Rugby: Ireland full-back Rob Kearney to miss autumn internationals

cd39bf67dbda614ffcde85a2062d0ff5 Rugby: Ireland full back Rob Kearney to miss autumn internationals

(PhatzRadio / ) — Ireland full-back Rob Kearney has been ruled out of the autumn internationals against South Africa, Fiji and Argentina because of a back injury.

Kearney requires surgery and will be out for about about 10 weeks.

The 31-man Irish squad for the series includes four : Luke Marshall, Iain Henderson, David Kilcoyne and Richardt Strauss.

Meanwhile, Munster Anthony is joining the Ireland set-up as defence coach.

The former international’s arrival will allow Les Kiss to lead the attack shape for the team, as well as continuing to coach the backline.

will remain working with Munster outside of the international window.

Ulster scrum-half is a surprise absentee after his this season with Eoin Reddan and Conor Murray included.

Marshall’s Ulster half-back partner Paddy Jackson also misses out with Jonathan Sexton and Ronan O’Gara remaining the fly-half options.

With Kearney set to undergo surgery on Thursday, Keith Earls looks to be the obvious contender for full-back although Ulster’s could be another option.

“There are world ranking points on offer, so the underlying challenge for us is to work towards retaining and improving our ranking position ahead of the pool draw”

Ireland coach

Ulster centre Luke Marshall and forward Henderson took part in the Ireland training camp last month, while Munster prop Kilcoyne and Leinster’ African-born hooker Strauss are newcomers to the squad.

Leinster and Ulster both supply 10 players with Munster’s having a nine-strong representation and Connacht’s and also included.

Declan Kidney said: “We have three incredibly competitive games ahead of us in November and while there have been quite a few injuries and niggles in the early part of the season, it has opened up opportunities for other players to step into the squad.

“There are world ranking points on offer, so the underlying challenge for us is to work towards retaining and improving our ranking position ahead of the Rugby draw [which will take place in early December].

“While that is the end goal, our focus will be getting our preparations right to match the intensity of international games.

“I’m pleased that Anthony has taken up the offer of working with the squad to assist during this vital period in November.

“His previous experience of working with the team during the last RBS 6 Nations championship was important, but his own abilities and experience were central to bringing him on board.”

Ireland start against South Africa on 10 November at the Aviva Stadium, followed by a Thomond Park clash with Fiji a week later and finishing against Argentina in Dublin on 24 November.

Ireland squad: Rory Best (Ulster), Tommy Bowe (Ulster), Darren Cave (Ulster), Tom Court (Ulster), Gordon D’Arcy (Leinster), Keith Earls (Munster), Stephen Ferris (Ulster), Cian Healy (Leinster), Jamie Heaslip (Leinster), Iain Henderson (Ulster), Chris Henry (Ulster), David Kilcoyne (Munster), Luke Marshall (Ulster), John Muldoon (Connacht), Conor Murray (Munster), (Connacht), Fergus McFadden (Leinster), Kevin McLaughlin (Leinster), Donncha O’Callaghan (Munster), Paul O’Connell (Munster), Brian O’Driscoll (Leinster), Ronan O’Gara (Munster), Peter O’Mahony (Munster), Eoin Reddan (Leinster), Mike Ross (Leinster), Donnacha Ryan (Munster), Jonathan Sexton (Leinster), Richardt Strauss (Leinster), Andrew Trimble (Ulster), Dan Tuohy (Ulster), Simon Zebo (Munster).

NORTON, Mass. (AP) — Woods had his lowest opening round in three years Friday in the . It still wasn’t enough to be low man in Sean ’s coaching stable.

Seung-yul Noh, a rising star from South Korea in his first season on the PGA Tour, ran off four early in his round and closed with back-to-back on the TPC Boston for a 9-under 62.

That gave him a one-shot lead over Chris Kirk, whose 23 putts included an eagle on the new .

Woods wasn’t too shabby. He stirred up a big gallery on a glorious summer day in New England with six straight birdies, which four putts of at least 12 feet and flop shot executed so perfectly that it cleared a steep bunker and landed in an area of the green no larger than a hula hoop. His lone bogey on the final hole gave him a 7-under 64, putting him in a three-way tie for third with and .

The average score was just under 70 on a perfect day for scoring, except for the deceptive wind that swirled through the trees.

struggled off the tee, though he judged one of the lies in the rough beautifully on the ninth hole, a 7-iron into tap-in range that led to a 65.

EUROPEAN MASTERS

CRANS-SUR-SIERRE, Switzerland (AP) — France’s Julien Quesne shot a 6-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead in suspended second round of the second round of the European Masters.

Fog delayed the start, and ended play with two groups on the course.

Quesne finished with four straight birdies to top the leaderboard at 9 under. England’s Danny Willett was second after a 67. Scotland’s Paul Lawrie, the winner last week at Gleneagles, was 7 under after a 66.

Greg Norman missed the cut with rounds of 75 and 73.

Golf Recap: Hunter Mahan builds two-shot lead at Congressional

e16220400e0f7f4cd629c195b95fbdb6 Golf Recap: Hunter Mahan builds two shot lead at Congressional follows his on the 13th hole during Round Two of the AT&T National at on June 29, 2012 in Bethesda, Maryland.
(June 28, 2012 – Source: Rob Carr/ North America)

BETHESDA, Md. (AP) — A punishing golf course. Temperatures that topped 100. still managed to make Friday at Congressional feel like a breeze.

Mahan finally had a good score to match the efficient way he has been swinging the club. He made seven in the stifling heat for a 6-under 65, giving him a two-shot lead going into the weekend at the AT&T National as he goes after a -leading third win of the year.

Chris Couch sought medical attention and struggled to finish in the oppressive conditions. One caddie had to stop after nine holes, and another vomited to the side of the 13th green from drinking too much water.

Tiger Woods stayed in the with a 68 in the morning, when it was still so hot that towels were used to wipe sweaty faces more than to clean clubs. He talked about the value of staying fit and strong to survive days like this. He was behind.

Mahan, though, has set himself apart for two days.

“I hit a lot of good shots,” said Mahan, who missed only two and three greens. “I hit so many , I made it easy on myself. This is a pretty punishing golf course if you get off line a little bit. I put myself in some great spots to make putts. And I felt like I played well on the back, when it was getting really hot and you’re getting a little bit more tired.”

Mahan was at 7-under 135. His two rounds fulfilled what his , Sean Foley, said Thursday when describing his ball-striking as “a laser show.”

had his sixth straight sub-par round at Congressional – that includes last year at the U.S. Open when he became a footnote in history as only the fourth American to break par all rounds of a U.S. Open – with a 67 and was two shots behind, along with Jimmy Walker and Brendon De Jonge, who each had a 69.

Stewart Cink, who draped a towel over his head waiting his turn to putt on the 14th green, showed signs of a resurgence with a 68 that put him in the group three shots behind, along with (70), Pat Perez (69) and Rod Pampling (67).

Woods was at 2-under 140, in a tie for 11th.

More telling than only 18 players who remained under par was the cut at 148. It was one shot higher than the cut for the U.S. Open last year at Congressional, and it was the highest score to make the cut at a regular PGA Tour event since 149 at The Barclays in 2009.

Congressional was tough – fast and firm on the course, scorching in the air – but it was fair.

Mahan twice had to save par over the last five holes. He came up short on the 14th, but he had a couple of options. With the pin all the way to the back behind a ridge, he could run it up the slope to the hole, or even play long and have it roll back to the hole. He chose to lag it to the hole, hit it thin, and got away with the slight miss when it rolled back to 2 feet.

“I expected to hit it a little bit cleaner off the club face, but that how you shoot 65,” he said. “Get good breaks like that.”

He was more pleased with the 17th, which he called the one loose swing of the day. Mahan missed the green to the right, but saved par. On the 18th, he ripped a and had sand wedge into the green to 12 feet for one last birdie.

Woods was as happy about two pars as he was with his 50-foot eagle putt on the 16th hole that put him under par for the first time all week.

He was in trouble early after a few tee shots were caught in the dense rough that makes Congressional feel like a U.S. Open and forced him to hack out short of the green. Both times, he hit wedges that landed by the hole, bounced 15 feet by and caught the slope to come back within 3 feet.

“The pars at 14 and 15 were something I needed to have happen,” Woods said. “I hit two good wedge shots in there after two poor drives and gave myself a couple good looks, made those, and then I rewarded all that hard work at the next hole with eagle.”

Woods was three shots behind when he finished, and didn’t expect to fall back much farther. The course, already looking like it was supposed to play last year for the U.S. Open, was getting firm and crusty from the scorching heat. It was the kind of day reminiscent of when Ken Venturi won the 1964 U.S. Open at Congressional, so dehydrated he almost didn’t finish. And high heat was expected well into the weekend, making this a test of survival.

But there were available, with some pins tucked behind slopes to feed the ball close to the hole.

Garrigus took advantage of a forward tee on the 12th hole to stuff his approach inside 4 feet, and then he really let his length work to his advantage toward the end of the back nine. He belted a 348-yard tee shot beyond the bunkers on the par-5 16th that left him only a 6-iron into the green. And on the 18th, with the tees move up to 481 yards, he hit a drive so far along the downhill fairway that he had only a lob wedge left. He spun that back to a few feet.

He closed out his round on the par-5 ninth, which played 597 yards. He hit 7-wood for his second shot just short of the green to set up an easy birdie.

Garrigus was rightfully proud when he mentioned Thursday evening that he was only the fourth American with four sub-par rounds in the U.S. Open. The others were Lee Trevino at Oak Hill in 1968, Lee Janzen at Baltusrol in 1993 and Curtis Strange at Oakmont in 1994. Strange and Garrigus are the only ones in that group who didn’t win.

Even going back to previous AT&T National events at Congressional, Garrigus has quite a record – this was his 18th round, and he has only been over par three times.

“Everything about this course fits my eye,” he said. “If I’m playing well and swinging it good, I feel like I can hit every fairway, just the way everything sets up. They give you perfect targets. There’s stuff to aim at. That’s what I love.”

Length never hurts, but it helps to cope with the heat. Perez, who grew up in San Diego, was asked five questions after his second straight round of 69. Three of those answers included the words, “It’s hot.”

The biggest tease of the day was the sound of a sprinkler – not on the course, but in a backyard next to the 14th green.

SENIOR PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Fred Couples birdied the final three holes in sweltering conditions for a 7-under 63 and the second-round lead in the Senior Players Championship.

Couples, the winner last year at Westchester Country Club in Harrison, N.Y., reached 11 under at Fox Chapel on a day when the temperature reached 96 degrees with a heat index of 105. He won the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic in March for his seventh victory on the 50-and-over tour.

Couples is thriving in the heat, in part because it’s better for his chronically bad back. He has complained about stiffness all week, saying his back is sore after receiving his regular anti-inflammatory injections two weeks ago. The 1992 Masters champion has one bogey through two rounds.

Joe Daley was a stroke back after a 64.

Tom Lehman, the Regions Tradition winner in his last start, was third at 7 under after a 66. Mark Calcavecchia, coming off a victory Sunday in the Montreal Championship, was 6 under along with Bill Glasson, Michael Allen and Jay Don Blake. Calcavecchia and Blake shot 65, Glasson had a 67, and Allen a 68.

Olin Browne had a tournament-record 62 to reach 5 under. He opened with a 73.

NW ARKANSAS CHAMPIONSHIP

ROGERS, Ark. (AP) — Veronica Felibert shot a career-best 6-under 65 on Friday to take the first-round lead in the LPGA Tour’s NW Arkansas Championship.

Felibert, a rookie from Venezuela who made the field as the second alternate, had seven birdies and needed only 27 putts at Pinnacle Country Club. The round came after the former Southern California player missed the cuts in her previous three tournaments, and one week after switching to a new putter.

China’s Shanshan Feng, the LPGA Championship winner this month, was a stroke back.

Top-ranked Yani Tseng, the two-time defending champion and a three-time winner this year, opened with a 2-over 73, her fifth straight round over par. No. 2 Stacy Lewis, the former University of Arkansas star who has won twice this year, had a 70.

Karine Icher, Inbee Park and Mi Jung Hur were two strokes back at 67.

Michelle Wie’s season-long struggles continued Thursday with a 1-over 72. Wie has broken par only three times in 22 rounds this year and has made only one cut.

Juli Inkster, making her return to the tour after in January, shot a 78.

IRISH OPEN

PORTRUSH, Northern Ireland (AP) — Frenchman Gregory Bourdy shot a 5-under 67 to take a one-stroke lead in after the second round of the Irish Open, while home favorite edged his way into contention.

Bourdy had an eagle, six birdies and three bogeys to reach 12 under at Royal Portrush.

Englishman Mark Foster was second after a 67.

McIlroy, the 2011 U.S. Open champion from Northern Ireland, climbed 29 places and into a tie for 24th at 5-under with a 69. Fellow Northern Irish major winner, Graeme McDowell, also was 5 under after a 68.

PGA champion Keegan Bradley missed the cut in his first tournament in Europe, shooting 73-71.

(/Canadian Press) Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ , right, shown in this file photo, will be asked to quarterback an explosive offence that could cement a place in the 100th . (/Canadian Press)

(PhatzRadio / ) — While it’s hardly the old-time Big Four in the East, this is the stronger of the two divisions and will feature the closest fight for the playoff spots.

Here’s our picks for the East, and as always, please put yours below (and remember if you pick records, they have to add up to 72 for the whole league).

1. Hamilton Tiger-Cats

2011 record: 8-10

(Our 2011 pick: 10-8)

Quarterback Henry Burris is out of purgatory and back in heaven. Or, he’s just kidding himself about suddenly diminished talents at the age of 37.

Stay tuned. It sure is going to be fun finding out as the Cats will be presenting the Fastest Show on Earth, featuring a collection of cheetahs that could send this club all the way to the 100th Grey Cup.

New Cortez, an with 30 years of experience (including three with Burris back in Calgary), has put his head together with Bob O’Billovich and created an offence that will be worth the price of admission to the old cement pile at Ivor Wynne Stadium.

Watch those outside receivers because they will be sprinting down under Burris passes all season long. Sam Giguere, Chris Williams (last year’s top rookie), Bakari Grant, Aaron Kelly, and if you need possession catches there’s (2010′s top receiver while in Saskatchewan), and hoary vet Dave Stala.

The club took a hit when top off-season signing Martell Mallett, back from the NFL, went down for the year, but was waiting in the wings to come back, and he had almost 1,000 yards in 2010.

is a capable backup pivot.

The line is a bit of a question mark because centre Marwan Hage is coming off knee surgery. He’s pronounced himself ready, but he’d say that if his head were rolling around over there somewhere.

Peter Dyakowski (Canada’s Smartest Man) was the team’s top lineman last year, and he’s back.

On defence, a strong group of backs (Dee Webb, Bo Smith, etc.) was further strengthened by the arrival of Geoff Tisdale in a trade during camp.

Linebackers Renauld Williams, Markeith Knowlton and Jamall Johnson are an excellent unit.

If you’re looking for problems, there might be one on the line, where Stevie Baggs was forced to pack his, and Justin Hickman went to the NFL. Jermaine McElveen, Shawn Crable and Greg Peach will have to pick up the slack.

We’re been touting this group for three years now, to no avail. As Bullwinkle J. Moose would say, this time … for sure.

2012 prediction: 11-7

2. Montreal Alouettes

2011 record: 10-8

(Our 2011 prediction: 11-7)

Traditionally fast starters and slow finishers in the regular season, the Larks look to be the opposite this time around.

Everything is still rosy on offence for head coach Marc Trestman, starting with old man river out there at quarterback, Anthony Calvillo. He’s slowing down, yes, and will turn 40 during the campaign, but there’s also the ever-ready Adrian McPherson to sub in when needed.

Brandon Whittaker, the league’s best rusher, is back. Jamel Richardson, the league best receiver, is back. There’s S.J. Green, Brian Bratton, Brandon London to throw to.

On the O-Line, they aren’t as sure-thing as before, but with Scott Flory and Josh Bourke running things they can still keep Calvillo out of trouble.

Then there’s the defence, the one that fell apart last year, overwhelmed by injuries and age and simply not ready to compete when the chips were down.

Five defensive backs were out with long-term injuries in 2011 and that’s where much of the focus has been for new coordinator Jeff Reinbold, who in this 50th anniversary year of the Beach Boys has definitely been around.

Dwight Anderson and Jerald Brown lead the DBs, with Kyries Hebert and Ed Gainey.

Chip Cox, Shea Emry and Rod Davis are strong linebackers, but the loss of Eric Wilson and Anwar Stewart on the line will be felt. Aaron Hunt has come in from B.C. to work with J.P. Bekasiak and Ventrell Jenkins. John Bowman starts on IR.

First, the defence has to stay healthy, then they have to gel. It’s going to take a while, so this club will have to score a lot of points.

2012 prediction: 9-9

3.

2011 record: 6-12

(Our 2011 prediction: 10-8)

Let’s put aside old whatsisname from Edmonton and put the focus where it really lies on the Good Ship Argo.

New head coach Scott Milanovich plucked Chris Jones out of Calgary to coordinate a complete rebuild of the defence in hopes this club can challenge to play at home in the 100th Grey Cup. That’s a bit of stretch, but they are going to be interesting to watch.

To play for Jones, especially in the backfield, you have to be fast and able to man cover, because the front seven is charging the QB like Jason’s crew searching for the Golden Fleece.

That seven will begin upfront with returners Ronald Flemons, Ricky and Kevin Huntley, plus newcomer Armond Armstead. Linebacking is headed by Brandon Isaac and Robert McCune (both in from Calgary), Marcus Ball and Jason Pottinger.

The backfield is almost completely new but for eight-year vet Jordan Younger, and here’s where it gets tough. The 6-foot-5 Patrick Watkins (54 NFL games), Ahmad Carroll (57 NFL games), T.J. Williams (arena football) and Pacino Horne (limited arena football) have to learn this in a hurry.

If this defence can’t get it together, what the offence does won’t matter much.

QB Ricky Ray comes in with two Grey Cup rings and a tremendous reputation, but he’s going to need weapons to throw at.

One of those will be Cory Boyd, who though still running out of the backfield will also be asked a la Pinball Clemons of years past, to catch the ball in the flats and take off with it.

Ray has Chad Kackert to run with it as well, so there are other options there.

Chad Owens (still learning the craft but improving), Andre Durie (most underated player in the league), Jason Barnes from Edmonton, Spencer Watt will all have to step up as receivers.

Owens must also continue his remarkable run of combined yards (3,345 last year) to keep Toronto in good field position.

After losing three regulars from the offensive line this is a rebuilding job around the stalwart Chris Van Zeyl and Jonathan St-Pierre.

deserved their 6-12 mark last year because both the offence and defence was lousy. A lot of folks paid to have an opinion are saying they’ve fixed that.

By September we should be able to tell.

2012 prediction: 9-9

4. Winnipeg Blue Bombers

2011 record: 10-8

(Our 2011 prediction: 6-10)

All four East teams, says here, will make the playoffs this year, but somebody has to go west and that looks like the Bombers.

Nothing seems to be working out quite right at the edge of the prairie in 2012.

After much ballyhooing, the new stadium isn’t going to be ready and that’s significant because the Bombers chose to play their first four on the road when they thought the structure was merely delayed and they could back-end a bunch of home dates.

Big Blue has to slog its way through B.C., Montreal, Edmonton and Toronto before coming home on July 26. That’s tough. Argos played four of their first five on the road last year and wound up 1-4, digging a hole they couldn’t get out of.

Cut to start 2011, Chris Garrett came back to replace the injured Fred Reid and was terrific, but is now gone for the year himself after tearing an Achilles in practice. His replacement is Bloi-Dei Dorzon, from Jackson State, who is full of confidence but has almost no experience, even in college.

The offensive line is under construction with Brendan LaBatte (free agent) Obby Khan (retired) and Andre Douglas (injured) not available. Glenn January is also banged up but playing.

Much of Swaggerville has been broken up with Odell Willis sent off, Doug Brown retired and waiting for his inevitable Hall of Fame phone call, Joe Lobendahn released, Clint Kent released (really?) and Donald Oramasionwo a free agent.

This is not entirely bad, by the way, because Swaggerville was Distracting, Undisciplined, Mickey mouse and Boring (yes, that is an acrostic).

Defensive coordinator Tim Burke has Alex Hall, Rodney Fritz, Bryant Turner and Brandon Collier now as his line, with Brandon Stewart, Dustin Doe and Pierre-Luc Labbe at linebacker.
Merely fabulous Jovon Johnson (first DB to ever win most outstanding defender in the CFL), Jonathan Hefney, Johnny Sears, Alex Suber, Ian Logan are back and they’ll be solid.

Starting quarterbacks Buck Pierce and Alex Brink (they will both play when Pierce goes down) are solid, and they have veteran Terrence Edwards, Kito Poblah, the excellent Chris Matthews to throw to. But Greg Carr is gone to free agency.

Remember, this offence wasn’t very good even when it was healthy and had a running back.

Making any kind of playoff spot will be a nice achievement this time.

2012 prediction: 8-10

(PhatzRadio / ) — BETHESDA, Md. – Tiger Woods said Tuesday that his new swing is pain-free — for his surgically repaired .

As for his , that’s another matter.

“I finally have a swing that it doesn’t hurt, and I am still , but it doesn’t hurt anymore,” said Woods, who overhauled his swing previously with Butch Harmon and and is now working with Sean . “I would say certainly my short game has been something that has taken a hit, and it did the same thing when I was working with Butch and the same thing when I was working with Hank.

“During that , my short game went down, and it’s because I was working on my full game. Eventually I get to a point where the full game becomes very natural and I can repeat it day after day, and I can dedicate most of my time to my short game again.”

Woods, speaking at a for the AT&T National, which starts Thursday at , said he spent time with his two children last week and didn’t do much work on his game following the U.S. Open. In the second major championship of the year, his game left him during a lost weekend in San Francisco on the Lake Course at the , when he tumbled from a share of the lead after 36 holes into a tie for 21st with closing rounds of 75-73 that left him six shots behind winner Webb Simpson.

“I think that overall, the way I struck the , I was very pleased by that,” said Woods, ranked No. 4 in the world and a winner of the Invitational and The Memorial this season. “I didn’t particularly chip or putt well that week, something that I had done at Memorial. I just didn’t do that week, and obviously at the Open, that’s just one of the things you have to do, and I didn’t do that. I didn’t make anything from 15 or 20 feet. I made a bunch of putts from 8 to 10 feet and in, but I didn’t make any other putts.

“That week I played very conservative. My game plan worked for the first couple days. I was playing away from a lot of flags, lag putting, but I didn’t make anything. I need to hit the ball a little bit closer than I did that week.”

(PhatzRadio / .com) — DUBLIN, Ohio – One of the new books of the moment, which was recently reviewed in the New York Times Sunday Book Review, is called The Outsourced Self, Intimate Life in Market Times, by Arlie Russell Hochschild. It’s far from a golf book, but the subject of outsourcing is certainly relevant to Woods and in particular his , for which he has assigned custodial duties to Rudy Duran, John Anselmo, Butch Harmon, , and now Sean .

Woods, who in his last three starts has tied for 40th twice (Masters, Players Championship) and missed the cut once (), will return to action at this week’s at Muirfield Village, where he won from 1999-2001, and again in 2009. After playing a U.S. Open practice round at San Francisco’s on Tuesday, he was up early for the Memorial pro-am at Muirfield Village on Wednesday.

Wearing khaki pants, a black shirt, black shoes and a black cap, and with Foley looking on, Woods piped his opening shot down the first fairway with a driver and smiled. That would seem to support what Woods said in an online chat earlier this week: He’s identified the cause of his woes the last three starts.

“I hadn’t played well in a couple of weeks,” Woods said, “but we know what it is. It’s a matter of getting reps in and getting the trust in it.”

There was nothing new there. He said the same thing at the Players Championship, and the Masters. But what is new, or at least what The Outsourced Life reminds us in advance of the Memorial, is yet another contradiction in the complicated life of Woods: He says he wants to own his swing, and yet he keeps giving it away.

Here is what Woods told Golf Digest in late 2004:

“Only two players have ever truly owned their own swings: Moe Norman and Ben Hogan. I want to own mine. That’s where the satisfaction comes from.”

And yet one of the obvious and unavoidable byproducts of outsourcing is a disconnection from the thing that you hand over to others, if not out-and-out learned helplessness. How many of us remember how to change our own oil?

Many players have coaches. There’s no reason to criticize Woods for entering into one of the most common relationships in all of pro sports. And Foley is simply a charismatic, proven talent trying to do his job. Still, Woods seems to be saying one thing and doing another. By outsourcing his swing so readily — he’s done it three times as a pro, five times overall, or six if you count the late Earl Woods as a coach — Woods may be getting further away from owning his swing, not closer to it. In The Big Miss, Haney said he was surprised at how little Woods knew about the swing. That’s the big downside to outsourcing.

As Woods teed off at the first hole Wednesday morning, Rory McIlroy, who is also struggling and has missed his last two cuts, was teeing off the 10th hole. The fans divided themselves in half as golf’s once and future kings began their days.

Trusting the change is always the final piece of the puzzle, Woods says. He seemed to have that trust in winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill on March 25. Alas, whatever Woods had figured out disappeared en route to Augusta, where he played terribly, for him. He played worse at Quail Hollow.

“Sometimes you have to be patient,” says Justin Rose, the 2010 Memorial champion, who tied for second at the BMW PGA at Wentworth last weekend. (Rose and Woods share a coach in Foley.) “I think Tiger is doing the right thing, but right now it’s not paying off. There’s all sorts of conjecture. Who knows? You’ve got to wait until it’s all said and done before anyone knows who’s made a right or wrong decision.”

Woods is hardly the only player to have had three or more coaches. He has company in Padraig Harrington, Rose, and others. But did Jack Nicklaus make this many major swing changes? No. Did Arnold Palmer? No.

“I saw Jack Grout maybe once or twice a year for maybe an hour,” Nicklaus said in his press conference at Muirfield Village on Wednesday. “If I was in the Miami area or something, I’d run down and see Jack, and we’d spend about an hour. We’d spend five minutes on the and an hour catching up. But he taught me young the fundamentals of the . He taught me how to assess what I was doing.”

Many observers hope Woods is right when he says of his recent woes, “We know what it is.” He may prove as much at Muirfield, where seven of the top 10 players in the world will tee it up. Another Woods victory at Jack’s place would add buzz to the U.S. Open at Olympic, June 14-17, as he aims for his 15th major.

The trouble with outsourcing, though, is that you lose touch with reality. Woods says he knows what’s wrong, but at 36, after years of turning over his swing to so many others, he may no longer have a clue. Unless he’s the exception to the rules of outsourcing, he may never own his swing for more than a week at a time.

GOLF: This week in the game

” It has just gotten to the point where the tearing down of as a person and a golfer has become just too much. I think it is just out of hand,” said Foley.

Foley said Woods leads a “complex life” and the “daily referendums and the criticisms” have to stop. He points to the fact that the explosion of since 1997 “reflects just one person” and that is his client.

“I realize it is 2012, and we have dotcoms, and you have to write five articles a day, and you run out of things to write about, but we should be in a position where we are trying to help and lift up and support a player like , instead of tearing him down….Tiger is a , and he is a good dude…” (Thanks to Randall Mell of for the tip)

(PhatzRadio / ) Woods, after his disappointing play in the Masters, will make his next appearance May 3-6 in the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, the tournament announced Wednesday.

Woods, the 14-time major winner who won the 2007 Wells Fargo Championship, tied for 40th in the Masters, his worst finish as a pro in a major championship when making the cut. It will be Woods’ sixth appearance in the Wells Fargo.

The last time Woods played there was 2010, when he posted the highest 36- of his career (153) to miss the cut.

Other past champions in the field include (2003), (2005), Jim Furyk (2006), Anthony Kim (2008), Sean O’Hair (2009) and Rory McIlroy (2010).

Woods, currently ranked No. 8 in the world, will be joined by fellow top-10 plays McIlroy (No. 2), (No. 3) Masters champion (No. 4) and (No. 5).

Woods announced on his website he also will be in the field at the May 10-13 Players Championship in , Fla.

“Both have fantastic fields, and I look forward to competing,” Woods wrote. “Sean [] and I have some work to do, but I’m going to take some time off and not look at the clubs for a while and then get back after it. I know what to work on. It’s just a matter of getting out there and doing it. Just putting in the reps and the time. I just wasn’t able to do it at the Masters.”

Woods continued: “One thing I would like to say about the Masters last week is that obviously I got frustrated at times and know some of my actions were wrong, especially at No. 16. The Masters means a lot to me, and I was trying as hard as I could. I’m out there competing. I grind every day, and my expectations are to do my best. It’s very disappointing when that doesn’t happen.”

Woods also offered up a thought for Watson, with whom he has played a lot of practice round: “Congratulations to Bubba Watson for winning.”
