Greensboro, North Carolina () — Two-time Democratic presidential hopeful walked out of court a free man on Thursday after a jury cleared him of one federal corruption count and deadlocked on five others.

Prosecutors had accused the onetime North Carolina senator of using nearly $1 million in to keep his pregnant mistress under wraps as he ran for president a second time in 2008.

Emerging from the courthouse with his parents and daughter at his side, he said that while he never believed he committed a crime, “I did an awful, awful lot that was wrong, and there is no one else responsible for my sins.”

“None of the people who came to court and testified are responsible. Nobody working for the government is responsible,” he said. “I am responsible, and if I want to find the person who should be held accountable for my sins, honestly, I don’t have to go any further than the mirror.”

He thanked his family for supporting him, adding that “I’m grateful for all my children” — including the girl born of his affair, whom he called “my precious Quinn, who I love more than any of you can ever imagine.”

After more than 50 hours of over nine days, jurors cleared him on one count, which involved allegations that Edwards had accepted illegal campaign contributions in 2008. U.S. Catherine Eagles declared a on the remainder.

Jurors emerged to announce they had reached a decision on the one count, but none of the others. Eagles ordered them back into the jury room to continue deliberating, but they returned less than an hour later to announce the deadlock.

Edwards had been charged with four counts of accepting illegal campaign contributions, one count of falsifying documents and one of conspiring to receive and conceal the contributions. The charges could have carried a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and a $1.5 million fine.

There was no immediate comment from the Justice Department, which prosecuted the case.

“This was win for John Edwards, and there will be a lot of questions about why this case was brought,” CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin said after the announcement.

Edwards ran for president in 2004, when he ended up as the Democrats’ nominee for vice president, and again in 2008. His attorneys argued he was guilty of being a bad husband to his wife, Elizabeth, who died in 2010, but had committed no crime.

They also argued that former Edwards aide Andrew Young, the government’s star witness, used the contributions for his own gain and to pay for Hunter’s medical expenses to hide the affair from Edwards’ wife.

Neither Edwards, former mistress Rielle Hunter nor either of the two donors whose funds were in question testified during the trial. Fred Baron died in 2008, while Rachel “Bunny” Mellon — who gave Edwards the bulk of the money — is now 101.

More details about the charges

Jurors last week asked to review all the exhibits, indicating they were in it for the long haul.

Prosecutors said Edwards “knowingly and willingly” took the money from Baron and Mellon to keep Hunter out of the public eye, then concealed the donations by filing false and misleading campaign disclosure reports.

The affair occurred as Edwards was gearing up for a second White House bid in 2008, and he knew his political ambitions depended on keeping his affair with Hunter a secret, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Higdon told jurors in closing arguments.

“There is no question it would destroy the campaign of John Edwards,” Higdon said.

Everything you need to know about John Edwards

Prosecutors argued that Edwards knowingly violated campaign finance laws by accepting the large contributions from Mellon and Baron that went to support Hunter. Edwards “knew these rules well,” Higdon said, and should have known that the contributions violated campaign finance laws.

Edwards accepted $725,000 from Mellon and more than $200,000 from Baron, prosecutors said. The money was used to pay for Hunter’s living and medical expenses, travel and other costs to keep her out of sight while Edwards made his White House run, prosecutors say.

Defense attorneys argued the donations could not be considered campaign contributions.

Prosecutors said Edwards manipulated Young and others to help keep his affair out of public view. Young testified that he allowed Hunter to move in with him and his wife at Edwards’ request after newspapers began looking into a possible affair within the Edwards campaign.

Young initially claimed to be the father of Hunter’s baby girl and testified that Mellon was already funding Hunter’s living expenses when he called Baron to complain about the situation. Baron offered to help out, telling Young to write up Hunter’s expenses so Baron could reimburse them, the aide testified.

Neither Baron nor Mellon appeared to know that the other was reimbursing Young for the same expenses, raising questions about whether and how much Young may have profited from the situation. Young acknowledged during the trial that he had used some donations for his own personal benefit, including paying for the construction of a home.

Why politicians lie and why we want to believe them

Another former Edwards aide, speechwriter Wendy Button, testified that Edwards knew Baron was supporting Hunter and her child in 2009. Defense lawyer Abbe Lowell urged jurors to focus on Young’s role in the case, saying he was a biased and unreliable witness with a financial and legal interest in the outcome.

“There is nothing he won’t lie about, nothing,” Lowell said.

Young, the author of a tell-all book about the Edwards , testified under an agreement with the government in hopes that he will not be prosecuted. Prosecutors agreed that Young made several mistakes over the years, including keeping some of the money, failing to confront Edwards earlier about his behavior and falsely claiming paternity for Edwards’ child with Hunter.

But David Harbach of the U.S. Justice Department’s public integrity section told jurors in a rebuttal argument that Lowell was merely trying to distract jurors from focusing on the charges against Edwards.

“The defense is overplaying their hand,” Harbach said.

Davis to Big Easy? Hornets win lottery for NBA’s No. 1 draft pick

2a98737b0539fc7d5c13bdf376cd0450 Davis to Big Easy? Hornets win lottery for NBA’s No. 1 draft pick

NEW YORK (AP) — New owner, and now a player. The future suddenly looks bright for the .

Meanwhile, it was yet another loss – in a historic season full of them – for Michael Jordan and the .

The Hornets, recently sold by the NBA to Saints , won the NBA’s Wednesday and the No. 1 pick overall – which they almost certainly will use to pick Kentucky star Anthony Davis.

At least that’s what the consensus college player of the year is expecting. Moments after the Hornets won the lottery, Davis said he was looking forward to playing professionally in the place where he led the to a in April.

The good news for the Hornets comes after a in which they traded All-Star Chris Paul and a couple of years in limbo where they couldn’t do much to upgrade the roster while the league was looking for a buyer.

“Just a first step for us to winning it all,” Benson said in a TV interview after the lottery.

The Hornets moved up from the fourth spot, where they had a 13.7 percent chance, to earn the pick.

“Everything was surreal once they announced the fourth pick,” said Hornets coach Monty Williams, who represented the team on stage. “I said `This is pretty cool.’ I knew were home praying that things would go well and they did.”

The Bobcats, after going 7-59 for the worst winning percentage in , fell to the No. 2 pick. Washington will pick third and Cleveland fell one spot to fourth.

Charlotte had a 25 percent chance of grabbing the No. 1 pick, but instead will have to take the after Davis, possibly his teammate, Michael Kidd-.

The team with the worst record hasn’t won since Orlando drafted in 2004.

“We will still take the best player available and when you win you have a lot of holes,” Bobcats general manager Rich Cho said. “From a competitive standpoint and for anyone who has played sports or been competitive, you want to win and be No. 1. We know we’re still going to get a good player.”

Cho and team vice chairman Curtis Polk said they hadn’t heard from Jordan, the Bobcats owner.

“Being No. 2 isn’t terrible. We’ll be fine,” Polk said.

The league bought the Hornets from owner George Shinn in December 2010 and the sale to Benson was completed in April. The NBA was criticized for the conflict of interest of a league owning a franchise, particularly when Commissioner David Stern blocked a trade that would have sent Paul to the Lakers in December, then approved another that landed Paul with the Clippers.

The ownership uncertainty hindered the Hornets, but they were in a celebrating mood Wednesday after earning the No. 1 pick for the first time since 1991, when they were still in Charlotte and took Larry Johnson.

General manager Dell Demps said he pumped his fist in the room where the drawing took place after seeing that the balls had been drawn in the Hornets’ favor.

“When our combination came up, it was an exciting feeling,” he said. “I got an incredible rush. … We knew what the odds were. We hoped for the best. It was nothing we could control. We’re just happy.”

The Hornets, who went 21-45, also have the No. 10 pick. They played hard at the end of the season even as it reduced their lottery odds, winning eight of their final 13 games with a young roster.

“Obviously, we’re very excited,” Demps said. “This is a great day for the city of New Orleans, our fans. … This is the start of a new beginning.”

Though they didn’t officially say it, it’s expected to start with Davis, one of the most dominant defensive college players in years who was Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four even as he went 1 for 10 from the field in the championship game. He blocked a record-tying six shots and had 16 rebounds and three steals in the Wildcats’ 67-59 victory over Kansas.

“Davis is not LeBron. He’s not Tim (Duncan). But they were young once and Tim had four years of college,” Williams said.

The Nets were the other big loser when they stayed in the No. 6 spot. They owed their pick to Portland for this season’s Gerald Wallace trade unless they moved into the top three.

The Cavs beat the odds last year and moved up to take Kyrie Irving, the eventual Rookie of the Year, and tried to follow the same formula. Nick Gilbert, the 15-year-old son of owner Dan Gilbert, was back on the podium in his bow tie, and the Cavs’ traveling party that included Dan Gilbert, and former Browns quarterback Bernie Kosar and current Browns players Josh Cribbs and Joe Haden sported the same dress.

But there was no repeat, as the Cavs went backward this time.

“Still feel very good about (number)4 pick,” Dan Gilbert wrote on his Twitter page. “We are getting a great player there and good additions w/our other 3 picks. I believe.”

Sacramento rounds out the top five of the draft, to be held June 28 in Newark, N.J.

The Golden State Warriors stayed at No. 7, meaning they get to keep their pick instead of having to trade it to Utah. The Trail Blazers will also have two lottery selections, the Nets’ and their own at No. 11.

Are the Texas Rangers the Best Team Since the ’98 Yankees?

help Are the Texas Rangers the Best Team Since the ’98 Yankees?
hamilton 0 Are the Texas Rangers the Best Team Since the ’98 Yankees?

The Rangers are the best team since the ’98 Yankees. Do you agree?

Tom Verducci made this statement yesterday to John Feinstein and Bruce Murray during their mid-day show on Mad Dog Radio. I think Nolan Ryan and Jon Daniels have done a fabulous job turning around that ballclub, but they should not be discussed in the same breath as one of the best baseball teams of all-time.

The ’98 Yankees weren’t a collection of All-Stars. Although the Yankees have been a payroll team for the better part of the decade, this was not the case during the late nineties dynasty under Joe Torre. The Yanks were actually number two, behind Baltimore, with their $66 million dollar payroll. There were six other teams that were within $10 million dollars of them, as well.

That ’98 team was a collection of homegrown talent, veteran acquisition and component players that thrived in their roles. That group scored 965 runs, which is the tenth highest in franchise history. Offensively, it was on par with the powerful offenses of the late twenties and thirties. Even more impressive was their pitching. They only allowed 656 runs; on par with the top staffs in the National League despite having to deal with the Designated Hitter. This current Rangers group is on par with that production, but in the depressed post-steriods era. The Yankees output was amazing due to the explosion of offense we saw that season.

Jeter, Pettitte, Rivera, Posada and Williams made up a strong homegrown core. Cone, El Duque, David Wells, Chuck Knoblauch, Paul O’Neill and Tino Martinez were key veteran acquisitions. Former stars such as Tim Raines and Darryl Strawberry accepted part-time roles. Scott Brosius, Chad Curtis and Joe Girardi were key component players. The bridge to Rivera was made up of relievers – like Mike Stanton and Jeff Nelson- who could be closing for most teams. It was a great mix that fit perfectly together. That team dominated with 114 wins and won three straight titles.

The Rangers have won back-to-back American League pennants. They are an impressive bunch that can beat a team in a variety of ways. They can out slug, win a 2-1 game or beat you in the bullpen. Their 31-20 record is the best in baseball, but they don’t stack up to that historic Yankees team, yet.

The two biggest differences I see is the type of offense they have and the starting pitching. The Rangers are led by Josh Hamilton, who currently has 21 homers and 57 RBI in just 46 games. They have good surrounding lineup with Ian Kinsler, Mike Napoli and Adrian Beltre. They are, however, receiving sub-par production from two veterans – Michael Young and Nelson Cruz- which makes their offense predicated on Hamilton. Take their star out of that lineup and see the difference.

The ’98 Yankees weren’t a team that relied on one slugger. The only below league average hitter in their lineup was Chad Curtis (OPS+ of 90). They could beat you with home runs, move runners along and even had speed. The Rangers are a powerful team that can bludgeon you to death. I do believe, however, they will struggle to score if the home runs don’t come in droves. Texas also doesn’t have the type of bench of that Yankees team. There are no Raines’ or Strawberry’s to substitute; clear advantage to New York.

The starting pitching of the Rangers is promising, but still not consistent. Neftali Feliz and Yu Darvish still put way too many runners on base despite their hefty strikeout rate. The two young lefties – Matt Harrison and Derek Holland- are still very inconsistent. Texas most reliable starter is Colby Lewis, who was one of their better starters in last year’s World Series. Give me Cone, Wells, Pettitte and El Duque in a seven game series. It really isn’t a contest. Defensively they appear to be pretty even which neutralizes the pitching results.

Their bullpens are both deep. The Yanks had Stanton, Nelson and Graeme Lloyd and the secret weapon, Ramiro Mendoza, as a bridge to Mariano. The Rangers have Alexi Ogando (who can also start), Mike Adams, Mark Lowe and Koji Uehara. It’s a bullpen of top notch setup men. You could argue that Joe Nathan is Rivera-lite over the course of his career. His performance this year (11 saves, 2.08 ERA) post Tommy John

The biggest difference between this Rangers group and the late nineties Yankees, or early nineties Blue Jays for that matter, is they haven’t sealed the deal. They lost to inferior National League clubs in the World Series. When it counted the Giants’ and Cardinals’ staffs were able to shutdown this powerful offense. Those Yankees teams always found a way to win against an Atlanta team that, arguably, was better on paper. The Rangers are still very much about potential and not results.

There has to be a World Series title for me to even discuss this Texas team with the ’98 Yankees. Even if there is I don’t know if that still would justify putting them in the same category of that dynasty.

LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — Brazil had its way with the U.S. , with the stars in the famous yellow jerseys dribbling past the Americans and generally pushing them around for the first half-hour.

Neymar had another dazzling night against the Americans, scoring one goal and setting up two more to leads the five-time to a 4-1 victory in an exhibition Wednesday night.

“We need to get an edge more nastier,” said U.S. coach Klinsmann, the former and coach. “Maybe we’re a little bit still too naive. Maybe we don’t want to hurt people. But that’s what we’ve got to do. You’ve got to do that at the end of the day. So we’ve got to step on their toes more and get them more frustrated and make a case with the maybe as well, for us, not only the opponent.”

Thiago Silva, Marcelo and also scored for Brazil, playing the opener of a three-game U.S. tour.

, in his first start since the 2010 World Cup, scored for the U.S., which is preparing for its opening qualifier for the 2014 World Cup on June 8.

“Four-one was maybe not a that was indicative of the overall game. I think for long stretches of that game we kind of imposed our will on them,” Gomez said. “I think the main difference was they were clinical in front of goal and we weren’t.”

Neymar, the 20-year-old Santos sensation, put Brazil ahead in the 12th minute after a hand ball on Oguchi Onyewu that the Americans disputed with Jeffrey Calderon of Puerto Rico. Neymar then took a that Thiago Silva headed in for his first in the 26th.

Gomez cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 45th following a fine run by Michael Bradley and cross by Fabian Johnson. But before an enthusiastic crowd of 67,619 at FedEx Field, Marcelo restored the two-goal lead in the 52nd as Onyewu and American captain Carlos Bocanegra left him unmarked in front of the net. Pato entered in the 64th and added a goal in the 87th that the U.S. claimed was offside.

“We’re the only team in the world that gets homered at home. It’s unbelievable sometimes,” Bocanegra said.

Klinsmann, a German who lives in California with his American-born wife, said the U.S. team has to be more assertive with officials.

“You watch big teams in the world, what they do, and there’s a call going against them – Barcelona is one of them — they come with 10 guys towards the referee,” he said. “The referee is confused. He doesn’t know even know who to show a yellow card.”

Landon Donovan said “that’s not really in our character as Americans.”

“We try to play the game fair,” Donovan said. “We don’t really dive. We don’t do those kind of things.”

Following a 1-4-1 start under Klinsmann, the Americans had won five in a row, including an impressive 1-0 victory at Italy and a 5-1 win last weekend over a Scotland team that already appeared to be on summer vacation.

Against sixth-ranked Brazil, the No. 29 Americans played more offensively than in the 2-0 loss at the Meadowlands two years ago, when they were outshot 20-7. This time the U.S. had a 15-12 advantage in shots.

Klinsmann continued to tinker with his front line because Jozy Altidore didn’t arrive until Monday, and Clint Dempsey is recovering from a groin strain. Dempsey entered in the 57th minute, marking the first time he played with Donovan since Klinsmann replaced Bob Bradley as coach last July.

Brazil, which receives an automatic berth as the 2014 World Cup host, improved to 16-1 against the U.S. with a 35-11 goal difference. The Selecao used a young roster as they prepare for the Olympics, which is limited to players under 23 plus three older players.

Neymar scored against the U.S. in his national team debut two years ago. He took the penalty kick after the hand ball call on Leandro Damiao’s shot went off Onyewu, the tall defender who was benched after two games at the 2010 World Cup, but regained his form this season with Sporting Lisbon. American goalkeeper Tim Howard dived to his right but Neymar sent the ball the other way for his ninth .

Thiago Silva doubled the lead when he got away from Onyewu on Neymar’s , then surged between U.S. captain Carlos Bocanegra and Jermaine Jones for an open header.

Gomez, making his first start since the Algeria match in the 2010 World Cup, scored after Bradley made a spurt toward the top of the box. He slotted to a streaking Johnson, who got behind the defense and sent a cross that bounced off the leg of a sliding defender. The ball bounced up to Gomez, who got behind goalkeeper Rafael Cabral and nodded it in from close range for his third international goal.

Marcelo made it 3-1 in the 52nd with just his fourth international goal. Hulk brought the ball down the left side and passed to Neymar. Onyewu and Bocanegra dropped back too far and Neymar pulled the ball back to the top of the 6-yard box, where Marcelo slid and put the ball in with his left foot.

Gomez almost got another goal in the 64th, but his header off Johnson’s cross was cleared off the goal line by Romula. Three minutes later, Neymar found a streaking Pato in front of the goal, but his shot bounced off Howard’s near post.

Donovan then watched a deflected shot go a few yards wide in the 71st.

Brazil goalkeeper Cabral, making his national team debut, had a fine double save in the 76th, stopping Gomez with his left hand, then kicking away Jones’ effort. Cabral leaped to palm Bradley’s header over the crossbar in the 85th, and Onyewu headed the ball off the crossbar on Donovan’s free kick.

Pato entered in the 65th and appeared to be offside when he scored off a pass from Marcelo, Pato’s first goal for Brazil since July.

NFL Pro Bowl set for next year in Honolulu

will be the site of next year’s . (Marco Garcia/)

(PhatzRadio / ) — After a promise from players that the game will be more competitive, the NFL will hold the in Honolulu next Jan. 27, a week before the .

had made it clear cancelling the all-star game was a possibility after the uninspired play of this year’s 59-41 AFC victory. Following discussions between the league and the players’ union, the NFL announced Wednesday that Aloha Stadium would host the Pro Bowl for the third straight year.

It will be the 33rd Pro Bowl in Hawaii.

“The players have made it clear through the that they would like the opportunity to continue to play the Pro Bowl in Hawaii,” said vice-president . “We will support the players on this initiative to improve the Pro Bowl. We have had many discussions with the players in recent years about the Pro Bowl and they recognize that the quality of the game has not been up to NFL standards. We look forward to working with the players toward the goal of improving the of this season’s game.”

The Pro Bowl was held in Hawaii from 1980-2009. In 2010, the NFL moved the game to the week before the for the first time, and it was held in Miami, site of the that year. The Pro Bowl returned to Hawaii for the 2011 and 2012 games but remained one week before the .

“The players believe that the Pro Bowl is an important tradition,” NFLPA President said. “We worked hard with the league to make sure the best players in the NFL are honoured for their achievements on the field.”

News of the Pro Bowl’s return was met with praise by Hawaii tourism officials and Gov. . Both Abercrombie and Mike McCartney, chief executive of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, hinted the state plans to deepen its ties to the league by helping it establish relationships in Asia — a continent with several major markets for tourism to the Aloha State.

“Beyond Hawaii’s shores, we look forward to assisting the NFL in expanding upon their relationships in Japan, and help them to establish a presence in China — both important markets for Hawaii tourism,” McCartney said.

McCartney said the relationship of more than 30 years goes beyond the Pro Bowl game itself and both the state and the NFL would work on improving the overall experience.

“Hawaii looks forward to building upon our long-standing relationship with the well into the future,” McCartney said.

Honolulu Mayor Peter Carlisle said he was “thrilled that the NFL Pro Bowl is going to return in 2013.”

“Our residents, visitors, military, and many others look forward to this exciting event,” he added. “There is electricity in the air when the Pro Bowl is approaching and the festive atmosphere continues even after the game as people stay here to enjoy our beautiful island home. The Pro Bowl has long had the support of the city and county of Honolulu.”

David Uchiyama, the chief negotiator for the tourism authority in its talks with the NFL, said the state is pushing to follow the current one-year deal with a longer agreement that would put the Pro Bowl in Honululu at least five times in seven years.

Uchiyama said the current deal’s financial terms were similar to the previous one, with the state paying the league about $4.2 million to host the game. He added his talks with the league have included introducing longer-term ideas that reach far beyond the Pro Bowl, such as establishing a developmental league based in Hawaii.

“That’s really a dream,” he said.

Goodell had expressed his displeasure with this year’s game several times, acknowledging it could be scrapped if the level of play doesn’t improve.

“The issue is we recognize it is an all-star game, but we also believe fans expect more from an NFL game,” he said recently. “If we believe we can achieve that, we want to give them every opportunity to do that.”

For last January’s game, TV ratings were strong, with 12.5 million viewers, making the Pro Bowl the most watched of all all-star games for the 2011 season.

“The players have made it clear through the that they would like the opportunity to continue to play the Pro Bowl in Hawaii,” said NFL -president . “We will support the players on this initiative to improve the Pro Bowl. We have had many discussions with the players in recent years about the Pro Bowl and they recognize that the quality of the game has not been up to NFL standards. We look forward to working with the players toward the goal of improving the competitiveness of this season’s game.”

The Pro Bowl was held in Hawaii from 1980-2009. In 2010, the NFL moved the game to the week before the Super Bowl for the first time, and it was held in Miami, site of the Super Bowl that year. The Pro Bowl returned to Hawaii for the 2011 and 2012 games but remained one week before the Super Bowl.

“The players believe that the Pro Bowl is an important tradition,” NFLPA President said. “We worked hard with the league to make sure the best players in the NFL are honoured for their achievements on the field.”

News of the Pro Bowl’s return was met with praise by Hawaii and Gov.

(PhatzRadio / ) — Three months after its NASCAR future was thrown into by ’s impending departure to Ford, Dodge still seems without a firm plan for in 2013.

Recent reports have linked the manufacturer to an IndyCar team moving into Cup and suggested Dodge could make an announcement in two weeks at . But a Dodge executive said in a Wednesday statement to that nothing has been finalized.

“We identified a process for the evaluation of the 2013 NASCAR program,” said Beth Paretta, director of marketing and operations for Dodge’s SRT brand and motor sports. “We are continuing to follow that process and are within our established timeline. We’re pleased with the number of inquiries that have been received about the Dodge motor and continue the evaluation process. As decisions are made, we will announce them at that time.”

Aside from not having any teams in its 2013 lineup, Dodge also hasn’t settled on an engine builder. The manufacturer could cut a deal to keep receiving motors from Penske’s shop or could start its own engine room.

Because such a hasn’t been solidified, it has raised questions about the NASCAR commitment of Italy’s Fiat, which acquired Dodge’s parent company, Chrysler, three years ago.

In the past year, Dodge has branched into motor sports with younger demographics than NASCAR, such as motocross and Global RallyCross. Action sports superstar drives a Dodge Dart (which recently was relaunched) in RallyCross.

“It’s clear that the enthusiasts in Auburn Hills (Mich.) led by SRT chief are very much interested in continuing the Dodge NASCAR program,” said Peter De Lorenzo, editor of the AutoExtremist.com website and a auto industry consultant with 35 years in the business. “But it’s also just as clear that key Fiat executives remain unconvinced as to the validity of NASCAR’s return on their investment.”

With nearly all of NASCAR’s powerhouse teams locked up in long-term deals with Chevrolet, Ford or Toyota, the options in Cup are limited for Dodge. A FoxSports.com report last month listed Andretti Autosport as a candidate.

Andretti Autosport spokesman Jade Gurss wouldn’t comment directly on the NASCAR reports but said the Izod IndyCar Series team, which fields Dallara-Chevrolets for Marco Andretti, James Hinchcliffe and Ryan-Hunter Reay, is “aggressively looking to diversify our business, and that’s why we seriously analyze each business opportunity.” Andretti’s sports marketing division has branched into promoting IndyCar races this season at Milwaukee and Baltimore.

Current Cup teams without a manufacturer deal for next year include Richard Petty Motorsports, Furniture Row Racing and Front Row Motorsports. Furniture Row and RPM declined to comment. Last month, owner Richard Petty cast doubt on his team’s future with Dodge. “I think they’re pretty confused, because they got a plug pulled out of them and wasn’t really expecting it,” he said. “I would imagine they’re going to have to sit down and have some prayer meetings to figure out really what they’re going to do.”

Front Row general manager Jerry Freeze told USA TODAY Sports his team had informal talks with Dodge “but nothing of substance” since the March 1 announcement of Penske’s switch to Ford.

“The feedback is generally they have decisions to make on where they’re going to be in the sport next year,” Freeze said. “I don’t know if they’d have interest in our team, not that we’re terribly unhappy with our deal with Ford. We’d like to be a little better, but Ford still is very beneficial from a technology standpoint.”

Given the horsepower of Roush Yates Racing engines is considered tops in NASCAR, Freeze said his team wouldn’t be interested in a lateral move from Ford, which has more lucrative contracts with Roush Fenway Racing and RPM. “Front Row in the overall food chain of NASCAR still has a pretty good deal,” Freeze said. “But we have to look at what’s best for us, and if someone offered more substance, i.e. cash, it’d need to be looked at.”

Time is growing short on a decision because of NASCAR’s switch to a new model next year. The car’s bodies will require new templates and pieces, and the team is planning to build chassis starting Oct. 1, several weeks earlier than in past seasons. “With the old body, you could drag it out the first of January and still make some updates, but now I don’t see how you can wait,” Freeze said. “The longer you do, the further you get behind.”

NHRA to New England: The NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series will expand in the northeast next year, adding a June 23 event at New England Dragway in Epping, N.H.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — East. West. It doesn’t make a difference to the Los Angeles Kings.

All they have done in the playoffs is win and the Eastern New Jersey Devils became their latest victim.

Anze Kopitar scored a spectacular goal on a breakaway with 11:47 left in overtime Wednesday night and the Kings beat the Devils 2-1 in Game 1 of the .

“From a series standpoint, it’s huge to put them behind us, right off the get-go,” Kings captain said. “It makes it a little more difficult for them to get back into it if we play our game and do the right things.”

Kopitar did everything perfectly on his breakaway after taking a great chip pass from . He faked a backhand shot, put the puck on his forehand and beat a prone Martin Brodeur.

“All losses this time of year are really hard to take because your dream is slowly shutting down,” Brodeur said. “We lost one game, there’s six games left in this series. They need to win three. We need to win four.”

Los Angeles has won all nine of its road games in the playoffs, an . The Kings are now one win shy of tying the for postseason road victories.

More importantly, they are three wins away from the franchise’s first NHL title since entering the league in 1967-68. They have won 11 consecutive road playoff games dating back to last season.

Los Angeles is now 13-2 this postseason.

Kopitar saw Justin Williams battling with Devils defenseman and forward along the boards.

“I wanted to make sure I went to the middle,” Kopitar said. “I don’t know if he heard me or not, but I yelled for the puck and he chipped it. It was perfect, right on my tape. It happened pretty quick and I was able to finish it off.”

As soon as he rifled the puck into the net, Kopitar raised his hands and banged himself into the boards, facing the crowd off to Brodeur’s right.

“To put it past a goaltender like Marty,” Kopitar said, “is a good feeling.”

The veteran goaltender dejectedly skated off to the locker room as the rest of the Kings piled on Kopitar.

Williams said his setup was a prayer.

“I just threw an area pass,” he said. “I hoped that he was alone and he was. I’ve played with him a long time. You just kind of feel it. If it wasn’t there, it would have went to nobody.

“It was a no-lose situation.”

This is the third straight series in which the Devils have lost the first game.

“I think it was probably the worst game in the playoffs for us,” said Devils leading scorer Ilya Kovalchuk, who was limited to one shot. “Maybe we were a little too nervous before the game started, but it’s all excuses. We’ve got to make sure we know what we didn’t do right, and be a different team next game.”

Fourth-line center Colin Fraser scored in the first period for the Kings, the No. 8 seed in the West who beat the top three teams to get to their first since 1993.

Anton Volchenkov tied it late in the second period for New Jersey, the East’s sixth seed.

Kings goaltender Quick finished with 17 saves in what was a relatively easy night. Brodeur had 23 saves as the Devils lost in overtime for just the second time this postseason; they have won four times. Los Angeles is 3-0 after regulation this spring.

The Devils had two great chances to take the lead early in the third, and for a split second it appeared they went ahead with 16:02 to play in regulation when scored off a wild goal-mouth scramble.

While the horns went off and the fans celebrated, Dan O’Halloran quickly waved off the goal.

It was reviewed in Toronto and replay clearly showed Parise swept the puck into the net with his hand.

Defenseman Mark Fayne was probably kicking himself six minutes later when he missed a wide-open net from the edge of the crease in what was the Devils’ best period of the night.

“We didn’t deserve to win tonight, and we didn’t,” said Devils veteran Patrik Elias, a member of their Cup-winning teams in 2000 and 2003.

The Kings had their chances, too, with Brodeur making two outstanding saves about 10 seconds apart. He made a stacked-pad save on a one-timer by defenseman Drew Doughty from 30 feet after a drop pass from Mike Richards. A turnover seconds later set up forward Dustin Penner for a shot from the left circle.

The Kings came into the finals after steamrolling Vancouver, St. Louis and Phoenix in just 14 games, and they made the Devils look ordinary in the first 40 minutes, holding them to nine shots.

But a fluke goal by Volchenkov tied the game with 1:12 left in the second.

Volchenkov took a shot from the left point that Quick kicked away in front. The puck went airborne, avoided Elias in front and hit off the shoulder of Kings defenseman Slava Voynov before going into the net.

Until then, Fraser’s first career playoff goal was beginning to look like the winner.

It was a typical Kings’ goal, created off the forecheck — by the fourth line, no less.

Jordan Nolan checked New Jersey’s Andy Greene behind the Devils’ net, outfought him for the puck and found Fraser between the circles for a shot that beat Brodeur 9:56 into the game.

The Kings had chances to extend the lead, but Brodeur, who was the difference in the Devils’ victory over the rival Rangers in the conference finals, made three good saves. The best stop by the 40-year-old, three-time Cup winner came on the opening shift of the second, when he blocked Kopitar point blank on the edge of the crease.

Kopitar, of course, would get one past Brodeur much later in the evening.

Brodeur also stopped forward Jeff Carter from in close and made a big pad stop on Penner in the second.

The Devils were held without a shot for more than 14 minutes of the period before Parise was credited with one on a short-handed attempt in which the puck rolled off his stick into the crease.

Quick, who wasn’t very busy in the first two periods, made his best save with a glove stop on Zubrus from the left circle after a turnover.

However, New Jersey managed to tie it on Volchenkov’s strange goal.

The tally came just after Quick got into a tussle with Parise in the crease, and refused to let the Devils’ captain get up after he fell as Parise lost his helmet.

“I think we’re going to have to find another level,” Devils coach Peter DeBoer said. “We were a little tentative, as was expected for a Stanley Cup final. I think we got better as the game went along, but you have to play 60 minutes against that team.

“We have to be better than we were tonight.”

NOTES: Less than a minute into the game, the chant of “BEAT L-A” echoed through the arena. … Doug O’Neill, the trainer of Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner I’ll Have Another, was on hand, as was New York Giants offensive lineman Chris Snee and New York Jets coach Rex Ryan. … Volchenkov’s goal was his first in the playoffs since Game 3 of the 2007 Stanley Cup finals when he played for Ottawa against Anaheim. … Kopitar’s goal was his second OT winner in the postseason. The other was in 2010 at Vancouver. He has 12 points in the last nine games, including six goals. …The was the first Game 1 of the finals that went to overtime since 2002, when the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 at Joe Louis Arena on a goal by Ron Francis, just 58 seconds past regulation.
