DETROIT (AP) — Pinch-hitter Mark Reynolds hit a tiebreaking single in the , and the Cleveland Indians downed Detroit.

Cleveland tied it in the ninth when Michael Brantley hit a two-out RBI single off closer Jose Valverde. Joe Smith (1-0) pitched the bottom of the inning, and the Indians took the lead in the 10th.

David Ortiz homered for the second straight night at Fenway Park. The Red Sox are having one of the best Aprils in club history. Boston (16-7) is two wins short of tying the club record for the month with three games remaining.

Erik Bedard (0-2) allowed five runs on eight hits over three innings for Houston. The Astros lost for the fifth time in seven games and fell to 0-5 at Fenway.

Boston finished with 17 hits and nine were for extra bases, including back-to-back homers by Will Middlebrooks and Ross to open the fourth.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Wei-Yin Chen pitched eight strong innings, giving up only two hits to help the Orioles beat the Athletics.

SEATTLE (AP) — Hank Conger and each hit two-run homers and C.J. Wilson worked out of a pair of bases-loaded jams to help give the Angels a victory over the Mariners.

Wilson (2-0) went 5 1-3 innings, allowing seven hits and three runs. He walked two and struck out a season-high nine.

Ernesto Frieri pitched the ninth for his third save in three chances.

The Angels would not let Mariners’ starter Aaron Harang (0-3) settle in. They scored in each of the first three innings for a 5-0 lead, chasing Harang before the fourth.

DETROIT (AP) — Anibal Sanchez struck out 17 in eight marvelous innings for Detroit, confounding the Braves in a dazzling performance.

Sanchez set a team record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game, and he had a mathematical chance of tying the major league mark of 20 when he was pulled after eight innings and 121 pitches. Sanchez (3-1) took off his hat as he was leaving the field following the top of the eighth, acknowledging a huge ovation at Comerica Park after he struck out Dan Uggla, his final hitter.

BALTIMORE (AP) — Manny Machado had two hits and two RBIs, and Baltimore used a four-run second inning to beat R.A. Dickey and Toronto.

Miguel Gonzalez (2-1) allowed three runs in six innings for the Orioles, who have won nine of 13. By taking the first two games of the three-game set, Baltimore improved to 5-2 in seven series.

It was the 100th consecutive game the Orioles have won when leading after seven innings, a streak that began in August 2011. Baltimore is 4-3 in one-run games after starting 0-3.

Edwin Encarnacion hit a three-run homer for the last-place Blue Jays, who have dropped six of eight. Dickey (2-3) gave up four runs, six hits and five walks in six innings.

BOSTON (AP) — Bartolo Colon allowed three hits and Oakland capitalized on eight walks, two balks and two errors to beat Boston in a rain-shortened game.

The A’s broke a scoreless tie with six runs in the third when Seth Smith hit a two-run homer, then added two in the fourth, four in the fifth and one in the sixth to snap a four-game skid.

Colon (3-0) pitched all seven innings and had little trouble in the light-to-medium rain that fell throughout the game. He struck out seven and issued his first walk this season in 25 innings to Jacoby Ellsbury leading off the sixth.

Alfredo Aceves (1-1) wallowed seven earned runs in 3 1-3 innings for Boston.

Brantly had two doubles and Ricky Nolasco (1-2) allowed two earned runs on six hits in five innings for the Marlins, who won for just the fifth time this season. Miami had a season-high 16 hits, including a double, a single and two RBIs from struggling slugger Giancarlo Stanton. Steve Cishek got his second save.

HOUSTON (AP) — Marwin Gonzalez homered, Bud Norris rebounded from a tough start last time out and Houston snapped a three-game skid with a victory over Seattle.

The game was tied at 1 when Gonzalez launched his homer about 10 rows into the stands in right field to start Houston’s third. Gonzalez, who bats ninth, hit just four home runs in 80 games last season and has three in 16 this year.

Houston got an insurance run when Hisashi Iwakuma (2-1) hit Justin Maxwell with a pitch with the bases loaded later in that inning.

Norris (3-2) allowed a season-high eight hits in five innings.

MARLINS 8, NATIONALS 2

MIAMI (AP) — Adeiny Hechavarria ended Miami’s nine-game home run drought with a three-run shot against Washington.

A throwing error by Nationals — his fourth in five games — preceded the homer and led to four unearned runs.

The Marlins (3-11) began the game with the worst record in the majors but broke out of an offensive slump in the fourth inning with four runs, more than they had scored in all but one game.

Hechavarria sent the Marlins Park home run sculpture swinging into action for the first time this season and ended a homer drought that had tied the 20-year-old franchise record.

Justin Ruggiano had two hits and three RBIs, and Juan Pierre finished with three hits. Alex Sanabia (2-1) allowed two runs in six innings, and two relievers completed an eight-hitter.

Dan Haren (1-2) gave up seven runs, three earned, in 4 1-3 innings and lowered his ERA to 8.10.

The Nationals played without three regulars. Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton sat out for the fifth consecutive game because of a bruised left shoulder.

ROCKIES 8, METS 4, 1ST GAME

DENVER (AP) — Jordan Pacheco singled home the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning and Colorado rallied from a six-run deficit to sweep a frigid doubleheader from New York.

In the opener, Carlos Gonzalez homered and Todd Helton hit a go-ahead single as the Rockies won a game that was delayed 2 hours as 8 inches of snow was removed from the field.

Early in the day, Rockies owner Dick Monfort took the field with a shovel and helped clear the way for the game to be played. A crew of team employees lent a hand as well, as did Sandy Alderson, the general manager of the Mets.

Colorado came back in the nightcap to tie it 8-all with two runs in the eighth inning, courtesy of errors by Mets reliever Brandon Lyon and shortstop Ruben Tejada.

Rafael Betancourt (1-0) pitched a scoreless 10th to earn the win. Greg Burke (0-1) took the loss on a long day of chilly . The temperature at first pitch for the second game was 36 degrees.

David Wright homered twice in the opener for the Mets, finally back on the field after cold weather postponed two straight games. Wintry conditions in Minneapolis on Sunday prompted their game against the Twins to be rescheduled for August.

Juan Nicasio (2-0) allowed four runs in five innings. Dillon Gee (0-3) had another rough outing, going 4 2-3 innings and giving up five earned runs.

PHILLIES 0, REDS 0, 9TH INNING, SUSPENDED

CINCINNATI (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies and Cincinnati Reds managed only two singles apiece, staying scoreless until their game was suspended because of heavy rain in the middle of the ninth inning.

The game will be picked up at the same point on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., before the teams play the finale of their series no earlier than 7:10 p.m.

Phillies reliever Phillippe Aumont was warming up to start the bottom of the ninth when heavy rain prompted the umpires to call for the tarp. They decided to suspend the game after 43 minutes with more rain headed for the area.

Aroldis Chapman pitched the top of the ninth and retired the three Phillies he faced.

A storm moved through after both teams finished batting practice and delayed the start by 1 hour, 20 minutes. Rain returned intermittently and became steady in the fifth inning, then heavy in the ninth.

Philadelphia starter Kyle Kendrick and Cincinnati’s Homer Bailey were stingy, allowing a pair of singles apiece before leaving.

BREWERS 10, GIANTS 8

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Yuniesky Betancourt hit a grand slam, and Carlos Gomez and Norichika Aoki also homered as Milwaukee used an eight-run third inning to beat Barry Zito and San Francisco.

Betancourt’s fifth career slam highlighted the seven-hit inning that chased Zito, who hadn’t lost since Aug. 2 against the New York Mets. Rickie Weeks doubled home two runs and Jonathan Lucroy added a two-run single as the Brewers sent 12 batters to the plate. Zito faced 11 of them.

Zito (2-1) had opened the season with consecutive scoreless seven-inning outings. He lasted only 2 2-3 innings this time and his spotless ERA ballooned to 4.86. Dating to last season, the Giants had won the previous 13 regular-season games started by Zito.

Gomez’s home run off the in left snapped Zito’s scoreless streak to start the season at 15 2-3 innings. Zito is 0-5 in eight starts at Miller Park and has never lasted more than 5 2-3 innings.

Brandon Kintzler (2-0) got the win in relief. Jim Henderson pitched the ninth for his second save.

Ryan Braun struck out four times.

PADRES 9, DODGERS 2

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jason Marquis pitched three-hit ball over 7 2-3 innings for his first win of the season and Alexi Amarista tied a career high with four RBIs, leading San Diego over Los Angeles.

Marquis (1-1) allowed his only run on Mark Ellis’ bases-loaded and struck out five.

Nick Hundley and Yonder Alonso each had two RBIs, helping the Padres win their second straight over Los Angeles after a 2-10 start and handing the Dodgers their third straight loss.

Chris Capuano (0-1) came out of the bullpen to make his first start of the season in place of $147 million right-hander Zack Greinke, whose collarbone was broken during a bench-clearing brawl with the Padres in San Diego last Thursday, after he hit Carlos Quentin with a pitch. Quentin, who charged the mound, served the second game of his eight-game suspension.

NEW YORK (AP) — Miguel Cabrera is one of five finalists for the AL MVP award in voting by the .

The Detroit third baseman is joined by Texas’ and Josh Hamilton, the New York Yankees’ , and Los Angeles Angels rookie , who also is one of three nominees for AL Rookie of the Year.

For the first time Wednesday, the BBWAA announced finalists for its awards. The winners will be revealed next week live on the MLB Network, beginning Monday with the two rookies of the year and concluding Thursday with the MVPs.

Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun has a chance for a repeat as NL MVP. He’s pitted against San Diego’s Chase Headley, Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen, St. Louis’ and San Francisco’s .

Mets knuckleballer R.A. Dickey is among the three finalists for the NL . Washington’s and 2011 winner of the Dodgers are also competing.

Detroit’s reigning AL MVP and winner Justin Verlander has another shot for top pitcher in the AL. Tampa Bay’s David Price and the Angels’ are the other two finalists. The winner in each league will be picked Wednesday.

Trout is competing with two foreign-born stars Cuban outfielder Yoenis Cespedes of the Athletics and Japanese pitcher Yu Darvish of the Rangers for Rookie of the Year in the AL.

Washington’s Bryce Harper, Cincinnati’s Todd Frazier and Arizona’s are the nominees in the NL.

Of the six finalists for Manager of the Year, only White Sox rookie skipper Robin Ventura is not a previous winner. He was nominated along with Bob Melvin (2007) and Buck Showalter (1994, 2004) in the AL.

In the NL, the Reds’ Dusty Baker (1993, 1997, 2000), World Series champion Giants Bruce Bochy (1996) and Washington’s Davey Johnson (1997) got the nod.

The two top managers will be announced Tuesday.
