NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Anthony Davis hugged his , hugged his coach, and climbed on stage as the No. 1 pick.

Turns out, that was just the start of Kentucky’s party at the draft.

The became the first school to have the top two picks and tied a record with six players taken overall Thursday night.

After the made the long-expected selection of Davis, Charlotte followed by taking Michael Kidd-.

Saying he was nervous even though his selection was no surprise, Davis shared an embrace with Kidd-Gilchrist, seated at a nearby table.

“My arm was shaking and my hands were sweaty. Got up and hugged Michael, my best friend, wanted to hug him for a minute,” Davis said. “When my name got called, wanted to make sure he stayed close.”

He did — following Davis as the next player to climb up and shake Commissioner David Stern’s hand.

“It’s crazy,” Davis said moments after Kidd-Gilchrist’s selection. “Michael is a great player. We have two down and four more to go. Hopefully, all of them will go in the first round.”

They didn’t, the only disappointment for the Wildcats. They settled for four in the first round and a tie with North Carolina, which won the race to four picks — all in the top 17 selections.

Harrison Barnes (No. 7, ), Marshall (No. 13, Phoenix), (No. 14, Milwaukee) and Tyler Zeller (No. 17, Dallas and later traded to Cleveland) all went between Kidd-Gilchrist and the next Kentucky player, Terrence Jones at No. 18 to Houston.

Otherwise, it was the Wildcats’ night.

Kentucky got its fourth first-round pick at No. 29 with Teague, another freshman, who is headed to Chicago as a possible replacement for the injured Derrick Rose. Lamb went 42nd to Milwaukee, and was 46th to New Orleans.

Only UNLV in 1977 had six players drafted — but none in the first round.

Kentucky coach John Calipari has been criticized for recruiting “one-and-done” players, they stay the required one year and leave, but he looked thrilled hugging his two stars at the start of the night.

It’s been a long time since a school made such an impact at the top of the draft.

UCLA had the Nos. 1 and 3 picks in 1969, when Milwaukee took Kareem Abdul-Jabbar — then Lew Alcindor — and Lucius Allen went third to the Seattle SuperSonics.

Davis will begin his pro career in the same city where he ended it with a national title. College ’s player of the year as a freshman was the Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four despite shooting just 1 for 10 from the field in the championship game, grabbing 16 rebounds and blocking six shots in the victory over Kansas.

Davis slipped on a blue and purple hat above a conservative gray suit that took no attention away from basketball’s most famous eyebrow. Davis even attempted to capitalize on the attention his unibrow gets, trademarking “Fear The Brow” and “Raise The Brow” earlier this month.

On the floor, Davis has the agility of a guard — and he was one only a few years ago.

The 6-foot-10 Davis averaged 14.2 points, 10.4 rebounds and 4.7 blocks, becoming a dominant defender after growing 7 inches from the start of his junior year of high school.

A season after the Hornets traded longtime star Chris Paul, Davis is ready to be their centerpiece, since playing for the Wildcats means he is already accustomed to plenty of attention.

“Like I said, at Kentucky we had it all the time, especially the six who played, we had the spotlight all the time,” Davis said. “I think it really prepared me.”

Charlotte, coming off a 7-59 season and the worst winning percentage in NBA history, had been open to moving the No. 2 pick if it found the right deal. Instead, Michael Jordan’s team went with Kidd-Gilchrist, whose selection by the Bobcats was loudly cheered, a sharp contrast from the boos Stern received when he came out to announce the picks.

The new Charlotte swingman played in high school at nearby St. Patrick’s in Elizabeth, N.J., and fans chanted “MKG! MKG!” as he walked off the stage. Though he and Davis talked before the draft, they didn’t discuss the history the Wildcats were about to make.

“No. I was shocked at first,” Kidd-Gilchrist said. “I was shocked. But no, we didn’t. We didn’t at all.”

Florida’s Bradley Beal went third to Washington, making it three SEC freshman in the first three picks. Cleveland followed with the surprisingly early pick of Syracuse sixth man Dion Waiters at No. 4.

Thomas Robinson of Kansas, who hoped to go second, fell to Sacramento at No. 5. Portland took Weber State’s Damian Lillard at No. 6 with its first of two lottery picks, and Barnes was taken seventh by Golden State.

After Washington’s Terrence Ross went to Toronto and Connecticut’s Andre Drummond to Detroit, the Hornets rounded out the top 10 by taking Duke guard Austin Rivers with a pick they acquired in the Paul trade. Rivers hugged his father, Boston coach Doc Rivers, who came to be with his family instead of with the Celtics, who owned two later first-round picks.

Davis was the only clear-cut pick entering the draft, and there were some early surprises. Players such as Waiters and Ross went higher than expected, while Robinson dropped to the Kings.

“I really didn’t know where I was going to end up at, but it is a bit of a surprise,” he said, tearing up when talking about his difficult journey that included the deaths of multiple family members in college. “I didn’t work out for Sacramento at all, I probably talked to them about once. But I’m here, so I’m meant to be here.”

Houston took Jeremy Lamb of Connecticut at No. 12 with its first of three top-20 picks. But the Rockets, who also had the Nos. 16 and 18 picks, were hoping not to use all of them, instead packaging them for an established player after their pursuit of the Lakers’ Pau Gasol fell through last year.

The Rockets tabbed Iowa State’s Royce White at No. 16, and Terrence Jones two picks later.

Jared Sullinger, once considered a top-10 pick, ended up in a draft free-fall over concerns with his back but was finally taken at No. 21 by Boston. The Celtics followed with Fab of Syracuse, giving them two potential replacements if Kevin Garnett doesn’t return.

The NBA champion Miami Heat took forward Arnett Moultrie of Mississippi State at No. 27 with their first-round pick, but traded his rights to Philadelphia for the rights to center Justin Hamilton and a future first-round pick.

March Madness 2012: Kentucky wins National Championship 67–59

(Chris Graythen, )

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Before his confetti-flecked suit gets back from the cleaners, will be on the road.

Such is life for a coach who recruits all that NBA-ready talent – especially when those players get in the habit of bringing championships back to their ol’ Kentucky home.

Cal’s latest group of one-and-doners doesn’t have much left to prove at this level. Despite a rough shooting night by the best of Kentucky’s talented freshmen, Anthony Davis, the defeated Kansas 67-59 on Monday night to win their eighth national title, and first since 1998.

“What I’m hoping is there are six first- on this team,” Calipari said. “I’m fine with that. That’s why I’ve got to go recruiting on Friday.”

Among those he could be looking to replace:

- Lamb, a sophomore with first-round-draft-pick potential, who led the with 22 points, including back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the second half that shut down one of Kansas’ many rallies.

--Gilchrist, a probable lottery pick, who scored all 11 of his points in the first half, while the Wildcats (38-2) were building an 18-point lead.

-Terrence Jones (nine points, seven ), (14 points) and (two of Kentucky’s 11 blocked shots) are in the mix, too.

-And then there’, who might have had the most dominating six-point night in the history of , earning the nod as the most outstanding player. Midway through the first half, he was scoreless but still on pace for a triple-double. He finished with 16 , six blocks, five assists and three steals – and made his only with 5:13 left in the game.

It was a surefire illustration of how the 6-foot-10 freshman can exert his will on a game even on a when the shot isn’t falling.

“I love the fact Anthony Davis goes 1 for 10, and you all say he was biggest factor of game,” Calipari said. “He was 1 for 10. I asked these guys what they would do without scoring. You have an idea what he does.”

Over the next few weeks, Davis will decide whether to return to college – unlikely – or head to the NBA, where he’ll probably be the top pick. Kidd-Gilchrist could go second.

Kansas (32-7) also has a lottery pick in AP All-American Thomas Robinson. He was harassed all night by Davis and Jones and finished with 18 points and 17 rebounds on a 6-for-17 shooting night. He was huge in the second half, while the Jayhawks were making one of those desperate comebacks that have become their trademark this year. This time, KU trimmed Kentucky’s lead to five with 1:37 left. But the Wildcats made five free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

“It (stinks) that we have to be down 14 before we want to start fighting,” KU guard Tyshawn Taylor said. “Guess that’s kind of what happened.”

So, the Jayhawks settled for the “B” League title this year, as Calipari avenged a final-game loss to Bill Self back in 2008 when Cal was coaching Memphis. The Tigers missed four late free throws in blowing a nine-point lead in that one. Kansas didn’t get any such help this time.

Even so, it wasn’t a bad season in Lawrence, considering where KU began.

Kansas lost four of its top five scorers off last year’s roster. There were times early in the season when Self and his old buddy and mentor, Larry Brown, would stand around at practices and wonder if this was a team that could even make the tournament. It did. Won its eighth straight conference title, too.

“Nobody even expected us to be here in the first place, for us to have a great season,” KU guard Travis Releford said. “And we did. We were able to compete for a championship. We had a great year.”

Kentucky’s was better, and Davis certainly did nothing to hurt his draft stock despite missing more shots in this game than he had in the last three.

He set the tone early on defense, swatting Robinson’s shot twice, grabbing rebounds, making pretty bounce passes for assists.

Early in the second half, he made a steal that also could have been an assist, knocking the ball out of Robinson’s hands and directly to Jones, who dunked for a 46-30 lead.

Then, finally. With 5:13 left in the game, he spotted up for a 15-foot jumper from the baseline that swished for a 59-44 lead, putting a dagger in one of Kansas’ many comebacks.

“He was terrific,” Self said. “The basket he made was one of the biggest baskets of the game.”

His only bucket of the game – could that be a different sort of spin on “one and done?”

Well, if Davis does choose to leave, Cal can certainly handle it. He has mastered the art of rebuilding on the fly.

He’s the coach who brings in the John Walls, Brandon Knights and Derrick Roses (at Memphis) for cups of coffee, lets them sharpen up their resumes, then happily says goodbye when it becomes obvious there’s nothing left for them to do in school.

The coach refuses to apologize for the way he recruits or how he runs his program. Just playing by the rules as they’re set up, he says, even if he doesn’t totally agree with them. Because he refuses to promise minutes or shots to any recruit and demands teamwork out of all of them, he says he comes by these players honestly.

He has produced nine first-round picks in the last four drafts, including five in 2010. That draft day was as big a moment for the school as any, Calipari said. A pretty big statement for the program built by Adolph Rupp.

“The reason was, I knew now that other kids would look and say, `You’ve got to go there,”‘ Calipari said.

This latest group came and won it all.

“I wanted that,” Calipari said. “I told them I wanted this to be one for the ages.”

March Madness 2012: Kentucky, Kansas to meet for national title

45408d2a6318e51ea56f148e62f8e81a March Madness 2012: Kentucky, Kansas to meet for national title

(Reuters) – Top seed Kentucky will face Kansas for the national basketball championship on after the two storied programs won their semi-final games at the on Saturday.

Kentucky (37-2) took a bold step toward winning its eighth championship by defeating bitter intrastate rival Louisville 69-61, while Kansas (32-6) knocked off , 64-62.

“We got a game closer to our dreams, our goal,” said Kentucky freshman forward Anthony Davis, who led the with 18 points, 14 and five blocked shots.

“We have to come out here and perform. We can’t come out lackadaisical. We have to come out with a lot of energy.”

Kansas, looking for a fourth title, last won the championship in 2008 when it needed overtime to defeat a Memphis team coached by , who is now at Kentucky.

The trailed 59-56 with just over two minutes left but scored six straight points to take a 62-59 lead and hang on for the dramatic victory.

Louisville overcame a 13-point second-half deficit and tied the score at 49-49 on a three-point bomb by junior guard with just over nine minutes left.

But Kentucky reserve guard scored in an 11-2 surge that gave the a 60-51 lead with 4:29 remaining to put the game on ice.

Miller described reaching the as “emotional.”

“We’ve worked extremely hard to get to this point,” he said. “I feel like we’ve all did a great job throughout the whole year. This is what we’ve been reaching for.

“At the end of this game we have a chance to win a national championship. It’s an opportunity that not most people get. Can’t really explain it in words. You have to experience it.”

Kentucky held Louisville to 35 percent shooting but was outrebounded 40-33, including 19-6 on the .

“I’m proud of this team,” said Calipari, searching for his first title in his fourth appearance at the , although two appearances were vacated for the use of an ineligible player.

“They’re coming together. They’re taking on shots and runs like Louisville did today and they’ve held their own. I’m so proud of them.”

The loss, before more than 73,000 at the Superdome, snapped Louisville’s eight-game winning streak that started with their improbable run to the Big East Tournament title.

“There are no moral victories when you’re trying to win a national championship,” said Louisville coach Rick Pitino. “But I couldn’t be prouder. A lot of great teams did not get here.”

In a contest seen by many as a civil war in the state of Kentucky, the Cardinals, who lost to Kentucky 69-62 in December, fired blanks for most of the night but stayed around long enough to make it a game.

Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, and Teague are all freshman starters for Kentucky but it is unlikely they will all forego the NBA and return to Lexington next season.

“They really don’t play like freshmen,” said Louisville swingman Kyle Kuric. “They just have maturity in just the way they play. They carry themselves with confidence.

“They aren’t shy or afraid of big moments. They always step up and come through.”

Ohio State led for most of the game but ultimately fell victim to 34 percent shooting from the floor and an off night from its best player, Jared Sullinger, who had just 13 points on five of 19 shooting.

A follow-up jam by William Buford with 9.6 left trimmed the Buckeyes’ deficit to 62-61 with 9.6 seconds left but two free throws by Elijah Taylor hiked the Kansas lead to 64-61 with 8.3 seconds remaining.

A foul shot by guard Aaron Craft cut the lead to two with 2.9 seconds left but his attempt to miss the second shot on purpose failed and the Jayhawks ran out the clock.

Thomas Robinson, who paced Kansas with 19 points, said the Jayhawks, who lost to Kentucky 75-65 back in November, are at their best when they are facing defeat.

“It’s just been our whole thing all year,” he said. “For some reason my team is pretty good when we’re down.”

The defending national champions harassed the Cyclones with a physical, aggressive defense in bouncing back from Wednesday night’s home loss to unranked Texas. The 33 points matched the fewest Iowa State has scored in a game in coach Bill Fennelly’s 17 seasons.

A&M (11-4, 2-2) closed the first half with a 15-1 run to open a 33-15 lead and Iowa State never seriously threatened through the final 20 minutes.

Iowa State (9-6, 0-4) trailed 18-14 after Chelsea Poppens made a reverse layup with 9:05 left in the first half. But the Cyclones didn’t hit another until Poppens threw in an off-balance putback as the shot clock buzzer sounded a little more than a minute into the second half.

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — Alex Carbonel scored 18 points and Saint Mary’s made four free throws in the last 25 seconds end Gonzaga’s West Coast Conference winning streak at 34 games.
