(PhatzRadio / CBC Sports) — Mallorca’s hopes of avoiding relegation from the Spanish league were kept alive by a 1-0 win against on Monday.

With two rounds left, 19th-place Mallorca is three points behind 17th-place Deportivo but with an inferior .

Mallorca striker Tomer Hemed scored in the 21st minute from close to the penalty spot after goalkeeper Adrian San Miguel saved Victor Casadesus Castano’s initial shot.

Betis stayed seventh in the standings on 52 points.

Mallorca plays Atletico Madrid and Valladolid before the season ends.

Barcelona has already clinched the league title and can match Real Madrid’s 2012 record haul of 100 points by winning its last two matches.

Arsenal grabs final Champions League berth:

(PhatzRadio / CBC Sports) — Arsenal qualified for the Champions League for the 16th after edging Tottenham to fourth place in the Premier League, as Alex Ferguson bowed out as Manchester United manager with a 5-5 draw against .

’s 52nd-minute volley sealed an unconvincing 1-0 for Arsenal at Newcastle, rendering Spurs’ 1-0 victory over Sunderland — courtesy of a late screamer from Gareth Bale — meaningless.

“We celebrated a bit like we had won the championship, which was a bit weird considering the ambition at the start of the season,” said Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech , whose team won eight and drew two of its last 10 games of the campaign.

Chelsea finished third — and claimed the last automatic Champions League spot — by beating Everton 2-1 thanks to Fernando Torres’ winner in Rafa Benitez’s in charge of the Europa League champions.

With the title fight decided a month ago and three relegation spots already settled, the remaining business was bidding farewell to several icons of English football.

Ferguson was treated to a wild match at The Hawthorns in his 1,500th and last game at United, with his team surrendering a 5-2 lead in the final 10 minutes to draw. While United Paul Scholes, Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher and Stoke striker Michael Owen all played their before retiring.

“I have been here a long time and it has to come to an end sometime,” said Carragher, who ended his 717- with a clean sheet in a 1-0 win over last-place Queens Park Rangers.

There were 36 goals on the final day of the season. None better than Bale’s latest match-winner from 35 yards for Tottenham that guaranteed an extremely tense final few minutes in the race for fourth between two fierce north London .

It meant Arsenal needed to hold onto its lead at St. James Park, and when winger slid a shot against the post in injury time there was still a chance for Newcastle to muster an equalizer. It wasn’t to be for Spurs, though, who missed out on the Champions League on the final day for a second season running.

“It was the most nervous I have ever been,” said. “We had to dig deep. No one (outside Arsenal) believed we could do this.”

Gareth Bale’s Tottenham future uncertain

Tottenham was in third place and seven points clear of Arsenal after winning the north London derby in March. But not even Bale’s stream of match-winning goals in recent weeks could hold off Arsenal’s end-of-season resurgence, just like last season.

“It is difficult to take. In the end we did what we had to, but Arsenal did their job well and go through,” Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas said. “It is difficult at this moment.”

To make matters worse for Spurs, failing to reach the Champions League will undoubtedly increase the speculation surrounding the future of Bale, who has been linked with many of the world’s top teams after a brilliant season in which he won English football’s Player of the Year award.

After the last game of his trophy-filled reign of almost 27 years, Ferguson went over to bow to the United fans who had backed him as he waited until 1990 to win the first of 38 trophies for the club. The Scot brought Scholes on as a 69th-minute substitute for his 718th match, but a second-half hat trick from Romelu Lukaku denied a farewell victory for Ferguson.

“We’re a little bit frustrated because we wanted to win it for (Ferguson) and Scholesy,” said Javier Hernandez, one of five different scorers for United. “The gaffer is certainly going to remember his last match in charge.”

At Stamford Bridge, the jeers that had characterized Benitez’s interim reign were absent when he took his place in the Chelsea dugout. Unsurprisingly so, considering the team won the Europa League title four days ago and has qualified for the group stage of the Champions League next season.

“It’s been a great experience and I will be sad to leave. It is a pity, as you can see the players are improving — but I will not be here next season” said the unemotional Spaniard, who declined to join his players on a lap of honour. “I have received hundreds of message from Chelsea fans saying thank you.”

His rivalry as Liverpool manager with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho left Benitez a highly unpopular figure among Blues fans. But his success in also steering the team to FA and League Cup semifinals contributed to an air of appreciation in his final match at the London club.

“Thank you Rafa, we forgive you” read a banner from one young supporter.

Second-place Manchester City lost 3-2 at home to Norwich, while Philippe Coutinho’s superb first-half strike earned Liverpool victory at Anfield. Carragher hit the post with a 40-yard shot after the break.

Kevin Nolan scored a hat trick in West Ham’s 4-2 win over Reading, and Owen rounded off his illustrious career by playing the final 16 minutes for Stoke in a 1-1 draw at Southampton.

“I had one chance and a couple of touches. I was pleased to get out there and say my farewell in one piece,” said Owen, whose career is better known for spells with Liverpool, Real Madrid and Man United. “It has been a pleasure to play this game.”

Also, Fulham won 3-0 at Swansea and relegated Wigan drew 2-2 at home to Aston Villa.

(PhatzRadio / ) became the only team to beat twice in the league under as it secured a 3-2 victory over the newly-crowned Serie A champion on Saturday.

Eder, Lorenzo De Silvestri and Mauro Icardi helped come from behind after Fabio Quagliarella had scored against his old team.

Emanuele Giaccherini reduced the deficit in .

Earlier, Sassuolo clinched promotion to Serie A for the first time in its history, finishing as Serie B champions following a last-gasp 1-0 victory over third-placed Livorno.

Hellas Verona joined Sassuolo as runners-up after a goalless draw against fourth-place Empoli.

A playoff involving the teams which finished third to sixth will determine the third team to get promoted.

The only Serie A game to take place on Saturday was at , with the nine of the season all taking place on Sunday.

Juventus took the lead in the 25th minute when Quagliarella controlled a delightful long ball over the defence from and slotted it into the bottom right corner.

Samp drew level later when it was handed a penalty after Giorgio Chiellini was adjudged to have pulled back Icardi. Eder converted, drilling into the bottom left corner.

De Silvestri headed in a corner to put Samp in front in the 58th, moments after a fingertip save from goalkeeper Junior Da Costa had denied Simone Padoin after the Juventus had been sent clear through.

Iscardi bundled in Marcelo Estigarribia’s cross from in the 75th to extend Sampdoria’s advantage.

There was another moment of controversy minutes later as the referee awarded Juventus but then changed his mind, apologizing to the players and repeatedly saying “I made a mistake.”

Chiellini protested vehemently as Shkodran Mustafi appeared to have clattered into Quagliarella.

Juventus was left in 10 men for the final minutes as substitute Nicklas Bendtner had to come off after landing heavily on his arm. Conte had already made his three changes.

It still managed to pull one back at the death as Giaccherini volleyed in Stephan Lichtsteiner’s cross.

Elsewhere, Simone Missiroli scored the decisive goal for Sassuolo with practically the last kick of the game after his team had been reduced to nine men, while Livorno also had a player sent off.

Sassuolo defender Luca Antei was sent off shortly before the hour after picking up his second . Livorno goalkeeper Vincenzo Fiorillo was then shown a straight red 15 minutes from full time for throwing Domenico Berardi to the ground, and the Sassuolo striker was also sent off his reaction.

Sassuolo is a small town of around 40,000 inhabitants, near Modena in northern Italy, and its team was playing in the fourth division seven years ago. It was steered into Serie B in 2008, under current AC Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri.

It had lost in the playoff in two of the previous three seasons. Livorno and Empoli will host Brescia and Novara respectively in the playoff semifinals.

The three promoted teams will replace Pescara, Siena and Palermo, which have been relegated from Serie A.

Sociedad, Valencia continue battle for 4th place: La Liga

(PhatzRadio / ) — Real Sociedad came back to win 2-1 at Sevilla and Valencia beat Getafe 1-0 on Saturday as both teams remained locked on points in their fight for a fourth-place finish in the Spanish league.

Sociedad remained ahead of fifth-place Valencia on head-to-head goal difference and in control of Spain’s last Champions League spot with two rounds to go.

The Basque side fell behind 10 minutes in at Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium when Sevilla midfielder Ivan Rakitic slotted in a back pass from Geoffrey Kondogbia.

But Rakitic’s own goal when he headed a into his team’s net in the 16th levelled the score, and striker Imanol Agirretxe swept in Carlos Martinez’s lobbed pass to give Sociedad the lead for good in the 24th with his 13th goal of the season.

Both sides created several chances in the second half, but neither could finish them off.

Sevilla’s Jose Antonio Reyes was dismissed after halftime with a direct red card for protesting a decision by the line judge while warming up on the sideline.

“We’re happy because it’s very hard to win here,” said Sociedad coach Philippe Montanier. “In their previous nine home games only Atletico (Madrid) had won here. It was a tough game. We played well in the first half, and then in the second we tried to sit farther back and score on the break. But we had difficulties with their set pieces and had to hold on until the end.”

Valencia outplayed Getafe throughout but only edged past the hosts thanks to Jeremy Mathieu’s first-half goal.

Mathieu scored with a deft volley off a pass from Ever Banega in the 44th, firing the ball into the net from outside the area.

Getafe never threatened to draw at its Alfonso Perez Coliseum, with goalkeeper Miguel Moya saving the hosts from a heavier defeat.

Valencia coach Ernesto Valverde, who after taking over has led the team up the table to challenge for a berth in Europe’s top-tier competition, played coy when asked if he was any closer to extending his contract past this season.

“I don’t know if I’m going to have a meeting next week (with the club),” Valverde said. “The most important thing now is the game against Granada. If I speak or not with the club could be interesting to the general public, (but) if I consider that transmitting knowledge of it would hurt the team I won’t say anything.”

Elsewhere, Granada went a long way toward ensuring its third straight season in the first division by rolling over 10-man Osasuna 3-0 after Brazilian defender Siqueira set up one goal and scored another.

Siqueira passed for unmarked striker Youssef El Arabi to poke the ball under goalkeeper Andres Fernandez for Granada’s first goal in the 23rd.

He then converted a penalty kick in the “Panenka” chipped style in the 80th after Fernando “Nano” Macedo was sent off when he fouled Yacine Brahimi from behind with only the goalie to beat. Diego Buonanotte added the hosts’ third goal in .

Granada stayed undefeated in five consecutive games and rose seven points clear of the relegation zone, while Osasuna was left four points above the drop before three of the four teams below it in the standings play this round.

On Sunday, new league champion Barcelona plays Valladolid without injured top scorer Lionel Messi. Barcelona can match ’s record haul of 100 points from last season if it wins its remaining three matches.

Also on Sunday, it’s: Levante vs. Rayo Vallecano, Real Zaragoza vs. Athletic Bilbao, and Deportivo La Coruna vs. .

Last-place Mallorca hosts Real Betis on Monday.

Madrid, Atletico, Malaga, and Celta Vigo already played their fixtures for this round last week to make room in the calendar for the Copa del Rey final on Friday, when Atletico beat Madrid 2-1 in extra time for its 10th cup.

Atletico celebrated its first win over its crosstown rivals in 26 matches dating back to 1999 with a parade through the Spanish capital on Saturday.

In the second division, Elche earned promotion on Saturday after Alcorcon drew 1-1 at Barcelona B.

(PhatzRadio / ) —- The trophy was supposed to be coach ’s parting gift for Real Madrid, or at least a after a season that will be remembered for his abrasive antics and his team’s failure to win .

Instead, Atletico Madrid ended a 14-year winless run against its city rival by taking the title on Friday, coming from behind for a cathartic 2-1 win in extra time after Mourinho and his star forward Cristiano Ronaldo were sent off.

Brazilian defender Miranda headed in Jorge “Koke” Resurrecion’s cross in the eighth minute of extra time to give Atletico its 10th Copa del Rey title and first since 1996.

“This is for our fans that have suffered for 14 years,” Atletico’s captain Gabi Fernandez said moments before he received the trophy from Spain’s . “This team worked hard for this and deserved it.”

Ronaldo appeared to have put Madrid on its way to yet another victory over its crosstown when he headed in a goal in the 14th minute. But Atletico refused to fold and Radamel Falcao set up Diego Costa to level 10 minutes before halftime.

Mourinho was sent off for protesting a decision in the 76th. Likely heading back to England in the off-season, he will finish his in Madrid without a title after it lost the Spanish league to Barcelona and bowed out of the Champions League semifinals.

“This is my worst season. I have never not won an important title. You can say I failed this season,” Mourinho said. “With one final, a semifinal, a second-place finish, and a , for many other coaches it would have been a good season. For me it’s the worst.”

Mourinho repeated that he would decide his future with Florentino Perez after the season ends in early June, although there is strong expectation he will return to former .

Red card for Ronaldo

The final was a vibrant match but not without its ugly side.

Ronaldo received a straight red card for kicking Gabi in the face in the 114th, setting off a sideline scuffle between the benches.

Atletico Thibaut Courtois was struck in the head by an object thrown from the Santiago Bernabeu stands shortly afterward.

Atletico also ended the match with 10 men when Gabi was sent off seconds before the final whistle for a second yellow card. But that came too late to prevent a victory that even the coach acknowledged was a lucky one, with Madrid’s shots repeatedly hitting the frame of the goal.

“We had the good fortune that a champion needs,” said Atletico coach Diego Simeone, who added the cup to the Europa League title won last year. “What these players have done for the past year and a half is amazing. I don’t have words for it.”

Following years of frustration and accumulated doubt after failing to beat Madrid in 25 games since 1999, Atletico had to overcome an opening goal by Ronaldo.

Ronaldo, who scored the extra-time winner that beat Barcelona and gave Madrid the 2011 Copa title, looked set to play the starring role once again when he rose over a defender to head in Luka Modric’s corner and net his 55th goal of the season.

But the Portugal forward let the emotion of the game’s final minutes get the best of him, hurting his side when he left it a man down just when it most needed his help.

Mourinho spent the game in the dugout after being jeered before the match by both sets of fans, with the home supporters upset at his dropping of iconic goalkeeper Iker Casillas and supposed desire to return to England.

When he did emerge, he didn’t last long as the referee dismissed him for vehemently protesting a foul.

Atletico didn’t panic

Atletico held firm after Ronaldo’s opener and were rewarded with an equalizer. Falcao held off Raul Albiol’s tackle, spun with the ball, and placed a perfectly weighted pass for Diego Costa to run clear and drive a left-footed strike under ‘keeper Diego Lopez.

“Incredible,” Falcao said, on the point of tears. “We are so happy for this win. We have to enjoy this.”

Madrid came alive after Atletico equalized, and Mesut Ozil volleyed a long strike off the right post a minute from halftime.

The tension increased in the second half both in the stands and on the pitch, as Madrid began to tilt the action toward Atletico’s area and soon had two golden chances in the 61st when Karim Benzema fired a loose ball off the upright. Ozil then pounced on the rebound and with Courtois off line seemed sure to score, but defender Juanfran Torres blocked his shot on the goalline.

In the 68th it was Ronaldo’s turn to curse the goal frame when he fooled the defensive wall by slotting his at the edge of the box under Mario Suarez as he jumped, only to see it crash off the post.

“It isn’t normal to hit the post three times,” said Mourinho. “You don’t have to be an expert to think that the result wasn’t fair, that Atletico isn’t the just winner. But in football all that is forgotten, the posts, the referee, and Atletico goes down the winner.”

With Mourinho gone, Madrid assistant Aitor Karanka made all three changes at the start of extra time. But even though Madrid had the fresher legs, it was Atletico that surged back in front for good.

Lopez saved Diego Costa’s back-to-back tries in the 95th, but he couldn’t stop Miranda from meeting an out-swinging cross to score at the near post by nodding the ball under the goalkeeper and into the net to send the fans clad in red and white into ecstasy.

Madrid wasn’t done and only Courtois’ goalkeeping protected its lead with stops to deny Gonzalo Higuain in the 104th and then Ozil in four minutes into the second added period when he stretched to deflect his close-range shot over the bar.

Soccer: English FA approves minimum 5-game ban for racist abuse

(PhatzRadio / ) — Racist and homophobic abuse by players in England will carry a minimum five-match ban from next season.

The Football Association says the sanction will be the entry-level punishment for the least serious discriminatory offences, with longer bans possible.

The FA Council agreed Thursday to the sanctions first reported by The Associated Press on Monday.

For second offences, there will be a minimum 10-, which UEFA has urged national associations in Europe to implement as the absolute minimum for players found guilty of .

FA chairman says “any racism is unacceptable, but there are different levels of offence.”

English clubs that have two or more players found guilty of discrimination offences within a 12-month period will also face charges and could even have points deducted in the standings.

Sepp Blatter blasts Italian officials for not investigating racist chants

(PhatzRadio / ) — FIFA President Sepp Blatter says he will protest to Italian over a decision to only fine Roma the equivalent of $65,000 US after their fans racially abused AC Milan players.

Play was stopped for almost two minutes during the second half of Sunday’s game when visiting Roma supporters would not stop chanting at Milan players Mario Balotelli and Kevin-Prince Boateng.

Warnings issued over the stadium speaker system went unheeded, leading to a Serie A match being suspended due to racism for the first time.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter has put renewed vigor into the fight against racism since Milan midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng led his teammates off the pitch when he was racially abused during an exhibition game against an Italian fourth-tier side in January.

Blatter is unhappy that the latest case was so quickly wrapped up by Italian soccer officials, while branding “small fines for racist abuse unacceptable.”

“What is surprising and is not understandable for me, is that the disciplinary committee of the Federation has taken a decision, not even 24 hours after the event, by just imposing a fine,” Blatter said Tuesday on FIFA’s website. “They have not made any investigation of what happened. And just to give a pecuniary sanction is not valid, that is not acceptable. You will always find money.

“What is 50,000 euros for such an incident? I’m not happy and I will call the Italian Federation. That’s not a way to deal with such matters.”

The Boateng incident in January followed a spate of racial-abuse cases in England and prompted Blatter to establish a task force to propose stricter sanctions.

In plans being presented to the FIFA Congress later this month, teams face being thrown out of competitions or even relegated if their players, officials or fans are found guilty of any form of discrimination.

“In this resolution, there are foreseen sanctions — and these sanctions must be applied all around the world,” Blatter said. “That’s why we need the congress’s decision. That will bind together all the 209 associations.

“I’m looking forward to that and I do hope, that there we will be no other incidents until the 30 May, when we will deal with this matter in Mauritius … I appeal to everybody for a little more discipline and respect.”

UEFA, at its congress in London next week, will ask its 53 members to adopt a series of tougher racism sanctions.

UEFA wants a partial stadium closure to be imposed on clubs if there is racism in the stands — rather than just a fine for a racist offense. If there are further incidents, UEFA is advocating clubs being forced to play matches behind closed doors.

A 10-game minimum ban for players found guilty of racist abuse is also being proposed.

The is looking to push through its own plans for a five-game minimum ban for racist abuse at its own annual general meeting this week.

In England in recent years, Liverpool striker Luis Suarez received an eight-match ban for racially abusing an opponent and Chelsea captain John Terry was suspended for four matches.

(PhatzRadio / ) — Branislav Ivanovic scored with an header on Wednesday to give Chelsea a 2-1 win over Benfica in the Europa League final and secure the club’s second European title in as many seasons after winning last year’s Champions League.

The Serbian defender rose at the far post to send a looping header over Benfica Artur from a Juan Mata corner to seal the match in the 93rd minute.

“It’s a great feeling. This team deserved this, because we have had a very and a lot of games,” Ivanovic said. “In the end, today was a very hard game and Benfica played very well. … We deserve that trophy.”

A gave Chelsea the lead on the hour mark and Oscar Cardozo levelled from the penalty spot eight minutes later — setting the stage for Ivanovic’s last-gasp decider.

It was a special moment too for Chelsea’s Rafa Benitez, who has faced bitter criticism from the club’s own fans since replacing in November.

“That was a great performance in the second half, against a very good team,” Benitez said. “I’m really pleased for the players and everyone involved.”

Chelsea won despite playing without two key players, Belgium midfielder Eden Hazard and veteran , who both picked up injuries in Sunday’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Aston Villa. It was the second year running that Terry had to sit out a European final — he was suspended for last year’s Champions League decider and could only look on as his team beat on penalties.

Terry stripped down to his Chelsea kit to join his teammates in their celebrations after the match.

“It’s been an amazing time for all of us involved,” said who wore the captain’s armband in Terry’s absence.” Talk about ups and downs in the last two years! But this is a big up.”

Heartbreaking loss

The last-minute defeat in front of 46,163 fans at the Amsterdam Arena meant more heartache for Benfica, which has not lifted a European trophy since 1962 when a promising 20-year-old striker called Eusebio fired in two goals to power his team to a 5-3 victory over , also in Amsterdam. Since that victory, Benfica has now lost all six European finals it reached and Eusebio was on hand to watch the latest defeat.

It was a second crushing late loss for Benfica in just a matter of days. On Saturday, Porto’s Kelvin scored in stoppage time for a 2-1 win that moved his team to the top of the Portuguese league with one game left.

Benfica was left ruing missed chances early in both halves, when the Portuguese team overpowered Chelsea, but could not convert its domination into goals.

Cardozo and Eduardo Salvio both had shots blocked in the penalty area in an 11th-minute scramble and Nicolas Gaitan fired over the bar a minute later.

Rodrigo was the next to come close for Benfica, but he slipped as he looked set to open the scoring in the 15th minute and scuffed his shot.

Artur then pulled off a miraculous save to deny Chelsea’s newly minted all-time top scorer Lampard in the 38th minute.

Lampard unleashed a powerful right foot drive from outside the area and the swerving ball wrong-footed the goalkeeper, but he managed to stick out his left hand and deflect the ball over the bar.

Just after the break Chelsea again had to hang on as Benfica poured forward.

But Torres, who has struggled to find the net consistently for Chelsea since his 2011 transfer from Liverpool, finally broke the deadlock in the 60th minute.

The Spaniard collected the ball just inside Benfica’s half, used his strength to turn and wrestle past Ezequiel Garay and then beat captain Luisao before rounding Artur and calmly slotting in the net from a tight angle.

He sprinted to the corner and struck a Usain Bolt-style pose in front of the Chelsea fans.

Chelsea’s lead only lasted eight minutes before Cesar Azpilicueta handled the ball just inside the area and Cardozo smashed in the penalty to bring Benfica level.

Both sides had chances in the closing stages, with Petr Cech tipping over a dipping left-foot Cardozo volley and Lampard firing a long-range shot onto the bar in the 88th minute before Ivanovic’s match winning header five minutes later.

(PhatzRadio / ) — Wigan is going to be relegated to the League Championship, while Arsenal seemingly is heading back to the Champions League.

Drained after winning the FA Cup for the first time on Saturday, Wigan crashed back to earth with a 4-1 loss at Arsenal on Tuesday to be relegated after eight seasons in the Premier League.

“The FA Cup is an achievement we will never lose as a club. It is our first , but it is a real shame it happens in the same season as relegation,” Wigan manager said. “You don’t normally get teams good enough to win the cup going down.”

In fact, it has never happened to an FA in the same season.

Meanwhile, Arsenal reclaimed fourth place to sit a point above Tottenham going into the final round of matches on Sunday.

, in its first game since was fired, swept to a 2-0 victory at already-relegated Reading to secure second spot after having already conceded its league title to .

Mancini’s in charge of City was the surprise 1-0 loss to Wigan at Wembley Stadium.

Now Wigan is going from the highest point in its 81-year history to one of its lowest.

“It’s not one of the things to be too sad about — it’s the opposite,” Martinez said. “It’s time to look back — to have eight seasons at this level is incredible … it’s time to be proud of what we’ve done in eight seasons and the with the FA Cup.”

Wigan conceded after just 11 minutes, with Lukas Podolski from ’s corner, but levelled just before half time from Shaun Maloney’s free kick.

Wigan posed a threat at the start of the second half but was denied by Wojciech before Arsenal became a more ruthless attacking unit.

Theo nudged Arsenal in front in the 63rd minute from Cazorla’s cross and Podolski clipped in another five minutes later.

Aaron Ramsey completed Wigan’s misery in the 71st.

“We have conceded far too many goals,” Martinez reflected on the season. “Going forward we have been magnificent, I think it’s been our best season in terms of performances, but the injuries in the back line are something I have never seen before.

“To have four, five, even six players missing in the back line and our keeper affected with injury – our captain Antolin Alcaraz, Ivan Ramis out for the season, Ben Watson with a broken leg, (Jean) Beausejour, (Maynor) Figueroa.

“We have to have so many different partnerships and keep changing, and that caused us problems.”

Arsenal, having made its worst start to a season since Arsene Wenger took charge in 1996, now looks like heading back into the Champions League going into Sunday’s finale at Newcastle.

“It is all open, but it depends on our result,” Wenger said. “Even third place is not out of sight if we win the game.

“I am confident because we have experience, we play for a long time under massive pressure and we have always found the solutions with the problems that we have faced.”

City’s final match against Norwich will come at the end of a week of difficult week for City, which is now preparing to appoint Mancini’s replacement before resuming the search for silverware next season.

It was a routine victory in Reading for interim manager Brian Kidd.

A slick routine from a corner between Gareth Barry, David Silva and James Milner led to the ball being played across for Sergio Aguero to powerfully strike into the net in the 40th.

The win was wrapped up in the 88th by Edin Dzeko after Silva slipped the ball through the substitute.

“It’s all credit to the players— they are the ones who have had to put up with stuff off the pitch,” Kidd said. “I am pleased for them because it would have been a travesty if we hadn’t finished second.

Reading and Wigan are joining Queens Park Rangers back in the second tier next season.

Lionel Messi to miss 3 weeks with leg injury

(PhatzRadio / )
— FC Barcelona says Lionel Messi will be sidelined for up to three weeks after re-aggravating his right hamstring strain, an injury that has hampered his ability to play over the past six weeks.

The club says tests performed Tuesday revealed the muscle strain.

Messi first injured his hamstring on April 2 in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals against Paris Saint-Germain and re-aggravated the injury in Sunday’s 2-1 win at Atletico Madrid.

Messi was making his first league start since the injury, but he left the field in the 68th minute after Barcelona had made all three substitutions and was trailing 1-0.

The team rallied without him.

(PhatzRadio / ) — FIFA president was “appalled” when he learned that ’s match against Roma was suspended because of racist chanting.

Sunday’s game was stopped for 97 seconds during the second half when visiting Roma supporters would not stop chanting at Milan players Mario Balotelli and Kevin-Prince Boateng.

“Appalled to read about in Serie A last night,” Blatter tweeted Monday. “Tackling this issue is complex, but we’re committed to action, not just words.”

Blatter added that FIFA’s taskforce against racism and discrimination is “serious about devising a unified approach for FIFA’s 209 members.”

Referee Gianluca Rocchi made the decision to suspend the match briefly after warnings issued over the stadium speaker system went unheeded. Roma captain Francesco Totti had also attempted to calm the fans to no avail.

Balotelli was born in Italy to Ghanian immigrants and is the star forward of Italy’s national squad. Boateng was born in Germany to a and a Ghanian father and plays for Ghana’s national team.

The match at Milan’s ended 0-0.

Roma general director Franco Baldini contested whether the were racist.

“The were directed at Balotelli because he’s a feared player,” Baldini said, according to the Gazzetta dello Sport. “The nature of the was not clear. And I clearly heard the chanting ‘romano ’ — ‘roman bastard’ — which is just as discriminatory. It’s difficult to figure out where the border is between or simple boos.”

This was the first time a Serie A match was suspended due to racism.

In January, Boateng famously walked off the field with his teammates after enduring during a friendly against a fourth-tier .

“The perception is still that in certain areas of the stadium you can do anything,” Italian players’ association president Damiano Tommasi said. “It’s important to make those people feel more and more in the minority.

“The goal is to make people who behave poorly leave the stadium, although that’s not simple for reasons of public safety,” Tommasi added. “It’s always a very fine line between penalizing the majority of people who go to the stadium to enjoy the show and punishing the minority who ruin it. It’s not simple but it seems to me that yesterday everyone was in agreement with Rocchi’s decision.”

Soccer: Man United, Paris Saint-Germain hold championship parades

(PhatzRadio / CBC Sports) — In front of tens of thousands of flag-waving and chanting fans, Manchester United players and retiring paraded the Premier on an open-top bus through packed city streets on a second day of jubilant celebrations for the .

Supporters clambered dangerously up shop fronts, scaffolding, statues, bus stands and road signs to catch glimpses of , and, of course, Ferguson as the — bearing a “Champions 2013″ logo — wound its way from to the city centre.

Some lines were 30-people deep and many buildings had roof tops crammed with fans, some of them shirtless.

United players were spending a second day with the trophy after lifting it Sunday following the 2-1 win over Swansea — Ferguson’s final game at Old Trafford after nearly 27 years in charge.

“Yesterday was a day I’ll never forget,” said Ferguson, who waved a United flag in front of supporters before the bus departed. “All my family will never forget.

“On behalf of all my players, thanks for all your support.”

conducted the chants among the players, who jumped up and down on the top deck under . A vast led the bus along the streets, with a helicopter above.

“It feels absolutely amazing … it’s been worth the wait,” said Van Persie, the striker and top scorer who won the title in his first season with United and was serenaded by teammates. “I’ve had to wait quite a long time.”

Despite recently having a transfer request rejected by United, Rooney was present, although he received a mixed reception from fans outside Old Trafford.

Ferguson’s last game in charge is on Sunday against and it promises to be a week-long celebration in honour of Britain’s most successful manager, who has won 38 trophies for United since joining the club in 1986.

The Scot issued a challenge to his replacement, David Moyes, saying: “The big test is to win it three times in a row as they’ve done before, so I hope they can do that.”

And perhaps in one last dig at old rival Liverpool, he added: “Tomorrow night our under-21s play Liverpool — that mob across the road.”

The city centre had been awash in red for hours, with fans draped in United flags blaring hooters and car drivers honking their horns. Scarf- and flag-sellers did a roaring trade on the Deansgate thoroughfare where the bus made its way down.

The celebrations started early for Ferdinand, who posted a picture on of him and some teammates sitting in the corner of a local pub. Ferdinand had also been partying on Sunday night, tweeting at 3am on Monday: “Just rolling in the front door! Decent night out celebrating that was!”

PSG suited up for street celebration

David Beckham and his Paris Saint-Germain teammates paraded the French in celebrations at the Trocadero square Monday marking the club’s first domestic championship in 19 years.

But some fans clashed with riot police who were seeking to disperse the huge crowd after the players left following a short appearance. There was not even time for a speech from coach Carlo Ancelotti or captain Thiago Silva, who held the trophy aloft with central defensive partner Mamadou Sakho.

Dressed smartly in dark suits, the players’ appearance at a square overlooking Paris brought loud cheers from the tens of thousands of fans in attendance, some of whom stood on rooftops, lit flares or climbed scaffolding.

The celebrations were delayed by more than an hour but, having waited for their first league title since 1994, the supporters didn’t mind the wait and cheered loudly throughout.

“It’s huge, they’re happy and it’s been a long time since they waited for this,” PSG Blaise Matuidi said.

But the players hardly had time to milk the applause before they were moved on by security officials, as small groups of riot police started to move forward with the mood turning ugly. Small groups of disgruntled fans threw stones and other objects at the police, who fired tear gas canisters in response.

“There were fireworks, flares and a bit of [tear] gas flying about,” PSG defender Zoumana Camara said. “But you can understand that a bit because they [the fans] have been waiting for so long.”

The players were later scheduled to continue their festivities with a planned boat trip along the river Seine.

PSG had serious problems with hooliganism from 1985 to 2010, with two of its supporters killed in the last seven years as a result of hooligan clashes outside Parc des Prince stadium. The club then took measures to combat the problem and radically changed its ticketing policy.

PSG’s 1-0 win at Lyon on Sunday night clinched the championship with two rounds remaining.

Sporting director Leonardo did not attend the ceremony after reportedly being hospitalized overnight and treated for a stress-related ailment before being released Monday afternoon.

Leonardo was involved in a verbal with Zlatan Ibrahimovic after Sunday’s match, with television images showing the club’s top scorer shouting angrily at the sporting director in the changing room after the match.

Leonardo also faces a long ban after barging into the referee in a corridor following PSG’s 1-1 draw with Valenciennes less than two weeks ago. 14

Soccer Recap: Sir Alex bids adieu on a high note as Man U beats Swansea

f86e7dc90af4c901f414a56903b5c861 Soccer Recap: Sir Alex bids adieu on a high note as Man U beats Swansea

(PhatzRadio / ) — As red-and-white ticker tape flew into the rainy sky at , a beaming hoisted up the Premier League trophy for a 13th and final time.

Behind Britain’s most successful football manager stood his jubilant squad of players, dancing to a soundtrack of “Champions, Champions” being belted out by more than 76,000 fans.

It was the end of an era at on Sunday as Ferguson took charge of his final of a club he has led for nearly 27 years. And he had a 38th piece of major silverware to celebrate it with.

There were no tears from Ferguson — although he came close at times during an emotional five-minute speech to the crowd. Instead, just pure happiness and satisfaction. The smile never left his face.

“You have been the most fantastic experience of my life,” Ferguson said. “Thank you.

“My retirement doesn’t mean the end of my life with the club. I will be able to enjoy watching them rather than suffering with them.”

Sunday’s game against Swansea was more a party, a tribute to Ferguson’s achievements, than a football match. The was 2-1 to United, but that barely registered.

From the moment he emerged from the tunnel before to a guard of honour from both teams, to the moment he took the microphone and addressed his adoring supporters for one final time, this was one long celebration.

Old Trafford has never seen such emotions, such warmth, such an explosion of .

“I just want to say thank you once again from all the Ferguson family,” he said, pointing to his and . “Thank you. Thank you.”

Ferguson stunned the world by announcing Wednesday that he would be bringing his to a close at the end of the season. And he finally gave the reasons behind his decision, which he said he made at Christmas.

“Things changed when Cathy’s sister died,” Ferguson said in a . “She is isolated a lot now. I owe [Cathy] a lot of my . For 47 years, she has been the leader of the family, looked after our three sons, sacrificed herself for me. Now she has all her grandchildren.

“She lost her best friend, her sister Bridget, so that was important. Also, I wanted to go out a winner. That’s the most important thing I’ve wanted to be.”

The Associated Press was unable to report from Old Trafford on Sunday because of what the club said was high demand from rights holders for press tribune access. This report is based on television coverage.

Ferguson will always be a winner — 13 league titles, two Champions League titles, five FA Cups and four League Cups is testament to that. That Rio Ferdinand slammed home a volley in the 87th minute against Swansea to clinch Ferguson’s final home victory in his 1,499th game as United manager summed up the determination and drive embedded in the Scot’s teams down the years.

He began the day posing for pictures with ball boys in the depths of Old Trafford, his place of work since 1986.

‘Fergie rules’

Then came his first appearance in front of the crowd, striding through the guard of honour and applauding fans, with a sea of red flags and a mosaic with the words “Champions 2013″ providing an eye-catching backdrop.

“Fergie Rules,” read one banner. “Sir Alex – Immortal,” read another in the Stretford End.

He had almost reached the centre of the pitch before he turned to make his way to the dugout, stopping briefly to sign autographs and to wave to fans.

During the match, Ferguson was his usual self — furiously chewing gum, leaping to his feet to contest a refereeing decision, checking his watch. All the hallmarks that make Ferguson who he is.

After the fulltime whistle, he slowly made his way to the centre circle as his players and coaching staff left the stage to the man everyone had come to see.

“I have absolutely no script in my mind. I am just going to ramble on and hope I get to the core of what this football club has meant to me,” Ferguson said.

He paused throughout his speech as fans sang his name. Assistant coach Mike Phelan wiped tears from his eyes.

“If you think about it, those last-minute goals, the comebacks, even the defeats, are all part of this great football club of ours,” Ferguson said. “It’s been an unbelievable experience for all of us. So thank you for that. And also, I’d like to remind you that when we had bad times here, the club stood by me, all my staff stood by me, the players stood by me. Your job now is to stand by our new manager.”

That man, David Moyes, was about 30 miles away taking charge of his last home game as Everton manager before taking over at United on July 1. He has a near impossible task, replacing the irreplaceable.

Ferguson left the pitch to more applause and , only to return minutes later for the trophy celebration. The Premier League trophy, bedecked in black, white and red ribbons, was handed to Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic, who immediately turned to Ferguson and placed it in his hands.

For one final time, Ferguson lifted it high.

The perfect afternoon. A perfect 27 years.

Messi injury does not dampen Barcelona celebration: La Liga

(PhatzRadio / )
— Not even an injury to Lionel Messi in the 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid on Sunday could dampen Barcelona’s celebrations at winning its 22nd title.

Messi started his first match in six rounds because of a recurring right hamstring injury, but he left the field in the 68th minute with Barcelona trailing 1-0 to Radamel Falcao’s 52-minute goal and having made all three substitutions.

However, Alexis Sanchez levelled in the 72nd and Atletico midfielder Gabi Fernandez scored an own goal in the 80th to restart Barcelona’s party for winning the title that was clinched when Real Madrid drew late Saturday.

Barcelona’s hard-fought win keeps it on pace to match Madrid’s record haul of 100 points from last season. The Catalan club needs to win its remaining three matches to reach the mark.

Messi’s early finish to the match meant he finally failed to find the net after having scored in a record 21 consecutive Spanish league appearances, smashing the old milestone that stood at 10.

Atletico’s players lined up to pay tribute to Barcelona with a guard of honour before the match. But with coach Diego Simeone declining to rest his starters for the final against Madrid on Friday, it was clear they were aiming to spoil the visitors’ title celebrations.

True to style, Barcelona controlled possession in the first half, but it was unable to convert any chances.

Forward Cristian Tello went the closest when he picked up a loose ball on the left side of the area and flashed a curling strike just past the far post in first-half injury time.

Messi also threatened with his dribbling through the middle, but the Argentina forward sent his best chance on goal sailing high over the bar.

Barcelona lost right back Dani Alves to an apparent injury in the 42nd minute, with Marc Bartra replacing him.

Bartra’s poor pass led to Atletico going in front. Gabi set up Falcao after falling to the ground, leaving the Colombia striker to size up Jose Pinto and drive the ball under him for his 27th league goal this season.

When Messi walked off, seemingly to be checked by team doctors in the changing room, Atletico looked poised to seal the win as it had an extra man, the lead, and no Messi to worry about.

But Alexis linked up with Cesc Fabregas after a harmless throw-in, working a one-two combination to break down Atletico’s defence before poking the ball home.

Messi returned to the bench in street clothes to watch his teammates’ complete their comeback with a little bit of luck, David Villa’s off-target strike taking a deflection off Gabi and squeezing into the net.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Roberto Soldado scored twice to lead Valencia to a 4-0 win at Rayo Vallecano, provisionally lifting the team into fourth place and giving it control of Spain’s final Champions League berth.

Valencia moved one point ahead of Real Sociedad before the Basque club hosts Granada on Monday.

Barcelona, Madrid, and Atletico Madrid have already locked up the other three Champions League berths.

Real Betis, meanwhile, kept Celta Vigo in the relegation zone with a 1-0.

Palermo, Siena relegated: Serie A

Palermo was relegated from Serie A after losing 1-0 to Fiorentina from former player Luca Toni’s goal on Sunday.

The result left the Sicilian side five points behind 17th-place , which drew 0-0 at home to Inter Milan. With one round remaining, Torino also secured safety with a 1-1 draw at Chievo Verona. It is six points above Palermo.

Genoa’s result meant Siena was also relegated, without kicking a ball. It later lost 2-1 at second-place Napoli. Palermo and Siena join already relegated Pescara in Serie B next season.

Fiorentina moved two points behind AC Milan in the race for third spot, ensuring the battle for the Champions League qualifying spot goes down to the final round. Roma drew 0-0 at 10-man Milan in a match which was briefly suspended in the second half because of racist chanting directed at Italy striker Mario Balotelli by the visiting Roma fans.

Sulley Muntari was sent off at the end of the first half for placing his hands on the referee in an attempt to prevent the official from booking Balotelli.

Roma captain Francesco Totti was also shown a straight red card after elbowing Philippe Mexes in stoppage time.

With top-flight safety at stake, all three relegation matches kicked off at lunchtime.

Torino had slipped closer to danger after picking up just two points from the previous seven rounds and things got worse when it found itself 1-0 down inside 10 minutes.

Cyril Thereau took advantage of Valerio Di Cesare’s slip to fire across goal into the far corner from a tight angle.

However, Torino levelled nine minutes later when Alessio Cerci converted a penalty after Dario Dainelli tripped Angelo Ogbonna. Torino should have been awarded another penalty in the second half for a poor tackle by Bostjan Cesar on Ogbonna, but the referee waved away the appeals.

In Tuscany, Toni came back to haunt Palermo.

Toni scored 30 league goals in his first season at Palermo, to fire them into the top flight in 2004 for the first time in 31 years. The Italian striker then helped the side qualify for Europe before departing for his first spell at Fiorentina.

He scored four minutes from halftime. Borja Valero sent Juan Cuadrado down the right flank and his cross to the far post allowed Toni to slot home from close range. Fabrizio Miccoli’s free kick flew inches wide of the post for Palermo in the final minutes.

Injury-hit Inter had lost seven of its past nine matches to leave them out of Europe next season for the first time in 14 years. Goalkeeper Samir Handanovic kept Inter in the match with several stunning saves. And Inter almost snatched all three points when Tommaso Rocchi spun round to smash a curling shot off the crossbar.

Udinese a step closer to Europa League

Udinese moved a step closer to securing the last Europa League spot after it beat Atalanta 2-1 for a record seventh successive victory. Antonio Di Natale, who hit the crossbar in the opening minutes, scored both goals for Udinese after Giuseppe De Luca’s opener.

There was bad news for Udinese as Di Natale was stretchered off with a knee injury shortly before full time.

Lazio remained two points behind Udinese after a 2-0 win over Sampdoria.

Sergio Floccari scored the opener and Antonio Candreva sealed the result with a cheeky chipped penalty after a clumsy challenge by Daniele Gastaldello on Ogenyi Onazi.

Sampdoria’s Renan was sent off moments earlier for saying something to the referee.

Siena had been fighting against relegation since a six-point penalty for its part in the betting scandal was imposed at the beginning of the season. It was playing for little more than pride against Napoli and took the lead through Fabrizio Grillo, on his Serie A debut.

Edinson Cavani, who had hit the woodwork twice and had a goal ruled out for offside, levelled before Marek Hamsik won the match for Napoli in stoppage time.

Elsewhere, goals from Saphir Taider and Davide Moscardelli gave Bologna a 2-0 win at Parma.

Soccer Roundup: Real Madrid draw with Espanyol gives Barcelona La Liga title / Saturday’s Results

accd9c9edde5b3951744d446f726816e Soccer Roundup: Real Madrid draw with Espanyol gives Barcelona La Liga title / Saturday’s Results

(PhatzRadio / ) might have powered Barcelona to this season’s crown, but it fell to humble crosstown rival Espanyol to finally finish off Real Madrid’s with a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

So after of competition, Barcelona’s 22nd league title and fourth in five years wasn’t decided at , but rather a few miles away at Cornella-El Prat Stadium.

Madrid had staved off Barcelona’s title celebration by winning its last , but the titleholders failed to delay it any longer.

“I have to congratulate Barcelona, its coaches, players, board, and fans,” said Madrid coach Jose Mourinho. “It just won a league that was ours until today, and the least we can do is to congratulate them.”

Espanyol’s Stuani opened the scoring in the 23rd minute. Gonzalo Higuain levelled in the 58th, but Madrid couldn’t find the winner even with Cristiano going on to help.

Barcelona sealed the league with a seven-point lead and to go, and with Madrid having only six more points in play.

“The best gift, turning 29 and winning the league… the prize for the work of the entire year,” Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta, who turned 29 on Saturday, wrote on Twitter.

Crowds immediately gathered in Barcelona’s city centre to toast the trophy, and the club announced on its website that it would hold a parade on Monday to celebrate its latest piece of silverware, and its only one of the season.

But Barcelona still has something to play for in its remaining four games, starting with a trip to third-place Atletico Madrid on Sunday: winning would mean it matches Madrid’s claim to the best campaign ever from last season when it hauled in a record 100 points.

“Our first objective is to win the league,” said Barcelona coach . “Reaching 100 points isn’t a title, but now that we don’t have games midweek we can play each one in better shape. If we can go for it we will try to do so.”

Madrid’s game at Espanyol was a microcosm of its season: too little, and too late. Madrid stumbled at the start of the league campaign and then when it started to reel off wins, Barcelona was too far ahead.

Espanyol finished with 10 men after Victor Sanchez was shown a red card for a low tackle on Higuain with Madrid looking for a second goal.

Mourinho, who appears near to a return to England this summer, left Ronaldo on the bench until the 57th with his team set to play the final of the Copa del Rey on Friday against Atletico. After bowing out of the Champions League semifinals, it is Madrid’s only hope for silverware this season.

“Barcelona is the rightful champion,” said Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso. “The league is won by the most consistent team, and we had a bad start to the season that didn’t let us compete until the end.

“Our goal is [now] the Copa.”

Powerhouse

Madrid didn’t threaten the hosts’ area in the first half, and Espanyol struck with its first goal against the powerhouse in four games at its Cornella-El Prat Stadium. Stuani scooped the ball into the net from a pass by Sergio Garcia after Madrid failed to defend a corner.

Stuani almost added a second goal five minutes later when Joan Verdu played him clear, but Madrid goalkeeper Diego Lopez bettered him one-on-one.

Espanyol kept pressing and it appeared Hector Moreno scored with a header from another corner, but the referee waved it off after ruling that he fouled Alonso, who had gone on to replace the injured Raphael Varane.

Mourinho said Varane had an injury of “some seriousness” to his right knee but that more tests were needed.

With his team showing no signs of coming back, Mourinho sent on Karim Benzema for Alvaro Morata at the start of the second half. He also ordered Ronaldo to start warming up and soon threw him into the mix in place of a lacklustre Kaka.

But it fell to Higuain to equalize with a glancing header to send Luka Modric’s under goalkeeper Kiko Casilla and take his personal tally against Espanyol to 10 goals.

Madrid pushed Espanyol back into its area, but it came no closer than two free kicks by Ronaldo that sailed well high.

Also, Athletic Bilbao beat Mallorca 2-1, leaving the Balearic Islands club in last place and four points from safety, while Deportivo also stayed in the relegation zone after losing 1-0 at Valladolid.

Osasuna edged out Getafe 1-0 to end a five-game winless streak and move four points clear of the drop.

rewrites Chelsea record book: Premier League

(PhatzRadio / CBC Sports) — Frank Lampard became Chelsea’s all-time leading scorer with a double against Aston Villa on Saturday in Birmingham that clinched a 2-1 victory and pushed his club closer to Champions League qualification

From midfield, Lampard has now scored 203 goals during 12 years with Chelsea — surpassing the record held by Bobby Tambling.

“It means everything, it’s amazing,” said Lampard, who is out of contract at the end of the season. “The support I’ve had from teammates, you saw that at the end and I’m thankful to every one of them because they’re the ones that put it on a plate for me sometimes.

“And the fans, they’ve been with me for a long time and were probably frustrated alongside me not getting there so I’m just delighted.”

Christian Benteke put Villa ahead in the first half but, with both sides reduced to 10 men, Lampard started Chelsea’s comeback in the 61st minute.

The England international curled the ball from inside the area past goalkeeper Brad Guzan to equalize, and then scored the winner from close range in the 88th.

“Bobby Tambling is a great man, he’s not been well … I was pleased to level it but I didn’t want to overcook that celebration out of respect for him,” Lampard said. “But to then go and break it, I was delighted.”

Chelsea had Ramires sent off before halftime and Benteke was so dismissed in the 58th minute for receiving a second .

Chelsea is third in the Premier League with one match remaining, while Villa is five points above the relegation zone.

Villa went in front when Benteke beat Gary Cahill to goalkeeper Brad Guzan’s clearance and then peeled off at speed to take Yacouba Sylla’s return pass, gliding past Cahill and slipped his shot past goalkeeper Petr Cech at the near post in the 14th minute.

Lampard came close to scoring in the 30th, striking a low free kick that squirmed out of Guzan’s hands and rolled gently against a post. Chelsea was starting to find its feet in the game just before a series of refereeing decisions took centre stage.

The first two appeared to be lenient, with Benteke booked rather than sent off for an elbow on Cesar Azpilicueta and Terry also shown a yellow card despite appearing to be the last man when he felled Sylla.

Referee Lee Mason did show a red card just before the interval though, the struggling Ramires earning a second booking for a high challenge on Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Scores winner in 88th minute

Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez reshuffled his line-up at halftime, sending on David Luiz to anchor the midfield and taking off the ineffective Victor Moses.

Villa’s extra man lasted only until Benteke was dismissed, again for a second yellow and again for high feet.

Within two minutes the score was level and Lampard was celebrating his long-awaited record-equaling goal. Eden Hazard rolled him the ball from the right flank, he shepherded it into a more central position and then fired home a curling left-footed shot. He was duly mobbed by teammates as he ran to the away support to take in the moment.

The frenetic pace continued, with Chelsea players believing they had gone ahead not long afterward. Former Villa defender Cahill took the ball on the chest before prodding goalward at the back post. Guzan was beaten but Sylla managed to trap it on the line. Ba and Ashley Westwood both moved in, with the latter convincing officials he’d cleared the danger before the ball had crossed the line.

Terry departed on a stretcher after suffering an injury that could jeopardize his hopes of playing in the Europa League final on Wednesday against Benfica.

The winner — Lampard’s record-breaker — came from a fine Chelsea move, with Hazard playing a one-two down the left channel before cutting the ball across goal for the midfielder. As so often in his Chelsea career, Lampard was in the right place at the right time and he tapped home with ease. The celebrations which followed were both and lengthy, with all Chelsea’s players involved.

“It’s a fantastic achievement for him to score the number of goals he has,” Benitez said. “Hopefully he can score more in the next two games.”

Serie A champion earn draw with Cagliari

(PhatzRadio / CBC Sports) — Newly crowned Serie A champion Juventus was held by Cagliari to 1-1, but Saturday’s result did little to dampen spirits on the day it was presented with the trophy.

There was a party atmosphere at the Juventus Stadium and the home players walked out of the tunnel holding their children, who were wearing team kits.

Victor Ibarbo threatened to spoil the 29th title celebrations when he burst forward from his own half in the 12th minute, going between Juventus players Claudio Marchisio and Andrea Barzagli, before firing under goalkeeper Marco Storari.

It was the first goal Juventus conceded in six games.

Sebastian Giovinco almost levelled but curled a free kick onto the crossbar.

Juventus equalized after an hour. Arturo Vidal headed Marchisio’s cross back across goal for Mirko Vucinic to tap in.

It was the fourth game in a row that Vucinic scored against Cagliari.

Juve sealed a second successive title with three rounds to go last weekend.

“The lads have been the protagonists throughout these two years,” Juventus coach said. “They have done great things, which are down to their sacrifice and their will to keep their minds on the job. They have grown as a group, they are the real architects of all this.

“They have always shown they want to win. Even today, we gave everything, we put our hearts into it and we deserved to win. Winning is always difficult, you should never be satisfied though. We still have one more game and then a deserved holiday. We need to rest, recuperate and recharge the batteries.”

Later, Catania beat already-relegated Pescara 1-0.

Pescara goalkeeper Mattia Perin kept his side in the match, pulling off several fantastic saves in the first half.

Catania took the lead six minutes after the interval. Gonzalo Bergessio crossed to the far post for the onrushing Alejandro Gomez to slot home.

Pablo Barrientos also hit the post direct from a corner kick.
