FONTANA, Calif. (AP) — Another Nationwide Series race at Fontana, another victory for Kyle Busch and Racing.

Busch certainly isn’t tired of the same old story.

Busch earned ’s ninth consecutive Nationwide victory at Fontana on Saturday, comfortably beating Sam Hornish Jr. for his third win in five races this season.

Gibbs’ Toyotas haven’t lost a Nationwide race on their unofficial home track since 2007, with Busch, and Tony Stewart navigating the wide, bumpy track with unmatched ease. Through changes in cars, drivers and , JGR has maintained its record streak.

Busch pushed ahead late in a back-and-forth duel with Nationwide Hornish’s Ford to win his second consecutive Nationwide race, wrapping it up when Hornish brushed the wall with two laps to go.

“It’s really cool,” Busch said. “They’re known for having great stuff, but you’ve still got to be able to wheel it. I don’t think we were the best car, but we just chased down that 12 car. Didn’t want to see him win in front of our .”

Busch raced to his record Nationwide 54th victory, including six at Fontana, in front of fans from Toyota and other sponsors’ home offices, capping a doubly celebratory day for the in Nationwide history.

What’s more, Parker drove his Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota to a career-best fourth-place finish. Regan Smith was third, and Austin Dillon came in fifth ahead of .

Busch started from the pole with crew chief Adam Stevens, who was Logano’s crew chief during his Nationwide victory at Fontana last year for JGR. Busch led 67 laps and cruised to the finish, keeping Hornish comfortably behind him with his veteran knowledge of Fontana’s quirks.

“Sam put up a heck of a fight,” Busch said. “Those guys really have something going for them. Sam has brought his game so far this year. We had a lot of good battle back and forth. I thought we put on a great show for the fans.”

Hornish logged his fifth top-seven finish of the Nationwide season but couldn’t catch up when the race finished with 35 consecutive green-flag laps. Hornish couldn’t make up more than fractions of a second on each lap, and he made contact with the wall with two laps to go in a last-ditch attempt to make up time.

“Just didn’t have enough to be able to beat Kyle today,” Hornish said. “Ran real hard, got the lead on a restart the first couple of times. Got within about 10 car lengths of him, got a little greedy and got into the wall.”

JGR’s dominance at Fontana even showed up in Nationwide qualifying, where teammates Busch, Elliott Sadler and Brian Vickers finished 1-2-3 in their Toyotas. While Sadler finished seventh, Vickers ended up in the garage after 53 laps when his engine quit and filled the cockpit with smoke.

Kligerman managed the best finish of his career in Busch’s No. 77 car, which came as an unexpected pleasure to the proud owner.

“I was rolling down the front stretch there after I took the checkered and was looking at the board and saw the 77,” Busch said. “I’m like, ‘Wow, that’s cool!’ They’re certainly working hard over there. Those guys are doing a lot with a little.”

Kligerman was particularly proud of posting his top finish in front of his 90-year-old grandmother, who attended her first race.

“We were hanging on, but that’s what’s cool about this place,” Kligerman said. “It’s so bumpy. It’s so slick. You’re just wheeling it and moving the wheel and using the brakes and throttle — everything you can to get the car to turn and put the power down to the ground, and that’s what makes it fun.”

LAS VEGAS (AP) – The track records fell like coins from a winning slot machine.

Kasey Kahne had the fastest of them all, giving him a shot to jumpstart what has been a disappointing beginning with Hendrick Motorsports.

Kahne set a track record to top qualifying at on Friday, hitting a top speed of 190.456 mph to cap a fast day on the 1.5-mile tri-oval.

“We haven’t started off very good, but our cars have been strong,” said Kahne, who will start on the pole for Sunday’s 400-mile race at LVMS. “Our team is strong, so I feel like we’re in a good spot. The way to dig ourselves out of that is to qualify well and not make mistakes. I feel like that we can do that.”

LVMS had become much faster after a reconfiguration in 2007 added steeper banking, sending the track record on a . had the fastest time in 2011, setting the record of 188.884 mph.

On a warm afternoon in the desert, 15 drivers surpassed Kenseth’s mark, setting up what should be a fast race on Sunday.

“It’s so fast right now,” said , who qualified 17th after winning at Phoenix last week. “The track and the tire seems to really be gripping well together and it seems like the cars were all having tremendous speeds.”

Kahne’s fast run knocked from the pole in one of the races he would like to win the most.

Busch grew up in Las Vegas and counts winning here among his top goals, putting it right behind the and the Coca-Cola 600.

“Certainly, there’s added pressure on myself and feeling like you want to run well here in front of the hometown crowd,” Busch said. “This is one of those places that you kind of stack up on the win list.”

and Dale Earnhardt Jr. will start on the second row.

Kahne has bounced around during his car career, managing to win 12 races despite his lack of a permanent home.

He signed with Hendrick Motorsports in 2010, but had to wait until this season to join the team because Mark Martin was under contract through 2011.

Kahne started last season with Richard Petty Motorsports and ended it with Red Bull Racing, which pulled out of NASCAR. He snapped an 81-race winless streak at Phoenix in his penultimate race with the team and was looking forward to a good run with Hendrick after the long wait.

Kahne didn’t get off to the start he wanted, crashing in his first two races. He finished 29th at the Daytona 500 and 34th last week at Phoenix, putting him 32nd in points.

Kahne has had intermittent success at Las Vegas — top-10 finishes every other year since 2004 — but No. 5 was fast off the hauler, posting one of the 10 best times in practice. Despite having to scrub some speed on one of his qualifying laps, Kahne had the fastest time on a fast day in the desert, turning a lap of 28.353 seconds to edge Busch.

It was Kahne’s 23rd career pole and seventh since the start of the 2010 season.

“We’ve always qualified pretty well, tried to carry speed and keep the momentum up,” Kahne said. “I’ve just had good cars in qualifying, but I’d rather have 23 wins than 23 poles.”

He’ll have a chance on Sunday, where he hopes to get his season rolling.

NHL All-Star Weekend: Chara sets speed-shot mark

OTTAWA (AP) — ’s Superman cape and Zdeno Chara’s blistering slap shot wasn’t enough to beat and his team stocked with in the NHL All-Star skills competition Saturday night.

Team Alfredsson beat Team Chara 21-12, easily clinching the victory in the final-round shootout challenge. Alfredsson had one of his team’s 10 shootout goals in outscoring Chara 10-3.

That was enough to get the on its feet, cheering on a -stocked team that Alfredsson selected in the draft .

“They can have as many showmanship points as they want, but they had some funny moments,” Alfredsson said. “Obviously, the Chara slap shot was pretty spectacular, but I think we were steady. A lot of guys came through big for us. The were really good in the shootout for us and it feels good to win it. It doesn’t mean a whole lot, but still, you want to win.”

Chara did break his own skills for hardest shot with a blast at 108.8 mph. That bettered the mark of 105.9 he set in Raleigh last year.

“It’s hard to believe,” Calgary captain said. “I remember Al Iafrate was at 103 or something and that was a huge one. I remember I was so thrilled to break 100 once, `Man!’ We talk amongst us and when we break 100, we’re all pretty happy. But now it doesn’t even look that hard with 108.”

The two teams will now Sunday in the All-Star game.

Chara gave his team a shot – literally and physically – by helping his team to a 3-2 win in the fifth round of the competition, cutting Alfredsson’s lead to 11-9.

“I tried to do my best. Obviously I wanted to do it over here as well. I had great years in Ottawa and I’m happy I could do it,” Chara said in an interview broadcast over the video scoreboard, which drew plenty of applause. Chara spent with the before signing with the Bruins in 2006.

All four of Chara’s shots actually bettered the record he set last year as well as his closest opponent, Team Alfredsson defenseman Shea Weber, whose best was 106 mph.

“It’s a record that will be extremely hard for anybody else to beat – maybe himself,” Alfredsson said.

Entertaining as the competition was for the soldout house, it was competing with troubling news regarding Sidney Crosby’s status shortly after the event began. The announced that Crosby had a neck injury, which had fully healed, in addition to a after he visited a doctor in California.

General manager Ray Shero said he was “optimistic” Crosby will play again this season after being limited to eight games.

Kane, the Blackhawks forward and Team Chara member, provided the entertainment value in the breakaway challenge. He wore Clark Kent glasses and had Marian Hossa tie a Superman cape around his neck for Kane’s second attempt. Kane’s scored on his first shot, diving chest-first to the ice and using his left hand to glove the puck across to his stick to tap it in.

On his third chance, Kane used a mock puck shattered into pieces when he took a slap shot.

“I think it was fun. That’s what these events are for, to be creative,” Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos said. “ has a pretty creative personality, and we saw that tonight. You can see it in his play. He’s one of the most exciting players in the game. Obviously, if you’re going to do something like that, this is the event to do it, and the crowd seemed to like it.”

Team Chara Corey Perry also got a rise from the crowd by stopping at the blue line and throwing down his stick and gloves. He then pulled out a goalie ministick and drove in hunched over to deke past Blues goalie Brian Elliott.

“I didn’t know where he was going to stop, if he was going to take off everything,” Elliott said.

That wasn’t enough to beat Kane in the only event that was determined by a fan vote. Kane earned 47 percent of the votes texted in, beating Perry who got 29 percent of the votes.

“He wouldn’t tell me what he was going to do but he had some tricks up his sleeve,” Perry said.

In the relay challenge, the Sedin twins, Henrik and Daniel showed remarkable skill in the passing portion, in being uncanny in their ability to thread a pass into nets spread across the neutral zone. And making the challenge even harder was that players had to flip the puck over a raised board laid across the ice to

Thanks in part to the Sedins, Team Alfredsson won both relays to score two points and earned an additional point finishing it in the fastest time – 2:08.376 – to build a 9-6 lead over Chara.

In selecting his team, Alfredsson made sure to have the home crowd on his side by not only picking his three Senators teammates, but also several players with Ottawa connections. That included Flyers forward Claude Giroux, who was greeted with a few cheers.

The loudest cheers came for Alfredsson, who was greeted by chants of “Alfie! Alfie! Alfie!” even before he stepped on the ice.

By comparison, Team Chara was certainly the “visiting” team, especially when featuring three members of Ottawa’s provincial rival Toronto Maple Leafs. There were loud choruses of boos for Phil Kessel, Joffrey Lupul and Dion Phaneuf.
