The Blackhawks thrived without Keith, who served a one-game suspension for high-sticking Jeff Carter in the face during the second period of Game 3. Sheldon Brookbank filled in while Chicago played strong team defence in front of Crawford, allowing just two shots by the desperate Kings in the third period.

“Right from the first couple shifts, we were moving our feet, playing with speed,” said defenceman Brent Seabrook, who led Chicago with 26:20 of ice time. “We were getting in on the forecheck and making good plays. It was big for our group to come back with a good effort.”

Los Angeles hadn’t lost a playoff game at home since Game 4 of the Stanley Cup finals last season, winning nine straight overall. The Kings also had been outstanding when playing with a lead in front of Quick, who stopped 25 shots, but Los Angeles uncharacteristically surrendered that 2-1 lead late in the second period.

The high-scoring Kane ending his seven-game goal drought in a quiet post-season by charging into the crease to tap home the tying goal on a rebound of Niklas Hjalmarsson’s shot and Bickell’s deflection late in the second period. Hjalmarsson finished with two assists.

After Los Angeles killed a penalty to open the third period, Michal Handzus caught the Kings napping and set up a break with the speedy Hossa, who ripped a precise shot for his seventh goal of the post-season.

“That’s one thing that (coach) Darryl (Sutter) has been hard on us for right now,” Kings defenceman Drew Doughty said. “We’re making too many turnovers, in the neutral zone especially. That was a cause of two of the goals. We made turnovers and they came back down on odd-man rushes and scored. If we want to win, it’s something we can’t be doing.”

The Kings played their third straight game without centre Mike Richards, who has an apparent concussion after a big hit from Chicago’s Dave Bolland in the series opener. Richards was the Kings’ leading post-season scorer with 10 points when he got hurt.

Los Angeles’ unbeaten stretch at home ended in unusual fashion with the blown lead, and the low-scoring Kings’ title defence could be over in two days. The NHL hasn’t had a repeat champion since the Detroit Red Wings in 1998, and Los Angeles has managed just eight goals in four games against the powerful Blackhawks.

“They didn’t have many great scoring chances,” Crawford said. “We mostly kept them to the outside. It was great for us to shut them down.”

Chicago needs one win in three games to advance to its second Stanley Cup finals appearance since 1992. The Blackhawks have been mostly rolling since their 5-2 victory in the season opener at Los Angeles in January, ruining the Kings’ banner-raising ceremony.

The Blackhawks hadn’t won a playoff round in the past two seasons since their Stanley Cup triumph, replenishing their roster on the fly around their talented young core.

Just nine players remain from the championship team, but it’s safe to say the rebuild is complete for a team that won its second Presidents’ Trophy with a 36-7-5 regular season, followed by a gutsy rally from a 1-3 series deficit against Detroit to escape the second round.

The Kings opened Game 4 with the same urgency they showed two days earlier, forcing their way into Chicago’s zone and preventing the Blackhawks’ usual slick passing. Los Angeles’ fourth line created the first goal just 3:28 in when Kyle Clifford passed from behind Chicago’s net to Voynov, who skated in alone for a slap shot past Crawford.

The goal was Voynov’s sixth of the post-season, extending his single-season playoff record for Kings defencemen.

Chicago responded, easily killing a penalty while holding Los Angeles without a shot for about 11 minutes. The Blackhawks evened it on an innocent-looking play by Bickell, whose wobbly shot somehow got out of Quick’s glove for his eighth goal of the post-season.

Bickell is on a remarkable playoff run before unrestricted free agency this summer, scoring a goal in each of the past three games and five of seven overall.

The Kings went back ahead early in the second period on another strong shift by their newly assembled big line featuring Carter, Penner and rookie Tyler Toffoli, who has taken Richards’ place in the lineup. They also victimized the Blackhawks’ third defensive pairing: Carter drove the net while Chicago’s Nick Leddy failed to knock him off the puck, and Penner swept home the rebound of Carter’s backhand when Brookbank couldn’t move him out of the crease.

Chicago tied it late in the period when Hjalmarsson launched a long shot through Bickell’s screen and past Quick. Kane tapped it home for a much-needed boost for the prolific scorer who had managed just two goals in the playoffs after getting 23 in the regular season.

After Hossa scored his second goal of the series, Quick made an exceptional glove save on Kane later in the third period. But Quick and the Kings have yielded 10 goals in the series — the same number they gave up in six first-round games and seven second-round games.

“It’s a loss. They’re all the same,” Quick said. “We’ve just got to win one game. That’s all we’ve got to do.”

NOTES: The Kings lost at home in regulation just four times in the regular season. … Brookbank played only 6:50 and was a minus-2, but coach Joel Quenneville praised his work. … Los Angeles captain Dustin Brown has one goal in the last nine games, none in the conference finals. Top scorer Anze Kopitar has one goal in 13 games, also none in this series. Brown and Kopitar tied for the NHL playoff scoring lead last season with 20 points apiece.

MINNEAPOLIS — Ryan Doumit’s two-run triple off closer Tom with one out in the ninth inning sent the Twins to a victory over the Mariners.

This was the third blown save of the season for Wilhelmsen (0-1), all in his last four tries. The right-hander pitched a perfect ninth for the save Friday night, but he walked the first three batters he faced a day later after inheriting a 4-2 lead. Josh Willingham followed with a , and Doumit — who missed the cycle by a home run — drove in two more for the walkoff win.

This one wiped out two homers by Jason Bay and an effective start by Aaron Harang.

Rookie Caleb Thielbar (1-0) picked up his first major league victory with a scoreless ninth inning.

ROYALS 4, RANGERS 1, 10 INNINGS

ARLINGTON, Texas — Robbie Ross hit David Lough with a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the go-ahead run in the , and the Royals beat the Rangers.

Jerry Blevins (4-0) retired one batter to get the win.

Alejandro De Aza had two hits and two RBIs for the White Sox, who have lost five straight.

RED SOX 11, YANKEES 1

NEW YORK — Mike Napoli hit a grand slam right after a mound conference, Felix Doubront stifled the Yankees once again and the Red Sox sent New York to its sixth loss in seven games.

Daniel Nava added a three-run homer in the eighth inning that emptied the crowd. Stephen Drew homered in a three-run ninth.

Doubront (4-2) won for the first time in five starts since his last victory on April 27. He permitted one run and six hits in six innings, striking out six.

Hughes (2-4) was pulled in the fifth when Napoli came up. The right-hander won his final three starts against Boston last year while allowing a total of three earned runs.

ASTROS 2, ANGELS 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Bud Norris dominated the Angels’ high-priced lineup for the third time this season with six innings of four-hit ball and Chris Carter hit a two-run homer in the seventh against Jerome Williams, leading the Astros to a victory over Los Angeles.

The right-hander became the first to beat the Angels three times before the All-Star break since 2001, when Oakland’s Tim Hudson, Seattle’s Freddy Garcia and Texas’ Darren Oliver all did it.

NBA Playoff Roundup: Three reasons the Pacers can oust the mighty Heat

076e097540d6ff010b454dd4174112b1 NBA Playoff Roundup: Three reasons the Pacers can oust the mighty Heat
Game 4 in Indianapolis: Pacers 99, Heat 92 – Miami Heat forward (40) makes a pass from his knees. ,

Story Highlights

is averaging 22.8 points in the East finals, and Heat have no answer for him on either end
has been his normal spectacular self, but and must step up
After taking one of two in Miami, the Pacers now know they can win on the road in this series

(PhatzRadio / ) — The Heat appear vulnerable in the , and the Pacers are primed to pounce on the defending champions. Could we be headed to an without the Miami Heat? As early as a week ago, that was blasphemy.

After all, the Heat were dominant all season, posting the league’s best record at 66-16 and even going on a 27-game .

But now that the Eastern Conference finals between the Heat and are 2-2, the impossible seems possible.

How possible?

Thursday’s game (8 p.m. ET, TNT) is big, and the task gets tougher if the Heat are forced to win the last two in a row. Still, they have shown they’re up to the challenge. Three reasons the Pacers can win the series.

1. Roy Hibbert. Indiana gave Hibbert a $58 million contract before the season, and in this series he’s earning every penny. The Pacers are scoring almost six points more than they allow when he’s on the floor and 11 fewer when he’s not.

Vogel learned his lesson from the end of — leave the big man on the floor as much as possible. When the Pacers are at the top of their game, the Heat have no answer for Hibbert on either end. He has had three consecutive games with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds.

2. Two-thirds of the Big Three need to play like they’re part of the Big Three. Yes, LeBron James is the best player on the planet, but even he is mortal when neither of the other two guys takes on a prominent role.

Chris Bosh is averaging 3.5 rebounds and 2.6 points fewer than during the regular season and had seven and three in Game 4. Dwyane Wade has scored 20 points one time in the postseason, and that was in Game 2 of the Milwaukee Bucks series. From Feb. 23 to march 17, he didn’t score fewer than 20 in any game. One of these guys needs to give James help.

3. Indiana knows it can win at Miami. A big reason the Heat were thought to be a lock for the Finals was they have been dominant at American Airlines Arena, posting a 37-4 record. To top it all off, the Pacers were a bad road team during the regular season, going 19-21.

Things are different in this series. Indiana won Game 2 at Miami and probably should have won . Suddenly the road doesn’t seem as daunting.

METS 9, YANKEES 4

NEW YORK (AP) — Slumping infielders Ike Davis and Ruben Tejada sparked a five-run first inning that kept the Mets sailing along in this surprising Subway Series with a victory over the Yankees.

Tejada hit a leadoff single, Davis drove in two runs and the Mets won with Jeremy Hefner (1-5) on the mound for the first time all season. They’ve taken three in a row from their crosstown rivals for their first four- of the year.

Yankees starter David Phelps (3-3) got only one out — and perhaps he wasn’t completely healthy. The right-hander, who had unusual trouble with his command, left his previous outing after he was hit on the right forearm by a line drive.

ANGELS 4, DODGERS 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Jered Weaver pitched six strong innings in his first start in nearly eight weeks and Mark Trumbo hit a go-ahead two-run homer as the Angles beat the Dodgers.

The Angels tied a season high with their fifth straight home win while snapping a two-game skid.

PIRATES 5, TIGERS 3

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Pedro Alvarez’s two-run double sparked a seventh-inning rally that lifted Pittsburgh over Detroit.

Travis Snider added an RBI double and Jordy Mercer laid down a perfect suicide squeeze as the Pirates erupted late against Anibal Sanchez (5-5) and scored four times.

Antonio Bastardo pitched the seventh, Mike Adams struck out two in a perfect eighth and Jonathan Papelbon finished for his 11th save in 11 tries. Papelbon allowed an RBI single to Jacoby Ellsbury, snapping his scoreless string at 19 1-3 innings.

John Lackey (3-5) pitched six innings, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks.

BLUE JAYS 3, BRAVES 0

ATLANTA (AP) — Melky Cabrera had three hits, including a two-run single, and four Toronto pitchers combined on a four-hitter to lead the Blue Jays past Atlanta.

Last-place Toronto went with a pitcher-by-committee approach to fill a hole in the rotation. Esmil Rogers lasted 3 1-3 innings in his first start since 2011, and two pitchers just up from the minors shut down the Braves. Juan Perez (1-0) went 2 2-3 innings, Neil Wagner got through the seventh and eighth, and earned his 11th save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

Atlanta starter Kris Medlen (1-6) took a liner off the left leg in the second and didn’t return the next inning because of a contusion to his upper calf. He is expected to make his next start.

TWINS 4, BREWERS 1

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Aaron Hicks homered again and made another run-saving catch for Minnesota, helping Samuel Deduno and the Twins beat Milwaukee.

Deduno (1-1) pitched into the eighth inning, the longest start for a Twins pitcher in more than a month, and gave up four hits and one run. He beat Marco Estrada (4-3), who was done in by a three-run first as the Brewers lost their fifth straight game.

The night before in Milwaukee, Hicks had a home run and a double that set up the go-ahead run in the 14th inning. The rookie centre fielder also made a jumping grab at the wall to take a homer away from Carlos Gomez. This time, Hicks snagged a sinking liner by Rickie Weeks to end the fourth.

RAYS 3, MARLINS 1

MIAMI (AP) — Roberto Hernandez bounced back from two rough outings and pitched 8 2-3 innings to help Tampa Bay send Miami to its season-worst eighth straight loss.Kelly Johnson and Yunel Escobar each drove in a run as the Rays won their fourth in row. Tampa Bay has taken 12 of its last 13 against the Marlins and is an AL-best 8-1 in interleague play.

Giambi’s three-run homer in the sixth off Bronson Arroyo (5-5) pushed the margin to four runs for Cleveland, which scored only 14 runs during the skid.

Reynolds’ homer to lead off the third tied the game before Nick Swisher’s RBI double gave the Indians a 2-1 lead in the fourth.

PADRES 3, MARINERS 2, 10 INNINGS

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Eric Stults had a career-high 12 strikeouts and Will Venable drove in the winning run as San Diego rallied in the bottom of the 10th to beat Seattle.

Venable’s third game-ending hit drove home Chris Denorfia from third to complete an improbable comeback after the offence struggled mightily through the first eight innings.

Kyle Blanks forced extras in the bottom of the ninth with a one-out sacrifice fly off Mariners closer Tom Wilhemsen, who blew his second save in 13 tries. Jason Bay homered off Padres closer Huston Street to give Seattle a 2-1 lead in the ninth.

Luke Gregerson (3-2) earned the win, while Yoervis Medina (1-1) took the loss.

ASTROS 6, ROCKIES 3

DENVER (AP) — J.D. Martinez hit a go-ahead RBI single in the eighth inning, Carlos Pena connected for a home run as part of a three-run ninth as Houston rallied against Colorado’s bullpen.

The Astros overcame 12 strikeouts and Troy Tulowitzki’s first multihomer game since 2011 in taking the opener of a two-game set at Coors Field.
