() – British yacht- champion and two-time Andrew “Bart” Simpson was killed on Thursday when his vessel capsized in San Francisco Bay during training for the America’s Cup, his team said.

Simpson, 36, who won a gold medal at the 2008 Summer in Beijing, was sailing on the Artemis, Sweden’s entry in the America’s Cup, when the catamaran overturned, according to a statement posted on the Artemis racing website.

“The entire Artemis Racing team is devastated by what happened,” CEO Paul Cayard said in the statement. “Our are with Andrew’s wife and family.”

The twin-hulled boat was performing a so-called “bear-away” maneuver, turning away from the wind, when one bow dropped under the water’s surface, and the vessel flipped over, America’s Cup spokesman Tim Jeffery told .

Simpson ended up trapped beneath the boat in the water and had to be pulled out by rescue divers, who tried and failed to revive him, Jeffery said.

The yacht was “very badly damaged,” but the team has a backup boat that is expected to be ready to sail in June, he said.

The incident was believed to be the first fatality in connection with the America’s Cup since the early 1990s, when a from a died in a training accident off the coast of Majorca in the Mediterranean, Jeffery said.

The Artemis website said Simpson was part of an 11-member sailing team and that all other crew members had been accounted for following the mishap.

San Francisco Fire Mindy Talmadge confirmed that one male had died in the accident and said he was estimated to have remained under water for 10 to 15 minutes before he was recovered.

She said one other sailor from the Artemis was taken to a hospital with minor injuries and later released.

The of people aboard the Artemis when it tipped over was not immediately clear.

Although America’s Cup vessels sail with 11 crew members when they race, they are known to carry one or two more or one or two fewer members on practice runs.

A U.S. Coast Guard officer, Pam Boehland, said support boats had pulled 12 crew members from the water, and that one was taken to a San Francisco hospital.

Boehland said the Artemis capsized at about 1 p.m. local time (4 p.m. EDT) northwest of Treasure Island. The crippled vessel remained in the bay, and the Coast Guard established a 100-yard (91-metre) safety zone around the boat, she said.

‘WINDY BUT NOT SUPER-EXTREME’

Winds on Thursday were blowing on the water at 18 to 20 knots, or about 23 to 25 miles per hour, which race organizers described as typical for the bay.

“The boats are designed to sail and compete in winds of up to 30 knots … so this wasn’t excessive,” one America’s Cup official told Reuters. “It was windy but not super-extreme.”

Race organizers said Simpson was assigned as the crew’s tactician but also would have been involved in operating winches and performing other tasks necessary to sail the twin-hulled boat.

This year’s America’s Cup competition begins in July with qualifying races known as the Louis Vuitton Cup. The America’s Cup contest itself is slated to start on September 7. All the races will be run on San Francisco Bay.

Two other challenging teams, one from Italy and one from New Zealand, recently arrived in the Bay Area to begin training there.

The crew of the defending America’s Cup champion boat, Oracle Team USA, was on the bay for training at the time the Artemis capsized, America’s Cup officials said.

Oracle Team USA’s boat flipped over in a practice run in October, damaging the windsail. But no one was injured, and the vessel was relaunched in January.

The wreck of the Artemis was at least the fourth major accident in just over a year off the California coast or involving California vessels.

In March a crew member was killed when a 30-foot (9-metre) sailboat broke apart in rough seas during a race near San Clemente Island.

In April 2012 four crewmen in a race from Southern California to Mexico died after their yacht ran aground. Two weeks earlier, five sailors died in a racing accident near the Farallon Islands off the coast of San Francisco.

The Farallon incident prompted the Coast Guard to temporarily suspend racing in the Pacific Ocean off northern California.

Cayard spoke briefly to reporters outside the team’s offices in the town of Alameda across from San Francisco.

“We obviously had a tragic day today on the bay. It’s a shocking experience to go through. We have a lot to deal with for the next few days in terms of ensuring everybody’s well-being,” he said.

(PhatzRadio / ) — On a snowy night more suitable to slaloms than soccer, scored early in his first start as the American captain and the United States beat Costa Rica 1-0 on Friday in a key qualifier for next year’s World Cup.

Plows and shovels were used to clear the penalty areas, centre circle and midfield stripe as snow got heavier, and a yellow-and-purple ball was used. There was even a brief stoppage in the 55th minute when it was unclear whether the match commissioner would let the contest continue.

But the game resumed and will be remembered in for the elements as much as the 1967 Ice Bowl is in the NFL. As the snow increased, it made the field resemble a cake topped with piles of sugar, and players’ hair turned stuck along their scalps. During , American defender Geoff Cameron even playfully pushed the back of a grounds shovelling the field.

“It was difficult out here to see anything,” Dempsey said.

As the conditions deteriorated, the U.S. survived Michael Umana’s apparent 70th- for Costa Rica that was disallowed for offside and came away with a red-very-white-and-blue victory. , in goal because was injured, slid in the snow after balls like a kid in a park.

“You don’t want to stop it. You want to keep that advantage and finish it off,” U.S. coach said.

After wasting an early lead and losing their final-round opener last month at Honduras, the Americans were under pressure to come up with a win, especially with their next game Tuesday at Mexico. Dempsey’s 16th- lifted them from last place in the six- to second, one point behind Honduras, which rallied from two goals down for a 2-2 tie at home against Mexico.

The U.S. extended its home unbeaten streak in qualifying to 23 games over a dozen years (21-0-2).

The gametime temperature of 30 degrees — 54 below the start temperature for the 2-1 loss at Honduras last month, when the Americans withered in the heat and humidity as the match went on.

When DaMarcus Beasley slid on his back following a collision, he formed a bit of a snow angel.

“It almost looked like he grew up in the snow,” Klinsmann said about the Indiana native.

Klinsmann, criticized earlier in the week in a Sporting News story citing unidentified players and others close to the team, used his 24th lineup in 24 matches since replacing Bob Bradley. With eight players out because of injuries and illness, the 30-year-old Beasley was at left back for the first time since 2009, when he made his previous international competitive start. Cameron was shifted to right back and Omar Gonzalez and Clarence Goodson started in central defence in front of Guzan, who made his first start since November 2010. Landon Donovan remains absent on sabbatical.

“We were able to come together when we needed to,” Dempsey said.

Dempsey, a tough Texan who didn’t wear gloves in the first half, became captain when Carlos Bocanegra was dropped because of inaction with his club in Spain and Howard broke two bones in his back. Dempsey’s only previous experience with the armband was three years ago, during the second half of an exhibition against Colombia.

He scored after Jozy Altidore’s 19-yard shot deflected off Roy Miller, the defender who has struggled this season with Major League Soccer’s New York Red Bulls. The ball bounced toward Dempsey, whose right-footed shot from in front went in for his seventh goal in in qualifying for Brazil and his 12th career score in qualifying. Used to wet weather in England’s Premier League, Dempsey got his 32nd goal in 92 appearances,

The U.S. appealed to referee Joel Aguilar of El Salvador for a penalty kick after Miller tripped Dempsey in the 42nd but was denied.

(PhatzRadio / ) — Three months after its NASCAR future was thrown into by ’s to Ford, Dodge still seems without a firm plan for Sprint Cup in 2013.

Recent reports have linked the manufacturer to an IndyCar team moving into Cup and suggested Dodge could make an announcement in two weeks at . But a Dodge executive said in a Wednesday statement to that nothing has been finalized.

“We identified a process for the evaluation of the 2013 NASCAR program,” said Beth Paretta, director of marketing and operations for Dodge’s SRT brand and motor . “We are continuing to follow that process and are within our established timeline. We’re pleased with the number of inquiries that have been received about the Dodge motor and continue the evaluation process. As decisions are made, we will announce them at that time.”

Aside from not having any teams in its 2013 lineup, Dodge also hasn’t settled on an engine builder. The manufacturer could cut a deal to keep receiving motors from Penske’s shop or could start its own engine room.

Because such a critical piece hasn’t been solidified, it has raised questions about the NASCAR commitment of Italy’s Fiat, which acquired Dodge’s parent company, Chrysler, three years ago.

In the past year, Dodge has branched into motor sports with younger demographics than NASCAR, such as motocross and Global RallyCross. Action sports superstar drives a Dodge Dart (which recently was relaunched) in RallyCross.

“It’s clear that the enthusiasts in Auburn Hills (Mich.) led by SRT chief are very much interested in continuing the Dodge NASCAR program,” said Peter De Lorenzo, editor of the AutoExtremist.com website and a auto industry consultant with 35 years in the business. “But it’s also just as clear that key Fiat executives remain unconvinced as to the validity of NASCAR’s return on their investment.”

With nearly all of NASCAR’s powerhouse teams locked up in long-term deals with Chevrolet, Ford or Toyota, the options in Cup are limited for Dodge. A FoxSports.com report last month listed Andretti Autosport as a candidate.

Andretti Autosport spokesman Jade Gurss wouldn’t comment directly on the NASCAR reports but said the Izod IndyCar Series team, which fields Dallara-Chevrolets for Marco Andretti, James Hinchcliffe and Ryan-Hunter Reay, is “aggressively looking to diversify our business, and that’s why we seriously analyze each business opportunity.” Andretti’s sports marketing division has branched into promoting IndyCar races this season at Milwaukee and Baltimore.

Current Cup teams without a manufacturer deal for next year include Richard Petty Motorsports, Furniture Row Racing and Front Row Motorsports. Furniture Row and RPM declined to comment. Last month, owner Richard Petty cast doubt on his team’s future with Dodge. “I think they’re pretty confused, because they got a plug pulled out of them and wasn’t really expecting it,” he said. “I would imagine they’re going to have to sit down and have some prayer meetings to figure out really what they’re going to do.”

Front Row general manager Jerry Freeze told his team had informal talks with Dodge “but nothing of substance” since the March 1 announcement of Penske’s switch to Ford.

“The feedback is generally they have decisions to make on where they’re going to be in the sport next year,” Freeze said. “I don’t know if they’d have interest in our team, not that we’re terribly unhappy with our deal with Ford. We’d like to be a little better, but Ford still is very beneficial from a technology standpoint.”

Given the horsepower of Roush Yates Racing engines is considered tops in NASCAR, Freeze said his team wouldn’t be interested in a lateral move from Ford, which has more lucrative contracts with Roush Fenway Racing and RPM. “Front Row in the overall food chain of NASCAR still has a pretty good deal,” Freeze said. “But we have to look at what’s best for us, and if someone offered more substance, i.e. cash, it’d need to be looked at.”

Time is growing short on a decision because of NASCAR’s switch to a new model next year. The car’s bodies will require new templates and pieces, and the team is planning to build chassis starting Oct. 1, several weeks earlier than in past seasons. “With the old body, you could drag it out the first of January and still make some updates, but now I don’t see how you can wait,” Freeze said. “The longer you do, the further you get behind.”

NHRA to New England: The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series will expand in the northeast next year, adding a June 23 event at New England Dragway in Epping, N.H.

(PhatzRadio / ) — Dale Earnhardt Jr. joked on his team radio last fall at that if NASCAR raced on more short tracks, he might be considered a “dirty driver.”

The converse also might be true: If the Series raced on as many superspeedways (where contact at high speeds is frowned upon), perhaps gritty veterans such as Earnhardt’s father and wouldn’t have been regarded as rough-and-tumble racers.

“There were so many short tracks on the circuit then,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “That led to more consistently . Go to any short track in the nation, and that’s the driving you expect to see. That’s what you saw in the . Now that we’re running the mile-and-a-halves, our nature is toned down quite a bit.

“We saw an exciting race at Martinsville (last fall) with guys running all over and fighting all day long. We need those venues. Short-track racing is so much fun, and I have a blast and enjoy the hell out of it and love Martinsville.”

NASCAR’s premier series will return to its shortest track with Sunday’s Goody’s Fast Relief 500, and there are many reasons for Earnhardt to be feeling chipper about the 0.526-mile oval. He finished second a year ago at Martinsville, his third-best track (behind and ) in average finish at 13.0. He also has the fifth-best driver rating there behind multiple Martinsville winners , Jeff Gordon, and Tony Stewart.

Having conquered the circuit’s other two short tracks — Bristol and Richmond International Raceway — Earnhardt still seeks his first victory at Martinsville.

But there are signs his 134-race winless streak could end soon. He is third in the Cup standings, and there is a swagger and self-assuredness in his interviews in his second year with crew chief Steve Letarte.

“I feel the best I’ve felt — personally and confidence-wise — as I can remember in a long time,” Earnhardt said. “Probably since 2004 when we won (a career-high six) races.”

Earnhardt had a win in his sights last year when Kevin Harvick passed him with four laps remaining.

Though he lamented not putting up more of a fight at the time (“I was meant to win that damn race,” he said afterward), he has stopped second-guessing himself.

“I don’t know what I could have done other than probably get myself wrecked blocking (Harvick) or wreck him and probably get wrecked by someone behind him,” he said. “I don’t think I could have done anything different that would have made a better outcome for me. If I would have done anything different, the outcome likely would have been worse.”

A judge justifies the captain’s by saying he is not a
plan to blast more access holes in the hull Wednesday
At least 11 people have been confirmed dead, according to officials

Giglio, Italy () — With bitterly and frigid waters, the chances of finding more survivors of the Costa Concordia appeared to dim Wednesday as at least two dozen people remain missing from a doomed Italian cruise ship.

At least 11 people have died since the Costa Concordia ran aground and capsized last week off a Tuscan island. About two dozen are missing.

suspended operations Wednesday morning as the ship began to move, the Italian Coast Guard said. The search for survivors has been halted and restarted several times since the ship rolled onto its side Friday night.

Rescuers are planning to blast more holes in the ship Wednesday to allow divers easier access to the interior of the ship.

But experts say chances of finding survivors are slim.

“I think you have to look at several issues. One is just the hypothermia. If a compartment is flooded, even if there was air, at this point, most of them would have succumbed to the hypothermic problem of the water temperature,” said Butch Hendrick, president of the diving safety company Lifeguard Systems.

When asked if rescuers would find any survivors, Hendrick said, “I’m sorry to say this, but I don’t… I don’t believe there are. I’m sorry.”

But Kevin Rebell Russel, whose brother Terence was a member of the crew, refused to give up hope Wednesday.

“Miracles do happen and let’s keep hope. I’m not here to lose hope,” he said.

His brother was last seen helping passengers into lifeboats Friday night.

Questions remain over what happened in the waters around the island of Giglio, and especially the actions of Capt. Francesco .

Prosecutor Fransceso Vesuvio accused the captain of piloting the ship too fast to allow him to react to dangers, causing the shipwreck, according to legal papers.

Judge Valeria Montesarchio’s intial ruling says Schettino changed the ship’s course, steering too close to shore and causing the ship to hit a rock.

Schettino, who may be charged with manslaughter, shipwreck and abandoning ship, was transferred to house arrest overnight, his lawyer Bruno Leporatti said early Wednesday.

Vesuvio said the decision to let Schettino out of jail left him “speechless.”

But Montesarchio justified the decision on the grounds that the captain was not a flight risk and there was no danger of his interfering with evidence or committing the crime again.

Schettino was arrested after leaving the ship while dozens were still aboard, panicked and fighting for lifeboats.

“I am absolutely shocked. Shocked at his behavior,” said passenger Alex Beach of New Mexico, who escaped the crippled cruise ship with her husband. “As a passenger that was relying on him and the rest of his upper officers to steer this ship, it’s quite alarming.”

The shipping industry newspaper Lloyd’s List reported that Friday was not the first time the Costa Concordia steamed extremely close to shore near Giglio.

Satellite tracking data obtained by the paper shows that the ship passed within 230 meters (251.5 yards) of the coast of the island at least once before — even closer than the location where the Costa Concordia hit the rocks this weekend.

The pass happened on August 14, 2011, Lloyd’s List reported.

Costa Cruise lines said it would issue a statement about the report later on Wednesday.

In transcripts of conversations between Schettino and the Italian coast guard, published by the Italian daily newspaper Corriere della Sera, the captain gives conflicting accounts of what happened when the ship hit rocks Friday night just off Italy’s western coast, leading to what passengers described as a chaotic and surreal scene as they rushed to evacuate.

At first, Schettino tells an official he had abandoned the vessel, according to the transcripts, which prosecutors say match those used in their investigation.

But as the official questions his decision, Schettino appears to reverse himself and say he had not abandoned ship but was “catapulted into the water” after the ship ran into a rock, began taking on water and started listing.

In a later conversation, an Italian coast guard official demands Schettino return to his ship, the transcripts show.

“You get on board! This is an order!” the coast guard official instructed Schettino.

“You have declared ‘Abandon ship.’ Now I’m in charge. You get on board — is that clear?” the port official said.

Rescuers found five bodies Tuesday but it was unclear how many people are missing. There were roughly 4,200 people on the Costa Concordia when it ran aground — about 3,200 passengers and 1,000 crew members, the vast majority of whom made it off the ship safely.

Before the discovery of the five bodies Tuesday, authorities had said 29 people were missing; 14 Germans, six Italians, four French citizens, two Americans, and one each from Hungary, India and Peru. There was some confusion Tuesday on the number of missing Germans, according to the German Foreign Ministry.

One person on the list of missing was found dead Monday, but authorities have not specified the nationality.

A friend of two missing Americans, Gerald and Barbara Ann Heil of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, said their family is “holding up very well” despite the agonizing wait for word from Italy, where the retired couple had gone for “their trip of a lifetime” after raising four children and working in their community for years.

St. Pius X Catholic Church will hold a Wednesday evening prayer service for the couple, according to CNN affiliate KARE. The Heils were on a 16-day vacation to Italy, with a planned visit to the Vatican.

Divers are searching the skyscraper-sized ship, working underwater in pitch darkness. Italy’s Coast Guard said it has located a second “black box,” or data recorder, from the ship. Operations are under way to retrieve the recorder, said Coast Guard Warrant Petty Officer Massimo Macaroni.

Information from the device, along with another recorder that has been recovered and is being analyzed by prosecutors, will provide authorities with “a complete picture of how the disaster unfolded,” Macaroni said.

Those who made it off the vessel described the panic that ensued after the ship’s collision with the rocks.

Lauren Moore of Bowling Green, Kentucky, said many lifeboats were full when she and others reached the upper deck.

“People were crying. People were hysterical,” Moore said. “People were screaming at each other.”

Beach said she was fortunate to get into a lifeboat with her husband.

“I certainly saw chaos and there was a lot of screaming and pushing and yelling, and it became a situation of every man for themselves. And everyone was trying to get in lifeboats and there was just not enough for the passengers that were on the boat,” Beach said.

Italian prosecutors have ruled out a technical error as the cause of the incident, saying the captain was on the bridge at the time and had made a “grave error.”

Prosecutors are considering whether others may share responsibility for the crash with the captain.

Schettino had never been involved in an accident before, said Costa Cruises chairman Pier Luigi Foschi.

Foschi placed blame for the wreck squarely on the captain, saying he deviated from frequently traveled routes.

“The captain decided to change the route and he went into water that he did not know in advance,” Foschi said.

Foschi said passengers would get “material compensation for their loss,” but declined to go into details.

Christmas Day duel sees Camper lead threatened

() – Leading boats Camper and Telefonica entered the of battle in the first stage of leg two of the Volvo Ocean Race with just 12 separating them on after 13 days at sea.

The Spanish/New Zealand entry Camper were only just holding on, with overall leaders Telefonica making big in the three hours to 1000 GMT on Sunday as the two sped towards the secret port in the Indian Ocean.

The identity of the stop-off location has been kept confidential as organizers feared an attack by pirates on the state-of-the-art boats which cost around $10 million apiece to build.

First to the port will win 24 points, with 20 going to second. Camper are three points behind Telefonica on the overall leaderboard so first place would be enough to put them in front.

Camper crew member Hooper said they were trying to concentrate on the job in hand rather than the Christmas Day festivities going on at home.

“It’s Christmas Day on board Camper and unfortunately for the guys there isn’t a huge amount of energy to be put into it,” he said. “Not that they don’t want to, they have all been up throughout the entire night frantically working our way through squall after squall in what turned out to be some very hard and bumpy conditions.

“The is getting closer, and all everyone onboard Camper really cares about for Christmas is crossing it before any other boat does. Then there will be time to celebrate.”

From the secret port in the Indian Ocean, the boats will be placed on an armed ship and transported to a point near Sharjah on the Northern Emirates coast. From there they will complete leg 2 into Abu Dhabi.

In all, the Volvo Ocean Race last over and covers 39,000 nautical miles, visiting 10 countries.

Five dead after stage collapse at Ind. State Fair

( News/ ) - The crowd was poised in anticipation, including scores of people pressed up against the stage, just seconds before country music sensation Sugarland was to perform at the State Fair on Saturday night.

Above the stage, nestled in the rigging, a had taken his position, ready to shine a spotlight on the action.

But the weather near the Indiana State Fairgrounds was starting to get dicey. Backstage, State Police commander Brad Weaver was watching an ugly storm moving in on radar via his smartphone. He and fair Executive Director Cindy Hoye decided it was time to evacuate the crowd.

A minute later, when WLHK program Richards addressed the crowd, the word was that the show would go on, and that the crowd should be prepared to find shelter if things changed. Some of the crowd sensed the danger and left without further word. But the majority remained.

Seconds later, a fierce wind blew in from the direction of the midway, kicking up what one witness described as "a canopy of dust."

In a moment that described as both terrifying and in , the massive rigging above the stage bearing lights, sound equipment and at least one crew member swayed menacingly and then came crashing down on the crowd.

Five people were killed and about 40 were injured severely enough that they needed to be taken to local hospitals. More than 150 were treated at a makeshift triage unit at the fairgrounds itself. It was a fairgrounds tragedy eclipsed in scale only by a 1963 propane tank explosion at the Coliseum that killed 74 people.

Officials canceled the fair for Sunday.

Concertgoer Brittany Pangburn, 23, Carmel, saw it all happen from the Hoosier Lottery .

Seated there with some girlfriends, she saw the dust whip up, the roof of the stage twist and then come crashing down.

In the and the dust, Pangburn said all she could hear was wind -- and screams.

"It was terrifying," Pangburn said.

"It really did look like slow motion," said Jamie Roberts, 25, who came to the concert with Pangburn. "All we could do was hold hands."

Witnesses described seeing children at the scene in shock.

At Wishard Memorial Hospital, one of the places the injured were taken, ambulances stacked up outside the emergency room. Inside, people sat in wheelchairs with blood on their heads and faces as medical staff did triage.

Outside, concertgoers waiting in cowboy boots and short shorts -- the unofficial uniform of Sugarland fans -- were in tears and disbelief. Family and friends of concertgoers started jumping out of cars to look for their loved ones.

At Methodist Hospital, Jennifer McGuire, an 11-year-old Greensburg girl who had waited with her mom and sister for more than an hour to get Sugarland seats up close to the stage, said she was hit in the knee and back of the head by the falling rigging. She had blood splotches all over her clothes, including a T-shirt saying "All I want to do is hug you."

Marion County Coroner Frank Lloyd said the four victims died at the fairgrounds and were not transported to the hospital.

Medics and throughout Indianapolis converged on the State Fairgrounds. Roads in and around the fairgrounds were blocked to allow ambulances to get in and out of the track area.

About 12,000 people were at the concert.

The announcement from Richards, the WLHK program director, advised patrons that in the event the show needed to be stopped for bad weather, to seek shelter at the Pepsi Coliseum or the swine barn.

But many more remained. And it stands to reason that those least likely to leave were those who were closest to the stage, closest to the band they had come to see.

"This is as bad as it gets," a videographer for Sugarland said during the chaos that followed the collapse.

Heavy rain and winds estimated as high as 60 mph were reported from the storm after the collapse.

The grim nature of the tragedy stood in stark contrast to the music the concertgoers came to hear.

Sugarland, which mixes country and pop, serves up among the sunniest and most optimistic music on the airwaves.

Late Saturday, the band delivered a message about the disaster via Twitter: "We are all right. We are praying for our fans, and the people of Indianapolis. We hope you'll join us. They need your strength."
