NEW YORK (AP) — Revis Island is relocating to Tampa Bay.

The made a to fix the NFL’s worst pass defense Sunday, acquiring star cornerback Darrelle Revis from the in exchange for the 13th overall pick in this year’s draft and another selection next year.

“We’re thrilled. It’s rare that you get a chance to add a player of this to your . That’s what motivated us,” general manager Mark said, adding he would withhold further comment until a conference at the team’s training facility.

The Bucs announced the deal Sunday, saying Revis agreed to a new six-year contract. Revis’ agents Neil Schwartz and Jon Feinsod confirmed the deal is worth $96 million, with no guaranteed money, but makes him one of the highest-paid defensive players in the NFL. It includes $1.5 million annually in both roster and workout bonuses.

The Jets also receive a conditional fourth-round pick in next year’s draft that will become a third- if Revis, who is coming off a in his left knee, is on the Buccaneers’ roster on the of the 2014 league year.

“I been sitting around for the last hour trying to figure out what to say to the Jet Nation & I came up with this,” Revis wrote on Twitter. “The six years I played for the New York Jets were unbelievable. I put my body on the line everyday & did everything could to help the team win. I experienced a lot & & learned a lot. The memories I had in New York I will keep dearly to my heart.

“I want to thank all the jets fans for making me feel welcome.”

The trade was completed about two hours after Revis arrived in Tampa by private jet to take a physical for the Bucs, who wanted to check out his surgically repaired knee.

Tampa Bay Schiano drove his car onto the to meet the plane, greeted Revis and whisked the cornerback away to One Buccaneer Place. Soon after, the front page of the Buccaneers’ official website posted a big picture of Revis in what appears to be a Tampa Bay jersey with the words: “Treasure Island. Darrelle Revis (CB). It’s a Bucs Life.”

Tampa Bay opens the season at – that’s right – the Jets.

Trade talk had been swirling for months involving Revis, with the Bucs thought all along to be the most serious suitor. In addition to having a leaky secondary, Tampa Bay was more than $32 million under the salary cap before landing a player generally regarded as the best cornerback in .

New Jets general manager John Idzik said during a conference call that New York wasn’t proactively shopping Revis, but Tampa Bay made “sincere and sustained” interest. Idzik insisted Revis’ desire was to remain a member of the Jets and that the team shared that feeling, but “we ultimately came to the conclusion,” Idzik said, “that this was the best thing to do for the Jets at this time.”

Idzik added that there were several factors that went into the final decision to trade Revis, who coach Rex Ryan reiterated Sunday is “the best cornerback in football.” The main barriers included the Jets and Revis’ representatives being far apart on a long-term extension, the time factor with the NFL draft coming up and the “degree of uncertainty” regarding the cornerback’s health.

“Fitting a deal of historical proportions into our short-term and long-term plans is very difficult,” Idzik said.

Revis was New York’s first-round pick in 2007 after then-GM Mike Tannenbaum traded up to No. 14 to draft the former University of Pittsburgh star. Revis quickly established a reputation on the field as a shutdown cornerback, routinely holding wide receivers to quiet games and causing quarterbacks to shy away from his side of the field. He was considered by many to be so dominant at his position that he earned the nickname “Revis Island” for leaving opposing wide receivers stranded.

Ryan’s Jets currently have the ninth overall pick in the draft that starts Thursday, and now the 13th pick, so Idzik will be busy early in the first round.

The trade leaves Antonio Cromartie as the Jets’ top cornerback, a role he flourished in last season with Revis sidelined by a knee injury. And 2010 first-rounder Kyle Wilson mostly likely would be stepping in as the other starter.

“We’re a football team that has a No. 1 corner,” said Ryan, who said he and Idzik have been “joined at the hip” and he was involved in the decision-making process. “We’re fortunate to have Antonio Cromartie.”

The Jets could also target a cornerback – perhaps Alabama’s Dee Milliner or Florida State’s Xavier Rhodes – in the first round.

For the Bucs, adding Revis improves a secondary that already includes cornerback Eric Wright and safeties Mark Barron and recently signed Dashon Goldson, an All-Pro last season in San Francisco. Tampa Bay finished last in pass defense last season, coming within 38 yards of allowing the most yardage through the air in league history.

The 27-year-old Revis was entering the last season of his four-year contract signed in 2010, but was looking for a big payday that would make him one of the highest-paid defensive players in the league. A clause in that deal prevented the Jets from using the franchise or transition tag on him next year, so if he likely would have become a free agent in 2014.

As the Jets weighed whether to try to sign him to a contract extension, lose him to free agency next offseason or deal him for high draft picks, Revis was the subject of rampant trade rumors since last season ended.

“It became quite evident to us that there was a substantial difference between Darrelle’s view of his value and ours,” Idzik said. “We felt there would have to be a significant change on either side in order to create a path toward reaching an agreeable deal for either side.”

Complicating things was the fact Revis is coming off a serious injury. Revis tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee last September against Miami, and underwent surgery the next month.

“It definitely muddies the water a little bit,” Idzik said.

Revis has been rehabbing since, and has indicated in interviews he expects to be ready for the start of the regular season.

Against his former team.

With Revis’ contract status still in limbo, many predicted the two sides would have a repeat of the tough negotiations that marked previous discussions and led to two holdouts and nearly a third last summer. Instead, Idzik made a move with an eye on the franchise’s future and not going empty-handed by letting Revis walk as a free agent next offseason.

“We wanted to come up with a decision that was the best for the New York Jets,” owner Woody Johnson said. “And that’s the decision we arrived at. And I think it was the correct one.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Barry Larkin wants to keep ’s most exclusive club clean.

Inducted into the last summer after a 19-year career with the Cincinnati Reds, Larkin told The Associated Press in a phone interview Wednesday that players who cheat shouldn’t receive baseball’s highest individual honor.

“I think if you cheated, no, you don’t deserve it because I know how difficult it was for me to get there and how difficult it was for me just to compete on an everyday basis,” Larkin said. “I think if you cheated I think you made a decision and I don’t think you belong.”

Larkin was in New York to sign items that will be auctioned off as part of Steiner Sports’ 25th anniversary. All the proceeds of the will go to charities that are supporting families affected by Superstorm Sandy.

The 1995 NL MVP was speaking about a month ahead of the voting results for next year’s Hall class. Barry Bonds, and are all up for selection for the first time.

Ultimately, Larkin thinks the players who used performance enhancers will be kept out of Cooperstown just as Pete Rose has been denied admission because he is banned for life for gambling on the sport.

“I look at what has happened with Pete Rose. Pete Rose is not a Hall of Fame player, banned from baseball. But if you go up to the Hall of Fame all of his records, his bats, everything in is represented in the Hall of Fame — 4,256 (hits),” Larkin said. “I see a very similar thing happening with guys that are associated with or been accused of using steroids. I think they will recognize their accomplishments but I don’t think those players will be admitted to the Hall of Fame.”

Larkin spent nearly his entire career playing in the Steroids Era. And he doesn’t want to jump to conclusions about the stars he played against. The three-time Gold Glove shortstop would like to see baseball offer definitive guidance on who has done performance enhancers and who has not before admonishing them.

“There can’t be this hearsay. If you can prove it, then that’s what it is,” said Larkin, who will manage Brazil in March’s World Baseball Classic. “If you can’t prove it you’re innocent until proven guilty.”

These days, the 12-time All-Star discusses the dangers of steroid use with many of the young players he helps support through his Barry Larkin Charitable Foundation.

With a team in New Jersey, the Jersey City Reds, and two more on the way, one in Orlando — where he currently lives — and another in his hometown of Cincinnati, Larkin has ample opportunity to dissuade young athletes from using illegal substances.

“We talk about not cheating, we talk about shortcuts,” Larkin said. “These kids are impressionable. They’re very aware.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Cliff Pennington hit a go-ahead single in the after a key error by backup shortstop Eduardo Nunez and the Oakland Athletics bounced back to avoid a sweep, edging New York 5-4 Sunday and stopping the Yankees’ seven-game winning streak.

A day after their stunning 14-, the A’s held on to at least maintain their 2½-game lead for the second AL wild-card spot over the Angels, who played later.

The Yankees kept their one-game lead in the AL East because Baltimore lost in Boston. Despite the defeat, the Yankees have to like their chances to win the division — their final 10 games are against three teams with records below .500.

RED SOX 2, ORIOLES 1

BOSTON (AP) — doubled in the go-ahead run in the , escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth and the Red Sox ended Baltimore’s six-game winning streak.

The Orioles began the day one game behind the first-place in the AL East and two games ahead of Oakland for the top wild-card spot in the league.

Boston stopped its four-game losing streak after Dustin Pedroia led off the eighth with a double against (5-5) and Ross followed with his tiebreaking hit.

A double by helped Baltimore load the bases with one out in the ninth. But Bailey got Manny Machado on a forceout at home and struck out pinch-hitter Ryan Flaherty to finish it.

ANGELS 4, WHITE SOX 1

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — kept the Angels within in the AL wild-card chase, posting his league-leading 19th with a decision over the struggling White Sox.

The White Sox lost their fifth in a row and led Detroit by a half-game in the AL Central. The Tigers lost the opener of their day-night doubleheader against Minnesota.

Albert Pujols reached the 100-RBI mark for the 11th time in 12 big league seasons with a two-run double as the Angels remained 2½ games behind Oakland for the second wild-card spot.

Kendrys Morales hit a two-run homer that helped the Angels complete a three-game sweep.

Weaver (19-4) established a career high for wins.

TWINS 10, TIGERS 4 GAME 1

TWINS 2, TIGERS 1, 10 innings GAME 2

DETROIT (AP) — Jamey Carroll hit an RBI single in the 10th inning and the Twins beat Detroit, winning both games of a doubleheader to prevent the Tigers from at least tying the Chicago White Sox atop the AL Central.

Chicago still has a one-game lead in the division despite extending its losing streak to five with a 4-1 loss earlier in the day against the Los Angeles Angels.

Detroit closer Jose Valverde (3-4) allowed pinch-hitter Denard Span to lead off the extra inning with a single and gave up a one-out, fall-behind single to Carroll.

Jared Burton (2-1) got the win and Glen Perkins pitched a perfect 10th for his 14th save in 17 chances.

INDIANS 15, ROYALS 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Carlos Santana hit two homers and drove in five runs as the Indians routed Kansas City in their highest-scoring game of the season.

Santana connected for a two-run shot in the off Jake Odorizzi, who lost in his major league debut. Santana added his team-leading 18th homer, a three-run drive during a seven-run ninth.

The loss officially eliminated the Royals from playoff contention and assured them of another losing record. Kansas City has not made the postseason since winning the 1985 World Series, the longest active playoff drought in the majors.

RAYS 3, BLUE JAYS 0

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — hit his eighth home run in 14 games and Jeremy Hellickson won for the first time in more than a month to help the Rays beat the Blue Jays.

It was the fifth straight win for the Rays, who remained 3½ games behind the Oakland Athletics in the race for the AL’s second wild-card spot.

Hellickson (9-10) pitched 5 2-3 innings, giving up five hits and two walks while striking out six. The right-hander has given up only 16 runs in his last eight starts, but has won only two of them. Sunday marked his first win since Aug. 20.

Fernando Rodney pitched the ninth for his 44th save.

Upton’s 26th home run came in the first inning off Chad Jenkins, who was making his first major league start.

RANGERS 3, MARINERS 2

SEATTLE (AP) — allowed two runs and six hits over six-plus innings and Mike Napoli and Geovany Soto homered to lead the Rangers over the Mariners and preserve a four-game lead over the Oakland A’s in the AL West.

With Oakland’s 5-4 win over the New York Yankees earlier Sunday, the Rangers were looking to avoid a sweep by the scuffling Mariners in order to keep their distance over the Athletics with a pivotal four-game series against them beginning in Texas on Monday.

Solo homers by Eric Thames and Brendan Ryan off Dempster (12-7) in the seventh inning were the only blemishes to a strong outing. Dempster went 6 2-3 innings allowing one walk while striking out eight. Joe Nathan earned his 35th save.

The Rangers were again without Josh Hamilton, who has missed the last five games with a sinus issue that’s affected his vision.

(PhatzRadio / SI) — New York Yankees and his agent, Scott Boras, yesterday said there was no truth to rumors of Cano being suspended for performance-enhancing drugs.

A Major League with knowledge of the league’s drug testing backed up Cano’s denial, confirming to ’s Bob Nightengale that Cano did not test positive for a performance-enhancing substance.

“Not at all,” Cano told The . “There’s no test or anything.”

Cano’s agent, Scott Boras, told The News that the rumors were baseless. He said his office had traced the to a rumor that originated in the Dominican Republic, a reporter in the U.S. and a rival agent who has been saying that a prominent Latin player has been mired in ’s .

The Players Association notifies players who test positive for performance-enhancing drugs, and players then usually turn to their agents and other representatives to prepare an appeal.

“I have not been told anything about it,” Boras said.

Cano’s friendship with , suspended by MLB last month for testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs, led to speculation that Cano would also test positive. But Cano said he isn’t concerned about what other people say or think.

“You can’t control what people say,” Cano said. “There’s a lot of negative stuff out there and I can’t control that. I have to stay above that. There’s been the same thing for a long time. It’s something I can’t control.”

NEW YORK (AP) — David Price earned his league-leading 18th win with another superb performance against the New York Yankees, and the Tampa Bay Rays opened a key series against their AL East rival Friday night by taking advantage of a fading CC Sabathia and hanging on for a 6-4 .

The Rays began the day four games behind division co-leaders Baltimore and New York.

Out of the rotation since Sept. 2 because of a sore shoulder, Price (18-5) boosted his AL credentials with seven innings of two-run ball. Striking out six and giving up five hits, the lanky lefty got a big lift from an inadvertent deflection off an umpire and a fine play by .

Price improved to 7-3 against the Yankees. The Rays have won seven of the eight games he has matched up against Sabathia.

With Price out of the game, Alex Rodriguez hit his 647th homer, a two-run shot off in the eighth that sent him past for ninth place on the runs list with 1,889.

Derek Jeter, serving as the designated hitter for a second straight day because of an injured ankle, singled leading off the inning to wake up the fans silenced by Tampa Bay’s rally against Sabathia (13-6). Jeter had an infield single in the fifth to pass Willie Mays for 10th on the hits list with 3,284.

After a walk to , closer Fernando Rodney entered. The top reliever by ERA in the majors (0.68) struck out , threw a and walked pinch hitter . Curtis Granderson meekly grounded to end the threat. Rodney finished with a perfect ninth for his 43rd save in 45 chances.

ATHLETICS 3, ORIOLES 2

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Yoenis Cespedes hit a two-run homer while playing with a sore right wrist, and the AL wild card-leading Athletics beat Baltimore to prevent the Orioles from moving into sole possession of first place in the AL East.

Jonny Gomes hit a go-ahead RBI single in the fifth to back A’s rookie Tommy Milone (13-10) in the opener of a key series between playoff contenders. Oakland (83-61) received a clubhouse visit before the game from pitcher Brandon McCarthy, more than a week after he was struck in the head with a line drive and underwent surgery.

The Orioles (81-63) remained tied atop the division with the New York Yankees, who lost 6-4 at home to Tampa Bay.

WHITE SOX 6, TWINS 0

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Chris Sale threw six scoreless innings for his 17th after being rained out the night before, helping Chicago keep its one-game lead over Detroit in the AL Central.

Sale (17-6) scattered three singles and struck out five without a walk, cruising to his third win in three starts against Minnesota this year.

Sale was supposed to pitch Thursday night against Detroit, but that game was postponed until Monday.

Dayan Viciedo had two RBIs, Kevin Youkilis homered and Alex Rios doubled, scored and drove in a run for the White Sox, who played without injured slugger Adam Dunn for the seventh straight game.

Esmerling Vasquez (0-2) was the loser.

TIGERS 4, INDIANS 0

CLEVELAND (AP) — Justin Verlander pitched seven shutout innings and made sure Detroit stayed in step with first-place Chicago in the AL Central, leading the Tigers past Cleveland.

Coming through the way he almost always does, Verlander (14-8) allowed six hits. He escaped jams in the fifth and sixth innings with help from Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera, big men best known for their powerful bats, who made stellar defensive plays.

Detroit took a 4-0 lead after two innings against Corey Kluber (1-4)

The Indians, who were within 3 1/2 games of first place when they rallied to beat Verlander on July 26, are 16-44 since the All-Star break.

RANGERS 9, MARINERS 3

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Yu Darvish surpassed 200 strikeouts in his rookie season while getting his 15th victory and hit his 42nd home run for AL West-leading Texas.

Ian Kinsler hit his sixth leadoff homer this year for Texas, a ball initially ruled a double before umpires looked at the replay and correctly reversed that call.

There was no question about Hamilton’s long drive in the third off Hisashi Iwakuma (6-5), like Darvish a former Pacific League MVP in Japan and now a rookie in the major leagues.

Hunter is hitting .431 with 15 RBIs in his past 16 games.

Jordan Walden (3-2), the fourth of six Angels pitchers, picked up the victory, although he threw only two pitches. Ernesto Frieri got his 19th save in 21 opportunities.

Billy Butler, Mike Moustakas and Jeff Francoeur homered for Kansas City.
