don’t think I need to prove myself against him again but I’ll fight him if I have to.”

In the final prelim before the pay-per-view telecast, super middleweight prospect Ronald Gavril (4-0, 1 KO) stayed unbeaten with a third-round TKO of Roberto Yong (5-7-2, 4 KOs). Garvil had Yong on the ropes throughout most of the fight, which was scheduled for four rounds, before three straight head shots prompted referee Russell Mora to intervene at 2:12 of the third.

The victory made it 4-for-4 for Mayweather Promotions fighters in the non-pay-per-view .

Luis “Cuba” Arias (5-0, 3 KOs) outpointed DonYil Livingston (8-3-1, 4 KOs) in a six-round super middleweight bout. The Phoenix, Ariz., native overcame a strong finish by Livingston to pull out a majority decision by scores of 57-57, 58-56 and 58-55.

Badou Jack (14-0, 10 KOs), a rising light heavyweight prospect from Las Vegas, scored a third-round TKO of Michael Gbenga (13-8, 3 KOs), of Silver Spring, Md., by way of Accra, Ghana. Jack sent Gbenga to the canvas with a right hook to the body late in the third round. Gbenga made it to his feet but protested to referee Russell Mora that the punch was low. When the fighter refused to continue, Mora waved it off at the 2:26 mark.

In the night’s first bout, Las Vegas native Lanell Bellows (4-0-1, 4 KOs) scored a fourth-round TKO of Matthew Garretson (2-1, 1 KO) of Charleston, W. Va., in a four-round super middleweight fight. Bellows punished Garretson with body shots in the first two rounds before rocking him with a right uppercut near the end of the third. Referee Kenny Bayless put a stop to it just 32 seconds into the final round.

On Monday, Mitrione called Fox a ‘lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting
said it was ‘appalled’ and found the remarks ‘offensive and wholly unacceptable’

(PhatzRadio / MMA) — Two days after his 19-second win over Philip De Fries, UFC heavyweight has had his contract suspended by the promotion.

In a Monday appearance on The MMA Hour, Mitrione called Fox a “lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting .”

In response, the UFC issued a statement saying the 10 veteran’s contract has been suspended and he will be investigated.

“The UFC was appalled by the transphobic comments made by heavyweight Matt Mitrione today in an interview on ‘The MMA Hour,’” the statement read. “The organization finds Mr. Mitrione’s comments offensive and wholly unacceptable and – as a direct result of this significant breach of the UFC’s – Mr. Mitrione’s UFC contract has been suspended and the incident is being investigated. The UFC is a friend and of the (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community, and expects and requires all 450 of its athletes to treat others with and respect.”

The UFC in January announced a code of conduct for its fighters under contract.

Fox has been a near-permanent fixture in MMA news for the better part of the past month after SI.com reported that Fox, 37, had gender reassignment surgery in 2006 along with supplemental hormonal therapy.

Fox holds a 5-0 combined record as a professional and amateur fighter with all five wins coming in the first round. But the controversy has been centered around her potential opponents and whether they’re entering into fair fights with her.

Peggy Morgan recently told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) she wasn’t convinced that Fox didn’t hold a physical advantage over other women in the cage, despite the fact that “socially, yes, she is a woman.”

In the interview, Mitrione repeated referred to Fox as “he” and “him” and said he was “appalled” by Fox fighting other women.

“It’s an embarrassment to us as fighters, as a sport, and we all should protest that,” Mitrione said. “The woman that’s fighting him, props to you. I hope you beat his ass, and I hope he gets blackballed and never fights again because that’s disgusting and I’m appalled by that.”

Mitrione (6-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) on Saturday snapped a two-fight losing skid at UFC on FUEL TV 9 when he stopped De Fries quickly in the first round in Sweden. How quickly, if at all, he’ll be allowed back in the octagon to go after a second straight win remains to be seen.

Mitrione did not immediately return a request for comment.

Stann said the loss stings, but he was glad he fought someone he called one of his favorite fighters

(PhatzRadio / ) — SAITAMA, Japan — As far as storybook endings go, it’s going to be pretty hard to top this one.

After a torrid first-round pace in which both fighters scored multiple knockdowns, Wanderlei Silva (35-12-1 MMA, 5-7 ) knocked out (12-6, 6-5) in the second in his return to Japan — where he became an MMA legend years ago with the now-defunct Pride organization.

And if there was any concerns Silva would call it quits as he approaches 50 career fights, he likely set them aside for now.

The light-heavyweight bout headlined Saturday’s UFC on FUEL TV 8 event at in Saitama, Japan.

Stann took the middle of the cage and kept Silva’s back to the early in the fight. But when he moved inside, he slipped during a flurry, and Silva took advantage. He cut Stann above his nose with a blow and then looked to land a knee. But Stann answered with another flurry before moving back to the center, and Silva motioned for him to slug it out. Stann did just that, and he dropped Silva with a right hand as he came forward. But Silva recovered, and the two went back to the the middle.

Halfway through the action-packed round, the action finally slowed – but only because a knee from Stann landed low to the . After the restart, Stann landed an outside , but Silva countered perfectly with a right hand. Stann, though, then moved in and dropped Silva for a third time. Silva quickly returned to his feet and then drilled Stann and put him on the ground, where he was covered in the blood gushing from Stann’s nose.

The pace slowed in the second round, perhaps not surprisingly after the torrid first. But a Stann kick landed too low, and he was given a warning for the second low blow of the fight. On the restart, Silva landed a good head kick, and as things got going again, he then landed a huge right with a left hand right behind it. Stann covered up on the ground, but Silva landed four big shots on the ground to get the massive knockout.

The stoppage came at the 4:08 mark of the round.

“I’m so proud, and thanks to (UFC President) Dana White and the UFC for giving me this opportunity to fight here for my brothers,” the Brazilian fan favorite said after the fight. “My corner told me what I needed to do, and I’m glad I got to win back here.”

An emotional Stann, a former U.S. Marine who was born in Japan, said it hurt to lose the fight to one of his heroes, though he was glad he took the bout.

“I knew what I had at risk when I signed on the dotted line next to that man fighting here in Japan,” Stann said. “Wanderlei’s always been one of my favorite fighters ever. He’s one of the fighters who inspired me to start this sport, and I’m very proud to have been a part of his career — as much as this hurts right now. My heart’s broken, but I’m still proud that I put my name on the line and I fought him.”

Cain Velasquez will fight on weekend at 160
The co- will be Junior Dos Santos vs.
Velasquez will defend his for the first time since regaining it in December

(PhatzRadio / MMA) — For the second straight , the UFC is going to get heavy with its pay-per-view.

The UFC 160 main event will be a between champion Cain Velasquez (11-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC) and Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva (18-4 MMA, 2-1 UFC), a rematch from this past weekend. The co-main event features former champ Junior Dos Santos (15-2 MMA, 9-1 UFC) against (36-12 MMA, 1-1 UFC).

UFC President first revealed the planned to fans while in Ireland prior to heading to London for UFC on FUEL TV 7. Ariel Helwani of FUEL TV’s “UFC Tonight” said on Tuesday’s show that White confirmed the .

UFC 160 takes place May 25 at MGM in Las Vegas. The main card will air on pay-per-view following on FX and Facebook. The UFC’s 2012 Memorial Day weekend show, UFC 146 in Las Vegas, an all-heavyweight main card.

Velasquez will defend his heavyweight title for the first time since regaining it in December against Dos Santos at UFC 155. In that bout, Velasquez dominated Dos Santos for five rounds in a rematch from their UFC on FOX 1 meeting, which saw Dos Santos win with a 64-second . The fight with Silva will be his second – he dominated “Bigfoot” at UFC 146 to get a shot at regaining his title against Dos Santos, who was the only man to beat him.

Silva will be looked at by some as perhaps a surprise challenger for Velasquez given that he was beaten rather easily by him at UFC 146. But Silva rebounded from that loss to beat Travis Browne this past October at UFC on FX 5. And he followed that up at UFC 156 earlier this month with a stunning upset of Overeem. In that fight, Overeem pretty much had his way with Silva for the first 10 minutes of the fight. But quickly in the third round, Silva came out slugging. He pushed Overeem to the and began landing at will until Overeem was on the canvas. After the fight, White said even though Velasquez had beaten Silva soundly in their first meeting, the way he went through Overeem put him in consideration for a shot at the title. Now he’ll get it.

Dos Santos, of course, will look to rebound from his loss to Velasquez at UFC 155 in December. That was his first loss in the UFC and came in his second defense of the heavyweight title after a win over Frank Mir at UFC 146. He’ll get a crack at Overeem, a man he was itching to fight while he was champion. He acknowledged Velasquez had earned his shot in December, but didn’t deny he was not a fan of Overeem and wanted to fight him.

Overeem will try to climb back from his first loss since September 2007. The elite kickboxer was supposed to have a shot at Dos Santos’ heavyweight title at UFC 146, but failed a pre-fight drug test with elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone levels. The Nevada State Athletic Commission would not consider licensing him for a period of nine months, which amounted, effectively, to a non-suspension suspension for the Dutch fighter. His return earlier this month at UFC 156 was supposed to be a top contender’s fight for him, with a win securing him a shot at Velasquez. But a loss set the former Strikeforce champion back in the pack.

Boxing: Floyd Mayweather – ‘I feel bad for (Manny Pacquiao)’

5887cd3970480575e815c1dbd9a47f38 Boxing: Floyd Mayweather – ‘I feel bad for (Manny Pacquiao)’

(PhatzRadio / ) — He hasn’t seen the stunning knockout yet, but ’s top pound-for-, , knows what happened, and he says he “feels bad” for .

Pacquiao, the former eight-division , was knocked out cold with one second left in the sixth round of his fourth fight against on Saturday in .

“Things happen. You live and learn,” Mayweather said in an interview Monday with fighthype.com. “The only thing he can do is rejuvenate himself and bounce back like a .”

Mayweather, 35, who has not fought since winning a against in May, praised the performances of both fighters in what is likely to be voted as the fight of the year and knockout of the year.

“Marquez is a true champion, is a true champion. Both of them went out there and put on a good performance and that’s a good thing for the sport of ,” the undefeated welterweight and super welterweight champion said. “I wish Pacquiao nothing but the best. I wish that he can bounce back and recoup from this.

“In the sport of boxing, you really have to dedicate yourself to the craft. I think he’s got so on the outside that he’s worried about, you know.

“But it was a good thing he was able to come into the sport, you know, piggyback off my name and get a bunch of endorsement deals and make a good living.”

Mayweather addressed a possible megafight with Pacquiao only by suggesting that the Filipino has a lot of thinking to do based on the way he was knocked out, and that any possible fight between the two is a ways down the road.

“His focus should be on trying to take a vacation, get his mind right, and get a few tuneup fights so he can bounce back.

“I’m not here to talk bad about Pacquiao. I feel bad for him, honestly, I really feel bad for him.”

Mayweather said being knocked out cold is a lot different than just being knocked down and getting back up. Pacquiao went down face first and was out for nearly two minutes before coming to.

“When a guy gets knocked out and he can get up, and they sit him on his stool, they rub his back, he go home and ice himself, he go to the hospital and get checked out and he’s OK, that’s one thing.

“But when you got to wake a guy up with smelling salts and he got a concussion and he gotta go to the hospital overnight, that’s crucial. That’s close to the death.”

It wasn’t that severe for Pacquiao, who fell victim to the “perfect punch,” according to Marquez, a hard right-hand counterpunch that caught Pacquiao’s head as he was moving toward Marquez.

Pacquiao talked after the fight for a short while, went to the hospital but was released after a was negative, and returned to his suite at Mandalay Bay, where he played chess until 4 a.m. PT. The Nevada State Athletic Commission gave Pacquiao an automatic 90-day suspension, executive director Keith Kizer said Monday. Kizer also said the results of the post-fight drug tests will be known early next week.

“Hopefully, he’s OK. My prayers go out to the Pacquiao family. I know he loves the sport of boxing,” Mayweather told Fighthype.com, “so hopefully he can bounce back.”

Covered in a mask of blood, the 39-year-old fighter blasted Pacquiao with a huge right hand with one second remaining in the sixth round to score a decisive , the first time he defeated his Filipino adversary in four attempts.

Pacquiao charged into the Mexican counterpuncher’s danger zone and ran into a right hand, dropping the Filipino along the ropes. Pacquiao lay motionless for several seconds as the of 16,398 at the MGM erupted.

“That’s ,” said Pacquiao, who added he has no plans to retire. “I started to get confident, but I never expected that punch.”

Marquez said, “I knew after the last three rounds that he was going for the knockout and I could be knocked out at any time. I hit him with the perfect punch.”

, Pacquiao’s trainer, said he felt his fighter was in charge. “He just got a little too careless, but he was hurting Marquez,” the trainer said. Pacquiao had knocked Marquez down in the fifth round and nearly had him stopped at that point.

Marquez, who never had won a fight above 140 pounds, was behind on all three judges’ cards when the fight dramatically ended. This time, there was no need for Marquez (55-6-1, 40 KOs) to complain about the judges’ scoring. The former four-division had bitterly disputed the results of their three previous encounters, particularly his points loss last November in Las Vegas.

Marquez did not suffer a , as was believed earlier, just bruised. Pacquiao, meanwhile, was taken to the to get checked out. The CT scan was negative.

Asked about a fifth fight between the two, , who handles Pacquiao, said, “Why not? We haven’t seen such an exciting fight in years. This fight will go down in history as a ring classic.”

Pacquiao (54-5-2, 38 KOs), who also went down in the third round, has lost two fights in a row for the first time in his career and was stopped for the first time in more than 13 years.

The former eight-division had claimed world titles at 112, 122, 130, 135, 147 and 154 pounds. He had his seven-year winning streak snapped in June by Timothy Bradley Jr. when he lost a controversial split decision in Las Vegas.

He said he would be up for a fifth fight. “It’s up to my promoter. Let’s fight again,” Pacquiao said before heading to the hospital.

Pacquiao landed 94 total punches to Marquez’s 52, and outlanded Marquez in power punches 68-41. Pacquiao connected on 37% of his punches, while Marquez landed at a 21% clip. But in the end, he only needed one.

Prior to Saturday’s fight, parity held sway in the series which began in 2004 when they tussled at 125 pounds. Pacquiao had eked out a draw in 2004 and narrowly won disputed decisions in 2008 and 2011.

In a brawling preliminary bout, Cuban-born super-featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa of Miami won a unanimous decision against Michael Farenas of the Philippines. Gamboa, 30, a former Olympic gold medalist, remained unbeaten (22-0, 17 KOs). Farenas, a southpaw, dropped Gamboa late in the ninth round with a hard left, but was unable to finish him.

In the pro debut of 2012 U.S. Olympian Jose Ramirez, the lightweight from Avenal, Calif., stopped Corey Siegwarth of Denver with a first-round technical knockout.

Soccer Recap: Celtic boost Champions League hopes with Barca upset

(PhatzRadio / ) — Celtic produced a stunning 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the on Wednesday, rewarded for a disciplined defensive display against the European heavyweight and making the most of their rare attacks.

Victor Wanyama headed the in front from a corner in the 21st minute and teenage substitute Tony Watt rounded off a swift late on to score the .

Four-time Barca dominated possession but could only score in when found the net after being continuously thwarted by goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

It was the perfect result to mark 125 years since Celtic was founded.

“I think it was one of the greatest nights in the club’s ,” Celtic manager said. “It was very poignant at our 125th anniversary. One, to play Barcelona in such a prestigious game and two, to win the game under huge difficulties with the squad decimated by injuries and illness.

‘It was very poignant at our 125th anniversary. One, to play Barcelona in such a prestigious game and two, to win the game under huge difficulties with the squad decimated by injuries and illness.’—Celtic manager Neil Lennon

“The players are heroes, they are heroes to me, I can’t speak highly enough of their performance tonight and they will go down in the history books of the club as the team who beat probably the best team in the world.”

Barca’s first loss in Group G after three straight wins prevented them from securing early qualification for the phase.

“Before we played I knew they were good at set pieces and we didn’t want to concede too many and we didn’t give them too many chances,” Barcelona coach said through a translator. “But I can’t be satisfied because we want to win the game.

“It is a really difficult stadium but we were like the home team and we locked them in the box.”

The reverse of the result in the Camp Nou two weeks ago, when Barca came from behind to win 2-1, ended the Catalan side’s 12-match unbeaten run.

“It is not the first time we have lost a game like this and it won’t be the last,” said.

Celtic, which won its only European title in 1967, is now just two points behind Barcelona with games at Benfica and at home to Spartak Moscow remaining.

“We still have two very tough games,” Lennon said. “The problem is the players and staff will have to deal with is that the expectation level will increase. There is still a lot of work to do but we have given ourselves a platform.”
Rod the Mod’s beloved club

The Celtic outcome was such an unexpected result that even Rod Stewart burst into tears.

The rock star was caught on television crying at Celtic Park after the Scottish champions beat mighty Barcelona.

Stewart is one Celtic’s most devoted, and famous, supporters and makes mention of his love for the club in his hit song You’re in My Heart.

Barcelona took just eight minutes to put Forster under pressure with Xavi Hernandez powering in a shot from outside the penalty area.

But Celtic was crowding out the visitors in defence and when the hosts finally found the space to launch a they delivered.

Just like two weeks ago, Celtic took the lead by exploiting Barca’s defensive frailties.

“We knew we could affect them at corners,” Lennon said. “We looked at their back-post area with [Jordi] Alba in the zonal system and Charlie Mulgrew is one of the best dead-ball players around.”

Mulgrew’s delivery was met by Wanyama, who rose above Alba to head past Victor Valdes.

“The first goal was important and gave us the energy to go on,” said Nigeria midfielder Wanyama. “We have been working hard at set pieces, we knew we were going to get one and we did it well.”

Five minutes later, Celtic came close to stunning Barcelona again.

Another speedy break forward started by Kris Commons led to Adam Matthews delivering the ball into the penalty area where Giorgos Samaras was unable to make a connection before Valdes saved.

Barca couldn’t always get the space to find its rhythm, but looked dangerous when they did.

An interchange with Andres Iniesta after beating three defenders saw Messi break clean threw, but his effort was tipped over the crossbar by Forster.

The visitors weren’t panicking in the search for an equalizer, with the passing carousel around the penalty area patient before Xavi found the space to launch a shot that couldn’t match the quality of the buildup.

Alexis Sanchez was denied by the post before halftime from a header and, as Celtic continued to pack its defence, Forster was Celtic’s assuring presence between the posts.

The English goalkeeper kept out a dipping shot from Messi and pulled off a double save to deny Alexis, diving low and then using his feet to block the follow-up.

Forster did even better to deny Messi from point-blank range, palming the ball away with a diving save after the Argentina forward’s one-two with Jordi Alba ripped through the Celtic defence.

And there was an easy save to make when Messi sent a tame free kick straight at Forster.

Celtic went straight up the other end to score.

Forster’s clearance went high over Xavi and fell straight at the feet of 18-year-old striker Tony Watt, who lashed the ball straight past Valdes.

“I just saw Valdes, I thought to put it to the side of him and it might go in,” Watt said. “It’s probably the best moment of my life.”

Barca never gave up hope of a second comeback in two weeks, but even Messi’s late goal proved to be too late.

Forster was finally beaten only after he denied David Villa and Messi pounced to send the rebound into the roof of the net.

Celtic is two points behind the Spanish giants with two matches remaining.

Benfica 2, Spartak Moscow 0

Substitute Oscar Cardozo scored two second-half goals in Lisbon to give Benfica its first victory this season.

Cardozo came on at halftime and headed in a cross from Melgarejo cross in the 55th minute. The Paraguayan extended the Portuguese team’s lead in the 69th when he received a pass from Ola John on the and struck a left-foot shot past goalkeeper Artem Rebrov.

After two defeats and a draw, the victory keeps alive Benfica’s hopes of reaching the knockout round from Group G.

The Lisbon club has four points, five behind leader Barcelona and three back from Celtic with two group games left to play.

Manchester United 3, Braga 1

Javier Hernandez, Wayne Rooney and substitute Robin van Persie scored late goals as Manchester United rallied for the win in Braga, Portugal, putting the English team into the next round of the Champions League.

Manchester United’s standout strikers teamed up in the last 10 minutes to put the Red Devils into the knockout phase with two games to spare after they went out last season in the group stage.

But it was the second time in two weeks United had to fight back after Braga took the lead, and the Premier League leader looked tame and far below the form of a contender for the European crown. Braga is making just its second appearance in the competition.

Hernandez tapped in from short range in injury time after Rooney scored from the penalty spot in the 84th following Nuno Coelho’s tackle.

Van Persie had equalized on the break against the run of play, hitting a left-foot lob over Braga goalkeeper Beto for his third goal in four games in the tournament.

Ferguson, who on Tuesday marked 26 years at the team’s helm, had said he would use more experienced players in the tournament this season. He picked Ryan Giggs in his starting lineup, but he left out Rio Ferdinand, who turned 34 on match day. Fast-paced Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez were in attack while in-form striker Van Persie started on the bench.

For most of the game Braga was the most dangerous team, and the 49th-minute penalty from Alan — who got both of Braga’s goals in its 3-2 loss at Old Trafford two weeks ago — gave the home team a deserved lead after Jonny Evans bodychecked Custodio as the midfielder burst into the visitor’s area.

The game was suspended for about 10 minutes in the second half because of a floodlight failure.

Galatasary 3, Cluj 1

Galatasaray won its first away Champions League match in 10 years by beating CFR Cluj 3-1 in Romania thanks to a hat trick by Burat Yilmaz on Wednesday.

Yilmaz beat goalkeeper Mario Felgueiras with a header from 12 metres out in the 18th minute. His second goal came after a defensive error by Cluj’s defence in the 62nd, finishing with his right foot after being set up by Hamit Altintop. The striker finished the scoring with a nine-meter shot in the 74th.

Cluj winger Modou Sougou had earlier made it 1-1 with a 53rd-minute goal from a shot that hit the crossbar and went into the net.

Galatasaray is second in Group H on goal difference from Cluj with both teams on four points, eight behind Manchester United.

Chelsea 3, Shakhtar Donetsk 2

Victor Moses headed home the winner four minutes into injury time to earn Chelsea a 3-2 victory in London, allowing the holders to move level on points with the Ukrainian side in Group E.

Outplayed for large periods, Chelsea twice surrendered the lead in a frenetic match at Stamford Bridge, with Willian scoring both of Shakhtar’s goals in the ninth and 47th minutes to enhance his burgeoning reputation.

Fernando Torres had scored Chelsea’s opener in the sixth and Oscar had reclaimed the lead for the hosts in the 40th with a stunning 45-yard shot, with goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov to blame for both goals after botching attempted clearances.

Moses had the last laugh as Chelsea finished strongly, the substitute heading in Mata’s cross with almost the last touch of the game. Shakhtar is only ahead on goal difference now, with Juventus a point behind.

Without Moses’ late goal, Chelsea would have been in a dire position, third in the group and needing a good result at Juventus in two weeks to avoid becoming the first reigning champion to go out in the group stage. Now the situation looks a lot healthier.

It was Shakhtar’s first loss in 38 games — spanning 12 months — but the visitors will wonder how they didn’t claim a win that would have seen them qualify with two matches left.

Chelsea couldn’t live with the visitors’ pace, movement and range of passing, especially down its exposed left flank — but survived because of Pyatov’s dreadful mistakes.

Juventus 4, Nordsjaelland 0

Juventus bounced back from its first Serie A loss in two seasons with a comfortable win in Turin over the Danish side to boost its chances of advancing in the Champions League.

Claudio Marchisio put the Italian champions ahead six minutes in, Arturo Vidal doubled the lead in the 23rd and Sebastian Giovinco added another for the hosts in the 37th. Substitute Fabio Quagliarella sealed the victory in the 75th.

Compared to the 1-1 draw between the clubs two weeks ago, this contest was completely one-sided, with Alessando Matri hitting the post for Juventus in the 26th.

Juventus has six points in Group E, while Nordsjaelland is last with one point.

On Saturday, Juve’s 49-match winning run in Serie A ended with a 3-1 home loss to Inter Milan.

Bayern Munich 6, Lille 1

Claudio Pizarro scored a hat trick in Munich as the German side thrashed Lille to keep the French club without a point in the Champions League.

Bastain Schweinsteiger and Arjen Robben scored with free kicks as Bayern romped to a five-goal lead at halftime against overmatched Lille.

Lille forward Salomom Kalou cut the deficit after the break, before Toni Kroos completed the emphatic win for Bayern.

Bayern has nine points in Group F. Valencia also has nine points and leads the group on goal difference after winning 4-2 against BATE Borisov, which has six points.

Valencia 4, BATE Borisov 2

Midfielder Sofiane Feghouli scored twice Wednesday to help Valencia beat BATE Borisov 4-2 at home in Spain and take the lead in Group F in the Champions League.

Valencia jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the 51st minute and then held off a comeback attempt by Belarusian club, which had surprisingly topped the group after three rounds.

Jonas gave the hosts the lead in the 27th minute when he controlled a cross from Tino Costa and beat BATE goalkeeper Andrei Gorbunov. Roberto Soldado doubled the lead with a penalty two minutes later, and Feghouli hit Valenica’s third after deftly controlling Fernando Gago’s pass.

Midfielder Renan Bressan pulled one back for BATE two minutes later and Dmitri Mozolevski made it 3-2 in the 83rd. But Feghouli made the game safe with his second goal in the 86th.
