NEW YORK (AP) – Doug O’Neill is gearing up for a repeat.

O’Neill and his crew are feeling pretty good about their chances, especially after a recent workout in which Goldencents finally began to relax “big time.

“I saw a relaxed, mature horse that finished up great,” O’Neill said after Goldencents worked four furlongs in 48.40 seconds at Santa Anita last week. One more workout on Thursday, and it’s off to Louisville on Saturday.

I’ll Have Another also won the , but was scratched and retired because of a the day before attempting to win the and capture the .

Trainer Baffert down to 3 possible Derby starters

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – Super Ninety Nine and Den’s Legacy won’t run in the Kentucky Derby after trainer took them out of consideration.

Baffert said Tuesday that based on their recent form he didn’t think either horse would be competitive enough to win the May 4 race.

Super Ninety Nine was ranked 18th with 30 points on the Derby leaderboard that determines the top 20 horses with preference to run at Churchill Downs. The colt won the Southwest Stakes in February, but finished fifth in the Rebel Stakes and third in the Santa Anita Derby.

Den’s Legacy was No. 20 with 20 points. He was runner-up in the Sham and Robert Lewis stakes, and third in the CashCall Futurity and Rebel, then finished sixth in the Arkansas Derby.

Baffert still has Sunland Derby winner Governor Charlie (ranked 11th) and possibly Code West (ranked 21st) and Power Broker (ranked 24th) as possible starters in the Derby, which he has won three times.

Baffert also says Fiftyshadesofhay won’t run in the $1 million Kentucky Oaks on May 3.

Godolphin trainer charged with 3 rule breaches

LONDON (AP) – A leading trainer from the powerful Godolphin stable was charged Wednesday in connection with one of the biggest doping scandals to hit British .

Mahmood Al Zarooni was charged with violating multiple rules related to banned substances in horses after samples from 11 of his horses at stables in Newmarket were found to contain traces of anabolic steroids.

The British Horseracing Authority also charged the 37-year-old trainer with failing to keep medication records and with conduct prejudicial to the sport.

Al Zarooni, one of two British-based trainers for Godolphin, was ordered to appear before a BHA disciplinary panel in London on Thursday and could be stripped of his license.

Godolphin is the racing organization of Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid al Maktoum, who has owned a number of the world’s greatest horses since establishing his operation in 1992. The racing outfit said he was “appalled” by the doping case.

Al Zarooni said Monday he deeply regretted making a “catastrophic error,” saying the horses involved weren’t racing at the time so he “did not realize that what I was doing was in breach of the rules of racing.”

In a statement Wednesday, the BHA said Al Zarooni has told investigating officers that he administered four more horses with prohibited substances ethylestranol and stanozolol – the same steroid found in the urine of Canadian Ben Johnson in his positive test at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.

Those four horses weren’t tested when the BHA took samples on April 9 from 45 horses trained by Al Zarooni at Moulton Paddocks stables.

Al Zarooni has trained some high-profile winners, notably Monterosso in the 2012 Dubai World Cup – the world’s richest horse race, since being employed by Godolphin in 2010.

One of the horses that tested positive is Certify, an unbeaten 3-year-old filly who would have been a leading contender for the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket on May 5. Certify has been pulled out of the race.

British bookmakers said they would refund bets that have been placed on horses trained by Al Zarooni.

British ex-horse owner gets 2-year corruption ban

LONDON (AP) – A former racehorse owner has been disqualified for two years after pleading guilty to involvement in a corruption scandal in Britain.

Michael Turl was charged along with jockey Eddie Ahern and four other men with violating various horseracing rules. Those include stopping horses running on their merits and passing on inside information for races from September 2009 to February 2011.

The men were scheduled to appear at a five-day disciplinary hearing of the British Horseracing Authority. But the governing body says on Wednesday that Turl has already entered a guilty plea.

Turl, an unlicensed individual, was fined $15,000.

Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Bobby drew the No. 1 post for Saturday’s race
The $1M Florida Derby is probably the top Kentucky Derby prep race

(PhatzRadio / ) —- , Fla. — A field of 10 was entered Wednesday for Saturday’s $1 million Florida Derby. And while he made Holy Bull winner Itsmyluckyday the 2-1 morning-line favorite, Chuck Streva says it wouldn’t surprise him if either 2-year-old champion Bobby or winner could go off the public choice.

To show how close he thinks it will be, Streva made Shanghai Bobby, the Holy Bull runner-up in his 3-year-old debut, the 5-2 and Orb 3-1.

“If the track is playing to where the speed is coming back, I can see Orb being the favorite,” Streva said. “And if Todd Pletcher is having one of his big Florida Derby days, I can see it being Shanghai Bobby.”

The one thing he’ll sweat out is his own streak: In 30 years of making the Florida Derby morning-line, Streva has been wrong a handful of times which horse goes of the post-time favorite. But he’s never had that horse then win the Florida Derby.

Shanghai Bobby drew the rail, with owner immediately saying, “There goes that plan.”

Shanghai Bobby also started on the rail in the Holy Bull, winding up on the lead through a resolute pace, with Itsmyluckyday running him down in the final eighth-mile.

The Shanghai Bobby camp was hoping for a post toward the outside this, where he could have a instead of being the . However, this other speed in the race, most notably the talented Merit Man.

“I can’t repeat what Pletcher just texted me,” Wolf said with a laugh. “Obviously it’s not the spot we would choose. But in talking to our crack associate and

“But I’d much rather be in the six hole than the one hole.”

Itsmyluckyday drew an excellent post, No. 3, where he can save ground into the first turn while keeping Shanghai Bobby in his sights.

Orb will start from post 6.

Roger Clemens’ wife: I received HGH injection in 2000

ed8ebff206454b1d00a677eda6430511 Roger Clemens’ wife: I received HGH injection in 2000

(PhatzRadio / ) — WASHINGTON — Testifying at her husband’s Friday, ’ wife said that she received a injection in 2000.

Debbie Clemens said her interest in HGH was sparked by a 2000 USA TODAY cover story that described HGH as a “youth drug,” something that celebrities were using to stay young. The story’s headline was “ believe they’ve found a in syringe.”

The article, along with another published by USA TODAY in 2003 mentioned at the trial Friday, also detailed how many physicians and researchers consider taking HGH a risky endeavor that can have side effects.

Mrs. Clemens said she spoke briefly with her husband’s then-, , who said he could inject her with HGH. She said he injected her stomach with HGH a few days after she read the USA TODAY article, dated Nov. 15, 2000.

“It was what I wanted to do,” Mrs. Clemens said. “I didn’t really think about Brian McNamee not being a doctor. I thought he was fully capable.”

asked Mrs. Clemens if she thought the injection was a big deal at the time. “No, and I still don’t,” she said.

questioned the that Mrs. Clemens outlined. The government presented a USA TODAY article from Nov. 4, 2003, that focused on HGH. Hardin showed her copies of both newspaper articles three years ago, and Mrs. Clemens said the 2000 one was the one that sparked her interest. She also said that her husband retired from the in 2003, so McNamee wouldn’t have been at their home to train him if he were retired.

Mrs. Clemens said the injection took place in her master bathroom, and it took about 10 seconds to administer.

“At that moment, (I felt) a little uneasy,” she said. “I just had a bad intuition, feeling.”

While Mrs. Clemens said she felt “totally comfortable” and “didn’t know there was anything bad about it,” she said it “might have been a foolish moment to believe (McNamee) at that point. But I didn’t have any reason to believe that he would hurt me in any way.”

She said her husband wasn’t present for the injection and didn’t know she was getting the injection. She said she didn’t tell him about the injection until she felt she was having “bad circulation” that night. She said he was mad at McNamee.

“It was never discussed again — period — by any of the three parties,” she said.

Clemens is charged with lying to Congress in 2008 when he said he never took performance-enhancing drugs. McNamee, the government’s chief witness, said he injected Clemens with steroids in 1998, 2000 and 2001 and HGH in 2000.

Mrs. Clemens’ testimony contradicts McNamee’s. He told the jury that Clemens knew about the injection — even asked McNamee to obtain the drugs for Debbie — and was present for it.

McNamee also testified that Mrs. Clemens received the shot around the time of a 2002 Sports Illustrated photo shoot.

STORY: McNamee felt ‘creepy’ injecting Mrs. Clemens

Also Friday, Mrs. Clemens showed a receipt from a golf pro shop from June 9, 1998, the day of a party at Jose Canseco’s house in Florida that Clemens was alleged to have attended. McNamee testified he presumed Canseco and Clemens were discussing performance-enhancing drugs at the party.

The receipt was time-stamped 8:58 a.m., and Mrs. Clemens said she, her husband, her brother and a friend played golf for the next 4 or 4 1/2 hours. She said her family went to Canseco’s house later in the day but did not attend any sort of a party.

In Clemens’ 2008 deposition, Clemens said that he was not at Canseco’s house on June 9, 1998. He also said in 2008 that his wife was injected with HGH in 2003. These are two of the 13 alleged false or misleading statements that make up the criminal charges against Clemens.

Horse Racing: Dullahan becomes favorite for Belmont Stakes

NEW YORK (AP) – All along, trainer Dale said he had the horse to beat in the .

Now he does.

Dullahan was made the 9-5 favorite for Saturday’s Belmont after I’ll Have Another was retired with a tendon injury a day before his attempt to become the in 34 years.

“I thought it was going to be one of the greatest races in history, and I was wanting to be part of it,” Romans said. “This gives us a better opportunity but this was going to be bigger than that.”

I’ll Have Another would have been the odds-on favorite to join the likes of , Citation and Affirmed as a . But a tendon injury to his left front foot flared up Thursday. After it was treated, the colt went out for a light gallop early , but when he returned the tendon was swollen. After an ultrasound, trainer Doug O’Neill announced the horse was not only out of the Belmont, but had been retired.

Dullahan comes into the 1 1/2-mile Belmont well rested. After winning the Blue Grass in April, the finished third in the , beaten just 1 3/4 lengths by I’ll Have Another even after he bumped Union Rags at the start and ended up seven wide before closing with a rush. Romans thought about the , but decided to skip it and prepare for the Belmont, also known as the “Test of the Champion.”

“Before this happened,” Romans said of I’ll Have Another’s injury, “I thought we had a great chance.”

O’Neill thinks Dullahan is now the horse to beat as well, and plans to bet a couple of bucks on him Saturday. He’ll also be around to watch I’ll Have Another and Mario Gutierrez lead the field of 11 3-year-olds in the post parade onto the track. The injury is not considered serious, and Belmont Stakes on-call veterinarian Larry Bramlage cleared the colt to make an appearance.

“I’m going be bummed we’re not in it, but I’ll be studying the (Racing) Form a little differently tonight,” O’Neill said.

Dullahan, who was the behind I’ll Have Another, leaves from the No. 5 post with Javier Castellano aboard.

Union Rags moves up to the 3-1 second choice. The colt trained by Michael Matz ran a disappointing seventh in the Derby under Julien Leparoux, but will have a new rider in John Velazquez, who won the 2007 Belmont with the filly Rags to Riches. Union Rags has a win over Belmont Park, taking the Champagne last year. He also won the Stakes before finishing third in the Florida Derby.

Derby and runner-up Bodemeister won’t be around, but trainer will send out Paynter as the 7-2 third choice for Zayat Stables. The lightly raced Paynter has won two of three starts, most recently an allowance race at Pimlico a few races before I’ll Have Another won the Preakness.

The rest of the field, with the new odds, is Street Life (8-1), Optimizer, My Adonis and Atigun (all at 15-1), Unstoppable U (20-1), and Ravelo’s Boy, Five Sixteen and Guyana Star Dweej (all at 30-1).

Atigun and Unstoppable U are trained by Ken McPeek, who won the 2002 Belmont with Sarava at odds of 70-1.

My Adonis, winless this year in four starts, is owned by George and Lori Hall and trained by Kelly Breen, who teamed up to win last year’s Belmont at odds of 27-1.

Romans was looking forward to challenging I’ll Have Another.

“It was odd because I wanted the easiest race I could find,” he said. “I was disappointed because we had the opportunity to go out there and make history by beating a possible .”

Horse Racing Recap: Union Rags gives trainer Michael Matz hopes for roses

be58aee40a5b3d7a5d571150d1a2cfa6 Horse Racing Recap: Union Rags gives trainer Michael Matz hopes for roses

(PhatzRadio / USA Today) — LOUISVILLE – knows the feeling of watching his horse enter the spotlight on the in May, having brought Barbaro to the fore in 2006.

“I was lucky enough to have one horse run real well here,” Matz said Monday as he stood in his barn on the at .

And he thinks he has another good contender in Chadds Ford Stable’ .

For months, Union has been among the most talked about and was the 3-1 favorite in the final Derby Future Wager pool. He will likely continue to vie for the up to the weekend’s race.

He finished second behind Hansen in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at last fall, then won the at in his 2012 racing debut.

But in the Florida Derby as a 6-5 favorite, he got caught behind several horses in the and got clear late, finishing third after making a final surge.

While some have wondered whether Union Rags can rebound from that finish, Matz said he had his horse was fit and ready to race Saturday. Matz said the Florida Derby was simply race riding, with other not wanting to let the favorite get ahead of them.

“They knew he was the horse to beat,” he said, adding the way Union Rags finished showed he has what it takes. “He was the only one closing.”

Union Rags has settled in nicely at Churchill Downs, Matz said. On Monday, he jogged 2 miles on the track and walked through the after working five-eighths of a mile Saturday in 59.80 seconds.

“I feel like he’s coming in the race the right way,” Matz said. “He’s a very sensible horse. He’s a trainer’s delight. I wouldn’t want to trade with anybody.”

Jockey criticized himself after the Florida Derby, saying he wished he’d put more pressure on the horses in front of him to see if he could get unblocked sooner. But he said last week that now that he had seen Union Rags had come back sound and fit, he was trying to concentrate on Saturday’s 1¼-mile run.

“All I want for the Kentucky Derby is to have Union Rags in a position to win and see if we can win,” Leparoux said. “That’s the only thing I really want, and I hope we do win.. You know, he’s a great horse, He’s very nice and we definitely got a great chance.”

Matz said he had tried to follow his instincts with Union Rags and had asked the horse to work a little harder in his training works in the last couple weeks. But that’s all part of the plan, Matz said.

“We started out slow, to make sure he’s peaking (for) the Derby.”

Boxing: Dawson tops Hopkins by majority decision for light heavyweight title

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Bad Chad is a champion again.

He has his belt back – and gave the ageless Bernard Hopkins a major decision to make about his fighting future.

defeated Hopkins by a 12-round Saturday night and won the WBC , taking the rematch at Boardwalk Hall without the controversy and ugliness of their first bout six months ago.

The 29-year-old Dawson (31-1, 17 KOs) never let a deep cut near his affect his methodical approach at taking out Hopkins.

At 47, Hopkins (52-6-2) may have fought his , though it seems impossible to count him out for one more bout as he pushes 50.

Dawson, though, may have shut the faucet on Hopkins’ .

“I believe there’s a lot of people out there that won’t fight me,” Hopkins said. “It all depends on the motivation.”

This rematch was no classic, but it was an improvement on their first bout in October in Los Angeles.

Dawson had his over Hopkins overturned and the decision was ruled a no-contest and the belt returned to the Philadelphia fighter. Dawson lifted Hopkins and tossed him to the canvas in that one.

This time, Dawson was the victim of at least one accidental head-butt that busted open a cut near his .

He kept his and cranked up the pressure in the later rounds. No fighter has ever knocked out Hopkins and Dawson never came close.

He didn’t have to lay him out to win this one.

Dawson held the belt high over his head and slung it over his shoulder in celebration.

“My head is hurting from all the head-butts,” Dawson said. “I’ve got to give him a lot of credit. He’s a future , he’s a hell of a fighter. But he’s a . But if you can get through 12 rounds with him, you can get through anything.”

Hopkins will likely return to Philadelphia and consider his options. Hopkins held his own against the younger, more talented fighter, but was never a serious threat to retain.

Hopkins said he will decide his future on his own terms after talking with friends and promoters.

“I could be a mentor in the game if I choose to go out that way,” he said.

Hopkins looked like he wanted to keep going after the 12th round. While Dawson’s face was battered and bloodied, Hopkins’ mug wasn’t much more than swollen.

He stood on the ring apron after the bout and barked at the crowd, “Look at my face!”

Dawson could have told him to look at the scorecard.

Two judges scored it 117-111 and a third scored it 114-114.

Dawson vowed to finish Hopkins and earn the win and championship he felt he was wrongly denied after Los Angeles.

Mission accomplished.

“I did what I came to do,” Bad Chad said. “I got my belt back.”

Hopkins had forged a reputation of running his mouth as much as winning title bouts, but fell silent for this fight until the week leading up to the bout. Even then, he bypassed the traditional trash talking and refused to explain much about his future fighting plans.

That didn’t change in the ring after the fight. He was visibly angry when the decision was announced and quickly headed toward the locker room.

“What did he do to win that fight?” Hopkins said. “The only way I knew I would win is if I knocked him out. Let the public judge for themselves.”

Knowing he needed a knockout to win, Hopkins gamely tried attacking Dawson early in the 11th. The two of them tussled and crashed to the canvas, making the crowd of more than 7,000 howl at the sight.

“I didn’t see him get tired not once the whole fight,” Dawson said. “He looked alive the whole fight.”

The fight nearly turned in the fourth.

Hopkins nailed Dawson with an accidental head-butt on his way up and sliced open a cut near the challenger’s left eye. Blood trickled down Dawson’s face and ran into his eye the remainder of the round.

Later in the round, Dawson appeared to try and lift Hopkins again, the same tactic that marred the first fight.

Hopkins couldn’t capitalize and do additional damage to Dawson’s eye – at least not serious enough to ever consider stopping the fight.

Hopkins gestured toward the pro-B-Hop crowd and they cheered their champ to end the ninth. But down on the scorecard, Hopkins needed a sizzling final three rounds to retain the title.

He didn’t get it.

Dawson held the WBC and IBF versions of the light heavyweight title before. He’d like to make the first defense of this new reign against Andre Ward.

But that’s for another day.

“Let the man enjoy his championship,” Hopkins said of Dawson. “Hopefully he can defend it for a long time the way I defended mine.”

In the co-main event, Seth Mitchell (25-0-1, 18 KOs) beat Philadelphia’s Chazz Witherspoon via third-round TKO to win the vacant NABO heavyweight title.

Mitchell was clobbered in the first round before rebounding in the next two. He knocked down Witherspoon in the third then slugged him against the ropes before the match was stopped 2:31 in the third.

Mitchell used a flurry of body shots to hurt Witherspoon (30-3) in a wildly entertaining heavyweight bout in the same arena where Mike Tyson made a home as heavyweight champ.

“I knew he was coming to fight,” Mitchell said. “I’m going to be honest, I was a little nervous for the fight.”

It showed in the opening round. But he must have had the nerves punched out of him because he made a nice recovery to put away Witherspoon. Mitchell outlanded Witherspoon 51-11 in power shots in the second and third rounds after the Philly fighter held a 24-7 edge in the first round.

“I got a little excited after I had him hurt,” Witherspoon said. “I never got back to fighting smart.”
