(PhatzRadio / The Sports Xchange) — Two NL East division teams announced their Opening Day starters on Thursday.

The named veteran right-hander Tim Hudson to start the opener, scheduled for April 1 against the .

Hudson, 37, posted a 3.62 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 179 innings last season. He will head a rotation that includes , Kris Medlen, Mike Minor and .

Meanwhile, starter will open the season on the disabled list, manager Terry Collins said. Collins then officially named left-hander Jon Niese to start Opening Day.

Santana hasn’t appeared in a game this spring as he continues to build . Niese, 26, posted a 3.40 ERA in 30 starts last season. This will be his first career opening day assignment.

–Los Angeles will have surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb, and is expected to be out about eight weeks. Ramirez was injured diving for a ball in the championship game of the World Classic, when his Dominican Republic team defeated Puerto Rico 3-0.

Ramirez batted .271 with 10 homers and 44 RBI in 64 with the Dodgers last season after being acquired in a trade with the .

–Hard-throwing left-hander Aroldis Chapman is headed back to the bullpen, according to a Cincinnati Enquirer report.

Reds GM said that no decision has been made on Chapman’s role for 2013.

Chapman, 25, had been starting this spring, but he struggled with his command. Though he started 16 times in the minors, he’s been a reliever exclusively since coming to the majors.

–The San Francisco Giants have begun discussions on a long-term contract with franchise catcher , according to multiple reports.

The reigning National League Most Valuable Player will earn $8 million in 2013 in his first year of arbitration eligibility. A super-two player, the 25-year-old will head to arbitration three more times.

A new deal could simply buy out those three seasons, as well as add years to delay his potential free agency.

–Free agent Kyle Lohse won’t wait until after the June amateur draft to sign a contract, agent Scott Boras told MLB Network.

The market for the pitcher has been limited because teams have been reluctant to surrender a first- or second-round draft pick as compensation, but that stipulation will no longer apply if Lohse signs after the June amateur draft. Boras insists that Lohse will sign before that point.

–Cleveland Indians top pitching prospect Trevor Bauer was among three pitchers optioned to Triple-A Columbus.

The 22-year-old righty allowed 13 runs — 11 earned — in 16 1/3 Cactus League innings. Left-hander Scott Barnes and righty Corey Kluber were also shipped to Columbus.

–Former shortstop Edgar Renteria announced his retirement after 16 major league seasons.

The 36-year-old held a press conference in Colombia to make his decision official. He batted .286 with 140 home runs for the Florida Marlins, , Boston Red Sox, Braves, Detroit Tigers, Giants and Reds, and was named to five All-Star teams.

Renteria’s final season came in 2011, when he batted .251 in 299 at-bats for Cincinnati.

Mets 101 News and Notes: Could Johan Santana Be Done for the Season?

help Mets 101 News and Notes: Could Johan Santana Be Done for the Season?
santana 4 Mets 101 News and Notes: Could Johan Santana Be Done for the Season?

As the continue their slow march to the end of the regular season, one troubling trend that can’t be ignored is the sudden decline of Mets starter Johan Santana. Santana, who delivered what looks to be the apex of the 2012 season with his no hitter on June 1st, has fallen into a tailspin since that game. Santana’s ERA since his no hitter is well over 15 and he has hit the disabled list once with a sprained ankle. Rumors have also been swirling that Santana’s arm is fatigued after a grueling first season back from shoulder surgery. The latest on the Mets ace and a lot more will be the focus of this week’s Mets 101 News and Notes. Let’s get started with:

Undergoes MRI on Back:

Johan Santana underwent an MRI on his back yesterday and the results will not be known until later today, ESPN New York’s Adam Rubin reports. Santana’s balky back appears to be the latest issue troubling the , who has not looked the same since he threw his no-hitter back in June. Santana’s start tomorrow appears to be in doubt, so the team has added Collin McHugh to the taxi squad for today’s game. McHugh would be activated to the regular roster tomorrow if Santana cannot go. While McHugh could start for Santana tomorrow, the team is still sending out mixed signals about whether Santana will pitch at all for the remainder of the season. Manager Terry Collins has indicated that Santana would be on a strict pitch count of about 75-80 pitches if he takes the hill for the remainder of the season, but with so little to gain in this season you have to wonder whether it is worth risking further injury to send Santana out for a few short starts. This story is far from over, and we will keep you up to date on it here at Mets 101.

Terry Collins Holds Closed Door Meeting:

The Mets lost last night to the 6-2, marking their 12th loss in the last 14 they’ve played at Citi Field. After the game Terry Collins held a closed door meeting with the team to address a perceived lack of effort down the stretch, ESPN New York’s Andrew Marchand reports. Collins called the meeting after the team fell to nine games below .500 for the year and used the meeting to deliver a message about the current perception surrounding the struggling ball club. The Mets, who have gone 11-26 since the All Star Break, have faded out of contention and into irrelevance with the slide and some fans and reporters have wondered if the team has packed it in. Collins addressed the topic after the game by stating:

We have not packed it in. But, as I told our guys, ‘perception is reality’. And when you sit on the outside and watch a game like tonight, perception is, ‘they’ve packed it in’. And I won’t stand for it. I believe in accountability. I believe in how you play the game right. I’m the manager here and you have a game like that, where it looks like they are not prepared, that’s my fault.

The Mets have stumbled down the stretch for six straight seasons, so it remains to be seen if this meeting will break up the malaise that has surrounded this club following the All Star Break.

Jenrry Mejia and Jeurys Familia Could Both Join Mets in September:

As August creeps to a close and September approaches, the Mets have begun to think about who they will promote to the big club when rosters expand to 40 players on September 1st. Two names to watch for could be Jenrry Mejia and Jeurys Familia, Adam Rosenbloom of MLB.com reports. Mejia has been mentioned as a potential rotation candidate in September should Santana be shut down for the season. Mejia was switched from the bullpen back to the rotation around the All Star Break and has thrived in the rotation for Buffalo, compiling a 2-1 record with a 1.05 ERA as a starter for the Bisons. Familia could join the major league bullpen in order to get a cup of coffee with the big club. Familia is 8-8 with a 4.65 ERA for the Bisons this season, and he has the flexibility to contribute to the big league club in either the rotation or the bullpen.

Mets Will Use Innings Caps for Young and Injured Pitchers:

One of the most controversial topics in is the idea of an innings limit on developing pitchers. The idea has gained major attention this season following the ’ declaration that ace Stephen Strasburg would be shut down at around 180 innings even though the franchise can bring playoff baseball to the nation’s capital for the first time since 1933. The New York Mets face similar concerns on innings limits with some of their young pitchers, but the fact that the team is out of the playoff race will make enforcing those limits a lot easier. While much of the innings debate with the Mets has focused on protecting Santana and Chris Young, Andrew Keh of the New York Times reports that the Mets plan to implement innings limit on the team’s two top young pitchers, Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler. Wheeler, who has thrown 137 innings between Binghamton and Buffalo this season, should be shut down for the year after he reaches about 150 innings pitched. That would put him in position to throw about 180-190 innings next season as he pushes for a spot in the major league rotation. Harvey has thrown 140 innings between Buffalo and the Mets this season, and GM Sandy Alderson confirmed that Harvey will be shut down when he reaches 170 innings pitched. Harvey’s shut down is probably a wise decision for the club as pushing young pitchers when the team has nothing to play for is very risky. Harvey’s shutdown, which should occur around the middle of September, will also allow Collins and team management to insert a young starter such as Familia, Mejia, or McHugh into the rotation to see how they fare against major league hitting.

King for a Day, Perfect Forever
Felix Hernandez Throws a Perfect Game

completed the first perfect game in the history of the Seattle Mariners Wednesday. It is the 23rd in MLB history but what may be even more impressive is the fact he had to be perfect as his M’s only scored one run. The lone run came on an RBI single off the bat of catcher Jesus Montero who was hitting in the three hole as the DH on Wednesday.Hernandez, who is 26 years old in his 8th major league season, threw 113 pitches (77 strikes) and accumulated 12 strikeouts in Wednesday’s gem. The Venezuelan Ace never gets the credit he deserves playing in Seattle which is predominately a football city (Home of the 12th Man) but he did win the 2010 Cy Young award despite having a 13-12 record. King Felix is now 11-5 on the season with a 2.60 ERA. His 174 strikeouts is tied for second most in the Majors with Detroit’s Justin Verlander. Max Scherzer is the current leader with 178 K’s. Hernandez’s 2.60 ERA is tied for the 6th lowest in baseball with Chicago’s Chris Sale and after today’s start Felix leads the league with 180 innings pitched. Do not be surprised if the Mariners skip his next start to keep him healthy long term as they currently sit 14 behind the Texas Rangers with a 55-64 record.

It may be easy to move Hernandez into our top 2 starters at this point in the season but let’s take a look at what’s happened to other pitchers after their perfect games and no hitters earlier this year…

Since Matt Cain‘s perfect game on June 13th…
He is 3-3 in 10 starts
He was 8-3 in his first 13 starts
His ERA increased from 2.18 to 2.99
Not bad numbers but a clear fall offSince Johan Santana‘s no hitter on June 1st…
He is 3-6 in 9 starts
He was 3-2 in his first 11 starts
His ERA increased from 2.38 to 4.58
He also had 5 starts where he gave up at least 6 runs
Spent time on the DLSince Phil Humber’s perfect game on April 21st…
He is 4-5 and pitching out of the Bullpen
His current ERA sits at 5.87
Also spent time on the DL
Will King Felix take a turn for the worse after his Perfect Game? Let me know what you think on Twitter @Awies28

Since Jered Weaver‘s no hitter on May 2nd…
His numbers didn’t take a major hit but he only threw 89 pitches the next start and in his 2nd start after the no no he gave up 8 runs (77 pitches). 16 days after that he landed on the DL with a lower back injury. Weaver is still my AL Cy Young front runner but King Felix took a major step forward this afternoon.

In terms of fantasy value I still have Hernandez as a guaranteed top 7 starter but I still have concerns with his offense moving forward and his high innings count through 25 starts. I’ll have King Felix in the same company as David Price, Cole Hamels, and who sit just outside my top 2 Aces Verlander and Kershaw. I don’t think Kershaw and Verlander will budge from the 1, 2 spots for the rest of the year.

On a side note, this is the third time in the last four years that the have had a perfect game thrown against them (Dallas Braden in 2010 and Mark Buehrle in 2009). Don’t forget the Edwin Jackson 149 pitch no hitter on June 25th, 2010.

CARDINALS 4, PHILLIES 1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — hit a three-run homer and won his fifth straight start, leading St. Louis to a victory over the Phillies.

Cliff Lee (2-7) retired 12 straight before the Cardinals tagged him for consecutive hits to open the sixth inning. Holliday followed with a shot to right for his 22nd homer of the season.

He remained winless at home this year.

The World Series champion Cardinals are in the thick of the wild-card hunt and Westbrook gave them a needed 7 2-3 strong innings. Westbrook (12-8) allowed four hits, walked two and struck out three.

MARLINS 7, DODGERS 3

MIAMI (AP) — Carlos Lee hit one of the Marlins’ season-high five doubles and drove in two runs, leading Miami to a win over the Dodgers.

Ricky Nolasco (9-11) allowed two runs and nine hits in five innings for Miami.

Matt Kemp had three hits, stole two bases, and drove in a run for the Dodgers.

Dodgers starter Joe Blanton (8-10) allowed just one hit through four innings before running into trouble in the fifth.

GIANTS 9, ROCKIES 3

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Buster Posey hit a home run and drove in two runs to back Matt Cain’s seven solid innings and the Giants beat Colorado.

Cain (11-5) gave up two runs on seven hits in 7 1-3 innings, and added an RBI single, to win for the first time since July 15. He walked one and struck out six. Angel Pagan hit a two-run triple, and Marco Scutaro, Hunter Pence and Joaquin Arias also drove in runs for the Giants.

D.J. LeMahieu hit his first major league home run or the Rockies, who had won three of four.

Drew Pomeranz (1-7) gave up four runs on five hits over four innings to remain winless (0-4) over his last six starts.

REDS 4, CUBS 2

CHICAGO (AP) — Ryan Ludwick hit a two-run double in the eighth inning and Cincinnati rallied to a win over the Cubs.

After Drew Stubbs doubled and Brandon Phillips singled off Cubs reliever James Russell (5-1), Ludwick looped a pitch down the left-field line and into the corner.

The comeback made a winner of Bronson Arroyo (8-7), who held the Cubs to two runs and five hits over eight innings.

Reds closer Aroldis Chapman continued his recent dominance by setting down three straight in the ninth and converting his 27th save, including his last 19 straight.

ASTROS 6, BREWERS 5, 10 INNINGS

HOUSTON (AP) — Scott Moore hit an RBI single with none out in the bottom of the 10th inning, lifting the Astros to a victory over the Brewers.

Jose Altuve led off the 10th with an infield single off Jim Henderson (0-1). Marwin Gonzalez and Steve Pearce followed with walks to load the bases before Moore singled, giving Houston consecutive wins for the first time since June 26-27.

The Astros won in their final at-bat for the second .

Milwaukee rallied three times to tie the game, sending it to extras on Jean Segura’s RBI groundout in the ninth inning. Rickie Weeks led off the ninth with a double off Wilton Lopez (5-1).

NATIONALS 6, DIAMONDBACKS 5

PHOENIX (AP) — Ryan Zimmerman singled in two of Washington’s five runs in the fifth inning, and the Nationals rallied to beat the sloppy Diamondbacks, stretching their season-best winning streak to eight games.

Jason Werth and Michael Morse each had an RBI double in Washington’s big inning, which was aided by two Arizona errors and a wild pitch from Diamondbacks starter (12-8).

Aaron Hill homered and Justin Upton doubled twice for the Diamondbacks, losers of the first two of the series and six of eight overall.

Edwin Jackson (7-7) got the win despite giving up five runs and eight hits in 5 2-3 innings.

Mets 101 News and Notes: Jason Bay is Here to Stay

Jason Bay Mets 101 News and Notes: Jason Bay is Here to Stay

As the New York Mets returned home, one of the big questions surrounding the team was the future of outfielder Jason Bay. General Manager Sandy Alderson had hinted before the team’s road trip that Bay would get an 11 game opportunity to show where he fit into the team’s plans for the remainder of this season and beyond. When Bay disappointed on the trip, many began to wonder about the future of the beleagured outfielder. The answer to Bay’s fate and much more will be revealed in this week’s edition of Mets 101 News and Notes. Let’s start with:

Bay To Stay:

will be remaining with the Mets, MetsBlog.com reports. GM Sandy Alderson told ESPN New York’s Andrew Marchand that Bay is not going anywhere for the foreseeable future, and that he does not feel that it is necessary to buy out Bay’s contract at this time. Speculation was rampant that Alderson, who had bought out the contracts of Luis Castillo and Oliver Perez last season, could buy out Bay’s deal to give him and the club an opportunity to start fresh. Bay will stay because, according to manager Terry Collins, he is a professional and is doing everything he can to help the ball club. The manager did acknowledge that Bay is a platoon player as of now who will play primarily against left handed pitching and against certain right handed pitchers. Bay’s status could change by the end of the season, so stay tuned.

Bad News for Byrdak:

Mets Tim Byrdak received some bad news over the weekend. The left hander’s season is over after he was diagnosed with a torn anterior capsule in his left shoulder, Mike Vorkunov of the Newark Star-Ledger reports. The injury is the same one that kept both Johan Santana and Chris Young out of action for the 2011 season, and it remains to be seen whether Byrdak will choose to resume his career or retire. Manager Terry Collins admitted that injuries like Byrdak’s can result from overuse, and his workload was extreme for the last two seasons. The Mets replaced Byrdak in the bullpen by recalling lefty Garrett Olson from Triple-A Buffalo. Elvin Ramirez was demoted back to the Bisons to make room for Olson, who was added to the 40 man roster after Dillon Gee was transferred to the 60 day disabled list.

All Star Logo Unveiled:

As the Mets continue to prepare for the 2013 All Star Game at Citi Field, the organization took the opportunity yesterday to unveil the game’s official logo. The logo was unveiled at a press conference yesterday attended by current players David Wright, R.A. Dickey, and manager Terry Collins. Former Mets All Stars John Franco, Keith Hernandez, Ron Darling, and Dwight Gooden were also in attendance. Wright took the podium before the logo was unveiled and jokingly referenced the fences being moved in as an asset if he or one of his teammates were to compete in the Home Run Derby next summer. The logo, which can be seen in this link from the Mets, strongly resembles the team’s current logo.

National League Potential Stars

NL East

Giancarlo Stanton- Just ask Alex on which list Stanton will end up after his career. He thinks that Giancarlo is destined to break Barry Bonds single season home run record (*). I don’t think so. But he is, and will continue to be a force for many years to come. The 22-year-old right fielder already has 75 round-trippers. His average seems to be creeping up to more respectable numbers, which shows he’s not just an all-or-nothing swinger. His 33 walks aren’t awful, either. He has even chipped in with 5 stolen bases. In such a big park, Stanton will still not have a problem finding the cheap seats.

Freddie Freeman- This young man, also 22, put up great numbers in his rookie campaign in 2011, with a .282 average, 21 home runs and 76 RBI’s. This season, he is on pace for similiar numbers. He’ll have to improve on his 74 punchouts, but he could be a top 5 first baseman of his time if he keeps this up. He can also do the splits.

Jordan Zimmerman- If it weren’t for a certain pitcher named Stephen, this young man would be the ace of the Nationals staff. He has incredible stuff, and the stats don’t lie. His ERA is 2.35 and he has amassed 84 strikeouts so far. He has grown up on a couple of bad Washington teams, but this year it seems the Nationals are putting it all together and going for the division (I still have the Braves winning the NL East, especially if they trade for Ryan Dempster).

Danny Espinosa- Espinosa is quickly becoming one of my favorite players. He has struggled to keep his batting average near respectable for most of the season, but he is violently making a push for the .275 range. 8 home runs and 30 RBI’s are definitely acceptable for a second baseman, although rumors say he will switch to his natural shortstop position while Ian Desmond is on the DL. Man, does he strike out way too much, though. He already has 103 K’s on the season. But he is still young and I think he will figure things out.

Jon Neise- This crafty lefty has had his ups and downs this season, but I like him moving forward. He has the ability to strike out hitters (102 in 117.2 IP) and his WHIP is a pretty good 1.17. He has given up 17 home runs so far, but he will learn how to approach hitters better with more experience. He will fit nicely in a future rotation of Johan Santana, Mike Pelfrey, Matt Harvey and Zack Wheeler.

NL Central

Starlin Castro- I have backed off of Castro a little bit because of his lack of focus, and making bad decisions. But the kid can do it all. His .282 average is a little down from what we have come to expect. He will be right around .300, over that if you ask me, when the season comes to an end. His 9 home runs show a lot of promise for future power numbers. He has also stolen 16 bases. He is the centerpiece of this future Cubs team, and a key to their success. Should be a top 10 shortstop of his time.
Castro should be a fixture on the North Side for years to come

Jose Tabata- I know his stats aren’t up to par, but I really like the potential of Tabata. He has been back and forth between Triple-A and the big club, and there is a lot of room to go. What I like most about this young outfielder is the fact that he doesn’t strike out much. He has only 43 strikeouts in 72 . I think he will improve with the stick, and he definitely has great defense. I’m not worried about Tabata right now. He will be a very productive player for this scrappy Pirates bunch.

Jose Altuve- This 22-year-old will end his career with an average above .300. He is so physically gifted with hittin line drives and finding gaps. I don’t think he will ever hit for much power. He might hit a lot of doubles, but his home runs with never go above 12 or 13. He will always be a great stolen base condidate. And his defense is very solid. I see him as the lead off hitter for the Astros the next time they contend.

Mike Fiers- This 27-year-old got a little more seasoning in the minors before being called up late last year. However, in his first full season he has a 1.96 ERA. He has 58 strikeouts in just 59.2 IP. He has outpitched 2011 free agent signees Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcom so far this year. With Greinke rumored to possibly be on his way out of town, I like Friers to step in and do great things with this Milwaukee team that is struggling to find positives right now.

Aroldis Chapman- I know this is the “safe pick”, but I’m picking Chapman with his potential as a starter. The electric stuff is well-documented. We all check the radar gun in the stadium after each pitch. I get that. But I think if the Reds decided to stretch him out and make him a starter, it could pay huge dividends. With his 86 strikeouts in only 45.2 innings pitched, it’s obvious he is tough to hit of off. Why not let him take a few miles-per-hour off the fastball and pitch 6 or 7 innings every 5 days? He’ll still hit 96 or higher on the gun. And with his delivery and all his body parts flying everywhere, he could really throw some quality innings for a championship-caliber Reds squad.

Chapman has 86 strikeouts in 45.2 innings this year

NL West

Madison Baumgarner- With all the talk this offseason about Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum, this 22-year-old lefty sort’ve fell through the cracks. I’ve been high on this guy ever since his call-up as a 20-year-old. He has everything you want in a pitcher: size, durability, and stuff. His sparkling 3.12 ERA backs me up here. He has the ability to get the strikeout when needed (112). And his 25 walks are very impressive, given most young lefties have trouble finding the zone. I think it’s safe to say that at his young age, he is a complete package for the pitch-happy Giants.

Paul Goldschmidt- Goldschmidt had incredible power numbers before his call-up, and he is definitely going to hit a lot of home runs in the big leagues. But his ability to hit for average (.297) is going to make him an even bigger asset for a Diamondbacks club that has plenty of pop in their order. This big guy already has 29 doubles and even 9 stolen bags to go along with his 13 HR and 46 RBI. He’s only 24, an will hit even more home runs when he adds weight to his 6’3″ frame.

Wade Miley- I’m staying in Phoenix, Arizona with this pick. He is my pick for so far. His 11 wins are tied for 11th (ironically) in the Majors. His 3.02 ERA is pretty solid on a team that I think will eventually win the NL West. The guy has 110 strikeouts this season. There aren’t many better lefties in the game than Miley already. He will only continue to mature and become a possible ace on a staff full of talent.

Dexter Fowler- As much as I wanted to go with Josh Rutledge, I don’t think he will be in the majors, with the Rockies at least, once star Troy Tulowiztki returns from injury. I have always liked Dexter Fowler’s defense. He has elite speed and he’s just a solid athlete at 6’4″, 190 lbs. He is finally starting to hit, and hit well. He sports a .301 average going into Tuesday night. His 12 home runs from a defenseive position are only icing on the cake. Fowler only has 8 steals, which is kind’ve disappointing. But overall, I love this guy going forward. He has the chance to be a top 5 centerfielder eventually.

Yasmani Grandal- Grandal came over to the Padres in the Mat Latos deal with Cincinatti. This guy can really swing the stick. He has a career .314 average in the minors. He got called up this year in San Diego and has continued to hit well (.299). I would like to think he would hit for more power than this (4 doubles, 5 home runs), but he is still only 23. I think he is up to the Majors to stay.

Is the No-Hitter Becoming Less Impressive?

help Is the No Hitter Becoming Less Impressive?
santana 1 Is the No Hitter Becoming Less Impressive?

Matt Cain pitched the first perfect game in San Francisco Giants history last night. His 14-strikeout performance was probably the most dominant this year. We saw a similar dominant performance 3,000 miles east, as R.A. Dickey stifled Tampa Bay by allowing only 1 hit (a questionable one), during a 9-1 victory that include 12 K’s of his own. Both these performances come after the Mariners combined to no-hit the Dodgers on Friday, and Johan Santana pitched a no-no against St. Louis, one of the best offensive teams in the league, two weeks ago. With the harsher penalties for PED use, are we seeing the no-hitter become less of a feat? Were the no-hitter thrown during the “steroid era” that much more impressive?

Tom Tango of Inside the Book broke down “ eras” earlier this week:

(The Pioneer Era), 1871-1892

(The Spitball Era), 1893-1919

(The Landis Era), 1920-1946

(The Baby Boomers Era), 1947-1968

(The Artificial Turf Era), 1969-1992

(The Camden Yards Era), 1993-2012

Tango rates the eras on runs shifts, home runs, BABIP and runs per game. Regardless of one’s system, Tango’s final result is pretty much how all of us would breakdown baseball history.

Back to the no-hitters. Here is a breakdown of complete game no-no’s (I took the combined versions out) since 1947. I picked ’47 since I wanted to do the evaluation post-integration.

1947-68 – (52)

1969-1992- (64)

1993-2012 – (42)

There is probably going to be some argument of when the “steroid era” started, but out of the 42 no-hitters since 1993, 16 have come since the Mitchell Report was released.

Anyone who looks at runs per game knows the insanity of scoring from 1998 onword. Only 4 no-hitters were thrown during that late 90s three-year period (98-2000), or the same amount of no-no’s this year.

Would you put David Cone‘s perfect game ahead of Cain’s? How about Hideo Nomo shutting down the Rockies in Colorado!

I believe the no-hitters thrown between 1992-and 2007 are some of the most impressive feats. Yes, the pitchers could have been “enhanced,” but the combination of small ballparks, PEDs (especially amphetamines), gives me reason to believe the hitters benefited more. Remember, amphetamines were part of baseball since it’s inception, so it was an issue “pre-steroid era.”

With expansion watering down the talent pool, specialized relievers and travel putting a strain on amphetamine-less players, it’s probably easier to mow down a big league lineup than at any point in the game’s history.

Here is the list of every complete game no-hitter since 1947- discuss.
