NBA Reports: Dwight Howard to Lakers as part of four-team trade

eb0ece3f4e5d0edf613155fa315b9f68 NBA Reports: Dwight Howard to Lakers as part of four team trade
(By Douglas Jones, US Presswire)

(PhatzRadio / ) — It took long enough, but it appears our long, national “Dwightmare” is over.

Citing people with direct knowledge of the talks, ESPN and other news organizations reported Thursday night that a four-team blockbuster that will send Dwight Howard to the is complete, pending approval.

“He’s ecstatic … just incredibly happy to be moving on to the Lakers, moving out of Orlando,” ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith said of a conversation with Howard. “He’s just anxious to put the events of the past behind him. … His attitude is this is second home to him already (because Howard has spent time in Los Angeles rehabilitating his back).

“One of the things he told me, ‘I can assure you I’m happy to be here.’ ”

The trade is set to go down like this, ESPN reports: The Lakers will receive Howard from the ; the will receive Lakers center Andrew Bynum and Magic guard ; the will receive 76ers guard ; and the Magic will get Nuggets guard and forward , 76ers center Nikola Vucevic and forward Maurice Harkless and one protected future first-round pick from each of the other three teams.

The Lakers have a long history of acquiring elite big men:

They received Wilt Chamberlain in 1968 from the 76ers for three players who were not better than Chamberlain.
They got Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (and Walt Wesley) in 1975 from the for four players who were not better than Abdul-Jabbar.
They signed Shaquille O’Neal away from the Magic as a free agent in 1996.
They traded for in 2008, sending the Memphis Grizzlies three players and two draft picks, none of whom ended up better than Gasol. (Though Marc Gasol, one of the pieces of the trade, is an excellent NBA center in his own right.)

Now Howard joins the list and joins in the post for the Lakers.

“Lakers did it again, getting a center. … It’s a great deal for the Lakers, obviously,” Hall of Famer Chris Mullin said on ESPN. “This catapulted the Lakers next to, if not above, the Oklahoma City Thunder.”

The trade still needs to be approved by the league. ESPN Los Angeles reports that a trade call with the league office has been scheduled for Friday.

If approved, this would drastically change the Lakers’ starting five from last season to Kobe Bryant, Steve Nash (acquired from the Phoenix Suns last month), Metta , Pau Gasol and Howard.

Howard skipped his annual camp this week in Orlando while rehabbing in Los Angeles. Campers were given refunds.

(PhatzRadio / ) — The , and have discussed a three-team deal that would send disgruntled superstar to Los Angeles, according to people close to the situation. The three teams have discussed a number of . While no is imminent, the talks are ongoing.

One scenario would send Howard to Los Angeles, to Cleveland and a package of picks and to Orlando, according to the people.

The would land Howard, who they have been aggressively pursuing for .

The Cavaliers would acquire a to put alongside Kyrie Irving, one they should be able to keep long term as Cleveland has been mentioned as a team Bynum will consider signing an extension with.

The Magic would acquire a number of prospects and draft picks as well as a significant amount of cap relief, which is exactly what they want in exchange for Howard. Rather than bringing in veterans who will keep the team competitive, Orlando wants to stockpile young talent and completely rebuild.

The remain interested in Howard, and they’ve also been in contact with Magic brass in recent days. The Rockets’ money is currently tied up in restricted Jeremy Lin and Omer , whom they’ve signed to offer sheets.

At this point, there’s no clear for Howard, but the Lakers and Rockets are certainly leading the charge for the six-time All-Star.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Lakers have exercised their $16.1 million contract option for next season on All- Andrew Bynum.

Los Angeles announced the move Monday. General manager confirmed last month the Lakers would exercise the option.

Bynum is coming off his best season after averaging career highs with 18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds while making his first All-, starting for the West. He was the NBA’s third- and 20th-leading while also ranking sixth in the league with 1.93 blocked shots per game.

Bynum also avoided the injuries that have dogged him throughout a seven-year career since the Lakers made the New Jersey the youngest player ever drafted in 2005. Bynum played in 60 of the Lakers’ 66 regular-season games, missing four due to suspension.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — was consumed by determination, holding off Kenneth Faried with one arm and relentlessly tipping the ball at the hoop with the other in the fourth quarter of Game 7. One, two, three, four – five! – offensive rebounds later, the ball finally surrendered and dropped through the hoop.

A few minutes later, the truth was as undeniable as that 7-foot . Although the Nuggets drove them to the brink of playoff , the Los Angeles Lakers still have the to win on the biggest nights of the postseason.

Even when doesn’t lead them.

Gasol had 23 points, 17 rebounds, six assists and four blocked shots, Metta World Peace scored 15 points in his return from a seven-game suspension, and the Lakers outlasted Denver for a thrilling 96-87 victory Saturday night to win their first-round series.

scored a playoff career-high 19 points and Bryant had a quiet 17 points and eight assists against regular double-teams for the Lakers, who blew a 16-point lead in the second half before surviving a finale with wild momentum swings and furious physical play.

With Gasol leading the Lakers’ emotional effort – exemplified by those five offensive rebounds on a single, unbelievable tip play with 7:10 left – the Lakers narrowly avoided becoming the in NBA history to blow a 3-1 series lead.

“We were aggressive,” Gasol said. “We attacked the paint better. We pounded the boards as hard as we could, every single time. … Our also had something to do with it.”

Andrew Bynum had 16 points, a career playoff-high 18 rebounds and six blocked shots for Los Angeles, which must open the second round Monday night in Oklahoma City against the second-seeded Thunder.

Ty Lawson and Al Harrington scored 24 points apiece for the sixth-seeded Nuggets, who committed 19 turnovers and managed just 7-of-27 shooting in the fourth quarter. Arron Afflalo scored 15 points in just the third Game 7 in franchise history for the Nuggets, who have lost in the first round in eight of the last nine postseasons – but never with this much excitement.

“Tomorrow or the next day, when the funk gets out of your body, you’re going to be proud of them,” Denver coach George Karl said. “I’ve never been in a locker room at the end of a season where every guy in front of me, I’m happy with and I’m content with. … The game was so physical. I think their size won over our speed. We gave a great effort. We made them miss enough shots to win, but we just didn’t rebound the ball.”

The Lakers appeared to be in control of the series after a narrow victory in Game 4 last weekend, but the Nuggets rallied for two straight dominant victories. Game 7 was a barn-burner, with both teams blowing significant leads in the final minutes as this stark clash of styles between the physical Lakers and the speedy Nuggets was resolved in the very last minutes.

“It’s tough,” Lawson said. “We played together, and played as a team. Just the way it went down is kind of tough for us. We fought hard and showed a lot of energy. Next year, we’re going to be even better.”

World Peace hit four 3-pointers and energized Los Angeles with tough defense in his return. The former Ron Artest missed Los Angeles’ regular-season finale and the first six games against Denver for viciously elbowing Oklahoma City’s James Harden, the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year and one of his probable defensive assignments in the next round.

World Peace doesn’t plan to seek out Harden to make peace before the opener, saying he rarely talks to even his friends on opposing teams before games.

“I don’t shake substitutions’ hands,” World Peace said.

Although he also launched 11 3-pointers, hitting four, World Peace used that attitude to help shut down Danilo Gallinari and Andre Miller, holding them to a combined 2-for-19 shooting.

“He made plays tonight that won’t show up in the stat sheet that were absolutely amazing for us defensively,” said Mike Brown, who shrugged off Magic Johnson’s pregame pronouncement that the first-year coach’s job would be in jeopardy with a loss. “Just his presence alone helped us out, and that’s what we missed the first six games. … He was monstrous for us tonight.”

With Gasol and World Peace taking the lead, Bryant didn’t dominate with scoring, but his playmaking out of double-teams helped Blake hit five 3-pointers in a row before missing his sixth attempt. The journeyman guard is backing up Ramon Sessions, who managed just four points in the finale of his first career playoff series.

One possession after his five-rebound masterpiece, Gasol put the Lakers ahead for good with a tiebreaking tip-in with 6:30 to play, kicking off an 11-2 Lakers run. Afflalo’s 3-pointer cut the lead to 89-84 with 1:09 to play, but Bryant hit a dramatic 3-pointer before Gasol hit two free throws with 31 seconds left, punctuating them with a sweeping punch of his fist.

The Lakers improved to 15-1 in a Game 7 at home, winning 11 straight since the 1969 NBA finals. They’ve won three straight Game 7s since losing a first-rounder at Phoenix in 2006, also the last time an NBA team blew a 3-1 series lead.

The Lakers narrowly avoided becoming the ninth team to waste a 3-1 lead after losing two closeout games in the previous four days. Los Angeles had been 12-1 in closeout games since acquiring Gasol in 2008 before stumbling twice against the Nuggets, who led for almost every possession of the past two contests.

Gasol’s focus was obvious from the opening tip. The four-time All-Star had just three points and three rebounds in Game 6, but he played the finale with emotion and aggression, hustling for loose balls and rebounds while demonstratively celebrating baskets and playing to the crowd.

The Nuggets fell behind 62-46 midway through the third quarter, but erased the entire Lakers lead in a furious 6 1/2-minute stretch led by Lawson, who scored 13 points in the period. Denver took a lead on the first shot of the fourth, but the Lakers never trailed after Blake’s 3-pointer with 9:03 left.

NOTES: Bryant is 5-1 in Game 7s in his career. … The Lakers played at home on a Saturday night for the first time all season. Their other two Saturday home dates were matinees. … Fans near courtside included Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, Barry Diller and Diane Von Furstenberg, Julie Bowen, Zac Efron and rapper The Game.

BOSTON (AP) — Rajon Rondo has made dozens of last-second dashes to the basket.

This time, he went in the opposite direction.

The Celtics point guard ran into the backcourt, grabbing the inbounds pass in stride, avoiding a foul and dribbling out the final 3.4 seconds to clinch Boston’s 92-91 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday night in the opener of their Eastern Conference semifinal series.

“I feel like I could out-quick him. That’s what I did,” Rondo said. “We knew they had a foul to give. I told Doc (Rivers) to get me the ball and I could use my speed.”

Rondo had 17 assists, 13 points and 12 rebounds for his eighth career playoff triple-double. He had six points, five assists and four rebounds in the fourth quarter, when the Celtics went on a 23-7 run to turn a double-digit deficit into a six-point lead with 78 seconds to play.

“He’s an amazing player. He really is,” Sixers coach Doug Collins said. “He takes that ball wherever he wants to take it on the floor.”

Kevin Garnett scored 29 points – his most in the regular- or postseason this year – and added 11 rebounds to help Boston maintain home-court advantage in the best-of-seven, second-round series. Game 2 is Monday night in Boston before the series shifts to Philadelphia for Games 3 and 4.

“If you’ve watched us all season, we’re not going to drop our heads,” Collins said. “We live to come back and fight just as hard in Game 2, at least as long as I’m the coach.”

scored 19 points and Evan Turner had 16 with 10 rebounds for Philadelphia, which advanced to the second round for the first time since 2003 by beating East No. 1 seed Chicago. But Turner couldn’t catch Rondo in the final seconds when Philadelphia had a foul to give.

“Rondo just leaps out. That’s the last thing on your mind: him going into our side of the court,” Iguodala said. “You could have a turnover down there. It’s a gamble, but it’s a good play. … We could have done a better job scoping it out.”

The Sixers led 77-67 with 11 minutes to play before Boston scored 23 of the next 30 points, with Rondo making a jumper to cut it to 80-79, then another two minutes later to give Boston an 83-82 lead with 3:47 to play.

After Spencer Hawes’ basket from the right baseline put the Sixers up 84-83, Rondo drove to the basket and, with his path blocked, turned and handed the ball to Garnett. He banked one in and drew the foul to give Boston a two-point lead, then added another jumper.

After misses by Turner and Lou Williams, hit a fall-away jumper with 78 seconds left to make it a six-point lead – the Celtics’ biggest of the night.

Boston still led by five when Jrue Holiday made a jumper, then Rondo fouled him with 3.4 seconds left and he made both foul shots. Boston inbounded the ball from between the benches, and Rondo sprinted back into the backcourt and outran Turner to the wrong basket as the time expired.

Pierce, who had a sprained MCL in his left knee, scored 14 points on 3-for-11 shooting. Rondo was only 6 for 15 from the floor, but he was 3 for 6 in the fourth quarter, adding five rebounds and four assists.

Hawes scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half.

Both teams advanced by winning their first-round series in six games: Boston beat Atlanta, and Philadelphia eliminated the Bulls to become the fifth No. 8 seed to eliminate a No. 1. They got only one day off before beginning the second round in Boston, where the Celtics earned their only victory against the Sixers this year.

The Sixers scored the first seven points of the game and led by 10 at the end of the first quarter, when Boston shot 30 percent. It was 45-32 when Boston scored 10 of the last 12 points in the half, with Rondo picking up four assists and a steal in the final 3 minutes before the break.

A little more than two minutes into the third, Avery Bradley outraced Rondo to a long rebound and took it in, splitting defenders Iguodala and Holiday for the reverse layup that made it 48-47 – Boston’s first lead of the game. Philadelphia quickly retook the lead and extended it to eight points.

Notes: Garnett scored eight points on 4-for-6 shooting in the first quarter and was the only Celtics starter to make a basket in the first. … Ray Allen, who was 1 for 7 from the floor in Game 6 of the Atlanta series while struggling with bone spurs in his right ankle, was 3 for 5 in 14 minutes in the first half on Saturday. … Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca ventured over to the media section to say hello to former player Brian Scalabrine, who was working for Comcast SportsNet. … The Celtics were 2-for-18 from 3-point range. … Philadelphia won the two games at home, including a 32-point victory on March 7. None of the three regular-season meetings between the teams was close.

LeBron James scored 27 for the Heat, who will try to close it out in Game 5 at home on Wednesday. Dwyane Wade had 22 points but missed a 3- with 1.6 seconds left that would have given Miami a lengthy rest before starting the second round.

Wade’s errant shot set off a loud celebration from Knicks fans who hadn’t seen their team win in the postseason since beating the in Game 3 of a best-of-five series. It didn’t look as if the victory would come in this series, after the Knicks had been blown out by 20 points per game in the first three games.

But they got a huge spark from Stoudemire, playing with padding over his hand just six days after badly cutting it when he punched a fire extinguisher case after a Game 2 loss in Miami.

DENVER (AP) — Kobe Bryant scored 22 points, added 19 and the Lakers’ stars got plenty of help from their supporting cast while taking a 3-1 lead in their first-round playoff series.

Reserve Jordan Hill was big for L.A., posting a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds, and Steve Blake scored 10 points, including a key 3-pointer in the final minute as the Lakers overcame a six-point halftime deficit.

Ramon Sessions scored 12 points and also had a big 3 in the final minute for the Lakers.

The game was briefly delayed with 1:10 left in the first half when a female fan started walking across the court while the Nuggets were setting up a play.

Memphis pulled it off last season against San Antonio, and Golden State (2007), New York (1999) and Denver (1994) also accomplished the rare feat

Carlos Boozer had 23 points and 11 rebounds, and Taj Gibson added 14 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulls, who played without Derrick Rose (torn ACL) and Joakim Noah (sprained ankle). Rose is out for the season and Noah is day to day for the rest of the series.

The Spurs have won 11 in a row.
