Breaking News: Monkees Singer Davy Jones Dead at 66

(Davy Jones performs at "The Classic Rock and Roll Party, a Tribute to Clarence Clemons at Hard Rock Live!" in the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida on October 1st, 2011. Larry Marano/Getty Images) (Phatforums News / Rolling Stones) --- Davy Jones of the Monkees has died of an apparent heart attack at age 66. The singer – who had been on a solo tour this month - complained of chest pains last evening and was admitted to a hospital this morning in Stuart, Florida. Jones was born in Manchester, England and started acting as a child. In 1964 he had the misfortune of appearing in the cast of Oliver! on the same episode where the Beatles made their debut. The next year he was cast in The Monkees, a comedy show/band inspired by the success of the Beatles. They were an instant hit in the ratings and the record shops, scoring massive singles with "Last Train To Clarksdale," "I'm A Believer," "Stepping Stone" and "Pleasant Valley Sunday." Jones – who played tambourine in the band – was the lead vocalist on the classics "Daydream Believer" and "I Wanna Be Free." At the peak of their popularity in 1967 they sold more albums than the Beatles. Photos: Davy Jones Through the Years The Monkees music was written by some of the best songwriters of the day, including Carole King and Neil Diamond. As the group grew more popular, they insisted on writing their own music and playing their own instruments. Although their later work has attracted a huge cult audience over the years, their mainstream success quickly dwindled and the group split in 1971. Jones went onto a solo career, and he memorably performed his song "Girl" on an episode of The Brady Bunch. Jones returned to acting in the late 1970s when his solo career failed to take off, but he found it difficult to escape the shadow of the Monkees. By the mid-1980s Monkee mania was reborn when MTV and other stations began regularly airing old episodes of the tv show. The band – minus Mike Nesmith – reunited for a highly successful reunion tour in 1986. They toured off and on through 2001 when infighting led to another split. Last summer they patched things up for a 45h anniversary tour, though it was called short because of what guitarist Peter Tork called a "glitch." Jones was on a solo tour at the time of his death, playing as recently as last week. … [Read more...]

NASCAR: Daytona 500 night to remember

(February 26, 2012 – Photo by Jerry Markland/Getty Images North America) (PhatzRadio / USA Today) — DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – An eerie fog settled in over Daytona International Speedway at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, 30 minutes after the 36 Hours of the Daytona 500 had been won by Matt Kenseth. As weary teams waited on the runway of the airport behind the track’s backstretch, social media sites began exploding with the incredulous and defeated musings of Sprint Cup stars and crewmembers realizing their planes couldn’t take off in the soup. After the longest, most bizarre Speedweeks in history, they still couldn’t get off the ground. PHOTOS: A wild Speedweeks in pictures MORE: NASCAR says cellphones in cars OK MORE: How safety crew cleaned up track And after weathering stoppages for fire and rain and the first postponement in the 54th running of the Great American Race, some were pondering whether NASCAR is facing the same problem. “The thing that comes into my mind is NASCAR can’t catch a break,” said runner-up Dale Earnhardt Jr., whose last-lap charge on Kenseth fell 0.210 seconds short when the checkered flag fell at 12:56 a.m. “We’re trying to deliver, and we just have some unfortunate things happen such as the rain delay, potholes in the track a couple years ago or whatever. We’re a good sport, and we’re just trying to give a good product.” It might not have been precisely the season kickoff NASCAR was seeking after an avalanche of hype surrounding Danica Patrick’s Sprint Cup debut and a dramatic finish to the 2011 season. The early returns, though, indicated it might not have blunted the sport’s momentum considering Fox said the race drew more than 36 million total viewers (who saw all or part of it) — the second-largest audience in Daytona 500 history. NASCAR estimated about 140,000 fans were in the stands. “It compares in a very favorable manner to anything this side of the NFL,” said Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage, who had predicted the telecast could be a watershed similar to the 1979 race that ended with a brawl on the backstretch. “It was a very successful evening for NASCAR and Fox. “This is one of those events when down the road you’ll remind everyone about the night that crazy accident happened at Daytona. The donnybrook (in 1979) had more to do with competition than a bizarre accident. But everybody is talking about it today. I’m … [Read more...]

Golf: Woods’ agent rips ex-coach’s book

Tiger Woods looks on from the second hole during the second round of the World Golf Championships-Accenture Match Play Championship at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club on February 23, 2012 in Marana, Arizona. (February 22, 2012 – Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images North America) PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) – Tiger Woods’ agent lashed out Tuesday against Hank Haney’s book, saying his “armchair psychology” about Woods was “ridiculous” and that it was clear the former swing coach only cares about self-promotion. Haney’s book about his six years as Woods’ coach is titled The Big Miss. It is to go on sale March 27, a week before the Masters. Golf Digest began releasing small excerpts Tuesday on its tablet applications and on its website. Haney’s book was written with help from Jaime Diaz, a senior writer at the magazine who has covered Woods extensively over the years. BLOG: Woods wanted to be a SEAL In one of the excerpts, Haney, a McKinney, Texas, golf guru, said his job became more difficult in 2007, when Woods had 12 majors and was getting closer to the record 18 won by Jack Nicklaus. “There was more urgency and less fun. … He never mentioned Nicklaus’ record, but it started to weigh more heavily at every major,” the excerpt said. “And Tiger’s actions indicated he believed he had less time to do it than everyone thought.” Haney said the objective of revamping his swing was to preserve his left knee. He also said Woods was seriously considering becoming a Navy SEAL. Woods’ father, Earl, was a Green Beret in the Army who did two tours during the Vietnam War. “I didn’t know how he’d go about it, but when he talked about it, it was clear he had a plan,” Haney writes in the excerpt. “I thought, ‘Wow, here is Tiger Woods, greatest athlete on the planet, maybe the greatest athlete ever, right in the middle of his prime, basically ready to leave it all behind for a military life.’” Mark Steinberg, Woods’ agent at Excel Sports Management, said in a statement that excerpts show Haney’s claim of the book being about golf is “clearly false.” “His armchair psychology about Tiger, on matters he admits they didn’t even discuss, is ridiculous,” Steinberg said. “Because of his father, it’s no secret that Tiger has always had high respect for the military, so for Haney to twist that admiration into something negative is disrespectful.” Haney also mentions the time Woods spent four days of special operations training in 2004 at Fort Bragg, N.C. “Tiger did two tandem parachute jumps, engaged in hand-to-hand combat exercises, went on four-mile runs wearing combat boots, and did drills in a wind tunnel,” Haney wrote. “Tiger loved it, but his physical therapist, Keith Kleven, went a little crazy worrying about the further damage Tiger might be doing … [Read more...]

NBA Roundup: Boston beats Cleveland 86-83

99a3b3f961b03d68e0a42691624c0c64

CLEVELAND (AP) — Ray Allen scored 22 points, Kevin Garnett added 18 and the Boston Celtics beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 86-83 on Tuesday night to snap a five-game losing streak. Boston, which couldn’t hold a 16-point lead in the first quarter, avoided its first six-game skid since dropping seven in a row from April 4-15, 2007. Kyrie Irving returned from a bruised elbow that sidelined him late in the second quarter and led Cleveland with 24 points, 19 in the second half. Irving hit two free throws with 1:21 remaining to give Cleveland an 81-80 lead. After Allen missed a 3-pointer, Garnett tipped Irving’s pass, leading to Allen’s dunk with 48.6 seconds left. NETS 93, MAVERICKS 92 DALLAS (AP) — Brook Lopez scored 38 points in only his third game back from a broken right foot, and made the go-ahead free throws with 42 seconds left for New Jersey. The two free throws by Lopez came right after the Mavericks had taken the lead with a 13-2 run after missing 14 consecutive field goals. Jason Kidd’s 3-pointer from the right wing only 6 seconds earlier had put Dallas ahead 92-91. Jason Terry forced a turnover with 18 seconds left, and Dallas called timeout. Kidd then had the ball in the left corner, but it was knocked loose by DeShawn Stevenson. Kidd got it back but his desperate heave at the buzzer was short. BULLS 99, HORNETS 95 CHICAGO (AP) — Derrick Rose scored 32 points, including the go-ahead jumper with 19.4 seconds left, and Chicago closed with an 8-0 run. Joakim Noah had 15 points and 16 rebounds for the Bulls and Carlos Boozer and Luol Deng added 14 points apiece. Rose scored six points in Chicago’s final run. Chris Kaman had 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Hornets and Trevor Ariza scored 16 points. The Hornets stunned the Bulls by scoring 13 consecutive points to turn a nine-point deficit into a four-point lead with 1:26 left before Rose rescued Chicago. PACERS 102, WARRIORS 78 INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Danny Granger scored 25 points to help Indiana win its fifth straight. Tyler Hansbrough scored 15 points and Roy Hibbert added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Pacers, who remained in third place in the Eastern Conference. The Pacers topped 100 points for the fourth straight game after doing so just six times before the current stretch. Monta Ellis and Brandon Rush each scored 14 points for the Warriors, who finished with season lows in points and field-goal percentage (.341). Golden State guard Stephen Curry sat out with a strained tendon in his right foot. The Warriors missed the 45-percent 3-point shooter — they made just 1 of 17 3s in the first three quarters. 76ERS 97, PISTONS 68 AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) — Thaddeus Young scored 12 of his 20 points in a pivotal second quarter and All-Star Andre Iguodala had 12 points, six assists and four steals to help Philadelphia snap a five-game losing streak. Sixers coach Doug Collins left the bench between the third and fourth quarters, walking to the team’s locker room, and didn’t … [Read more...]

NHL Roundup: Ottawa shuts out Boston 1-0

Erik Karlsson #65 of the Ottawa Senators celebrates his first period goal with teammates Filip Kuba #17 and Milan Michalek #9 against the Boston Bruins during an NHL game at Scotiabank Place on February 25, 2012 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. (February 24, 2012 – Photo by Jana Chytilova/Freestyle Photo/Getty Images North America) BOSTON (AP) — Robin Lehner stopped 32 shots for his first NHL shutout and defenseman Erik Karlsson scored the lone goal, lifting surging Ottawa to a 1-0 win over Boston on Tuesday night. It was the Senators’ first victory in five games against the Bruins this season. The Senators moved one point behind the Northeast Division-leading Bruins, who have played four fewer games. Ottawa won for the sixth time in seven games and sent the Bruins to their fourth loss in six. The 20-year old Lehner was playing in just his 11th NHL game. He started because regular goalie Craig Anderson is sidelined indefinitely after cutting his hand last week in a kitchen accident. Tim Thomas made 37 saves for the Bruins, but lost to a divisional opponent for just the second time in 14 games. SHARKS 1, FLYERS 0 SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — Ryane Clowe scored the lone goal early in the first period and Antti Niemi made it stand up with 26 saves for his fifth shutout as San Jose returned home from a grueling road trip and beat Philadelphia. The Sharks had gone 2-6-1 on the 17-day trip that knocked them out of first place in the Pacific Division and into a precarious position for a playoff berth. With little room for error in the final quarter of the season, the Sharks managed to hold on thanks to a strong bounceback performance by Niemi to beat the Flyers for the ninth straight time. Niemi lost four of five games on the trip and didn’t even make it out of the first period in two of those games. The Sharks allowed 35 goals during the road trip but gave up none to the NHL’s highest-scoring team, surviving a wild scramble in front of the net in the final minute. Ilya Bryzgalov made 22 saves for the Flyers, who remained 11 points behind the first-place New York Rangers in the Atlantic Division. Philadelphia was shut out for the second time in three games. COYOTES 2, CANUCKS 1, SO GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Mike Smith stopped 39 shots, Ray Whitney scored in the third period and during the shootout, and Phoenix extended its point streak to 12 games by beating NHL-leading Vancouver. Smith allowed a goal on a carom in the first period, but nothing else. He stopped Alexander Edler and Mason Raymond in the shootout to extend his career-best and franchise-record winning streak to 11 games. Whitney scored in the third period to tie it and Mikkel Boedker sealed Phoenix’s sixth straight win with a nifty move to beat Cory Schneider in the shootout. The Pacific Division-leading Coyotes have won seven straight home games. Edler scored in the first period, and Schneider stopped 34 shots, but allowed goals on two of three shots in the shootout. College Basketball Roundup: Duke escapes with a 79-71 win vs Wake Forest

a96a36742f304f6788c2c32d2bdefa74

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Ryan Kelly scored a career-high 23 points and No. 4 Duke held on to beat Wake Forest 79-71 on Tuesday night for its seventh straight win. Kelly put up 20 points against the Demon Deacons for the third straight time, and Seth Curry finished with 15 points for the Blue Devils (26-4, 13-2 Atlantic Coast Conference). Duke led by 23 points with 9 1/2 minutes left before Wake Forest made things tense late. Nikita Mescheriakov and Tony Chennault both had 18 points for the Demon Deacons (13-16, 4-11). Their best chance came when they had the ball down 72-66 with less than 2 minutes left. But after Chennault missed a 3-pointer, Duke milked the shot clock and Miles Plumlee chased down the critical offensive rebound of Tyler Thornton’s missed jumper with just over 1 minute left. Curry hit two free throws with 48.9 seconds left to make it 74-66. The Blue Devils become the third team in school history — and first since 1999-2000 — to finish 8-0 in ACC road games and remained on a roll entering Saturday night’s visit from No. 6 North Carolina. NO. 18 INDIANA 70, NO. 5 MICHIGAN ST. 55 BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) — Cody Zeller scored 18 points and Victor Oladipo added 13 for Indiana in its third victory over a top five team this season. The Hoosiers (22-7, 10-7 Big Ten) are the second team to achieve that feat this season, joining Kansas which did it with a win over Missouri on Saturday. Indiana upset No. 1 Kentucky and No. 2 Ohio State in December and now the Spartans, who could have clinched their second outright Big Ten title in four seasons with a victory. Draymond Green had 29 points for Michigan State (24-6, 13-4), which can still win the outright crown with a victory over No. 10 Ohio State on Sunday. Michigan State had won six straight in the series and seven straight overall. It was Indiana coach Tom Crean’s first win over Tom Izzo, his former boss at Michigan State. NO. 14 WISCONSIN 52, MINNESOTA 45 MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Jordan Taylor scored 22 points to lead Wisconsin, which clinched a first-round bye in the Big Ten tournament. Both teams shot poorly, there were 43 fouls called and the teams combined to shoot 58 free throws. But the Badgers (22-8, 11-6 Big Ten) found their shooting touch in the second half to secure at least a fourth-place finish in the conference. Minnesota (17-13, 5-12) led 23-16 at halftime. But Wisconsin opened the second half on a 9-2 run to tie it at 25 on a three-point play by Mike Bruesewitz. Minutes later, with the game tied at 27, Minnesota coach Tubby Smith was called for a technical foul, and Taylor hit both free throws to give Wisconsin its first lead since 11-10 midway through the first half. Taylor followed with a 3-pointer, and Wisconsin didn’t trail the rest of the way. Andre Hollins led the Gophers with 18 points, while Ralph Sampson III finished with eight points to give him 1,004 for his career. He is the fifth player in Minnesota history with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 150 … [Read more...]

NBA: Wade says he apologized to Bryant for rough foul in All-Star Game

16b38ccdebd23d116544250ca2efcf1d

Kobe Bryant #24 of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Western Conference drives against Dwyane Wade #3 of the Miami Heat and and the Eastern Conference during the 2012 NBA All-Star Game at the Amway Center on February 26, 2012 in Orlando, Florida. (February 25, 2012 – Photo by Ronald Martinez/Getty Images North America) MIAMI (AP) — Insisting he meant no harm, Dwyane Wade revealed Tuesday that he has apologized to Los Angeles Lakers guard Kobe Bryant multiple times for a blood-drawing, nose-breaking foul during the All-Star game. The first of those apologies, Wade said, came during the game when he saw Bryant’s face had been bloodied. Wade also said he sent the Lakers’ star a message after the game in Orlando, Fla. on Sunday night. Wade said critics who questioned why he never offered an apology for the play – the likes of which seemed to be something not typical in an All-Star game setting – simply made incorrect assumptions. “I don’t care what I’m portrayed as,” Wade said after Miami’s first practice following the league’s All-Star break. “It’s unfortunate, obviously. I don’t want to ever hurt anybody in this game, especially on a freak play like that. It’s unfortunate. I send my apologies. But it’s not intentional. If it’s something I did intentionally, it’d be a different story.” A week ago, the Heat could make jokes about how they were out of the NBA spotlight, bumped by the meteoric rise of Jeremy Lin in New York. Now it’s a different story. Two plays seem to be generating the most attention from the All-Star game – Wade’s hard foul against Bryant and LeBron James’ ill-advised pass at the end of what became a three-point loss for the Eastern Conference. “It’s an All-Star game. I mean, come on,” said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, who couldn’t answer a question about what he thought of James’ play in the final seconds because he said he didn’t watch the game or see any replays of it since. “It’s a continuation of the theater of the absurd. I don’t even know if it’s going to motivate me to actually even look at it. I haven’t seen it. “There’s nothing we can do about it, about the extreme exaggeration about everything that happens with our team,” Spoelstra continued. “All we can focus on is us. And at the end of the season, hopefully it ends the right way, and that’ll ultimately be the only way we can shut people up.” The Heat enter the second half of the season tied with Oklahoma City for the league’s best record at 27-7. Miami starts a three-game road trip Thursday night in Portland, followed by a game at Utah – and then, in a nationally televised game that probably got a whole lot more interesting, at the Lakers on Sunday afternoon. Bryant stayed in after the Wade hit, and the Lakers said Tuesday … [Read more...]

NFL Plaxico: Nothing ‘would make me happier’ than being an Eagle

1400ef9e0db53071b61602204d0d61ea

(PhatzRadio / USA Today) — Given his druthers, it sounds like WR Plaxico Burress hopes to wear a different shade of green in 2012. During an interview with 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia, Burress was asked about the possibility of signing with the Eagles once free agency starts. “Hey man, nothing else would make me happier,” he said, praising an offense that ranked fourth in the NFL in 2011 (399.1 ypg) and already boasts QB Michael Vick, RB LeSean McCoy and WRs Jeremy Maclin and DeSean Jackson (assuming Jackson is retained). Burress said he’d offer a “unique dynamic to what’s already in place” before noting: “I always say you can neutralize speed, but you can’t neutralize size. I mean, you can back off a guy who runs a 4.2 or 4.3 and keep him in front of you. But when you get down inside the 20 (yard line), 15, inside the red zone, you’re talking about a guy like me out there on the edge, I mean there’s only so many things you can do.” After serving nearly two years in prison on a handgun charge, Burress was back in the NFL last season for the first time since 2008. Playing on a one-year deal with the Jets, the 6-5, 232-pounder finished with 45 catches for 612 yards and eight TDs. He beat Eagles CB Nnamdi Asomugha for a spectacular 9-yard TD grab in the Jets’ 45-19 loss at Philadelphia in Week 15. Vick reached out to Burress while he was incarcerated, and the natives of Southeastern Virginia have become close friends. Those ties nearly led Burress to sign with Philadelphia last year. “For us to get together and be able to play together on a professional football team — especially coming from where we come from, and obviously going through the things we’ve gone through — I just think it would be a special deal,” said Burress. “I really think he can bring a championship to Philadelphia, and I would love to be a part of that.” Burress, 34, said he spent much of 2011 just getting his legs back under him. “This next year, I think I’ll be a lot stronger and getting back to doing the things I know I can do, and getting back to a place where I can let myself show,” he said. He expressed gratitude to the Jets for giving him an NFL lifeline and didn’t rule out re-signing with them. “(HC) Rex (Ryan) and (GM) Mike Tannenbaum and (owner) Woody Johnson, I have nothing but the utmost respect for them. They brought me into a situation not knowing what they would get out of me and just really pushed me on an individual level to get back to where I know I can be,” said Burress. “But I’m ready to go, man (for 2012 season). This second year, I’m going to start training here in a week or so. Being a free agent is an exciting time for me, being in a place I want to be, and Philadelphia is obviously one of those places.” NFL Plaxico: Nothing ‘would make me happier’ than being an … [Read more...]

Horse Racing: Algorithms injured, off Triple Crown trail

7fb9b289da2156c7d4470eba50266b0b

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Trainer Todd Pletcher says Kentucky Derby hopeful Algorithms is off the Triple Crown trail because of a leg injury that will require surgery. Algorithms was the morning-line favorite for the Fountain of Youth Stakes last weekend at Gulfstream Park. He was scratched before the race with a splint bone injury to his right front leg. X-rays Tuesday revealed a fracture, and the 3-year-old colt will be taken to Ocala, Fla., on Wednesday for surgery. Pletcher says in a statement that Algorithms is “definitely not going to make the Triple Crown.” The hope is he could return by late summer or early fall. Algorithms is owned by Jack Wolf of Starlight Racing. The colt has won all three of his races, including the Holy Bull on Jan. 12. Barbaro’s trainer has leading Ky. Derby contender (PhatzRadio / AP) — Six years after Barbaro, trainer Michael Matz has another star attraction for the Kentucky Derby. Union Rags confirmed his status as the Derby front-runner with an impressive four-length victory in the $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes over the weekend at Gulfstream Park. The win in his 3-year-old debut comes nearly four months after the colt’s lone defeat – by a head to Hansen in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Nov. 5. “You never know after a four-month rest. Do you have the horse fit enough? Did you do this? Did you do that?” Matz said. “You ask yourself 51 questions. I guess we did it right this time.” Matz took a similar path with Barbaro, who won the 2006 Derby before breaking down in the Preakness and sustaining injuries that ultimately led to the colt being euthanized. With his fourth win in five career starts, Union Rags remains No. 1 in the AP’s latest Run to the Roses Top 10 list of Derby contenders. The Dixie Union colt will have one more prep – the $1 million Florida Derby on March 31 – before heading to Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Derby on May 3. Algorithms, scratched before Sunday’s Fountain of Youth because of a splint bone injury in his right front leg, drops off the list after being ranked second. Hansen, set for his next start in Saturday’s Gotham at Aqueduct, moves up to No. 2, with El Padrino moving in at No. 3 following Saturday’s victory in the $300,000 Risen Star at the Fair Grounds. It was a weekend of ups and downs for trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey Javier Castellano. Pletcher trains Algorithms, and his other entry in the Fountain of Youth, 4-5 favorite Discreet Dancer, finished a distant third. Castellano, meanwhile, gave up the ride aboard Union Rags to stay with Algorithms. On the plus side, Pletcher trains and Castellano rides El Padrino, Union Rags breeder and owner Phyllis Wyeth was feeling confident in the winner’s circle at Gulfstream Park. “We were just out for a practice run. Can you believe that one? And we didn’t want him to peak to soon,” she said. As for comparisons … [Read more...]
