ST. LOUIS (AP) — Tony La Russa retired as manager of the on Monday, three days after winning a dramatic, seven-game World Series against the .

The 67-year-old La Russa announced his retirement at a at .

The World Series win over Texas was the third of La Russa’s 33-year career. The manager guided the Cardinals to the championship despite being 10 1/2 games behind Atlanta on Aug. 25 for the final in the National League.

La Russa retires third on the all-time wins list, 35 behind second-place John McGraw. In addition to this season, he won championships in Oakland in 1989 and St. Louis in 2006.

“Other than some of personal attachments, I feel good,” La Russa said. “I feel good that this is the .”

La Russa said there wasn’t a single factor that led to his decision, but he began having doubts about returning for 2012 midway through the season. In he told general manager John Mozeliak and other team officials.

La Russa said the timing of those discussions — about the time the Cardinals appeared to be out of before their miraculous run — was pure coincidence. He said he simply felt it was time to go, a feeling that didn’t change even as the Cardinals squeaked into the playoffs on the final day of the season, then upset the Phillies, Brewers and Rangers.

“I think this just feels like it’s time to end it,” La Russa said.

He spoke with little emotion at the news conference with one exception, when he paused to compose himself as he thanked his wife, Elaine, and two daughters for putting up without him over much of the past 33 years. But he did say his meeting with players after Sunday’s parade and celebration was short but emotional.

“Some grown men cried,” La Russa said, then he joked, “I kind of liked that because they made me cry a few times.”

Mozeliak said work is under way to find a new manager for the first time since La Russa was hired prior to the 1996 season. A search committee will be formed. Mozeliak did not speculate on how long the process might take.

La Russa answered flatly, “No,” when asked if he’ll ever manage again. He also said he had no plans to be a general manager, but said he is open to some sort of job in the future.

“Maybe open a book store,” he said.

NATO concludes Libya mission after seven months

89fc67b591b72f31fa0d4aa09d8a1fc0 NATO concludes Libya mission after seven months

() – NATO ends its in Libya at midnight on Monday, seven months after launching an air and sea campaign that helped bring the overthrow and death of .

In announcing the decision last week, NATO Secretary-General called it “one of the most successful” operations in the history of the 62-year-old alliance.

Rasmussen will mark the end of the mission by visiting Libya on Monday, where he will meet Libya’s National Transitional Council and members of civil society, the alliance said.

Despite Rasmussen’s depiction of the mission, the caused sharp rifts in the alliance and went on much longer than Western nations had expected or wanted.

NATO stuck to its decision to end the operation despite NTC calls for it to stay engaged longer and says it does not expect to play a major post-war role, although it could assist the transition to democracy by helping with security sector reform.

NATO took over the mission on March 31, based on a United Nations mandate that set a no-fly zone over Libya and permitted foreign military forces, including NATO, to use “all ” to protect Libyan civilians.

That mandate was terminated last Thursday, despite a request for the U.N. Security Council to wait for the NTC to decide if it wants NATO help to secure its borders.

have been keen to see a quick conclusion to a costly effort that has involved more than 26,000 air sorties and round-the-clock naval patrols at a time when budgets are under severe strain due to the global economic crisis.

But said members of the alliance are free to give further security aid to Libya individually.

The NTC officially announced Libya’s liberation on October 23, days after the capture and death of Gaddafi. NATO commanders have said they believe the is able to take care of the country’s security.

Libya has been the first in which the United States sought to step back from a leading role and prompted some sharp criticism from Washington of the capabilities of allies after they failed to secure the quick results hoped for.

The U.S. ambassador to NATO, Ivo Daalder, and the alliance’s top operations commander, U.S. Admiral James Stavridis, hailed the success of the mission on Monday in a commentary in the New York Times, but reiterated the need for allies to address the shortcomings in capabilities it revealed.

While calling it a “true alliance effort” in which non-U.S. allies flew 75 percent of the air missions, they said the United States played a leading role in destroying Libya’s air defense system and providing critical resources, including the vast majority of intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and the aerial refueling assets.

Fourteen NATO members and four other states provided naval and air forces, but only eight NATO nations took part in combat missions. Some big NATO states, notably Germany, had opposed the intervention.

Daalder and Stavridis said U.S. planes flew a quarter of all sorties over Libya, France and Britain a third of all missions — most of them strike operations — and the remaining participants flew roughly 40 percent.

(CNN) — Syria is due to respond Monday to an Arab League proposal for bringing more than seven months of violence to an end, Qatar’s prime minister said Sunday.

A meeting between Arab League diplomats and Sunday was “clear and frank,” Qatar’s Sheikh Hamad bin Jassim said, using diplomatic code for contentious meetings.

The proposals the Arab League presented are serious about ending violence, he said, according to the emirate’s official news agency.

Also on Monday, Syrians aiming to write a new constitution for the strife-torn country will meet for the first time, Syria’s state news agency reported Sunday after a weekend of intense violence.

al-Assad earlier this month announced the formation of a committee to draft a new constitution within four months, the (SANA) reported at the time. The October 15 announcement was one of several moves the government has made to defuse protests, but they have not calmed the situation in the country.

Seven people were reported killed Sunday across the country, according to the Local , an opposition group that organizes and documents protests.

Government forces killed six people they described as terrorists Saturday, and arrested 20, SANA reported Sunday. The agency said four members of the security forces were killed in the clashes.

, meanwhile, said at least 21 people were killed Saturday, including at least 11 who died when pounded the western city of Homs with tanks, sustaining fire with machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades.

More than 3,000 people have died since unrest broke out in Syria in mid-March, according to the United Nations.

CNN cannot independently confirm individual accounts of violence because Syria’s government restricts the activity of journalists.

Al-Assad, meanwhile, praised Russia’s support for his embattled government Sunday in his second interview with international news outlets in two days. Al-Assad told Russia’s Channel One television network that his government has been in “constant contact” with Moscow, a longtime ally, since the protests began.

He also thanked the Russians for vetoing a U.N. Security Council resolution in early October that would have condemned the Syrian response to the protests. China and Russia teamed up to kill the resolution, which had called for an immediate end to the clampdown.

“Russia is aware of the dangers of military or political intervention in the internal affairs of Syria,” al-Assad said. He said Syria expected the Russian government “will not only continue supporting Syria but also advocate world stability.”

The interview follows one published in Britain’s Sunday Telegraph, which billed it as al-Assad’s first with a Western journalist since the trouble started. Al-Assad told the newspaper that Western countries should not intervene in his country.

“Syria is the hub now in this region,” he said. “It is the fault line, and if you play with the ground you will cause an earthquake. … Do you want to see another Afghanistan, or tens of Afghanistans?

“Any problem in Syria will burn the whole region. If the plan is to divide Syria, that is to divide the whole region,” said al-Assad, the British newspaper reported.

While he admitted “many mistakes” had been made, the president also defended his security forces.

“We have very few police, only the army, who are trained to take on al-Qaeda,” al-Assad told the Sunday Telegraph. “If you sent in your army to the streets, the same thing would happen. Now, we are only fighting terrorists. That’s why the fighting is becoming much less.”

Saturday’s clashes erupted after Friday’s massive demonstration in Hama where Syrians demanded an end to al-Assad’s rule and called for his prosecution.

Demonstrators also called on the United Nations to impose a no-, naval blockade and other measures to protect Syrian protesters.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon condemned Friday’s killings. He said the deaths of more than 3,000 people killed since the start of the Syrian uprising amounts to an “alarming” toll.

Ban appealed for an end to military operations against civilians.

In New York City, a new record for October snowfall was set when 1.3in fell in Central Park. Only three other snowy October days have been recorded in the park in 135 years of record-keeping.

Most of the Occupy Wall Street protesters in New York’s Zuccotti Park saw out the storm.

Nick Lemmin, of Brooklyn, told AP he had “slept pretty well”, although fellow protester Adash Daniel headed off after three weeks in the park, saying: “I’m not much good to this movement if I’m shivering.”

On Sunday, passengers were stranded for more than seven hours on one JetBlue flight in Hartford, Connecticut.

On Saturday, flights were delayed at Newark airport in New Jersey, which was being lashed by heavy rains and winds.

Amtrak reported massive disruption to train services, including a 13-hour delay for passengers on one train in central Massachusetts.

John LaCorte, a National Weather Service meteorologist in Pennsylvania, told the agency that the last time the state saw a major storm so early was in 1972.

“This is very, very unusual. It has all the look and feel of a classic mid-winter nor’easter,” he said.

High pressure over south-eastern Canada had fed cold air south and into moisture from the North Carolina coast.

In New England it is usual for measurable snow to fall in early December.

NWS meteorologist Bill Simpson said temperatures could return to normal by the middle of next week.

“This doesn’t mean our winter is going to be terrible. You can’t get any correlation from a two-day event,” he said.

Figure out your date — quickly

c4448805c8282d5dbe7ad0a8c48aa01c Figure out your date — quickly

( News / .com) — Go ahead, your date all you want. But the fact is, you can find out even more about that special someone by sharing a few particularly telling date-night activities together. Certain activities, you see, bring out the best or worst in people — and contain hidden clues about how he or she will treat you. Suggest doing one of these things during your time together and you’ll have plenty of information!

Activity #1: Share a communal meal
Instead of choosing the standard dinner fare, take your date to a place that encourages — or better yet, requires — that you share what you order, whether that’s fondue, Korean barbecue, or tapas. Suddenly, the “I’ll order mine, you order yours” rule is out the window, so you’ll get the real scoop on how well he or she can compromise. When you suggest something exotic, does your date seem open to it or make a face while steering you toward something else on the menu? Once the food arrives, there’s more to learn. Those who get territorial about the they wanted or seem leery of infringing on “yours” or “your half” all suggest that the give-and-take that relationships require won’t come naturally, warns , Ph.D., author of DSI: Date Scene Investigation. The true keepers are those who will voluntarily dump the last morsel on your plate and won’t mind if you’ve double-dipped. (After all, if your date can’t handle sharing a little saliva over and , how is this person ever going to handle more , like kissing?)

Activity #2: Play a game
Want to know how your date plays the game of life? Pit yourself against your partner in pool, , , or stay home and have a battle on the or Kinect. As you’re playing, ask yourself: Is your date playful or serious about scoring? Does this person curse when losing or gloat when winning? “There’s nothing wrong with wanting to win, but you’ll learn a lot if your date has to win,” points out Sharyn Wolf, a Manhattan psychotherapist and the author of Guerilla Dating Tactics: Strategies, Tips and Secrets for Finding Romance. If your date’s got a serious competitive streak, you’d be fooling yourself to think it doesn’t carry over to other areas — like his or her love life. “These people will see arguments as win/lose propositions, too, and they won’t quit until they’ve won,” warns Kerner. If, however, your date cheers you on when you score a point, that’s a sign of a truly supportive partner, so take note.

Activity #3: Put on your dancing shoes
The next time you’re out, consider dragging your date onto the dance floor — and fear not, this isn’t about having a dance-off. In fact, seeing your date getting down isn’t even about the dancing; rather, it’s about his or her willingness to dance in the first place. “There’s nothing that makes a person more self-conscious than dancing — especially men,” says Wolf. “If your date dances, this shows that the person’s good at surrendering, at not being in complete control in front of others, and that he or she is less concerned about what others will think.” Which is all good information to have!

Activity #4: Take a stroll
Instead of sitting down for a movie or a cup of coffee, step outdoors for a walk through a park and see what happens. Can you two keep the conversation going away from music, food and people-watching? “It’s life without props,” points out Kerner. See how your date handles any lulls in the conversation. The longer this person can wait before filling in the silence, the more comfortable your date is in his or her own skin — and the lower the chances are that what you’re seeing is just a “front” this person has put up in order to impress you.

Activity #5: Go for a drive together
The next time your date offers to drive you somewhere, pay attention to how he or she reacts on the road. “Driving is very, very revealing,” says body language expert Patti Wood (pattiwood.net). “Years ago, I was on a first date with a man who’d turn left at yellow lights and took lots of risks on the road. That told me he was a person who would always live a little on the edge.” Other insights from Wood: lane-changers will probably always be on the lookout for someone better-looking, smarter or richer than you. Picky parkers who always want to go around one more time to see if they can snag a closer spot probably have problems with commitment. Herky-jerky drivers who accelerate and brake so quickly they leave your stomach queasy may have a poor sense of pacing in all areas of their lives. Plus, if you’re driving, see how he or she handles it; nagging that you should slow down, speed up, or otherwise do things differently is a sign this person probably won’t love you just the way you are (starting with your bad driving).

Short Men Dating Tips

8df38324dbe16f85323d1c3b7c60a2f0 Short Men Dating Tips

What You Need To Know
Working out is key, regardless of height.
A man who has a of his own style will attract women.
Projecting confidence is necessary for attracting the opposite sex.

“Shorter men have to work extra hard to impress the ladies.”

( News / AskMen.com) — In the words of Kermit the Frog, “It ain’t easy being green.” But if he was dating someone besides a pig, he might find that it ain’t easy being short either. Maybe it’s just a matter of biology, but there’s little doubt that many women prefer . Whether it’s accurate or just perception, taller men suggest power, strength, masculinity, and the ability to protect women.

Because of this, shorter men have to work extra hard to impress the ladies. And many of them do it with . For example, Pete Wentz, and may be slight, but they’re all adept at reeling in the ladies.

But it’s just the rich and famous men who can sidestep the height issue. , one of my girlfriends, we’ll call her , actually lowered her normal height requirement of at least 5’10 to go out with a guy who was 5’7. “His body was ripped,” she remembers. “When he wrapped his arms around me, I felt just as feminine as I would have with a taller guy.”

The ? Taller guys could take a cue from their shorter . If you’ve ever wondered why dream girl is talking to someone half your height, it’s time to get a clue. Just because you’re tall, doesn’t mean you can rest on your laurels. So what can taller men learn from the shorties? Read on and find out.

1. Dress to emphasize your frame
Shorter men know they have to make the most of what they’ve got. Bold prints and baggy clothing? That’s a no-go, unless you want to look like a Muppet. Likewise, clothes that are too small will make taller men look as though they’re going through a pubescent growth spurt. It’s shocking how often tall men will wear pants that are too short or jackets with sleeves that are too short. Sure, you may want to go the lazy route and just pick up something off the rack and not worry about tailoring, but you’ll suffer for it. Women will definitely notice your ill-fitting clothing and run the other way.

Short and athletic is significantly more attractive than tall and overweight.”

2. Hit the Gym
Shorter men also know they can’t allow themselves to get out of shape lest they want to look like Humpty Dumpty or George Costanza. A shorter guy I once dated told me, “When the deck is stacked against you, you’ve gotta work extra hard to bring your ‘A’ game to the table.”

The result? His extra-rock-hard body. Taller men, on the other hand, sometimes think they can get away with extra weight since they have a larger frame. But short and athletic is significantly more attractive than tall and overweight. You don’t need to get pumped like a juicehead — just be fit.

3. Have a sense of style
Shorty Pete Wentz might be a mere 5’6″, but that doesn’t stop him from dressing with style. Sure, sporting tight jeans and eyeliner may not be your thing, but you can easily rock your own look. Don’t allow your height to dictate your style or lack thereof.

Taller guys, take a cue! Just because you’re tall doesn’t mean you can afford the luxury of wearing whatever you found on sale at the bargain bin at Walmart.

Having a strong sense of style screams confidence, and that is always hot. I once met a similarly dressed guy, who I’ll call Sam, when I was out and about one night. His long hair, tight black jeans and copious amounts of jewelry gave him the appearance of being either a) in a band or b) a skateboarder or c) a shorter version of Criss Angel. In other words, right up my alley. The fact that he was only 5’6″ didn’t really bother me.

Needless to say, not every woman is going to find that look attractive, but the point is Sam wasn’t afraid to stand out and rock his own look regardless of his height. It suggested that he was comfortable in his own skin, but, in general, being well-dressed is always sexy.

4. Remain confident
As always, confidence is key. Just look at Napoleon. Self-assurance is a bigger turn-on than height hands down. A taller guy who has a total lack of self-esteem is never going to bring in the ladies the way a shorter guy who is confident can.

In high school, one of my male classmates was all of 5’3″. But he acted like he was 6’3″. He brimmed with more confidence than many guys who were taller than him. He was a star athlete and dated as many homecoming queens and cheerleaders as his taller counterparts. If you believe you’re the shiz, other people will, too.

Tall guys, take note. Yes, you’ve got height on your side, but there’s a lot more to meeting women than that. Many taller men think their height is all they need to be attractive to women, but take a gander next time you’re out at a bar, and you’ll notice plenty of good-looking women with shorter men. Why? Because while you were resting on your laurels, the shorter guy was working his magic.

Dressing Slutty on Halloween Will Help You Find Love

5a041bbe1d6e5759e2e6cd13570c0b0c Dressing Slutty on Halloween Will Help You Find Love

( News / The Stir) — Let’s be honest: For a lot of women, Halloween is a great excuse to let loose and dress up in a way that that makes them feel … well, hot. No one really wants to be the ghoulish, freaky Bride of Frankenstein. You want to be SEXY! It’s why the of a “Halloween slut” — someone who uses the holiday as an excuse to wear something a little, or a lot, more risque than usual — exists. In fact, I’d bet more of us are Halloween sluts than we would readily admit! And there’s nothing wrong with that. Especially if you’re single and ready to mingle!

A survey from the Zoosk.com found that 66 percent of single felt Halloween is a good time to meet a . And 71 percent of men said they would likely be interested in someone wearing a sexy costume, whereas 51 percent of women said they would be into a guy in a funny outfit. Well, uh, yeah!

Of course this finding reflects annoying social stereotypes (women should be sexy, men should be ), but getting into the spirit of it is more fun than getting irritated! I’m not talking about going all out . But donning a sexy costume as a single gal — or even as a way to wink-wink your significant other — can definitely make for a good time …

I actually have my very own “sexy costume” success story. Back when I was in my early 20s, single, and living in Manhattan, I dressed up as a cute/sexy “cat” for Halloween. In other words, I was a girl in the go-to fishnets, knee-high black boots, black flirty skirt with top, plus whiskers, tail, and cat ears. Meow. The outfit scored me some really — while walking near the Halloween parade downtown, some total creep came out of nowhere and yanked my tail! — but it also helped me catch the eye of a cute and funny mummy at a party I attended with some friends (dressed as sexy witches). And believe it or not, although he was initially attracted to me thanks to my sexy cat look, he didn’t only want to hook up! He actually wanted my number for a legitimate date … which we went on the following week. He turned out to be a really nice guy!

Hence why it’s not necessarily the worst thing in the world to give in to your skanky side and rock that sexy cop/devil/nurse/nun costume you’re itching to try. It might just lead you to a shot at love. And if you’re taken, it couldn’t hurt to raise your honey’s eyebrows, eh?

Economists: Europe crisis to cloud U.S. economy in 2012

( News / ) — Most economists surveyed by USA TODAY say the European will remain a threat to the next year and will hurt U.S. economic growth despite last week’s deal aimed at averting a meltdown.

Still, many of the 43 economists polled Oct. 25-27 see less risk of a new U.S. recession, though they expect only modest growth next year.

Sixty-one percent say Europe’s will continue to weigh on the global economy despite last week’s agreement by the continent’s leaders to cut in half what Greece owes private lenders, bolster the eurozone’s fund and require banks to boost their capital.

Bernard Baumohl, chief of the Group, says the plan is woefully short on details, and there’s no guarantee investors will buy government bonds to reduce the borrowing costs of financially troubled nations such as Italy and Spain.

Like a majority of those surveyed, Baumohl expects the debt crisis to trigger a recession in Europe that will affect the U.S. economy. He predicts Europe’s problems could shave up to a off economic growth here next year. Although U.S. exports to Europe make up a of the overall economy, large U.S. banks hold a significant amount of European debt.

The uncertainty, he says, “will impact the confidence of business leaders and consumers,” dampening business investment and hiring.

Others have more faith in last week’s deal and forecast a firming, if less-than-robust, recovery. Overall, the economists say the annual rate of growth will average 2.4% a quarter next year while companies add about 137,000 jobs monthly, up from an average 119,000 the past nine months.

The economy must grow by more than 3% and payrolls must expand by more than 150,000 a month to noticeably lower the unemployment rate, now 9.1%.

Hugh Johnson, head of Hugh Johnson Advisors, says he was heartened by a government report last week that showed better-than-expected consumer spending and business investment. “The numbers have gotten better,” he says.

Dean Maki, chief U.S. economist at Barclays Capital, says lower oil prices and the recent end to Japanese supply disruptions stemming from the March earthquake have lifted impediments to consumer spending and business investment.

Other headwinds remain. Consumers are saving less to pay for increased spending — that’s unsustainable, Baumohl says. Federal budget cuts will further crimp economic growth next year.

() – The New York Fed suspended MF (MF.N) Global from conducting new business with the central bank on Monday and its shares were suspended, as the troubled brokerage nears a deal on its future.

As per a tentative plan, MF Global’s holding company would file for and derivatives trader Interactive Brokers would buy the assets, the and the Financial Times reported.

“The Federal Reserve Bank of New York has informed . that it has been suspended from conducting new business with the New York Fed,” the Fed said.

“This suspension will continue until MF Global establishes, to the satisfaction of the New York Fed, that MF Global is fully capable of discharging the responsibilities set out in the New York Fed’s policy.”

MF Global, run by former (GS.N) Chief Executive Jon Corzine, has been struggling over the past week in which it posted a , its shares fell by two-thirds and its credit ratings were cut to junk.

Its shares were suspended before trading opened in New York, pending a statement.

Interactive Brokers would likely make an initial bid of about $1 billion during a court supervised auction for the U.S. futures brokerage, the said.

MF in London said the company wasn’t taking on new business and they were closing out positions.

“It was quite difficult to get our money out on Friday, because they had a lot of redemption calls,” a trader, whose firm used MF Global as a brokerage said.

“The company is not initiating any new position. They are trying to close down positions that they already have with clients that are open,” the trader said.

The company is suffering because of low interest rates and bets it made on European , making it possibly the most prominent U.S. casualty yet from the eurozone .

MF Global was in talks on Sunday with possible buyers, aiming “squarely” to do a deal, though all options remained on the table as the firm hired restructuring and bankruptcy advisers, sources familiar with the situation told Reuters.

The New York Times reported in its electronic edition that by Sunday evening, the talks had narrowed to one bidder, Interactive Brokers.

Sullivan & Cromwell’s restructuring and mergers teams have joined the long roster of those advising MF Global, one source familiar with the situation said.

Weil, Gotshal & Manges was also hired to prepare potential restructuring options, a second source familiar with the situation said. The sources could not be identified by name because the talks were not public.

Weil would focus on MF Global’s UK subsidiary if it needed to pursue a formal restructuring overseas, the Journal reported in its electronic edition.

The securities company also has hired firms Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom, the newspaper said.

MF Global and Interactive Brokers declined to comment. The law firms could not be reached immediately for comment.

A number of interested parties were considering several possible deals, including buying all or parts of MF Global, said the source, who requested anonymity.

“The goal is squarely for some sort of M&A transaction,” the source said, adding the situation was “fluid.”

QUARTERLY LOSS

Corzine, who became CEO in March last year after a term as New Jersey’s governor, has been trying to transform MF Global from a brokerage that mainly places customers’ trades on exchanges into an investment bank that bets with its own capital.

The plunge last week in MF Global’s corporate bonds to distressed levels, and in its shares to below $1 at one point on Friday, makes it all the more urgent for the company to come up with some sort of solution before markets open on Monday.

MF Global has given potential buyers limited information about its financials and has not set up a data room for bidders to conduct due diligence, a buy side source earlier said.

The source, who is looking into deals both for the whole company and for its parts, said he was skeptical about the possibility of MF Global striking a deal over this weekend.

The company’s positions are big and hard to value, especially the firm’s sovereign risk exposure, the source said.

“How do you put a price on that? How do you get a deal done when the right side of the balance sheet keeps moving so dramatically?” the source said.

The company hired boutique investment bank Evercore Partners Inc (EVR.N) to help find a buyer, separate sources said this past week.
