TORONTO (AP) — says his team’s roster is beyond depleted.

Valentine was asked before Friday night’s game in Toronto what part of his last-place club would benefit most from some extra call-ups.

“Are you kidding?” Valentine said. “This is the weakest roster we’ve ever had in September in the . It could use help everywhere.”

Winding down a , the Red Sox began the day with a record of 64-80, 17½ games behind Baltimore and New York in the AL East. Boston, 11-29 since Aug. 1, would be eliminated from the division race with a loss Friday and a win by either the Yankees or Orioles.

The Red Sox have lost 18 of 23 overall. Among AL teams, only Cleveland and Minnesota have worse records.

Boston’s roster has been thinned by trades and injuries. , Adrian Gonzalez and Nick Punto were dealt to the last month, along with injured outfielder Carl Crawford. Veteran was traded to the earlier this season.

Slugger David Ortiz and rookie Will Middlebrooks are two of the five Red Sox currently on the disabled list, a list that also includes long-term absentee . 2008 AL MVP is away following the birth of his second son but is expected to rejoin the Red Sox in Toronto sometime this weekend.

For now, Boston has only five outfielders on its roster and, with Pedroia gone, just five infielders.

“We have a couple of options,” Valentine said. “Not a lot of them.”

Outfielder and Friday night’s starter, , are among the Boston players who have missed extended periods this year. In all, 27 players have made 34 trips to the DL.

Valentine said the Red Sox might add “one or two players” from Class AAA Pawtucket in the coming days. Pawtucket completed a three-game sweep to win its first International League championship since 1984 on Thursday and will have a one-game playoff against the Pacific Coast League winners, either Reno or Omaha, next Tuesday.

“If there are people who could be brought up, we should bring them up,” Valentine said. “But I don’t know that there’s a lot of guys left.”

(Phatzradio / USA Today) — PEORIA, Ariz. – They might have had all winter to correct their flaws, but with spring training camps opening this weekend, many contenders have a better chance of forecasting the Republican primaries than identifying their own rotations.

The widely are reported to be attempting to trade veteran starter A.J. Burnett to make room in their rotation, and the Boston Red Sox are scrambling just to find five healthy starters. Free agent starter , who rejected overtures from the Red Sox and , has stated his preference for the or St. Louis Cardinals.

“We’ve got fewer questions than we used to have,” said Rangers general manager Jon Daniels, who has no room for Oswalt. “If we stay healthy, we’ve still got to ask one of our starters (from last year) to go back to the bullpen. That’s not a bad problem to have. It used to be an annual tryout camp.”

The Red Sox might be taking a page out of the Rangers’ former playbook this spring. They have their top three starters set with Jon Lester, and , but the rest of the rotation is a sea of uncertainty with out for the season after and , who also has an elbow issue, out until at least the second half. Boston might need a starter from a group of non-roster invitees that includes Carlos Silva and .

The Yankees proved a year ago tryouts can provide surprising results with non-roster players and Bartolo Colon combining for 20 wins. They are hoping Phil Hughes (5-5, 5.79 ERA last year) is their next successful project.

“Everybody would love to have their rotation set before spring training,” manager Eric Wedge said, “but it’s a lot harder than it used to be. The price tag for starting pitchers, injuries and young guys moving around — you’re just not going to be as set.”

MLB: Red Sox trade Scutaro to Rockies

a3609f5b30605397f1535629bafffd5e MLB: Red Sox trade Scutaro to Rockies

DENVER (AP) — The acquired infielder from the Red Sox for right-hander on Saturday in a surprising trade that could pave the way for top Boston prospect Jose Iglesias to take over at shortstop sooner than expected.

The 36-year-old Scutaro hit a career-high .299 for the Red Sox last season, when he had seven homers, 26 doubles, 54 RBIs and a .358 on-base percentage. Boston picked up his $6 million option in October, a month after the team missed the playoffs following a record collapse down the stretch.

Scutaro was expected to remain Boston’s starting shortstop this season but he will play second base and bat second in Colorado, where the Rockies also have added and in an following last year’s disappointing slide.

• Report: Red Sox expected to pursue Oswalt

Mortensen, 26, went 2-4 with a 3.86 ERA in 16 games between the Rockies’ rotation and their bullpen last season. He provides depth for a Boston rotation that will be without injured starters and next season.

The Rockies targeted Scutaro for months and taking on his $6 million contract gives the Red Sox financial flexibility to make a run at free-agent pitcher Roy Oswalt.

Shortstop has been a trouble spot in Boston since was traded during the World Series championship season of 2004. filled the position the rest of that year, but he was followed by , , and Gonzalez again; , Nick Green and were also in the mix.

Scutaro provided two years of stability after signing with Boston as a free agent following the 2009 season. Now he’s gone, too.

The 22-year-old Iglesias appeared in 10 games for the Red Sox last year, getting two hits in six at-bats. A slick fielder who has struggled at the plate as a pro, he batted .235 with a homer and 31 RBIs in 101 games for Triple-A Pawtucket last year. In two minor since he defected from Cuba, Iglesias has a paltry .308 on-base percentage and .316 slugging percentage.

Still, his defense is considered outstanding and the Red Sox have been grooming him as their shortstop of the future.

Other options for Boston include versatile veterans Mike Aviles and Nick Punto. Both have plenty of big league experience at shortstop, but they were expected to fill utility roles off the bench this season.

National League – Stingy Lincecum guides Giants

Giants 8, Rockies 1

Denver — Tim Lincecum took a no-hitter into the seventh inning at Coors Field and San Francisco routed the 8-1 on Monday.

Cincinnati — Andrew McCutchen doubled home two runs as part of Pittsburgh’s biggest offensive showing this season, and the Pirates took advantage of another slow-starting Cincinnati pitcher, beating the Reds.

The Pirates scored three runs in the first off left-hander Travis Wood (1-2), the second game in a row that a Reds starter couldn’t get going.

Kevin Correia (3-1) gave up four hits during his second career complete game.

Pittsburgh took three of four in the series, giving the defending NL Central champs their comeuppance before a crowd of 12,777 that groaned a lot. The Pirates have won their first three road series for the first time since 2002, when they dropped 89 games.

Brewers 6, Phillies 3, 12 innings

Philadelphia — Ryan Braun drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the 12th inning and the Brewers beat the Phillies.

Brandon Kintzler (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings to earn his first win in the majors.

The NL East-leading Phillies rallied against closer John Axford of Simcoe, Ont., in the ninth, tying it at 3 on an RBI single by Pete Orr of Newmarket, Ont., with one out.

But the Brewers held on and snapped a three-game losing streak to become the fifth straight team to beat Philadelphia in a series opener. The Phillies haven’t lost a series, however.

Rickie Weeks led off the 12th with a walk against Kyle Kendrick (0-1). Carlos Gomez sacrificed and reached safely on Kendrick’s wild throw that allowed Weeks to reach third.

Braun followed with a sac fly to deep centre. He thought he’d hit a three-run homer and looked frustrated when the ball didn’t go out. Yuniesky Betancourt also had a sac fly and Jonathan Lucroy singled in a run to make it 6-3.
