Golf: Missing Medina putt could have wrecked career, says Kaymer

(Reuters) – Europe’s hero Martin Kaymer has a in which the five- he sank to beat on Medina’s 18th green slides agonizingly past the hole and his career spirals into decline.

The German’s victory over Stricker in September guaranteed Europe would retain the trophy after one of the most improbable in the history of the competition.

“Now I honestly feel like my whole career might have been on the line,” the former world number one who suffered an otherwise disappointing 2012, told Friday’s .

“I sometimes think about what would have happened if I had missed it. Would I have had the to recover from thinking I had let down a whole ?

“I had a similar putt to win my first major, the in 2010, but the feeling was completely different.

“If I had missed that one it would have been my own fault and I would have moved on to the next major.

“But letting down so many people? That doesn’t bear thinking about.”

Europe went into the final day trailing 10-6 and needed to win eight of the 12 points available in the singles matches to keep hold of the trophy.

Kaymer’s victory ensured Europe reached 14 points before ’s Francesco Molinari halved with to give Europe an outright victory.

After being dogged by poor form throughout the year, Kaymer ended in style in Sun City, , where he won his first title of 2012 at the .

He said the Ryder Cup victory had helped to turn things round.

“Up to that point (my season) hadn’t been good,” he said. “I would have given it three or four at best out of ten.

“Then, all of a sudden, you feel a lot happier about matters. On paper you’d probably still only give the year a three or four but mentally it had suddenly gone up a few marks.”

India’s inaugural F1 race: speeding past the poor

98066c588f03a316f71af446c81dbdab India’s inaugural F1 race: speeding past the poor

(Reuters) – India will hold its first Grand Prix this weekend – a glitzy coming-out party for an emerging economic juggernaut that is lost on villagers like Meera, standing by a fetid pond near the brand new Formula One race track with a covered in warts.

“What is this Formula One? I learnt only recently that some of our land was acquired for it,” said Meera, a mother of four who goes by one name. The of the $400 million F1 circuit that can hold 100,000 roaring spectators could be seen in the distance.

Seen by its supporters as an example of how India’s private companies can organize complex, hi-tech and global events, the Grand Prix has re-ignited India’s perennial questioning of how far the country should go down the globalization road.

For critics, it is an example of skewed economic growth, an elitist event where even the cheapest tickets are unaffordable for most people and an event that has no roots among India’s 1.2 billion people.

For the moment, that questioning is lost in a media frenzy.

Boosted by Lady Gaga, Bollywood and cricket stars, the Grand Prix may help India regain its after a scandal-plagued Commonwealth Games sparked headlines mocking the Asian power’s arrival on the world stage.

Run by Jaypee Sports International, a subsidiary of the Jaypee Group construction and infrastructure giant, the F1 event has come in on schedule with almost none of the cost overruns, corruption and shoddy construction that plagued the government-run Commonwealth Games last year.

“The world’s perception of India is going to change after the Grand Prix and people will forget what happened because of the Commonwealth Games,” Jaiprakash Gaur, founding chairman of the Jaypee Group, told local media.

BOOMING MARKETPLACE

The event is also just the latest example of international sports bodies ensuring they get a foot in this booming Asian marketplace with a huge advertising base of millions. India has already attracted the attention of top European football clubs.

Nevertheless, India is playing catch-up with its fellow emerging market rivals. China held a successful Olympics while will hold the next edition of the football – and Russia follows four years later. Brazil also has the 2016 Olympics.

But what price this sovereign branding game?

The extravagance of the event and questions about land seizures to make way for the circuit have sparked criticism. Critics have cited it as an example of misplaced priorities in a country where malnutrition rates rival sub-Sarahan Africa.

The cheapest tickets are about 2,500 rupees (about $50) – about half the monthly wage of a cleaner. The most expensive corporate boxes go for about $200,000 – and nearly all have been sold.

When the event was being planned in 2009, then-sports minister M.S. Gill dismissed it as “expensive .”

“In many ways it epitomizes what is wrong with this country,” said Paranjoy Guha Thakurta, a political commentator.

“One section of India would like to tell the rest of the world about how fast growing we are. Just come here and see the inequality and poverty on the ground and you get a reality check.”

Situated in western Uttar Pradesh state, about an hour’s drive from New Delhi, the Formula One track is connected by a new highway through the capital’s booming outskirts of anonymous office blocks and cement skeletons of soon-to-be-built colleges.

Within the circuit grounds, where shiny Mercedes Benz display cars are parked, poor Indian women used brushes and their hands to sweep dust and stones from an access road, their children playing nearby.

In nearby Salarpur village, Meera, who is illiterate and can only guess her age, held a sick child in her arms. He has suffered malaria twice. Rubbish lay in ponds of stagnant water. A young calf grazed on garbage.

“I don’t understand this concept of cars for entertainment,” she said. “People pay to watch this? Like a movie?”

Nearby, workers sprayed the manicured lawns around the F1 track with water in last minute preparations. Meera, who has electricity for four hours a day, must walk half an hour to the nearest water pump.

EXTREMES

For the moment, though, the media focus is on speed and glamour, and Force India, India’s first Formula One team, which has a slogan of “Raising The Flag.”

The 5.14 km (3.19 mile) track is touted to enable the F1 calendar’s second highest average speed after ’s Monza. Its 1.2 km straight is one of the longest in Formula One, aimed at encouraging high speeds and overtaking.

The grandstand, with seats colored in the Indian flag colors of saffron, white and green, features an undulating roof that can be seen from miles around.

There is much focus on the track itself, with safety concerns paramount after the deaths of a two-time winner and an Italian motorcyclist in races this month.

But a successfully held event would confirm what supporters hope will be an example of India finally showing what it is capable of.

“This comes after a bad year for India,” said V. Ravichandar, chairman of Feedback Consulting in Bangalore, which advises multinationals. He was referring to a string of corruption scandals that hit foreign investments into India amid growing instability of the Congress-led coalition government.

“To have an event that goes smoothly will show that the private sector is capable for pulling off events like this.”

But controversies may hang over the event even after a successful weekend.

The Grand Prix will take place in a state governed by a Dalit or “Untouchable” leader called Mayawati. She has raised a storm of criticism for building parks worth tens of millions of dollars in honor of her party. The state is one of the poorest and most corrupt in India.

Questions have been raised about why Mayawati granted organizers exemption from an entertainment tax. Several hundred farmers plan to protest what they say was the seizure of their land at rock bottom prices by the state government.

“This is just another way of India patting itself on the back and saying we have arrived in terms of size and growth.” said Suhel Seth, a popular marketing and management expert.

“Will investors get excited? No.”

Libyans: Food shortage, more violence by security forces in Tripoli

6189480bd3936a5b3855cc01498b3952 Libyans: Food shortage, more violence by security forces in Tripoli

(Phatforums) - This update is unconfirmed - information is sourced from social media groups.

The burning of the soldiers who did not want to shoot the protesters is unconfirmed yet, you must know that there are other people that would do such thing so that people think it's the president and more people go against him, I cannot say anything about that.

There were always small protesters against him, but now it's bigger.
Yes, was blocked 1 year ago (or 2 not sure sry) because many were flaming him on the videos showing him.

Facebook has been blocked 3-4 days ago, I still access it with a private proxy though, and is blocked too.

The internet is slow, and phone connections are hard to reach, but we all got a big bonus We got 10 credits in our phone!

I do not want to go on your radio station or whatever, I might get in trouble. I can get many images and videos (I already have some images like a dead body of a 50 cal sniper bullet shot through his head, I do not want to post it, it's very very strong and ugly).

I was also thinking to make a Libyan Facebook, but that might get me in trouble

UNCONFIRMED NEWS: People say that a meeting will be held, or is being now, that the high ranked government people offered the president the same payment as he is getting now, everything same, offering him FULL security in Libya, and his family, but just to leave his current position as a leader. It is an important meeting, but unconfirmed.

(Reuters) - Libya's Muammar Gaddafi used tanks, helicopters and warplanes to fight a growing revolt, witnesses said on Tuesday, as the veteran leader scoffed at reports he was fleeing after four decades in power.

The U.N. refugee agency urged to Libya's neighbors not to turn back those fleeing the violence, as hundreds of refugees streamed into Egypt on tractors and trucks, describing a wave of killing and banditry unleashed by the revolt.

In the eastern town of Al Bayda, resident Marai Al Mahry told Reuters by telephone that 26 people including his brother Ahmed had been shot dead overnight by Gaddafi loyalists.

"They shoot you just for walking on the street," he said, sobbing uncontrollably as he appealed for help.

Protesters were attacked with tanks and warplanes, he said.

"The only thing we can do now is not give up, no surrender, no going back. We will die anyways, whether we like it or not. It is clear that they don't care whether we live or not. This is genocide," said Mahry, 42.

In Tripoli, residents told Reuters there was no visible security force presence on the streets. The only police present were directing traffic, they said, the day after reports that warplanes had bombed portions of the capital and mercenaries had shot civilians.

Refugees fleeing into Egypt told of a wave of violence and crime.

"Five people died on the street where I live," Mohamed Jalaly, 40, told Reuters at Salum on his way to Cairo from Benghazi. "You leave Benghazi and then you have ... nothing but and youths with weapons," he added. "The way from Benghazi is extremely dangerous," he said.

Libyan guards have withdrawn from their side of the border and Egypt's new rulers -- who took power following the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak on February11 -- said the main crossing would be kept open round-the-clock to allow the sick and wounded to enter.

Libyan security forces have cracked down fiercely on demonstrators across the country, with fighting spreading to Tripoli after erupting in Libya's oil-producing east last week, in a reaction to decades of repression and following uprisings that have toppled leaders in Tunisia and Egypt.

Rights Watch says at least 233 people have been killed and opposition groups put the figure much higher but independent verification is impossible.

The revolt in OPEC member Libya has driven oil prices to a 2 1/2 year high above $108 a barrel.

As the fighting has intensified some supporters have abandoned Gaddafi. Tripoli's envoy to India, Ali al-Essawi, resigned and told Reuters that African mercenaries had been recruited to help put down protests.

"The fall of Gaddafi is the imperative of the people in streets," he said. The justice minister also quit and a group of army officers urged soldiers to "join the people." Two pilots flew their warplanes to nearby Malta.

DEFIANCE AND CONDEMNATION
Gaddafi's son Saif on Sunday vowed his father would keep fighting "until the last man standing" and the Libyan leader appeared on after days of seclusion to dismiss reports he had fled to the Venezuela of his ally Hugo Chavez.

"I want to show that I'm in Tripoli and not in Venezuela. Do not believe the channels belonging to stray dogs," said Gaddafi, who has ruled Libya with a mixture of populism and tight control since taking power in a military coup in 1969.

World powers have condemned the use of force against protesters, U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon accusing Libya of firing on civilians from warplanes and helicopters. The Security Council was to discuss Libya at 9 a.m. EST.

Washington and Europe have demanded an end to the violence and Germany's Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said: "A ruling family, threatening its people with civil war, has reached the end of the line."

Demonstrations spread to Tripoli from the second city Benghazi, cradle of the revolt that has engulfed a number of towns and which residents say is now in the hands of protestors.

Residents said anxious shoppers were queuing outside stores to try to stock up on food and drink. Some shops were closed.

In Tripoli, one resident said locals were patrolling their neighborhood at night to protect it from roaming mercenaries, reporting sniper and the use of military transport helicopters to ferry security forces about.

"Gaddafi obviously does not have any limits. We knew he was crazy, but it's still a terrible shock to see him turning mercenaries on his own people and just mowing down unarmed demonstrators," he told Lisa Goldman, a Canadian-Israeli journalist based in Tel Aviv.

ENERGY DISRUPTION

's Repsol suspended all operations in Libya and trade sources reported operations at Libyan oil ports had been disrupted due to the unrest. Others said gas supplies from Libya to had slowed since Late Monday but said they had not yet been interrupted.

Shell said it was pulling out its expatriate staff from Libya temporarily and a number of states were seeking to evacuate their nationals.

The upheavals which deposed the presidents of Tunisia and Egypt have shaken the Arab world and inspired protests across the Middle East and North Africa, threatening the grip of long-entrenched autocratic leaders.

A flamboyant figure with his flowing robes and bevy of female bodyguards, Gaddafi was famously branded a "mad dog" by one U.S. president and has long been accused by the West of links to and revolutionary movements.

But this changed when Libya renounced its weapons of mass destruction to secure an end to its international isolation and a rapprochement with western governments, keen to tap its oil and gas wealth and lucrative trade and investment deals.

6 Factors That Secretly Influence Who You Have Sex With

0928b365a9fda25eb86abcb6d10d00d8 6 Factors That Secretly Influence Who You Have Sex With

Statistics indicate that more and more frequently, “hookups” are turning into meaningful relationships. While that might sound like a snazzy pickup line, it actually means you might marry someone because of the color of the shirt she was wearing the night you met her. According to science, the world around you is dangerously full of hidden aphrodisiacs that can land you in bed, and even in long-term relationships, with someone who’s totally wrong for you.

#6.
Fear

The Romantic Notion:

“If two people are meant for one another, it doesn’t matter whether they meet in high school or prison — will find a way.”

Science Says:

“Did you see a comedy or a horror movie on your ? The answer to that can determine who you end up sleeping with more than any of the “important” factors you pay attention to.”

We tend to think that emotions such as fear and anger cause our hearts to speed up. According to the two-factor theory of emotion, it’s the other way around. When you meet a 15-foot-tall grizzly bear in the woods, your body doesn’t have time to ask your brain about feelings. Instinct takes over and turns your heart into an internal combustion engine. According to the theory, it’s only later that we come up with “an emotional interpretation of that arousal” and decide we were scared.

Here’s where it gets weird. If you experience the symptoms of fear around someone with your preferred brand of sexual organ, your brain will assume that your heart was because you were sexually attracted to that person. Seriously. Science even found a way to prove it.

He just crapped his pants, and she’s still going to walk away with a crush.

In a study by Donald G. Dutton and Arthur P. Aron, two groups of males were approached by an attractive female research assistant and were asked to fill out a survey. One group was approached on a solid, railed-in foot bridge that was five feet off the ground, while the other was crossing a “five-foot wide, 450-foot long bridge” that had “a tendency to tilt, sway and wobble” and featured “a 230-foot drop to rocks and shallow rapids below.”

Yeah, science is a dick like that.

The dangling hundreds of feet above certain death were just as likely to stop for the hot lady asking them to do paperwork. Also, they tended to provide more sexual answers to the open-ended questions on the forms they filled out. What’s really weird is that their confused terror boner didn’t go away. Both groups were given a number where they could reach the female assistant in case they required any “clarification” on the surveys. The guys on the suspension bridge were five times as likely to call her the next day.

That’s why this is bad news for your soul mate and good news for some idiot who happens to take you to a scary movie. The sexual charge we get from being scared while sitting next to someone doesn’t just wear off as the credits roll. Fear makes that person more sexually attractive in your memories.

Scientists say women are just as prone to the scare-induced hornies, which probably explains why guys always decided that “Makeout Point” should be within 10 feet of a dangerous cliff. Being on a first date in a scary environment is basically like dosing each other’s drinks with an aphrodisiac.

For longer movies, try punching them intermittently during the quiet bits.

But scary movies aren’t the only type that can screw with your ability to choose a partner. Ladies, let’s say you take your soul mate to the latest Nicholas Sparks movie (you presumably don’t know he’s your soul mate yet). At a sad moment in the movie, you start crying, and he goes in for the cuddle. That slide whistle you just heard was his testosterone level dropping like a homesick rock. It turns out that female tears produce a hormone that dampens the male libido. According to the scientist behind the discovery, the purpose is evolutionary: “We’ve uncovered the chemical word for ‘no,’ or ‘not now.’ ” While that probably came in handy when the dating scene was full of hunter-gatherers, in the modern world, this means that something as simple as a bee sting can scare away the person you’re destined to be with for the rest of your life.

#5.
The Color Red

The Romantic Notion:

“Looks don’t matter. It’s what’s inside that counts. Once a girl starts talking to you, she’ll see the real you and fall in love.”

The “real you” would have more Cheetos stains.

Science Says:

Yeah, that’s all fine and nice and romantic-sounding, but if you really want to get the girl, make sure you’re wearing the right color.

But first, here’s one for the ladies: A few years ago, a study found that men tended to be attracted to women who were wearing red. Participants in the study were shown various pictures of women in different colors. The key was that researchers snuck in more than one photo of certain women wearing different tones. You would think that if the men found a woman to be unattractive in one color, she would be unattractive in any color. Nope. It didn’t matter whether the picture of a woman they saw in blue was the same person, only digitally changed to be wearing red. The redder picture was almost always rated as sexier. The men were even willing to spend more money on a date with the women in red than with her counterparts wearing blue, green or gray. Apparently, the people who run red-light districts are smarter than we’ve been giving them credit for.

As with women’s boner-slaying tears, science thinks this has to do with evolution. More specifically with this:

Various types of monkeys and apes have, to put it in scientific terms, hilariously bright-red asses. These serve a purpose other than making humans point and laugh. They tend to swell and get redder when a female is fertile, indicating this fact to the males and thus ensuring the continuation of the species. This relationship of red and fertility may play with a man’s perception of what woman he finds most attractive. The monkey in him wants to make sure he knocks someone up, so the suave modern man finds himself most attracted to the lady in red.

A more recent study has found that women are just as susceptible to this phenomenon. Using a similar test of looking at photos, the researchers found that a man wearing red is just as irresistible to a woman. Unlike the evolutionary attraction to a woman in red, researchers say this one is more of a social construct. Women tend to see men wearing red as more powerful, possibly because we associate the color with aggression. Our brains take this to the next level and assume that an aggressive man will be more successful and make more money than a timid one. By wearing red, you project an aura of wealth and potential and sexy. Basically, the only difference between mating rituals and bullfighting is that mating rituals didn’t give Ernest Hemingway a boner.

This can, of course, be taken too far.

#4.
Your Ear and Forearm

The Romantic Notion:

“When the right person comes along, you’ll just know.”

Science Says:

The reason your brain might “just know” could simply be a matter of which side of your body the person was standing on when he asked you out. Of course, it’s not all that simple. To really improve his chances, he’d have to do something drastic, like touching your arm.

Don’t think of it as a commute. Think of it as dozens of potential soul mates.

The brain is a really complex organ. But after decades of studying it, most psychologists and neurologists feel comfortable making a couple of generalizations — namely, that the left side of your brain handles verbal information and is tuned in to positive emotions, while the right hemisphere concentrates on nonverbal stimuli and more negative emotions. They also know that information that goes in your left ear is handled by the right side of the brain.

Armed with this information, psychologists in Italy devised a study that tested how the different sides of your brain process information. What they found is that requests are 50 percent more successful when heard from the right side than the left. In the study, a woman approached people at a club and asked for a cigarette, leaning in to one side or another. Exactly double the number of people obliged her when she asked on their right. In a dating situation, not only could the chances of someone saying yes to a date hinge on who is standing where, but the emotional aspect could come into play as well. Sure, you might agree to go out with someone who talked in your left ear, but your first impression might be to associate him with more negative emotions.

Sorry, lady. From now on, he thinks you’re kind of a bitch.

You’re even more likely to accept a date if the person asking also touches you on the arm. A French study found that women were more likely to accept an offer to dance with a man at a club, and to give their number to a stranger on the street, if he lightly touched their arm while asking. When questioned about why they said yes, the women who had been touched said they thought the man was more dominant, which might be expected, but they also rated him as more attractive physically.

In addition to proving that French and Italian scientists are exactly as slimy as we’d expect, the studies suggest that standing to someone’s right and repeatedly touching that person’s arm does the trick. Of course, if you’re the sort of person who whispers into a potential partner’s ears and lightly touches the person on the arm, you’re probably already pretty confident. For the rest of us, just try to keep in mind that a light touch seems to do the trick.

#3.
The Taste in a

The Romantic Notion:

“Ah, the kiss, the connection of two souls, the action that binds both young and old lovers for eternity. The romantic tension … the passion … the intimacy … the lust … the burning desire … the hunger for more …”

The smell of an egg burrito and last night’s bourbon on your partner’s breath …

Science Says:

There’s a cluster of chromosomes present in the body called MHC (major histocompatibility complex) that controls part of your immune system. And when you’re out looking for someone to breed with, MHC is probably the most influential aspect of a partner that you didn’t know you were judging. MHC controls your ability to fight off infection, and if you breed with someone whose MHC is similar to your own, the is less likely to take. Finding someone whose MHC is different means a more diverse immune system for the child.

In other words, evolution supports getting strange with strangers.

In fact, according to a report in Psychology Today, the scent of MHC might be the second-most-important factor in determining how attractive a woman finds a potential mate. While you might not realize you’re secretly judging someone you just met on how well your child would be able to fight off a cold, that’s what’s happening. Your body tries to instinctively make sure that each potential partner has the sexual compatibility seal of approval. Now how does it do that?

MHC is present in both pheromones and saliva, meaning that to really detect whether a partner is suitable, one must be in close proximity (to smell the MHC), and there must be an exchange in saliva (to taste the MHC). Now, what usually happens when these two events are placed together? That’s right, ladies and gentlemen — the kiss is in fact a goddamn taste test. We’ve adapted the behavior to make sure we find someone with whom our chemicals match up.

“Wow! We both taste like shame.”

So all that stuff about loving someone’s soul? You could go out and find someone who shares your interests, reads the same manga, orders the same pizza, gets along with your parents and even gets the “subtle intelligent humor” that you (and only you) understand. All it would take is the taste of that person’s saliva for that interest to go from “I want to make love to you right now! I don’t care if the kids I’m babysitting are watching” to “I like you, but more like a brother.”

The Pill

The Romantic Notion:

“If you truly love someone, know him better than you know yourself and want to spend the rest of your life with him, only then should you get married.”

Unless he’s super rich.

Science Says:

If she’s been on birth-control pills the whole time you dated, there’s a chance you’re both being tricked into marrying exactly the wrong person by your own bodies.

When a woman is actually pregnant, her body decides, “It’s not like I can get more pregnant,” and it stops doing a bunch of the things it normally does. The pill basically uses hormones to convince a woman’s body that it’s already pregnant. The woman doesn’t want to get pregnant, her body thinks it’s pregnant, everyone’s happy.

Except for the pacifier industry.

Or at least, they would be if it weren’t for that pesky MHC stuff controlling who you can fall in love with. Just as a pregnant woman might find herself suddenly craving food she used to find repulsive, her taste in MHC undergoes a polar reversal. She’s no longer attracted to people with MHC that is dissimilar to hers, and way more attracted to men with similar MHC. From an evolutionary perspective, this was probably so that women would want to spend more time around family members in a protective environment rather than out at a bar trying to get laid again. In a modern context, it’s probably why pregnant women so often want to murder their husbands with a meat cleaver: He no longer smells like her type, and it’s far too late for that.

A woman on the pill gets exactly the same effect, without the belly or the appearance of the boob fairy. For the entire time she’s on the pill, a woman will prefer people with MHC that is similar to her own. This is why some psychologists believe that the high divorce rate in modern times can be blamed on the pill. Two people can be dating for years, thinking they’re meant for each other when in reality, their MHC is the exact opposite of compatible. Of course, they only find out when they’re ready to hatch one and she goes off the pill, which of course is often way, way too late.

Thanks, Syntex. This wasn’t on your leaflet.

Timing

The Romantic Notion:

“It’s OK, Jimmy — you don’t have to talk to her now. Whenever you get the courage, whenever fate and destiny decide, that’s the right time.”

And if fate and destiny need a little lubrication? That’s where Cutty Sark comes into its own.

Science Says:

Whether you end up getting rejected by someone or falling in love with her can be totally determined by the day of the month you meet her.

Whether a woman wants babies or not, her body definitely does. Every month, a woman’s body fires up the baby maker, releasing a fertile egg into the line of in case she gets lucky. To help improve her luck, her body also makes sure she looks ripe for the picking by raising the size of her breasts, dilating her pupils and increasing the pitch of her voice. All of this is accompanied by a cocktail of pheromones wafting off her body into the air around her.

“I’m sorry — you smelled like you wanted it!”

Yes, there is a time every month that each woman is basically signaling to the world that she wants to have . How good are men at picking up on these signals? One study showed “that strippers who are ovulating average $70 in tips per hour, those who are menstruating and thus unable to conceive make $35 and those who are doing neither make $50.” Women have also reported “that when they’re ovulating, their partners are more loving and attentive and, significantly, more jealous of other men.”

This means that women who meet Mr. Wrong during ovulation are more likely to sleep with him, and he’s less likely to say no. So if Romeo and Juliet had met two weeks earlier, there’s a pretty good chance the play would have been called The Capulets Throw an Uneventful Party.

And if the timing had been different in other plays? West Side Orgy.

So ladies, if you’re wondering how you keep ending up with jerks, take a look back through your inbox. Do the emails you send your friends about how you “met the greatest guy at the bar last night” tend to fall around the same time each month? It might be because ovulation actually lowers women’s standards for sexual partners and even goes so far as to increase their likelihood of sex with multiple partners.

And guys, if a douchebag runs into your dream girl at a sexually convenient time, it might not even matter if he’s the type of person who would request a “bridesmaid sandwich” in their wedding vows. He’s going to have the edge.

Bitter standoff in Cairo after six killed

7ff1ca26f8b71e763071709d91c0443e Bitter standoff in Cairo after six killed

(Reuters) – A bitter and, by turns, bloody confrontation gripped central Cairo on Thursday as armed government loyalists fought pro-democracy protesters demanding the overthrow of President Hosni Mubarak.

At least six people were dead and 800 wounded after gunmen and stick-wielding Mubarak supporters attacked demonstrators camped out for a tenth day on Tahrir Square to demand the 82-year-old leader immediately end his 30-year rule.

A literal stone’s throw from the Egyptian Museum, home to 7,000 years of civilization in the most populous Arab state, angry men skirmished back and forth with rocks, clubs and makeshift shields, as the U.S.-built tanks of Mubarak’s Western-funded army made sporadic efforts to separate them.

Away from the lenses of global media focused on Tahrir Square, a political battle was being fought with implications for competing Western and Islamist influence over the and its oil. European leaders joined the United States in urging their long-time Arab ally to start handing over power.

His government, newly appointed in a reshuffle that failed to appease protesters, stood by the president’s insistence on Tuesday that he will go, but only when his fifth term ends in September. Mubarak continues to portray himself as a bulwark against anarchy, or a seizure of power by Islamist radicals.

The opposition won increasingly vocal support from Mubarak’s long-time Western backers for a swifter handover of power.

“This process of transition must start now,” the leaders of Britain, , , and said in a statement.

U.N. Ban Ki-moon added his voice.

They all echoed the message President said he gave Mubarak in a phone call on Tuesday. U.S. officials also condemned what they called a “concerted campaign to intimidate” journalists, after many were attacked by government loyalists.

Opposition leaders including the liberal figurehead and the mass Islamist movement the Muslim Brotherhood said again that Mubarak must go before they would negotiate.

TRIAL OF STRENGTH

As he tended to some of those on the square, doctor Mohamed al-Samadi voiced anger: “They let armed thugs come and us. We refuse to go. We can’t let Mubarak stay eight months.”

Protesters, who numbered some 10,000 on Tahrir Square on Thursday afternoon, have called major demonstrations for Friday. Many formed human chains across roads to seal off the square.

This is a trial of strength in which the army has a crucial role as its commanders seek to preserve their institution’s influence and wealth in the face of massive popular rejection of the old order, widely regarded as brutal, corrupt and wasteful.

The government, which rejected assumptions by foreign powers that it had orchestrated the attacks on demonstrators, seemed to be counting on winning over the sympathy of Egyptians feeling the pinch of unprecedented economic dislocation.

AEE Returns to Vegas

0dada5434be58a34f0e58cd7553db389 AEE Returns to Vegas

LAS VEGAS — A few thousand fans made their way around the Expo on Friday, the second day of the scaled-down, 2011 version of the four-day event at the Sands Expo Center inside the Venetian Hotel & Casino.

Even though there may be fewer people paying for their porn nowadays due to rampant piracy and the glut of free content, one thing remains clear when it comes to expos like AEE: bring the girls and the fans will come.

“It wasn’t like there were any less fans this year than last year,” observed Rich Freeman, a casual industry observer who made the trip from LA to attend AEE for the second straight year. “It was the same lines with the same companies.”

Companies such as , whose booth was positioned in the front and center of the hall, flanked by the Video and Wicked Pictures booths, all of which had queues of autograph seekers waiting for a few minutes with a porn star.

Still, the video companies who did choose to exhibit wanted to set the tone for the year in Vegas. Digital Playground unveiled the trailer for “Top Guns,” the company’s first major feature of 2011 that was inspired by the Hollywood classic “Top Gun.” Directed by Robby D., who also helmed last year’s highly touted “Body Heat,” the new feature stars DP exclusives Jesse Jane, Kayden Kross, Riley Steele, Stoya and Selena Rose. Meanwhile, the company’s latest addition, blonde newcomer BiBi Jones, was introduced at the show, drawing her share of fanfare.

Hustler Video drew some attention with the presence of Lisa Ann, and Breanne Benson stationed at the front of their booth, while director Paul Thomas held court in the meeting space behind them. Across the way Wicked Pictures fielded its entire contract lineup including Jessica Drake, Kirsten Price, Kaylani Lei, Alektra Blue and Lupe Fuentes, who was getting ready to host a party at Lavo at the Palazzo later tonight.

Evil Angel Productions, Jules Jordan Video, Elegant Angel Productions, Adam & Eve, Mile High Media, Girlfriends Films and Bluebird Films each had a sizeable booth presence. Production heavyweight Vivid did not exhibit on the show floor this year, choosing to do its business in a suite. This year’s setup included an adjacent hall with more than 40 booths for the Adult Novelty Expo (ANE).

Janeen Gensen, director of marketing for video stalwart New Sensations/Digital Sin, told XBIZ her company was looking forward to producing more new titles in its hot line as well as adding new entries in its growing Sappho series this year.

Unlike years past, the European presence seemed limited to a small number of attendees. Fred 2KN, founder and director for Parliament Adult Entertainment, traveled from Prague, Czech Republic, with Carla Cox, Billy Raise and Zlatka to promote his company that launched in 2008. Fred claimed, “We are the smallest company in the world and the only true European adult company here. We just signed a distribution deal with Orchid, which will be selling our movies in later this year.”

Paul Chaplin, the free-spirited owner of Bluebird Films, traveled to Sin City from his home in and wore a bright blue suit that appeared to be right out of his wardrobe from his 2010 epic “Bat FXXX: Dark Night.” Chaplin revealed plans to produce big 2011 movies such as “Catwoman,” a parody of Chaplin and a musical called “Hard Rock” in which he’ll not only perform, but also play guitar, while other well-known porn stars such as Dale DaBone and showcase their musical talents.

Chaplin said he already wrote 11 songs for “Hard Rock” which will be shot in the spirit of “Spinal Tap.” He told XBIZ he put “huge effort” into playing the diabolical Jo-kerr in “Bat FXXX,” which has earned multiple award nominations.

“I’ve been acting all my life, on the stage and theatrically,” Chaplin said. “And I’m a lawyer by trade so I stand up in the courtroom and act.”

Dan O’Connell, president of Girlfriends Films, told XBIZ his 2011 plans called for more traveling abroad to shoot their top-selling lesbian productions. He is eyeing a return to Budapest in the springtime, along with potential trips to Prague, France and possibly Italy later this year.

“We’ll see what we can conjure up,” O’Connell said humbly.

Meanwhile, the Mile High Media booth had stars such as Nina Hartley and Julia Ann promoting its various divisions such as Sweetheart Video, Sweet Sinner and Reality Junkies, while vice president Jon Blitt was spotted meeting with LA Direct Models owner Derek Hay.

Also seen on the show floor during the first two days was comeback performer Inari Vachs, who recently did five scenes for skinworXXX’s upcoming movie “Harder” which will be distributed by Adam & Eve. She told XBIZ she returned to the business for the right reasons. “I’m back because I want to be back,” Vachs said.

Performer Tommy Gunn, one of the stars of Digital Playground’s “Top Guns,” told XBIZ he recently moved to a 2½ acre ranch in the Canyon Country area that he now shares with fellow performers Marcus London, Devon Lee, Tony DeSergio and Zoey Holloway. The perennial Performer of the Year contender said he hopes to continue crossing over to mainstream entertainment this year, capitalizing on the momentum he gained from appearing on HBO’s “Entourage” in 2010.

Director Lee Roy Myers told XBIZ he enjoyed walking the floor “to say hello to old friends,” while Dale DaBone, who plays Elvis in Vivid’s soon-to-be-released parody, surveyed the AEE floor and remarked, “It’s not how I remember it but it’s not too bad.”

AEE will continue through Sunday.
