(PhatzRadio / ) — After 14 titles in five seasons, Barcelona was still lacking the epic comeback to put some added drama into its unprecedented winning run.

Lionel Messi crossed that one off the list on Tuesday.

Messi scored a brilliant brace to help Barcelona beat Milan 4-0 and guide his side into the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Barcelona won 4-2 on aggregate after a spectacular second leg in the last 16, entering the record books as the first team to turn around a 2-0 first-leg away loss in the competition.

The four- imposed its attack from the start and Messi finished off a team move just five minutes in to give the hosts a huge boost before a screaming crowd of 99,786 at Camp Nou, Europe’s largest stadium.

Messi struck with another left-footed strike in the 40th to level the contest over . And Barcelona’s paid off in the 55th when David Villa netted the before Jordi Alba added a fourth in .

“It had been a long time since we had pulled off a historic comeback,” said Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez. “We pressed them very well and played an exceptional match.”

Barcelona joins Galatasaray in the last eight after the beat Schalke 3-2 on the night and 4-3 on aggregate.

Against the odds, Barcelona reached the quarterfinals for a sixth straight season and kept alive its bid for a fourth title in eight years.

Barcelona had failed to fight back after losing first-leg away semifinals to Chelsea last season and to in 2010.

‘For anyone who doubted [Lionel] Messi, today Messi gave a lesson on how to play football. He is extraordinary, and surrounded by great players, he is capable of doing what he does.’—Barcelona assistant coach Jordi Roura

Messi made sure they got it right on a third try, and did so in style with his 52nd and 53rd goals of the season.

The four-time world player moved past Ruud van Nistelrooy (56) into sole possession of second place on the Champions League career scoring list with 58 goals at just 25 years old, trailing only Raul Gonzalez’s 71.

“For anyone who doubted Messi, today Messi gave a lesson on how to play football,” said Barcelona assistant coach Jordi Roura, who has been in charge since January, with manager in New York for treatment for a throat tumour. “He is extraordinary, and surrounded by great players, he is capable of doing what he does.”

The sluggish Barcelona from the loss at San Siro three weeks ago and its two recent defeats to fierce rival Real Madrid was nowhere to be seen on Tuesday night.

Barcelona put on yet another breathtaking display, the kind that has earned its place among the best teams to have played the game.

It went forward with orchestrated precision both in its passing and shot taking, and defended tenaciously, asphyxiating Milan’s attack before it could ever get started.

Messi had already pulled one goal back for Barcelona before Milan was even able to get the ball, much less string two passes together.

Barcelona scored early through an exquisite flurry of one-touch passes that had eluded it in recent matches. Messi received Sergio Busquets’ pass outside the area, laid the ball off for Xavi, who slid it back for Messi to unleash a curling strike that left goalkeeper Christian Abbiati helpless as it ripped into the top left corner of his net.

“We went out gunning from the start and scoring early helped us,” said Villa. “We have believed in the comeback ever since we lost in Milan, and belief combined with hard work is how you achieve things.”

Milan’s lack of ball control allowed Barcelona to dictate the contest and keep most of the action in the final third of the pitch.

Even so, an error by Javier Mascherano gave Milan the perfect chance to score in the 38th when he headed a high ball back toward his own goal. M’Baye Niang raced onto the ball and shot past the onrushing Valdes, only to see his strike hit the left post.

Just two minutes later Messi levelled the series when Andres Iniesta stole the ball in Milan’s half and passed to his teammate on the edge of the area. Messi quickly put the ball on his left boot and rifled a shot under Philippe Mexes’ legs and the outstretched Abbiati to send the home crowd into ecstatic chants of his name.

“Barcelona is still the best team in the world, moving on was a true feat,” Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri said after his team’s first four-goal defeat since losing by the same scoreline at Manchester United in 2010.

“The first leg didn’t change these two teams, and whoever thought so was wrong. We played worse than in the first leg, but that is to Barcelona’s credit.”

Barcelona turned the tie in its favour for good thanks to its aggressive defending. Mascherano surged forward to intercept a pass inside Milan’s territory, with the ball passing through Iniesta to Xavi, who fed a through pass by the sliding Kevin Constant for Villa to size up Abbiati and swerve a strike into the far side of the net.

Milan still got once last-gasp opportunity from substitute Robinho, but Alba hustled back to block his close-range attempt in the 82nd.

Alba then sealed the win when he raced the length of the field on a counterattack keyed by a Messi pass in the second minute of injury time.

Galatasary edges Schalke

Galatasaray beat Schalke 3-2 on Tuesday to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals with a 4-3 victory on aggregate.

Substitute Umut Bulut scored the winner in the fifth minute of , though Galatasaray was already through with a 2-2 draw on the away goals rule.

Barcelona also advanced with a 4-0 win over , overcoming a 2-0 deficit from the first leg.

Roman Neustaedter put Schalke ahead in the 17th minute but Galatasaray fought back with two goals before halftime. Hamit Altintop scored with a long-range shot against his former team in the 37th and Burak Yilmaz put the Istanbul side in front in the 42nd, with his competition-leading eighth goal of the season.

“We took the game under control in the first half,” Altintop said. “Both matches were close, though, and both sides had their chances. We were the luckier team today.

Michel Bastos levelled in the 63rd and Schalke missed several chances after that to win the match before Bulut finished a counterattack to put his team in the last eight of the Champions League for the first time since 2001. Galatasaray, held to a 1-1 draw at home, won its third match on the road this season in the competition.

“We invested too little in the first half, it’s a bitter disappointment. We made stupid mistakes,” Schalke captain Benedikt Hoewedes said.

Schalke came under pressure early in the match.

Didier Drogba shot wide, then released Selcuk Inan, whose weak finish was no problem for Schalke goalkeeper Timo Hildebrand.

But it was Schalke that scored first.

Jefferson Farfan’s corner left Galatasaray’s defence in disarray and Howedes’ header was blocked before the ball fell to Neustaedter, who drove past Fernando Muslera.

“We never got into the match, we slept through the first half,” Schalke coach Jens Keller said. “We scored the goal but it failed to settle us down. We were not aggressive enough.”

Wesley Sneijder’s sent a curling shot just wide, before Altintop levelled against his hometown team, where he spent four seasons. He unleashed a shot from some 30 metres (yards) out, and the ball hit the inside of the post before bouncing into the net.

Yilmaz put Galatasaray ahead after Albert Riera stole the ball from Marco Hoeger in the Schalke half and it fell into the forward’s path. Yilmaz shook off Hoewedes and beat Hildebrand.

However, Hildebrand did well to tip away another effort from Yilmaz after the break.

Schalke’s Julian Draxler shot wide after sliding past Felipe Melo and Semih Kaya, shortly before the home team levelled.

Goalkeeper Muslera made a good save at the feet of Teemu Pukki but the loose ball came to Atsuto Uchida, who found Bastos to score from close range.

Sneijder then saw another effort go wide, and Muslera made two more saves to deny Draxler.

With time running out, Bulut collected a through pass from Selcuk Inan and sealed the win. His first effort was parried by Hildebrand but Bulut made no mistake the second time.

Christine Sinclair, Erin McLeod star as Canada reaches Cyprus Cup final

(PhatzRadio / ) — Christine Sinclair scored late in the first half to help the Canadian women’s soccer team reach the final of the Cyprus Cup for the sixth consecutive year since the tournament’s inception.

Sinclair, scoring for the second consecutive match since returning from a FIFA suspension, notched international goal No. 145 in the 42nd minute. Jonelle Filigno intercepted a pass before laying it off to Sinclair, who struck the ball into to the bottom left corner of the Dutch goal from 25 yards out.

Canadian goalkeeper Erin McLeod prevented the Netherlands from opening the scoring in earlier in the first half when she saved a penalty shot from Lieke Martens.

“It’s mission accomplished for us,” said Canada head coach John Herdman. “Our goal was to qualify for the final and we’ve done so. Erin McLeod made the penalty save and another outstanding save late in the game — that was big for us.”

Canada, which previously won the Cyprus Cup in 2008, 2010 and 2011, defeated Finland and Netherlands last week in Group B action. Coach John Herdman’s charges outscored the opposition 5-1 in the three matches.

The squad will face England in Wednesday’s final, a rematch of the quarter-final battle at the 2012 London Olympics. Canada prevailed 2-0 in that meeting, with Sinclair and Jonelle Filigno scored and McLeod the keeper.

That result set Canada up for the bitterly contested and legendary match against the United States in the Olympic semifinal.

The U.S. on Wednesday will meet Germany in the more prestigious Algarve Cup in Portugal.

(PhatzRadio / ) — Javier Hernandez sent Manchester United seven points clear at the Premier League summit by pouncing in the 90th minute to clinch a 4-3 victory over Newcastle as second-place Manchester City lost at Sunderland on Wednesday.

At the season’s halfway point, United had to come from behind three times in a tumultuous, incident-filled match at before Hernandez buried the .

“Once again they have proved their courage, never gave in — down three times and came back three times, and eventually deserved to win the game,” United manager Alex Ferguson said.

“Never mind where we are at this moment in time, this was a championship performance.”

As United bounced back from Sunday’s draw at Swansea, City’s three-match winning run came to an end after its former winger, , gave Sunderland a 1-0 victory over the champions.

Chelsea is now only four points behind City with a game in hand after clinched a 1-0 victory at Norwich.

Tottenham, Everton and are all two points behind Chelsea.

Tottenham moved into the fourth spot as Gareth Bale scored a second-half hat trick in a 4-0 rout of . Everton beat Wigan 2-1 and won by the same score at , which sunk back to the bottom.

Reading moved ahead of QPR on by holding Swansea 0-0, while Southampton remained out the drop zone ahead of Wigan by -1 at Fulham.

Newcastle looked like producing its first win at Old Trafford since 1972, but United’s fighting spirit can rarely be supressed.

For the this season in the league, Alex Ferguson’s players came from behind to win and keep a 20th English title in their sights.

Lingering concerns

But there will be lingering concerns about a defence that has now conceded 28 goals in 19 games, compared with 33 in the whole of last season.

United’s defence was breached after just four minutes after Michael Carrick gave away possession inside his own half, and goalkeeper David De Gea then parried Demba Ba’s strike only for James Perch to put Newcastle in front.

Evans levelled for United in the 25th, sliding the ball into an empty net after Hernandez’s shot from Robin van Persie’s free kick was only half-blocked by goalkeeper Tim Krul.

But Evans then scored at the other end three minutes later, inadvertently turning a shot from former United teammate Danny Simpson into the net.

The goal was initially disallowed but the referee’s assistant because Papiss Cisse appeared to be offside, but the decision was over-ruled by referee Mike Dean.

Ferguson was furious, venting his frustration at fourth official Neil Swarbrick on the touchline, and then challenging Dean at the start of the second half.

But United pulled level again in the 58th, with ’s low shot ending up in the bottom corner of the net.

Newcastle, though, was back in front 10 minutes later after Cisse latched onto a cross from former United winger Gabriel Obertan.

The lead didn’t last long, with Van Persie netting his 16th goal of the season in all competitions in the 71st after seeing an initial shot saved.

Hernandez, who was playing due to Wayne Rooney’s injury, was denied by Krul before finally connecting with Carrick’s cross and sending a half-volley into the net.

While United recovered despite the best efforts of its former players in the Newcastle team, crosstown rival City was sunk by an old boy.

Johnson, who was offloaded in the off-season after winning the title with City, managed to leave Joe Hart red faced as his strike was deflected into the net by the goalkeeper in the 53rd.

“Last year we didn’t win here and we won the title,” City manager Roberto Mancini said. “It’s important that our strikers start scoring more goals, sometimes we take one touch too many.”

After hitting eight past Aston Villa on Sunday, there was a more routine victory for Chelsea at Carrow Road.

Juan Mata struck the game’s only goal in the 38th after being fed by Oscar.

“Even without the ball he [Mata] is working hard but when we are in possession he is making the difference,” Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez said.

Villa goalkeeper Brad Guzan, who conceded eight at Chelsea, was beaten another four times.

On target

Jermain Defoe poked the ball through Guzan’s legs in the 58th to put Tottenham in front after running onto Kyle Naughton’s through ball.

Bale’s first came four minutes later when he rounded Guzan and knocked the ball into the net.

The Wales winger was on target again when he slotted home from Aaron Lennon’s pass, and he completed his treble in the 84th after being teed up by Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Everton also remains in the hunt for Champions League qualification after Leon Osman and Phil Jagielka netted in the second half against Wigan, which scored a late consolation through Arouna Kone.

also overcame a relegation-threatened side 2-1 to keep hot on the heels of Chelsea.

QPR goalkeeper Rob Green was beaten by Chris Brunt’s long-range strike, and then turned the ball into his own net after a clearance from a corner looped off Armand Traore.

Djibril Cisse pulled one back from close range for QPR, which couldn’t recover to prevent a second straight loss.

Liverpool’s attempt to close in on the Champions League places stalled again after losing 3-1 at Stoke and dropping to 10th, eight points behind the top four.

Liverpool won a penalty after just 30 seconds when Luis Suarez was fouled by Ryan Shawcross, and Steven Gerrard converted from the spot.

But Stoke responded in the fifth minute when Jonathan Walters scored the first of two goals either side of Kenwyne Jones’ header for the hosts, who rose above Liverpool into eighth.

Wayne Rooney to miss 2-3 weeks with knee injury

Soccer Recap: Celtic boost Champions League hopes with Barca upset

(PhatzRadio / ) — Celtic produced a stunning 2-1 victory over Barcelona in the on Wednesday, rewarded for a disciplined defensive display against the European heavyweight and making the most of their rare attacks.

Victor Wanyama headed the in front from a corner in the 21st minute and teenage substitute Tony Watt rounded off a swift late on to score the .

Four-time Barca dominated possession but could only score in when Lionel Messi found the net after being continuously thwarted by goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

It was the perfect result to mark 125 years since Celtic was founded.

“I think it was one of the greatest nights in the club’s ,” Celtic manager Neil Lennon said. “It was very poignant at our 125th anniversary. One, to play Barcelona in such a prestigious game and two, to win the game under huge difficulties with the squad decimated by injuries and illness.

‘It was very poignant at our 125th anniversary. One, to play Barcelona in such a prestigious game and two, to win the game under huge difficulties with the squad decimated by injuries and illness.’—Celtic manager Neil Lennon

“The players are heroes, they are heroes to me, I can’t speak highly enough of their performance tonight and they will go down in the history books of the club as the team who beat probably the best team in the world.”

Barca’s first loss in Group G after three straight wins prevented them from securing early qualification for the phase.

“Before we played I knew they were good at set pieces and we didn’t want to concede too many and we didn’t give them too many chances,” Barcelona coach said through a translator. “But I can’t be satisfied because we want to win the game.

“It is a really difficult stadium but we were like the home team and we locked them in the box.”

The reverse of the result in the Camp Nou two weeks ago, when Barca came from behind to win 2-1, ended the Catalan side’s 12-match unbeaten run.

“It is not the first time we have lost a game like this and it won’t be the last,” said.

Celtic, which won its only European title in 1967, is now just two points behind Barcelona with games at Benfica and at home to Spartak Moscow remaining.

“We still have two very tough games,” Lennon said. “The problem is the players and staff will have to deal with is that the expectation level will increase. There is still a lot of work to do but we have given ourselves a platform.”
Rod the Mod’s beloved club

The Celtic outcome was such an unexpected result that even Rod Stewart burst into tears.

The rock star was caught on television crying at Celtic Park after the Scottish champions beat mighty Barcelona.

Stewart is one Celtic’s most devoted, and famous, supporters and makes mention of his love for the club in his hit song You’re in My Heart.

Barcelona took just eight minutes to put Forster under pressure with Xavi Hernandez powering in a shot from outside the penalty area.

But Celtic was crowding out the visitors in defence and when the hosts finally found the space to launch a counterattack they delivered.

Just like two weeks ago, Celtic took the lead by exploiting Barca’s defensive frailties.

“We knew we could affect them at corners,” Lennon said. “We looked at their back-post area with [Jordi] Alba in the zonal system and Charlie Mulgrew is one of the best dead-ball players around.”

Mulgrew’s delivery was met by Wanyama, who rose above Alba to head past Victor Valdes.

“The first goal was important and gave us the energy to go on,” said Nigeria midfielder Wanyama. “We have been working hard at set pieces, we knew we were going to get one and we did it well.”

Five minutes later, Celtic came close to stunning Barcelona again.

Another speedy break forward started by Kris Commons led to Adam Matthews delivering the ball into the penalty area where Giorgos Samaras was unable to make a connection before Valdes saved.

Barca couldn’t always get the space to find its rhythm, but looked dangerous when they did.

An interchange with Andres Iniesta after beating three defenders saw Messi break clean threw, but his effort was tipped over the crossbar by Forster.

The visitors weren’t panicking in the search for an equalizer, with the passing carousel around the penalty area patient before Xavi found the space to launch a shot that couldn’t match the quality of the buildup.

Alexis Sanchez was denied by the post before halftime from a header and, as Celtic continued to pack its defence, Forster was Celtic’s assuring presence between the posts.

The English goalkeeper kept out a dipping shot from Messi and pulled off a double save to deny Alexis, diving low and then using his feet to block the follow-up.

Forster did even better to deny Messi from point-blank range, palming the ball away with a diving save after the Argentina forward’s one-two with Jordi Alba ripped through the Celtic defence.

And there was an easy save to make when Messi sent a tame free kick straight at Forster.

Celtic went straight up the other end to score.

Forster’s clearance went high over Xavi and fell straight at the feet of 18-year-old striker Tony Watt, who lashed the ball straight past Valdes.

“I just saw Valdes, I thought to put it to the side of him and it might go in,” Watt said. “It’s probably the best moment of my life.”

Barca never gave up hope of a second comeback in two weeks, but even Messi’s late goal proved to be too late.

Forster was finally beaten only after he denied David Villa and Messi pounced to send the rebound into the roof of the net.

Celtic is two points behind the Spanish giants with two matches remaining.

Benfica 2, Spartak Moscow 0

Substitute Oscar Cardozo scored two second-half goals in Lisbon to give Benfica its first victory this season.

Cardozo came on at halftime and headed in a cross from Melgarejo cross in the 55th minute. The Paraguayan extended the Portuguese team’s lead in the 69th when he received a pass from Ola John on the and struck a left-foot shot past goalkeeper Artem Rebrov.

After two defeats and a draw, the victory keeps alive Benfica’s hopes of reaching the knockout round from Group G.

The Lisbon club has four points, five behind leader Barcelona and three back from Celtic with two group games left to play.

Manchester United 3, Braga 1

Javier Hernandez, Wayne Rooney and substitute Robin van Persie scored late goals as Manchester United rallied for the win in Braga, Portugal, putting the English team into the next round of the Champions League.

Manchester United’s standout strikers teamed up in the last 10 minutes to put the Red Devils into the knockout phase with two games to spare after they went out last season in the group stage.

But it was the second time in two weeks United had to fight back after Braga took the lead, and the Premier League leader looked tame and far below the form of a contender for the European crown. Braga is making just its second appearance in the competition.

Hernandez tapped in from short range in injury time after Rooney scored from the penalty spot in the 84th following Nuno Coelho’s tackle.

Van Persie had equalized on the break against the run of play, hitting a left-foot lob over Braga goalkeeper Beto for his third goal in four games in the tournament.

Ferguson, who on Tuesday marked 26 years at the team’s helm, had said he would use more experienced players in the tournament this season. He picked in his starting lineup, but he left out Rio Ferdinand, who turned 34 on match day. Fast-paced Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez were in attack while in-form striker Van Persie started on the bench.

For most of the game Braga was the most dangerous team, and the 49th-minute penalty from Alan — who got both of Braga’s goals in its 3-2 loss at Old Trafford two weeks ago — gave the home team a deserved lead after Jonny Evans bodychecked Custodio as the midfielder burst into the visitor’s area.

The game was suspended for about 10 minutes in the second half because of a floodlight failure.

Galatasary 3, Cluj 1

Galatasaray won its first away Champions League match in 10 years by beating CFR Cluj 3-1 in Romania thanks to a hat trick by Burat Yilmaz on Wednesday.

Yilmaz beat goalkeeper Mario Felgueiras with a header from 12 metres out in the 18th minute. His second goal came after a defensive error by Cluj’s defence in the 62nd, finishing with his right foot after being set up by Hamit Altintop. The striker finished the scoring with a nine-meter shot in the 74th.

Cluj winger Modou Sougou had earlier made it 1-1 with a 53rd-minute goal from a shot that hit the crossbar and went into the net.

Galatasaray is second in Group H on from Cluj with both teams on four points, eight behind Manchester United.

Chelsea 3, Shakhtar Donetsk 2

Victor Moses headed home the winner four minutes into injury time to earn Chelsea a 3-2 victory in London, allowing the holders to move level on points with the Ukrainian side in Group E.

Outplayed for large periods, Chelsea twice surrendered the lead in a frenetic match at Stamford Bridge, with Willian scoring both of Shakhtar’s goals in the ninth and 47th minutes to enhance his burgeoning reputation.

Fernando Torres had scored Chelsea’s opener in the sixth and Oscar had reclaimed the lead for the hosts in the 40th with a stunning 45-yard shot, with goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov to blame for both goals after botching attempted clearances.

Moses had the last laugh as Chelsea finished strongly, the substitute heading in Mata’s cross with almost the last touch of the game. Shakhtar is only ahead on goal difference now, with Juventus a point behind.

Without Moses’ late goal, Chelsea would have been in a dire position, third in the group and needing a good result at Juventus in two weeks to avoid becoming the first reigning champion to go out in the group stage. Now the situation looks a lot healthier.

It was Shakhtar’s first loss in 38 games — spanning 12 months — but the visitors will wonder how they didn’t claim a win that would have seen them qualify with two matches left.

Chelsea couldn’t live with the visitors’ pace, movement and range of passing, especially down its exposed left flank — but survived because of Pyatov’s dreadful mistakes.

Juventus 4, Nordsjaelland 0

Juventus bounced back from its first Serie A loss in two seasons with a comfortable win in Turin over the Danish side to boost its chances of advancing in the Champions League.

Claudio Marchisio put the Italian champions ahead six minutes in, Arturo Vidal doubled the lead in the 23rd and Sebastian Giovinco added another for the hosts in the 37th. Substitute Fabio Quagliarella sealed the victory in the 75th.

Compared to the 1-1 draw between the clubs two weeks ago, this contest was completely one-sided, with Alessando Matri hitting the post for Juventus in the 26th.

Juventus has six points in Group E, while Nordsjaelland is last with one point.

On Saturday, Juve’s 49-match winning run in Serie A ended with a 3-1 home loss to .

Bayern Munich 6, Lille 1

Claudio Pizarro scored a hat trick in Munich as the German side thrashed Lille to keep the French club without a point in the Champions League.

Bastain Schweinsteiger and Arjen Robben scored with free kicks as Bayern romped to a five-goal lead at halftime against overmatched Lille.

Lille forward Salomom Kalou cut the deficit after the break, before Toni Kroos completed the emphatic win for Bayern.

Bayern has nine points in Group F. Valencia also has nine points and leads the group on goal difference after winning 4-2 against BATE Borisov, which has six points.

Valencia 4, BATE Borisov 2

Midfielder Sofiane Feghouli scored twice Wednesday to help Valencia beat BATE Borisov 4-2 at home in Spain and take the lead in Group F in the Champions League.

Valencia jumped out to a 3-0 lead by the 51st minute and then held off a comeback attempt by Belarusian club, which had surprisingly topped the group after three rounds.

Jonas gave the hosts the lead in the 27th minute when he controlled a cross from Tino Costa and beat BATE goalkeeper Andrei Gorbunov. Roberto Soldado doubled the lead with a penalty two minutes later, and Feghouli hit Valenica’s third after deftly controlling Fernando Gago’s pass.

Midfielder Renan Bressan pulled one back for BATE two minutes later and Dmitri Mozolevski made it 3-2 in the 83rd. But Feghouli made the game safe with his second goal in the 86th.
