Track Talk – Spills, Thrills, and Investigations

b733ef34802012c673b61296e64816be Track Talk – Spills, Thrills, and Investigations

(PhatzRadio – Staff Writer PAL) This weekend we saw some great races and some very frightening accidents. Ramon Dominguez wasn’t riding on Saturday after a spill he took Friday. Mr. Dominquez was riding Ms Stilleto. It appears that Ms Stilleto clipped heels with Starjetta on the backstretch; she then stumbled and unseated her rider. His neck was a little stiff, but otherwise, he should be fine. Irad Oritz Jr. is in stable condition after a spill on Saturday. He was riding Freud’s Debut in the 10th race at Belmont, when the horse stumbled and fell shortly after the start of the race. Mr. Ortiz was taken to the hospital after the fall. He can move all of his body parts, and has a concussion; an MRI was scheduled for Sunday. The horse appears to be fine. Both of these accidents occurred on the Widener Turf Course. On Thursday night, there was an accident on Mohawk Raceway. In the 10th race, If I Didn’t Care driven by Jody Jamieson was coming up the stretch and fell. Most of the group of horses and drivers were able to avoid Jamieson. Mark MacDonald was unable to avoid Jamieson and was thrown from his sulkie. Mr. MacDonald suffered several broken bones, his nose, and jaw is broken, along with a dislocated right shoulder. It may be several months before Mr. MacDonald can drive. I believe the horses are fine. We offer our sincere hope that everyone recovers as soon as possible. This is a dangerous sport. I hope everyone realizes the risk jockeys and drivers take every day.

From Bloodhorse.com a hearing is scheduled today regarding allegations against trainer Rick Dutrow. Mr. Dutrow was suspended for a urine sample containing Class 3 medication Butiophanol in his horse, Fastus Cactus. Fastus Cactus finished first in a race last November at Aqueduct Racetrack. A second suspension was issued when hypodermic needles were found in Mr. Dutrow’s barn. The two infractions together, carry a 90 day suspension.

The State Racing and Wagering Board has expanded the potential punishment to include revocation of Mr. Dutrow’s license for what they claim is a pattern of violations over the years. Kentucky racing officials had denied Mr. Dutrow a license this year (see Amen Hallujah). Legal papers that were filed this month claimed Mr. Dutrow was not in the barn when the syringes were found. They also claimed Mr. Dutrow was not in the state when Factus Cactus tested positive. Mr. Dutrow also offered to take a polygraph; the stewards would not accept the offer. Unfortunately, since Mr. Dutrow is the trainer of Factus Cactus, and since the syringes were allegedly found in his barn, he is going to be held accountable. If one of his employees did something wrong, some disciplinary actions should have been taken. When the horse tested positive, did Mr. Dutrow hold his own investigation? Mr. Edward Martin, president of the Racing Commissioners International and former executive director of the New York Racing Board, wrote to the New York regulators, citing a history of problems, noting that Mr. Dutrow had been sanctioned more than 64 times since 1974.

Why don’t we move into the 21st century? Every mom and pop store has cameras. Why aren’t there cameras in the barns? has cameras in Uncle Mo’s stall. Cameras don’t have to be in every stall but placing them in the barn seems reasonable. I don’t see any problem asking owners to pick up some portion of the cost of installing cameras since they pay for everything else.

Barry Irwin increased the security around the barn in Keeneland when Animal Kingdom was preparing to run in the Preakness. His comments implied he was concerned about someone trying to get to Animal Kingdom and have him test positive. Mr. Irwin’s comments may have been brash, but I give him credit for speaking up about issues that some people would rather not talk about. Every industry has people that will do anything for money. Why should be any different? These animals are worth a lot of money; yes, even the cheap claimers. Putting cameras in place would be an excellent deterrent to anyone considering doing something questionable.

So does the penalty fit the crime? I am glad I don’t have to make such a decision that will so dramatically effect someone’s livelihood. Tune in Tuesdays and Fridays at 4PM EDT on www.phatzradio.com for the show.

Afghan leader warns NATO not to become “occupying force”

bd4fcb571fdd4057925ff5ca140d69a5 Afghan leader warns NATO not to become occupying force

() – warned NATO-led forces in Afghanistan on Tuesday they were at risk of being seen as an occupying force rather than an after a of , and said he would take unspecified “action” if they continue.

Raids on Afghan homes in pursuit of insurgents were “not allowed,” and the patience of the Afghan people with the tactic had run out, Karzai said, underlining the challenge of winning popular support for an increasingly violent war.

“We see NATO from the point of view of an ally … If they don’t stop air strikes on Afghan homes, their presence in Afghanistan will be considered as an occupying force and against the will of the Afghan people,” he told reporters.

The fiery speech also underlined Karzai’s desire to forge an image as champion of Afghanistan and distance himself from the Western troops who have spent nearly a decade fighting the Taliban, as resentment against the foreign presence grows.

Karzai’s in Afghanistan after the fall of the Taliban was due in no small part to Western support, something which his critics have not forgotten.

The NATO-led Force () said General David Petraeus, the commander of foreign forces in Afghanistan, understood that a “liberation force” could be seen over time as an occupation force because of incidents such as civilian casualties.

“We are in agreement with President Karzai on the importance of constantly examining our actions in light of that reality,” Vic Beck, director of ISAF public affairs, said in a statement.

Karzai sharply condemned NATO air strikes which inadvertently killed at least nine people — most of them small children — in southern Helmand on Sunday.[ID:nL3E7GT041]. The strikes were ordered after a patrol had come under fire.

Civilian casualties caused by foreign troops have long been a major source of friction between Karzai and his Western . Karzai warned the tactics were a violation of Afghanistan’s sovereignty.

“They must stop bombarding Afghan homes … If they do not, the Afghan government will be forced to take unilateral action,” Karzai said, declining to go into detail about what his government would do if the tactics were not stopped.

U.N. figures show at least three-quarters of civilian casualties are caused by insurgents.

KARZAI’S OPTIONS LIMITED

Holding up one finger, Karzai said he had warned NATO commanders “a hundred times,” and hoped to meet them again this week to reinforce that message.

But with an army and police still not strong enough to fight the battle-hardened Taliban on their own, it was unclear how Karzai hoped to persuade NATO to give up a tactic they say has brought crucial gains against the insurgents.

“If more civilian deaths happen, maybe Karzai will actually do something, such as stopping Afghan forces from participating in joint operations,” said Waheed Mujhda, political analyst at the Afghan Analytical and Advisory Center in Kabul.

“But this is dangerous. Afghanistan is in crisis and the Afghan forces do not have the capacity to run things on their own,” Mujhda told Reuters.

NATO is racing against the clock to train Afghanistan’s police and army before handing over all security responsibilities to the Afghans by the end of 2014. That process begins with several areas in July.

CHILDREN KILLED

Tension boiled over at the weekend after the strikes on a compound in Helmand’s Nawzad district. Graphic television footage after the strikes showed grieving relatives cradling the bodies of several children, including babies.

The commander of ISAF troops in the region apologized for the deaths, saying the strikes on the compound had been ordered because insurgents were using them as a base.

U.S. and NATO commanders have stepped up the use of air strikes and night raids in the past 12 months, arguing they are effective weapons against insurgents who often hide among the Afghan population.

However commanders have significantly tightened the rules for using both tactics over the past two years amid a growing outcry from Afghan leaders. Beck said this had helped reduce the number of civilian casualties caused by ISAF and that Petraeus had issued new guidance to troops two weeks ago.

“General Petraeus emphasized the importance of doing everything within our power to reduce the number of civilian casualties,” Beck said.

Libya’s Gaddafi: I will not leave my country

b045f9c190b0f028b60817440416a832 Libyas Gaddafi: I will not leave my country

(Reuters) – is emphatic he will not leave Libya, Jacob Zuma said on Tuesday after talks with the that left prospects for a negotiated end to the conflict looking dim.

But new questions emerged over how long Gaddafi could hold on after a senior United Nations aid official said shortages of food and medicine in areas of Libya controlled by Gaddafi amounted to a “.”

Within hours of Zuma’s departure from late on Monday, Libyan television reported that NATO aircraft had resumed attacks, striking what it called civilian and military sites in and Tajoura, just east of the capital.

Zuma was in Tripoli to try to revive an African “roadmap” for ending the conflict, which started in February with an uprising against Gaddafi and has since turned into a war with thousands of people killed.

The talks produced no breakthrough, with Gaddafi’s refusal to quit — a condition the rebels and NATO have set as a pre-condition for any — still the sticking point.

“Col. Gaddafi called for an end to the bombings to enable a Libyan dialogue,” Zuma’s office said in a statement. “He emphasized that he was not prepared to leave his country, despite the difficulties.”

Zuma also said Gaddafi’s personal safety “is a concern” — a reference to NATO strikes which have repeatedly hit the Libyan leader’s Bab al- compound and other locations used by the Libyan leader and his family.

Speaking in the main rebel stronghold of Benghazi where he was opening a consulate, Minister said he had pledged an aid package for the rebels of millions of euros.

“I think the Gaddafi regime is over and I firmly believe that it is over for a simple reason: we are talking about a person whose closest friends are defecting. He lost his legitimacy in Libya,” Frattini said.

Now in its fourth month, Libya’s conflict is deadlocked on the ground, with anti-Gaddafi rebels unable to break out of their strongholds and advance toward Tripoli, where Gaddafi appears to be firmly entrenched.

Rebels control the east of Libya around the city of Benghazi, Libya’s third-biggest city Misrata, and a mountain range stretching from the town of Zintan, 150 km (95 miles) south of Tripoli, toward the border with Tunisia.

TIME BOMB

Western powers have said they expect Gaddafi will be forced out by a process of attrition as air strikes, defections from his entourage and shortages take their toll.

Panos Moumtzis, the U.N. humanitarian coordinator for Libya, told Reuters in Tripoli that some food stocks in areas under Gaddafi’s control were likely to last only weeks.

“I don’t think there’s any famine, malnutrition. But the longer the conflict lasts the more the food stocks supplies are going to be depleted, and it’s a matter of weeks before the country reaches a critical situation,” Moumtzis said in an interview.

“The food and the medical supplies is a little bit like a time bomb. At the moment it’s under control and it’s ok. But if this goes on for quite some time, this will become a major issue,” he said.

Gaddafi says his forces are fighting armed criminal gangs and al Qaeda militants, and has described the NATO intervention as an act of colonial aggression aimed at grabbing Libya’s plentiful oil reserves.

Libyan television broadcast footage of Gaddafi welcoming Zuma, his first public appearance since May 11. Speculation had been swirling in the past few weeks that Gaddafi was injured in a NATO strike or had fled Tripoli.

MISRATA FIGHTING

A Reuters photographer in Misrata said there was heavy fighting in the suburb of Dafniyah, in the west of the city, where the front line is now located after rebel fighters drove pro-Gaddafi forces out of the city.

Speaking from a field hospital near the front line, she said 14 rebel fighters had been injured so far on Tuesday, one of them seriously.

“Gaddafi’s forces are firing Grad rockets,” she said. “The rebels tried to advance, and Gaddafi’s forces pushed back.”

Rebel fighters, out of their familiar urban battleground and now in open ground, were being outgunned, one of their spokesmen said.

“The situation is getting more difficult for the revolutionaries because fighting is going on in open places. They do not have the same heavy weapons as the (pro-Gaddafi) brigades,” the spokesman, Abdelsalam, said from Misrata.

There were reports too of clashes between rebels and forces loyal to Gaddafi in the Western mountains.

A rebel spokesman in the town of Zintan told Reuters by telephone: “Fighting took place last night in (the village of) Rayayna, east of Zintan … It continued until the early hours of this morning. Both sides used mortars.”

“The revolutionaries do not want to intensify attacks in the area for fear of harming civilians still living there,” said the spokesman, called Abdulrahman.

He urged NATO to take a more active role by targeting pro-Gaddafi forces from the air.

Using a makeshift system of citizens’ band radios and Skype, local rebels have been passing on the positions of government forces to NATO via the rebel headquarters in Benghazi, eastern Libya.

“NATO’s performance is still very weak. Its operations are very slow despite the fact that the local (rebel) military council has provided it with all necessary information about the brigades’ positions,” said Abdulrahman.

Serbia judges reject Ratko Mladic extradition appeal

fda516181a2885467c6af189e0bdf598 Serbia judges reject Ratko Mladic extradition appeal

( Blog/ BBC News) – Serbia’s has rejected Ratko Mladic’s appeal against his transfer to the UN tribunal in The Hague to face .

The Belgrade court took just hours to make its decision after receiving the appeal papers on .

Gen Mladic’s lawyer posted the appeal on Monday, saying the former commander needed medical attention and was too ill to face trial.

Doctors who examined him on Friday said he was fit enough to be extradited.

The 69-year-old was seized last Thursday in Lazarevo village, north of Belgrade, having been on the run for 1.

Gen Mladic is accused of committed during the Bosnian war, including the 1995 Srebrenica massacre of 7,500 and boys.

Delaying tactic?

Now the appeal has been rejected, Serbia’s deputy Bruno Vekaric said Gen Mladic would be sent to the UN war crimes tribunal for the (ICTY) in The Hague “as soon as possible”.

The extradition order must first be signed by Serbia’s justice minister, who will hold a news conference later on Tuesday, prompting speculation Gen Mladic could be put on a flight to The Hague later in the day, says the BBC’s Mark Lowen in Belgrade.

Omarska concentration camp victim Kamal Pervanic: “My guards were my former teachers”

From there, he is expected to be flown by helicopter to the ICTY detention unit in the city’s Scheveningen neighbourhood.

Once he has arrived at the tribunal, there will be an initial hearing before preparations begin for his trial on genocide and other charges.

Despite a decision by a Belgrade court that Gen Mladic was fit enough to be handed over to the UN court, Milos Saljic said earlier he would request another independent medical examination, saying his client’s health had deteriorated since his arrest.

Serbian court officials had earlier dismissed the claim of ill health as a delaying tactic, dismissing as unfounded media reports that Gen Mladic had hearing difficulties and that his right arm was paralysed – possibly as a result of a stroke.

Candle and flowers

Earlier on Tuesday Gen Mladic had been allowed to visit the grave of his daughter Ana, albeit under heavy security.

Ana Mladic committed suicide in 1994 aged 23, reportedly shooting herself with her father’s favourite pistol after she read about his alleged crimes in a magazine.

During the 20-minute visit to her grave, Gen Mladic lit a candle and he left a small white bouquet of flowers with a red rose in the middle, said Serbia’s deputy war crimes prosecutor, Bruno Vekaric.

Gen Mladic’s arrest is considered crucial to Serbia’s bid to join the European Union.

Darko Mladic has said his father had told him he was not responsible for the killings in Srebrenica, committed after his troops overran the town in July 1995.

Following the arrest of Radovan Karadzic in 2008, Gen Mladic became the most prominent Bosnian war crimes suspect still at large.

He was indicted by the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague in 1995 for genocide over Srebrenica – the worst single atrocity in Europe since World War II – and other alleged crimes.

Having lived freely in the Serbian capital, Belgrade, he disappeared after the arrest of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic in 2001.

On Sunday, thousands of people rallied in Belgrade against his arrest, hailing the general as a Serbian national hero and decrying the pro-Western government of President Boris Tadic for arresting him.

About 100 people were arrested during clashes with police.

The government will hope Gen Mladic’s departure will quell any further demonstrations by his supporters, adds our correspondent.

AD Sports Land – NBA Conference Finals

f96229a788cdce82651df5a8727b9e1a AD Sports Land – NBA Conference Finals

(PhatzRadio – Staff Writer AD) As we make our way through the NBA Playoffs, we have some thrills and chills, shocks and surprises, satisfaction and disappointments. Another season comes to its final phase. So let me wrap up the conference finals round up as we get ready for the start of the NBA Championship Finals.

Miami Heat defeats the 1 seeded Chicago Bulls in 5?!

WOW. I would have never thought this series would have ended in Chicago, in 5, and the Heat were on the winning end of it. But when your offense is as dull as a butter knife, its not surprising that the steak is hard to cut. The Heat’s defense and Lebron taking over late is what won them the series. You can’t forget Derrick Rose looking human; missing shots that he should have hit throughout all 5 games. He had a 35% field goal percentage, and shot 7-30 from three. That’s 23% from three point land… pretty terrible if you ask me. You know its going to be tough when you think to yourself, “maybe a shot clock violation is better than another miss”.

averaged 25.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 6.6 assists/game. , who had one 34 point performance and one 30 point performance, averaged 23.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Derrick Rose still has much to learn before making to the , remember he’s only 22 years old, this team will be great in the years to come.

Eliminate The Oklahoma City Thunder, 4-1.

One of the youngest teams have been eliminated but its not much of a surprise with Dirk being so… well amazing. It seems like no one can guard this guy, from Serge Ibaka to Nick Collison then to Kendrick Perkins. Dirk must be one of the hardest players to guard in the game. It didn’t help having Russell Westbrook produce a sub-par series performance and Kevin Durant, at times, playing somewhat soft. But remember the Thunder is a young team and with this experience under their belts, the future looks bright for them.

For the present, the Mavs were obviously the better team, coming back from as much as a 15 point deficit. Their strategy was to lead the game, only when they had to, specifically at the end of the game. They closed out every game beautifully. Dirk could not be stopped nor denied, he averaged 32.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. He was 59-61 from the free throw line, which is ridiculously good.

THE FINALS!

Miami Heat vs. The Dallas Mavericks

  • 2006 all over again?
  • Dirk brings a title to Dallas?
  • Jason Kidd finally wins a title?
  • all these questions will start being answered on Tuesday, May 31st,2011

It’s great because not only do we get exercise but you can’t help but smile a lot when you think about the fact that you’re a grown person playing kickball. The subject of bills or chores never comes up out on the field. We’re just out there running around like two big kids, having a ball together.”
—Lisa Johnstone, 35, Detroit

Team up on your to-do list: “Right after we put the kids to bed, we talk and laugh while doing household chores such as folding laundry. I cherish these moments, even though we’re sorting clothes and matching socks. My husband is my best friend, so any chance we can find to sit alone and chat is a special time for us.”
—Kellie Lawrence, 38, Reynoldsburg, OH

Kick back with a flick: “We have a standing date where we reconnect during the Sci Fi Channel’s cheesy Saturday-evening movie. We plop down on the couch and share the events of the day. The movie might just be background fodder, or it might be a trigger to take our conversation off on a tangent. During one movie about giant ice spiders, my boyfriend made a comment that sparked a hilarious conversation about our favorite movie one-liners. It was so much fun!”
—Wendy Manning, 36, Denver

Make time for pillow talk: “Bedtime is when we come together. We talk in bed, then we snuggle up, hold hands, and pray aloud. Praying together brings us closer and gives us a glimpse into what’s on each other’s minds.”
—Jill Hart, 31, Omaha, NE

Rock out: “Every weekend my husband and I play the 1980s version of Guitar Hero on our PlayStation. We’re addicted to it! Watching him rock out to Queen always makes me laugh.”
—Angela Wonson, 36, Tampa, FL

Have tea for two: “After dinner, my husband and I share a pot of tea. It’s a calming way to get reacquainted after our long days. Whenever he has the day off and the kids are in school, we’ll go to breakfast too, and just sit and talk to each other as if we’re on a date. It’s sweet and it always brings us closer.”
— Andrea Swangler, 40, Chesterfield, NJ

Soak up the love: “My husband and I both work from home, so relaxed couple time is in short supply. To get away from all of our day-to-day tasks, we take ‘breaks’ in our hot tub. Even if we’re soaking in silence, we can hold hands and be together in a lovely way that has nothing to do with being productive.”

Dating 101 for midlife women

( Blog/ Match.com) – For every woman in her twenties and thirties who’s looking for a ring and the man with whom she can settle down, there’s a boomer woman who’s been there, done that and looks at the men her age, asking: “Now what?”

Dating changes when you and your dates are older. But it’s confusing when expectations change and you’re still playing by the old rules. Don’t you think it’s time to wise up to the new ones that might impact your dating hopes and dreams? Yes, of course, have baggage. Any well-lived life does. Hopefully, though, it’s the carry-on kind rather than steamer trunks full of troublesome exes, meddlesome kids and irksome habits from a couple of spent increasingly getting stuck in your own ways.

Boomer baggage aside, how can you ascertain and match your dating with those of the single men your age? Start by learning these five secrets aimed at helping you better understand the dating pool of single boomer men.

Secret #1: Online dating is scary and new for boomer men, too
Online dating is like learning a new language, and learning a language is harder at 50 than at 20. “If you’re feeling a little unsure about dating online, keep in mind that the men in your demographic who are on the market, so to speak, may be ,” says Kimberly Neumann, author of The Real Reasons Men Commit and founder of DatingDivaDaily.com. “The cyber world is new dating territory for many boomers, so instead of overwhelming potential matches with a of qualities you’re seeking, try to focus on what you think might be fun to do on a date or perhaps mention activities you’d like to explore with a . It’ll make you seem more accessible and less intimidating.”

Secret #2: Single boomer men might be clueless about how to find you
As the dating has changed significantly since your earlier dating years, boomer women need to get more active and put themselves out there. You can’t wait around for men to find you. Find them. In fact, every boomer woman who’s single and looking should get a letter like this: “Dear former Cinderella, stop waiting with one shoe in your hand. Prince Charming no longer makes house calls. At this stage of life, don’t wait for an invitation to the dance. Log onto your computer. Check out the prince’s online dating profile and ask him out. Do it soon. Love, Fairy Godmother.”

“If you want to be an Olympic swimmer, you have to jump in the pool,” says dating coach Evan Marc Katz, author of the eBook, Why He Disappeared. “In an ever-changing world, there’s one thing you know for sure about online dating: these men are single and looking.” Don’t be afraid to contact them.

Secret #3: At this stage, boomers have more to lose (and therefore, more to be cautious about)
Of the three levels that most relationships cycle through — lust, romance, and attachment — attachment is the hardest one for boomers. In many ways, meeting a boomer man is the easy part. The hard part is what happens next, and here’s why: When you’re younger and neither of you has acquired as much in terms of life baggage — friends, family, financial assets — it’s easier, in some ways, to merge your lives together. Nowadays, though, your midlife date might be afraid of getting involved with someone new, merging two households and their finances, and managing the needs of any attached children.

“Your vital life structure is in play and you have something to defend and protect,” says relationship expert Dr. Philip Belove of datingatmidlife.com. “Home, life savings, and established social networks can all be obstacles to [forming] an attachment.” Don’t let those common issues be the elephant in the room; address them instead. Get comfortable with discussing the very real and normal midlife entrenchments that naturally factor into building any new romantic relationship with another person.

Secret #4: Boomer men might be less resilient than you think
The truth is that age is no guarantee of maturity, acceptance, or resilience. “Like you, boomer men have been through lots of ups and downs,” says Dr. Gilda Carle, author of Don’t Bet on the Prince (www.DrGilda.com). “Unlike you, boomer men are not as resilient to life’s vicissitudes. Boomer men appreciate a woman who can make them feel better than they felt when the two of you met!”

Remember that perfect man you heard about when you were younger, the one who is equal parts successful, strong alpha warrior and sensitive, enlightened poet? He’s a myth. So if you were trained to wait for the perfect prince, reset your expectations. Smart boomer women know that there’s a big difference between a chipped diamond and a lost cause. You might be surprised at what you find if you exhibit compassion and understanding as you search for a slightly-used-but-still-wonderful prince.

Secret #5: Boomer might have different dating goals
Have you considered the possibility that boomer men might not share your goals when it comes to dating? For example, what if your boomer man wants to move things much faster than you do?

In traditional dating, sometimes it’s younger women who want to speed the dating train along. They have a biological clock to consider and might have fewer wild oats to sow than men. But this timetable inevitably shifts in midlife. Suddenly, the traditional track is a moot point. If you were going to have kids, you had them, and they’re somewhere between diapers and moving out of the house.

For women who are discovering singlehood for the first time in midlife, living solo can feel liberating. Freed from the constraints of raising children, managing careers and taking care of everyone and everything, boomer women might find themselves freer to guide the form and velocity of a developing romantic relationship.

For example, you might want a man around just for occasional companionship. Forget about the traditional merging of lives society expected of you in your youth. But your boomer man’s independence might be tempered by his greater needs for forming a connection with someone and caretaking. It’s a mistake to assume you automatically know what a boomer man wants. Make sure you’re focused instead on identifying any love-life goals — both yours and his — before getting too involved.
