Breaking News: Monkees Singer Davy Jones Dead at 66

3def74a78756603b41cf6170a29574e5 Breaking News: Monkees Singer Davy Jones Dead at 66
(Davy Jones performs at “The Classic Rock and Roll Party, a Tribute to Clarence Clemons at Hard Rock Live!” in the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida on October 1st, 2011. Larry Marano/)

(Phatforums News / Rolling Stones) — Davy Jones of the Monkees has died of an apparent heart attack at age 66. The singer – who had been on a solo tour this month – complained of chest pains last evening and was admitted to a hospital this morning in Stuart, Florida.

Jones was born in Manchester, England and started acting as a child. In 1964 he had the misfortune of appearing in the cast of Oliver! on the same episode where the Beatles made their debut. The next year he was cast in The Monkees, a comedy show/band inspired by the success of the Beatles. They were an instant hit in the ratings and the record shops, scoring massive singles with “Last Train To Clarksdale,” “I’m A Believer,” “Stepping Stone” and “Pleasant Valley Sunday.” Jones – who played tambourine in the band – was the lead vocalist on the classics “Daydream Believer” and “I Wanna Be Free.” At the peak of their popularity in 1967 they sold more albums than the Beatles.

The Monkees music was written by some of the best songwriters of the day, including Carole King and Neil Diamond. As the group grew more popular, they insisted on writing their own music and playing their own instruments. Although their later work has attracted a huge cult audience over the years, their mainstream success quickly dwindled and the group split in 1971. Jones went onto a solo career, and he memorably performed his song “Girl” on an episode of The .

Jones returned to acting in the late 1970s when his solo career failed to take off, but he found it difficult to escape the shadow of the Monkees. By the mid-1980s Monkee mania was reborn when MTV and other stations began regularly airing old episodes of the tv show. The band – minus Mike Nesmith – reunited for a highly successful reunion tour in 1986. They toured off and on through 2001 when infighting led to another split. Last summer they patched things up for a 45h anniversary tour, though it was called short because of what guitarist Peter Tork called a “glitch.”

Jones was on a solo tour at the time of his death, playing as recently as last week.

(PhatzRadio / ) — DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – An eerie fog settled in over Daytona International Speedway at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, 30 minutes after the 36 Hours of the had been won by Matt Kenseth.

As weary teams waited on the runway of the airport behind the track’s backstretch, social media sites began exploding with the incredulous and defeated musings of stars and crewmembers realizing their planes couldn’t take off in the soup.

After the longest, most bizarre Speedweeks in history, they still couldn’t get off the ground.

And after weathering stoppages for and the first postponement in the 54th running of the Great American Race, some were pondering whether NASCAR is facing the same problem.

“The thing that comes into my mind is NASCAR can’t catch a break,” said runner-up Dale Earnhardt Jr., whose last-lap charge on Kenseth fell 0.210 seconds short when the checkered flag fell at 12:56 a.m. “We’re trying to deliver, and we just have some unfortunate things happen such as the , potholes in the track a couple years ago or whatever. We’re a good sport, and we’re just trying to give a good product.”

It might not have been precisely the season kickoff NASCAR was seeking after an avalanche of hype surrounding Danica Patrick’s Sprint Cup debut and a dramatic finish to the 2011 season. The early returns, though, indicated it might not have blunted the sport’s momentum considering Fox said the race drew more than 36 million total viewers (who saw all or part of it) — the second-largest audience in Daytona 500 history.

NASCAR estimated about 140,000 fans were in the stands.

“It compares in a very favorable manner to anything this side of the ,” said Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage, who had predicted the telecast could be a watershed similar to the 1979 race that ended with a brawl on the backstretch. “It was a very successful evening for NASCAR and Fox.

“This is one of those events when down the road you’ll remind everyone about the night that crazy accident happened at Daytona. The donnybrook (in 1979) had more to do with competition than a bizarre accident. But everybody is talking about it today. I’m getting tweets from people all over the world.”

The six-hour coverage for the first weeknight prime-time Cup race averaged an 8.0 national rating, down 8% from last year’s 8.7 (and up 4% from 2010, when a two-hour pothole repair led to a 7.7, the 500′s lowest rating).

The national rating peaked at 8.8 at 10 p.m., just after the 9:50 red flag for a spectacular inferno triggered by Juan Pablo Montoya spinning his car into a truck towing a jet dryer. The impact dumped 200 gallons of fuel all the way down the banking in Turn 3, and it burned for about five minutes before being extinguished. Fire images went viral on the Internet in minutes.

Web traffic to NASCAR.com set a single-day record for unique users (2.3 million, beating last year’s Daytona mark by 38%), and total video streams were up 96%. National sports talk radio host Jim Rome compared the race to a Michael Bay film and said it was better than any Monday Night Football game last season.

Surreal scenes

Among the other bizarre and compelling story lines that capped a week of crashes and fluky plot twists at Daytona:

•The two-hour stoppage to fix the track produced some of the most surreal driver scenes.

Brad Keselowski became the first driver to send tweets from his car and gained roughly 100,000 followers in the process. NASCAR said it wouldn’t fine him, as other professional sports have done with athletes tweeting during competition, though questions were raised about the legality of using digital devices in cars equipped with electronic fuel injection.

NASCAR announced late Tuesday that drivers could keep phones in their cars and continued to encourage the safe use of social media.

As soon as his Toyota stopped, Kyle Busch unbuckled, wriggled out of his cockpit and hopped the backstretch wall to dash to a port-a-potty. Patrick was followed by fans on her trip to the restroom.

At one point, Fox focused on a dozen drivers gathered in a circle (including Patrick, gesturing emphatically with a smile to two-time champion Terry Labonte) as if they were swapping stories between heat races at a local dirt track. What were they talking about?

“Nothing for the television,” Earnhardt told Fox with a smile.

•The return of pack racing (replacing the tandems hated by fans) sparked a renewed spirit in Earnhardt, as NASCAR’s most popular driver entertained fans with aggressive maneuvers and feisty radio transmissions in nearly ending a 130-race winless streak.

Samples of some of his chatter: After watching defending winner Trevor Bayne struggle to handle his car, Earnhardt said, “He’s got no business being out here. He’s been wrecking for four (expletive) laps.” And after NASCAR restarted the race after the fire: “I can’t believe they didn’t let us go look at (the burned pavement).”

“I’m really in a good place,” he said after his third second-place finish in 31 races. “I’m not frustrated at all, I promise. I’m in a great mood.”

•In ameliorating the on-track action through rules changes that increased the possibility of engines overheating, NASCAR also resurrected the massive multicar pileups synonymous with Daytona. More than 60 vehicles were wrecked in five events over 10 days.

Among the first victims Monday on lap 2 was Patrick. She finished 62 laps down in 38th place but still ahead of past champions Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch and Jimmie Johnson as wrecks involved 26 of the 43 cars in the race. Johnson, who won in 2006, was caught up when Elliott Sadler’s car got loose and was the first of three Hendrick cars out. The final caution came on lap 198, forcing a green-white-checkered finish.

The repercussions still might not be over for Johnson’s team, as the five-time champion’s crew chief, Chad Knaus, could face a stiff punishment today for an inspection violation last week.

Spotlight off winner

Overshadowed — naturally, again — by all of it was Kenseth, who became the ninth multiple winner of NASCAR’s crown jewel. The 2003 champion might have sealed his Hall of Fame candidacy, but he was bombarded with questions about the fire during a truncated media tour (a traditional champion’s breakfast was postponed, and a satellite media tour replaced the usual whirlwind of stops in NASCAR race markets, though Kenseth still was scheduled for Dallas, Los Angeles and San Francisco).

“I don’t mind doing it, but that doesn’t bother me too much,” Kenseth said with a wry smile during the shortest winner’s news conference since the 2001 Daytona 500 ended with Dale Earnhardt’s death. “It’s a busy few days. I’m sure they have a lot of things planned.”

It was a happy note during a rough winter for the Cambridge, Wis., native, whose 63-year-old mother died Feb. 2. Roush Fenway Racing, which downsized from four cars to three during the offseason after a significant sponsorship reduction, has scrambled to find funding for his No. 17 Ford. The team signed in mid-December but still is seeking to fill holes.

Kenseth likely shored things up with his 22nd career victory, which also was worth $1.5 million. Gossage, a close friend who often rides motorcycles with Kenseth, said, “I’m always giving him grief for having a 10- or 12-year-old bike with 30,000 miles on the front tire. He can at least afford to buy something new. But that’s the personality he is. It’s just Matt. He is low-key.”

Said Roush Fenway Racing teammate Carl Edwards, the pole-sitter who finished eighth after a late-race crash, “This is perfect for Matt. This is what he deserves. He’s a hard-core racer, and he’s a good man.”

Twists and turns

If the race hadn’t resumed after the fire, Kenseth’s win would have been gifted to Dave Blaney, a journeyman winless in 398 starts who hadn’t pitted from the lead under caution.

Blaney would have become the second consecutive driver to score his first win in the Daytona 500 (on the heels of Bayne in his second start last year) while falling right in line with an unpredictable week and a half at Daytona.

There were fluky winners in the Camping World Truck Series (unheralded John King, who was making his eighth start) and the Nationwide Series (James Buescher, who was running 11th entering the final corner when he dodged all of the cars that crashed ahead of his in a race that set a cable viewership record for the series with a 3.3 rating on ESPN).

Then, with teams scrambling for the turnaround required to move NASCAR’s traveling circus to Phoenix for Friday, the fog hit early Tuesday morning and stranded virtually the entire circuit in Central Florida.

Kevin Harvick— who had said just after finishing seventh, “It seems like we have been here for a month, but I’m happy to get in the plane and head home” — tweeted from the Daytona Beach runway: “It is like the week that won’t ever end.”

Harvick’s team waited until weather cleared, and he arrived home at 7 a.m. Other NASCAR team members elected not to wait, hitting the road and driving to Charlotte. Defending Nationwide Series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. hopped in a pickup (with Roush Pesident Steve Newmark riding shotgun) shortly after 2 a.m. for a seven-hour drive to the Charlotte area.

Many viewed it as quintessential Daytona, whose unpredictable draft often is symbolic of the capricious nature of stock car racing’s birthplace of speed.

“What a weird night,” Keselowski said. “It’s been a bizarre week, but that’s Daytona. You never know what to expect. That’s why it’s such a marquee race for us.”

, Fla. (AP) – ’ agent lashed out Tuesday against ’s book, saying his “armchair psychology” about Woods was “ridiculous” and that it was clear the former only cares about self-promotion.

Haney’s book about his six years as Woods’ coach is titled The Big Miss. It is to go on sale March 27, a week before the Masters.

Golf Digest began releasing small excerpts Tuesday on its tablet applications and on its website. Haney’s book was written with help from Jaime Diaz, a senior writer at the magazine who has covered Woods extensively over the years.

BLOG: Woods wanted to be a SEAL

In one of the excerpts, Haney, a McKinney, Texas, golf guru, said his job became more difficult in 2007, when Woods had 12 majors and was getting closer to the record 18 won by .

“There was more urgency and less fun. … He never mentioned Nicklaus’ record, but it started to weigh more heavily at every major,” the excerpt said. “And Tiger’s actions indicated he believed he had less time to do it than everyone thought.”

Haney said the objective of revamping his swing was to preserve his left knee.

He also said Woods was seriously considering becoming a . Woods’ father, Earl, was a Green Beret in the Army who did two tours during the Vietnam War.

“I didn’t know how he’d go about it, but when he talked about it, it was clear he had a plan,” Haney writes in the excerpt. “I thought, ‘Wow, here is Tiger Woods, greatest athlete on the planet, maybe the greatest athlete ever, right in the middle of his prime, basically ready to leave it all behind for a military life.’”

, Woods’ agent at Management, said in a statement that excerpts show Haney’s claim of the book being about golf is “clearly false.”

“His armchair psychology about Tiger, on matters he admits they didn’t even discuss, is ridiculous,” Steinberg said. “Because of his father, it’s no secret that Tiger has always had high respect for the military, so for Haney to twist that admiration into something negative is disrespectful.”

Haney also mentions the time Woods spent four days of special operations training in 2004 at Fort Bragg, N.C.

“Tiger did two tandem parachute jumps, engaged in hand-to-hand combat exercises, went on four-mile runs wearing combat boots, and did drills in a wind tunnel,” Haney wrote. “Tiger loved it, but his physical therapist, Keith Kleven, went a little crazy worrying about the further damage Tiger might be doing to his left knee.”

Haney said he was in the kitchen when Woods returned from a long run wearing Army boots. He said Woods told him he’s worn the boots before on the same route and told Haney, “I beat my best time.”

Woods is playing the next two weeks in south Florida, at the Honda Classic and Cadillac Championship at Doral, as he prepares for the Masters. Woods has not won at Augusta National since 2005.

“The disruptive timing of this book shows that Haney’s self-promotion is more important to him than any other person or tournament,” Steinberg said. “What’s been written violates the trust between a coach and player and someone also once considered a friend.”

Monta Ellis and Brandon Rush each scored 14 points for the Warriors, who finished with season lows in points and field-goal percentage (.341).

Golden State guard Stephen Curry sat out with a strained tendon in his right foot. The Warriors missed the 45-percent 3-point shooter — they made just 1 of 17 3s in the first three quarters.

76ERS 97, PISTONS 68

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) — Thaddeus Young scored 12 of his 20 points in a pivotal second quarter and All-Star Andre Iguodala had 12 points, six assists and four steals to help Philadelphia snap a five-.

Sixers coach Doug Collins left the bench between the third and fourth quarters, walking to the team’s locker room, and didn’t return to the court because of flulike symptoms.

Atlantic Division-leading Philadelphia beat the Pistons twice at home by an average of 22 points and routed them on the road now in the first game after the All-Star break.

Philadelphia’s Elton Brand scored 10 points, returning from a two-game absence because of a sprained right thumb.

Blake Griffin scored 30 points, Chris Paul added 27 and DeAndre Jordan had 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Clippers, who similarly faltered in the fourth quarter of a 101-98 home loss to the Timberwolves on Jan. 20. The defeat cut the Clippers’ division lead to a game over the .

KINGS 103, JAZZ 96

The city, the Kings and the announced a tentative deal Monday to finance a new arena that would be built by 2015 and keep the team in Sacramento for many years. The City Council will vote on the plan March 6.

Marcus Thornton scored 21 points and made five of six free throws in the final 16 seconds to help the Kings secure the win.

Rookie guard Isaiah Thomas had 18 points and eight assists for the Kings, who have won two straight. Thomas, the last player chosen in the 2011 draft, started his fifth consecutive game at point guard. He has scored 96 points in those five games to tie a franchise mark set by Otis Birdsong in 1977.

Devin Harris had 18 points and seven assists for the Jazz, who dropped their fourth straight and 11th in 14 February games.

ROCKETS 88, RAPTORS 85

HOUSTON (AP) — Kyle Lowry scored 26 points, Luis Scola had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Houston beat Toronto.

Kevin Martin scored 14 points, though he missed a key free throw with 11.7 seconds left that gave the Raptors a chance to tie it. But Linas Kleiza missed a long 3-point try, Martin corralled the rebound and the Rockets won for the 18th time in the last 25 games.

DeMar DeRozan scored 17 points, James Johnson had 16 and Ed Davis tied a career-high with 15 rebounds for the Raptors. Toronto outrebounded Houston 47-37, but went 2 for 17 from 3-point range and committed 17 turnovers.

The Rockets have won 25 consecutive games when holding their opponent below 90 points.

BUCKS 119, WIZARDS 118

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Ersan Ilyasova scored on a tip-in with 2.2 seconds left and Milwaukee handed Washington its fifth consecutive defeat.

Mike Dunleavy scored a season-high 28 points for the Bucks, who snapped a six-game losing streak at home.

Brandon Jennings took an inbounds pass with 6.8 seconds left and drove left of the lane, attempting a short jumper. It bounced off the rim, but Ilyasova had position and tipped in the miss for the winning points.

Roger Mason Jr. then received an inbounds pass on the baseline for Washington but was called for traveling with 1 second to go without getting off a shot.

John Wall gave the Wizards a 118-117 lead when he drove around Jennings and scored on a running, 8-foot jumper with 6.8 seconds remaining.

Niemi lost four of five games on the trip and didn’t even make it out of the first period in two of those games. The Sharks allowed 35 goals during the road trip but gave up none to the NHL’s highest-scoring team, surviving a wild scramble in front of the net in the final minute.

The Red Wings netted four goals in just over 10 minutes of the third period after falling behind on MacKenzie’s goal.

CAPITALS 3, ISLANDERS 2, OT

WASHINGTON (AP) — Alex Ovechkin scored at 1:35 of overtime after Troy Brouwer tallied twice in the final 3 1/2 minutes of regulation, giving Washington an improbable win over the New York Islanders.

Blanked by Evgeni Nabokov for 56 minutes, the Capitals mounted a stunning rally to win their third straight — their longest streak since an identical run in mid-January.

Brouwer cut the deficit to 2-1 with 3:29 left in regulation, and then, after Capitals coach Dale Hunter pulled goalie Michal Neuvirth, Brouwer deflected a shot by Brooks Laich past Nabokov to tie it with 25.5 seconds to play.

It was the fourth straight road loss for the Islanders, who were 13-1-5 when leading after two periods. Nabokov fell to 10-2 against the Capitals, who were 0-3 against the Islanders, the only Eastern Conference team they failed to defeat this season.

Josh Bailey and Matt Moulson scored for New York.

HURRICANES 4, PREDATORS 3

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Bryan Allen scored his first goal of the season on a breakaway coming out of the penalty box, and Carolina held on to beat Nashville.

Nashville’s Gabriel Bourque scored less than a minute later — at 2:16 of the third period — to cut Carolina’s lead to 4-3, but the Predators couldn’t tie it.

Eric Staal and Tim Brent scored power-plays goals in the second period, and Jamie McBain had Carolina’s first goal earlier in the frame.

Craig Smith and Colin Wilson also scored for Nashville, which had its two-game winning streak snapped. The Predators lost in regulation for just the sixth time since Dec. 28.

LIGHTNING 2, CANADIENS 1

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Steven Stamkos scored his NHL-leading 44th goal, and Tampa Bay beat slumping Montreal.

Adam Hall also scored for the Lightning, who are 11th in the Eastern Conference and trail eighth-place Washington by five points. Mathieu Garon finished with 23 saves.

David Desharnais scored for the Canadiens, who have lost five in a row and been outscored 16-5 in that stretch.

Tampa Bay went ahead 2-1 when Hall ended his 45-game goal drought, dating to the season opener against Carolina.

Desharnais had tied it with 3:58 left in the first.

PANTHERS 5, MAPLE LEAFS 3

TORONTO (AP) — Mike Santorelli scored twice for Florida in a road win over Toronto.

Loud chants of “Fire Wilson!” directed at coach Ron Wilson were heard twice during the third period as the Leafs lost for the ninth time in 10 games, including all four on a homestand. Toronto is four points out of a playoff position in the Eastern Conference.

Marcel Goc, Jason Garrison and Stephen Weiss also scored for Florida, which leads the Southeast Division with 72 points. Jose Theodore added 28 saves.

Phil Kessel, Nikolai Kulemin and Joffrey Lupul had goals for the Maple Leafs.

It was the fifth straight game in which Toronto fell behind 2-0.

The Hoosiers (22-7, 10-7 Big Ten) are the second team to achieve that feat this season, joining Kansas which did it with a win over Missouri on Saturday. Indiana upset No. 1 Kentucky and No. 2 Ohio State in December and now the , who could have clinched their second outright Big Ten title in four seasons with a victory.

Both teams shot poorly, there were 43 fouls called and the teams combined to shoot 58 free throws.

NBA: Wade says he apologized to Bryant for rough foul in All-Star Game

MIAMI (AP) — Insisting he meant no harm, revealed Tuesday that he has apologized to guard multiple times for a blood-drawing, nose-breaking foul during the All-Star game.

The first of those apologies, Wade said, came during the game when he saw Bryant’s face had been bloodied. Wade also said he sent the Lakers’ star a message after the game in Orlando, Fla. on Sunday night.

Wade said critics who questioned why he never offered an apology for the play – the likes of which seemed to be something not typical in an All-Star game setting – simply made incorrect assumptions.

“I don’t care what I’m portrayed as,” Wade said after Miami’s first practice following the league’s All-Star break. “It’s unfortunate, obviously. I don’t want to ever hurt anybody in this game, especially on a freak play like that. It’s unfortunate. I send my apologies. But it’s not intentional. If it’s something I did intentionally, it’d be a .”

A week ago, the Heat could make jokes about how they were out of the NBA spotlight, bumped by the meteoric rise of Jeremy Lin in New York.

Now it’s a .

seem to be generating the most attention from the All-Star game – Wade’s hard foul against Bryant and ’ ill-advised pass at the end of what became a three-point loss for the Eastern Conference.

“It’s an All-Star game. I mean, come on,” said , who couldn’t answer a question about what he thought of James’ play in the final seconds because he said he didn’t watch the game or see any of it since. “It’s a continuation of the theater of the absurd. I don’t even know if it’s going to motivate me to actually even look at it. I haven’t seen it.

“There’s nothing we can do about it, about the extreme exaggeration about everything that happens with our team,” Spoelstra continued. “All we can focus on is us. And at the end of the season, hopefully it ends the right way, and that’ll ultimately be the only way we can shut people up.”

The Heat enter the second half of the season tied with Oklahoma City for the league’s best record at 27-7. Miami starts a three-game road trip Thursday night in Portland, followed by a game at Utah – and then, in a nationally televised game that probably got a whole lot more interesting, at the Lakers on Sunday afternoon.

Bryant stayed in after the Wade hit, and the Lakers said Tuesday that he also got a concussion in the All-Star Game. Bryant is listed as day-to-day by the Lakers, who play host to Minnesota on Wednesday night.

“D-Wade didn’t, at all, go for a hard foul,” James said. “He went to wrap his arms up and accidentally hit him in the nose. … He meant to foul him but he didn’t mean to hard-foul him like that.”

Wade acknowledged that he did try to foul Bryant, and said he did so to stop the clock so he could approach a nearby referee to complain about fouls that he felt were committed against him and went uncalled.

So not long after a Pro Bowl that was deemed by fans and even Commissioner Roger Goodell as lacking any real sense of competition, the NBA’s version of a star-studded exhibition got too fiery down the stretch by some standards.

“Hey, what do you want?” Heat forward Chris Bosh said. “It was all about the game. It came down to the last possession. It was all for the fans. That’s what they want. You get competitors out there, it may go a certain particular way for a limited amount a time, but after a while guys, they’re really going to get after it. And those make the best games.

“That’s what people want to see.”

At the end, James found himself in the spotlight.

The East trailed by two points when James got the ball with about five seconds left near midcourt. Guarded by Bryant, James dribbled right, then tried slinging a one-handed diagonal pass back to his left. The pass was stolen by Blake Griffin, who made one free throw to close the scoring in the West’s 152-149 win.

It was reported Sunday that Bryant told James to shoot the ball in that situation, and James said afterwards he let his team down. But it didn’t end there.

That play has been questioned since.

“Is that something new?” James asked, rhetorically on Tuesday.

Wade apparently was ready to put the All-Star game behind him and said he was done discussing the issue after Tuesday. However, it’s almost certain to come up again when the Heat head out to face Bryant and the Lakers over the weekend.

“When I saw the blood in his nose, I was like, `Obviously, I wasn’t trying to do that, man,”‘ Wade said. “I don’t know if anybody wants me to get down on my knees in front of the world and do it. I don’t have to do that. … I send my apologies to Kobe and I move on from it.”

(PhatzRadio / ) — Given his , it sounds like WR hopes to wear a different shade of green in 2012.

During an interview with 97.5 The Fanatic in Philadelphia, Burress was asked about the possibility of signing with the Eagles once free agency starts.

“Hey man, nothing else would make me happier,” he said, praising an offense that ranked fourth in the in 2011 (399.1 ) and already boasts , RB and WRs and (assuming Jackson is retained).

Burress said he’d offer a “unique dynamic to what’s already in place” before noting: “I always say you can neutralize speed, but you can’t neutralize size. I mean, you can back off a guy who runs a 4.2 or 4.3 and keep him in front of you. But when you get down inside the 20 (yard line), 15, inside the , you’re talking about a guy like me out there on the edge, I mean there’s only so many things you can do.”

After serving nearly two years in prison on a handgun charge, Burress was back in the NFL last season for the first time since 2008.

Playing on a one-year deal with the , the 6-5, 232- finished with 45 catches for 612 yards and eight TDs. He beat Eagles CB for a spectacular 9-yard TD grab in the ’ 45-19 loss at Philadelphia in Week 15.

Vick reached out to Burress while he was incarcerated, and the of Southeastern Virginia have become close friends. Those ties nearly led Burress to sign with Philadelphia last year.

“For us to get together and be able to play together on a professional football team — especially coming from where we come from, and obviously going through the things we’ve gone through — I just think it would be a special deal,” said Burress. “I really think he can bring a championship to Philadelphia, and I would love to be a part of that.”

Burress, 34, said he spent much of 2011 just getting his legs back under him.

“This next year, I think I’ll be a lot stronger and getting back to doing the things I know I can do, and getting back to a place where I can let myself show,” he said.

He expressed gratitude to the Jets for giving him an NFL lifeline and didn’t rule out re-signing with them.

“(HC) Rex (Ryan) and (GM) Mike Tannenbaum and (owner) Woody Johnson, I have nothing but the utmost respect for them. They brought me into a situation not knowing what they would get out of me and just really pushed me on an individual level to get back to where I know I can be,” said Burress.

“But I’m ready to go, man (for 2012 season). This second year, I’m going to start training here in a week or so. Being a free agent is an exciting time for me, being in a place I want to be, and Philadelphia is obviously one of those places.”

Horse Racing: Algorithms injured, off Triple Crown trail

7fb9b289da2156c7d4470eba50266b0b Horse Racing: Algorithms injured, off Triple Crown trail

BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. (AP) — says hopeful Algorithms is off the Triple Crown trail because of a that will require surgery.

Algorithms was the morning-line favorite for the Stakes last weekend at . He was scratched before the race with a injury to his right front leg.

X-rays Tuesday revealed a fracture, and the 3-year-old colt will be taken to Ocala, Fla., on Wednesday for surgery. Pletcher says in a statement that Algorithms is “definitely not going to make the Triple Crown.” The hope is he could return by late summer or early fall.

Algorithms is owned by of Starlight Racing. The colt has won all three of his races, including the Holy Bull on Jan. 12.

(PhatzRadio / AP) — Six years after Barbaro, trainer has another for the .

Union Rags confirmed his status as the Derby front-runner with an impressive four- in the $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes over the weekend at .

The win in his 3-year-old debut comes nearly four months after the colt’s lone defeat – by a head to Hansen in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile on Nov. 5.

“You never know after a four-month rest. Do you have the horse fit enough? Did you do this? Did you do that?” Matz said. “You ask yourself 51 questions. I guess we did it right this time.”

Matz took a similar path with Barbaro, who won the 2006 Derby before breaking down in the Preakness and sustaining injuries that ultimately led to the colt being .

With his in five career starts, Union Rags remains No. 1 in the AP’s latest Run to the Roses Top 10 list of . The colt will have one more prep – the $1 million Florida Derby on March 31 – before heading to for the Kentucky Derby on May 3.

Algorithms, scratched before Sunday’s Fountain of Youth because of a splint in his right front leg, drops off the list after being ranked second. Hansen, set for his next start in Saturday’s Gotham at Aqueduct, moves up to No. 2, with El Padrino moving in at No. 3 following Saturday’s victory in the $300,000 Risen Star at the Fair Grounds.

It was a weekend of ups and downs for trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey Javier Castellano.

Pletcher trains Algorithms, and his other entry in the Fountain of Youth, 4-5 favorite Discreet Dancer, finished a distant third. Castellano, meanwhile, gave up the ride aboard Union Rags to stay with Algorithms. On the plus side, Pletcher trains and Castellano rides El Padrino,

Union Rags breeder and owner Phyllis Wyeth was feeling confident in the winner’s circle at Gulfstream Park.

“We were just out for a practice run. Can you believe that one? And we didn’t want him to peak to soon,” she said.

As for comparisons to Barbaro, Matz says, “Barbaro was an undefeated horse and we had a lot of confidence in him, there was no doubt. If it wasn’t for maybe two feet he’d be undefeated, also,” said Matz, referring to Union Rags. “I think he’s a real good horse. He’s a got a real good disposition and I certainly don’t think there’s any problem with distance with him.”
