Heartfelt tributes decorate graves

361cf4271178949c39e74d660c1f368f

Small stones and perishables such as flowers, are not removed from grave sites, but mementos are collected. STORY HIGHLIGHTS * Most fallen soldiers of current wars are buried in Section 60 * People leave personal mementos, including cans of beer and hot sauce * Army making effort to ensure the mementos don't end up in trash RELATED TOPICS * Memorial Day * Arlington National Cemetery Arlington, Virginia (CNN) -- It may surprise the casual visitor at Arlington National Cemetery to see a rubber duck on a headstone or an old football helmet lying in the manicured grass of a fallen soldier's grave. After all, America's most hallowed ground is the final resting place for war heroes, astronauts, even a U.S. president. But it happens all the time, especially in Section 60, where many of those killed in the current wars are buried. Leaving a flower arrangement is still common. And many graves have tiny American flags placed on them. But this new generation of warriors are frequently remembered with mementos like cans of beer, teddy bears and even tiny bottles of hot sauce. The message in the mementos is unknown but likely very personal. "I have seen everything from report cards to an Alabama football ticket stub," said Roderick Gainer, a curator with the Center of Military History. "Obviously, the deceased service person was a Crimson Tide fan. Letters, hotel keys. I've seen jewelry, lots of things." Gainer is part of a new effort by the Army to make sure these items don't end up in the trash. For the first time the Army, which runs Arlington National Cemetery, is collecting many of the items left on the graves, cataloging them according to what grave they were left on and storing them for posterity. Before this effort began late last summer, most of the items were thrown away. Some cemetery employees tried to gather some special mementos, but no record was kept about what graves those items came from. Now, curators from the Center of Military History are making sure a thorough record is kept. "We are going by, grave to grave, on a weekly basis recovering items that have been left and then we basically put these items into a database and photograph the grave," Gainer said. Read about the demanding work of Arlington's burial crews Then the mementos are put into plastic bags with a note card with the date of collection, the fallen service member's name and the grave number. Not everything is saved. Perishable items like food or flowers are left on the grave. But if a note is attached, it's collected and saved. A plain pebble on top of a headstone will be left alone, but if someone has written or painted something personal on the stone, it will be saved. They even save some of the empty beer and liquor bottles that often turn up next to the headstones. And on some graves, like that of Pfc. Kenneth Zeigler, nothing is disturbed. Zeigler's mother asked the Army not to collect anything off … [Read more...]

Deaths as Israeli forces storm Gaza aid ship

e3df6bfb34f2ed86ac62ed30f6dd2255

Turkish TV footage appeared to show Israeli troops on board More than 10 people have been killed after Israeli commandos stormed a convoy of ships carrying aid to the Gaza Strip, the Israeli army says. Armed forces boarded the largest vessel overnight, clashing with some of the 500 people on board. It happened about 40 miles (64 km) out to sea, in international waters. Israel says its soldiers were shot at and attacked with weapons; the activists say Israeli troops came on board shooting. The activists were attempting to defy a blockade imposed by Israel after the Islamist movement Hamas took power in Gaza in 2007. There has been widespread condemnation of the violence, with several countries summoning the Israeli ambassadors serving there. UN chief Ban Ki-moon said he was "shocked by reports of killings and injuries" and called for a "full investigation" into what happened. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed his "full backing" for the military involved in the raid, his office said on Monday. 'Guns and knives' The six-ship flotilla, carrying 10,000 tonnes of aid, left the coast of Cyprus on Sunday and had been due to arrive in Gaza on Monday. Israel had repeatedly said the boats would not be allowed to reach Gaza. Israel says its soldiers boarded the lead ship in the early hours but were attacked with axes, knives, bars and at least two guns. ANALYSIS Continue reading the main story Jonathan Marcus Jonathan Marcus BBC diplomatic correspondent This was always going to be a high-risk operation for Israel both in terms of reputation and diplomatic repercussions. Taking over vessels at sea is no easy task, even if the units carrying out the mission are well-trained, and it is especially difficult if the people already on board the vessels resist. The full details of what happened will emerge in time, but in political terms the damage has already been done. The deaths threaten to make what was always going to be a potential public relations disaster for Israel into a fully-fledged calamity. "Unfortunately this group were dead-set on confrontation," Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev told the BBC. "Live fire was used against our forces. They initiated the violence, that's 100% clear," he said. Organisers of the flotilla said at least 30 people were wounded in the incident. Israel says 10 of its soldiers were injured, one seriously. A leader of Israel's Islamic Movement, Raed Salah, who was on board, was among those hurt. Audrey Bomse, a spokesperson for the Free Gaza Movement, which is behind the convoy, told the BBC Israel's actions were disproportionate. "We were not going to pose any violent resistance. The only resistance that there might be would be passive resistance such as physically blocking the steering room, or blocking the engine room downstairs, so that they couldn't get taken over. But that was just symbolic resistance." She said there was "absolutely … [Read more...]

On heels of failure, BP vows to start again — soon

STORY HIGHLIGHTS * New attempt to stop gushing oil could start early this week * Method involves cutting lower marine riser package and lowering cap * BP's CEO apologizes for "disruption," says BP is boosting effort to contain oil * Spill is in its 42nd day (CNN) -- BP could try to cap a massive oil gusher again early this week in an attempt to solve what the Obama administration has called "probably the biggest environmental disaster we've ever faced in this country." As the oil spill entered its 42nd day Monday, efforts to clean up coastal areas and develop a new plan of attack continued. All previous attempts at containing the crude gushing from BP's undersea well have failed, including a "top kill" approach that many had pinned their hopes on. BP said Sunday that it would strengthen its efforts to stop the flow and protect the coastline. "As far as I'm concerned, a cup of oil on the beach is a failure," BP CEO Tony Hayward told reporters in Venice, Louisiana. Hayward said he was sorry for the spill and the "massive disruption" it has caused the Gulf Coast. "There's no one who wants this over more than I do. I would like my life back," Hayward told reporters. But he said the company has about 30 aircraft searching for signs of oil and has moved more than 300 people to offshore "floatels" to speed up its response time. Up to 19,000 barrels (798,000 gallons) of oil a day have been spewing out of a BP-owned undersea well since the late April sinking of the drill rig Deepwater Horizon. BP, rig owner Transocean Ltd. and oilfield services company Halliburton have blamed each other for the disaster, which left 11 workers dead, but BP is responsible for cleanup under federal law. "We're disappointed the oil is going to flow for a while, and we're going to redouble our efforts to keep it off the beaches," BP Managing Director Robert Dudley said on CNN's "State of the Union." The most recent setback was the failure of the so-called "top kill" method of pumping mud to plug the leak. RELATED TOPICS * Gulf Coast Oil Spill * BP plc * Offshore Drilling * Louisiana Dudley said the next effort will involve placing a custom-built cap to fit over a piece of equipment called the "lower marine riser package." The process will involve cutting the riser package to create a clean surface to cap, Dudley said, and warm water will be circulated around the cap to prevent the freezing that hindered a previous dome-cap effort. If successful, the procedure will allow BP to collect most -- but not all -- of the oil spewing from the well. The long-term solution is the drilling of a relief well that will be in place by August. "If we can contain the flow of the well between now and August and keep it out of the ocean, that's also a good outcome as well," Dudley said. "And then, if we can shut it off completely with a relief well, that's not a bad outcome compared to where we are today." On … [Read more...]

Pakistani court removes Facebook ban

fb6d3ed99f9a655b93dfdb71c15e2b52

A court in Pakistan has ordered the authorities to restore the Facebook social networking site. The court had ordered the blocking of the site after a petition was filed against a competition featuring caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. The petition, filed by a lawyers' group called the Islamic Lawyers' Movement, said the contest was "blasphemous". Pakistan's deputy attorney told the court on Monday that Facebook had withdrawn the competition. The Facebook page in question contained caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad and characters from other religions, including Hinduism and Christianity, as well as comments both critical and supportive of Islam. On Monday, Justice Ejaz Ahmed Chaudhry of the Lahore High Court reversed his 19 May order to the Pakistani authorities to block the site. "Restore Facebook. We don't want to block access to information," Justice Chaudhry told the court. He asked the government to develop a system to find out how countries like Saudi Arabia were blocking access to "blasphemous" content on the internet. "It is the government's job to take care of such things, which spark resentment among the people and bring them onto the streets. "They should take steps to block any blasphemous content on the internet," Justice Chaudhry said. Last week, Pakistan restored access to popular video sharing website YouTube only after blocking some pages for "sacrilegious content". Correspondents say that the internet is uncensored in Pakistan but the government monitors content by routing all traffic through a central exchange. In the past, Pakistan has often blocked access to pornographic sites and sites with anti-Islamic content. It has deemed such material as offensive to the political and security establishment of the country, says the BBC's M Ilyas Khan in Islamabad. In 2007, the government banned the YouTube site, allegedly to block material offensive to the government of Pervez Musharraf. The action led to widespread disruption of access to the site for several hours. The ban was later lifted. … [Read more...]

The Power Of Good Friends

eadestuction

We've already talked about identifying toxic friendships, and the need to repair them or get out of them. The flip side of that is also true: Surrounding yourself with good friends is a great way to become a Better Man. Having positive people in your life can help you in many ways, and it's important to understand how these friendships work. Don't misunderstand; we're not saying that you “use” your friends as a means to an end or for the way they benefit you. However, a good friendship can be like an alliance, with both parties getting support and resources to be their best, along with the good feelings and good times. Read on as we explain the power of good friends. Goal achievement We've talked in the past about toxic friends who may want you to spend time with them instead of working on things that matter to you. One reason, that few people admit, is that they often get jealous when those close to them achieve great success. Toxic friends don't want to get left behind, so they try to hold you back with them. A good friend can do the opposite, and together you can each achieve success in things that matter to you. Focus on friends who are able to be genuinely happy for you, and share their joy when things go right for them. Healthy competition We said in the toxic friends article that people are generally the average of their friends in interests, happiness and even income. That doesn't mean you're stuck in place, just that you should surround yourself with good friends who better themselves. As we get better, some of our friends can try to hold us back, but positive friends can actually cheer you on. Use your friends’ successes as motivation; help them achieve their goals and hit their milestones to motivate you. And when they hit a big success, and you feel that little flash of jealousy, use it. Be jealous of what they have, and use that energy in a positive way to go out and get yours. Look at the good things they have and promise yourself you'll achieve the same -- it's only a negative emotion if you don't take any action, and sit and seethe. Accountability If you've ever struggled to keep a commitment to yourself, accountability can help. Making your commitment known to other people gives you more incentive to stay true to your goal. People use accountability to stay on track all the time. From joining a weight loss program to even AA meetings, having other people know your goal makes it harder for you to blow off your promise. You can use a good friend as a one-man support group. Share your goal with your friend, and ask them to help you keep on track. If you've ever had a friend you work out with, you know how much this helps. If they don't have the same goal you do, you can still share. This could be as simple as getting together once a week for a coffee, and telling them about your progress. Having somebody you respect and who cares about helping you stay on track will keep you focused and encouraged when times get tough. And … [Read more...]

Sexually Aggressive Women

pc-amor-sexy-Love-Couple-romantic-c

Men are used to initiating everything -- from the first contact to sex to proposing marriage. Guys are the ones who have to do all the hard work while women sit around and wait for wonderful things to happen. It must be difficult being the one who always has to do the pursuing rather than being the one chased by an admirer. But what if the tables were turned? Do you think you'd be thrilled if your woman always did the chasing when it came to sex? Now before you jump into an enthusiastic chant of "Hell yeahs," keep in mind the famous maxim: "Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it." Would you know how to keep a sexually demanding woman happy? why is she aggressive? The female orgasm is no longer a shot in the dark; now, most women expect to orgasm virtually every time they make love. And if you can't get it right, they'll teach you how to do it by taking over the situation. And look around you: Virtually every television commercial, movie, music video, and billboard ad displays sexually aggressive, um, I mean, assertive women. Therefore, women are quickly picking up on the fact that being sexually aggressive does not necessarily make them tramps. Unfortunately, many women will not let on about their sexual aggressiveness until later in the relationship for fear that their partner might think they've been around. But if your woman was raised in an environment in which sexuality was not shunned or treated with disdain, she'll likely be very comfortable with her own sexuality. This can result in a woman who may very well have you limping out of the bedroom once she's through with you. she wants it all The wonderful thing about a sexually aggressive woman is that she's completely in tune with what she enjoys when it comes to lovemaking. She has no qualms about letting her lover know what makes her tick. As well, she'll always be up for a sexual escapade with you, and she'll likely be bold in and out of the bedroom. You can rest assured that she's not shy or uncomfortable about discussing fantasies and naughty little ideas. The best part of having an aggressive lover is that you won't always have to be the one who initiates; she won't hesitate to take off your clothes and sit on top of you. This is the kind of woman who could make love to you with slow-motioned sensuality or enjoy some sexual frolic made up of animalistic intuition. And the fact that she goes in search of her own orgasms takes away some of the pressures that most guys feel when it comes to having sex. Now you don't have to worry about making her climax because she'll ensure that the both of you do. Is there a downside to women like this? the drawbacks Although most guys swear that they would do virtually anything to land a woman who would tell it like it is and treat them like sexual prey on a nightly basis, reality dictates otherwise for some. I talked to several guys who had the advantage of dating such women, and many discussed their … [Read more...]

Ron Jeremy Fondly Remembers a Former Colleague … Gary Coleman

d0fe12d58d63ac0bbb8ab8c952a6935e

They were an odd couple: a porn star whose sexual partners number over 2,000 and a former child star who was a real-life 40-year-old virgin. But when news hit about the death of former child star Gary Coleman, his passing struck up some fond remembrances for Ron Jeremy. “I loved his smile,” said Jeremy, who worked with the diminutive star of Diff’rent Strokes professionally in four projects. “Getting to know Coleman wasn’t easy," Jeremy told AVN. “Gary was very serious sometimes. ... If he didn’t know you, he’d say hi and just keep walking. ... He didn’t want to spend a lot of time with people he didn’t know.” Underneath that shy exterior was a playful soul. “He loved toys,” Jeremy said. “He didn’t experience a real childhood,” he added, as explanation for why Coleman found such satisfaction in such pursuits as playing with model trains. The differences between the unlikely partners were highlighted when they both appeared on The Weakest Link in 2002. Talking about their stint on the game show, Jeremy recalled, “I voted him off, and then Corey Feldman voted me off. That was the show where after Annie announced that I had been with thousands of women, Gary said, ‘I’m the opposite of Ron Jeremy—I’m a virgin.’ ” And, added Jeremy, Coleman was “happy to be so.” Coleman also shared a television set with Jeremy in 2004, when the porn star was on The Surreal Life with an oddball assortment of characters that included Tammy Faye Messner (formerly Bakker), Vanilla Ice and Erik Estrada. Gary Coleman had a guest-starring role, but he stormed off the set. According to Jeremy, Coleman was annoyed when Vanilla Ice repeatedly repeated Coleman’s catch phrase from Diff’rent Strokes, “Whatchu talking’ ’bout, Willis?” Most recently, Jeremy and Coleman acted together in Midgets vs. Mascots, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2009. Jeremy served as narrator on the film, a mockumentary about a very short porn star (not played by Coleman). The film, which Jeremy says “is available at Blockbuster right now,” also features porn star Sunny Lane. But Jeremy’s favorite collaboration with Coleman was their first: working on Kid Rock’s “Cowboy” music video, in which Coleman and Kid Rock’s sidekick Joe C. engaged in a gun battle while Jeremy played the piano. “Anybody can see it right now,” Jeremy said, noting the video can be found on YouTube. “We used to joke around,” Jeremy said, but Coleman had a very serious side. “He didn’t believe he could separate romance and sex. He asked me, ‘How could you make these movies—you don’t really love these girls?" Laughing, the adult legend recalled telling Coleman that if he wanted to “learn how to separate the two,” Jeremy would give him a chance to star in a porn movie. “No thanks,” Jeremy said the actor told him, adding gently, “I don’t believe he ever saw [a porn movie], and that’s … [Read more...]

‘Top kill’ BP operation to halt US oil leak fails

b07d01f9e047919b36f0772cbd7495b9

The latest attempt to stop the Gulf of Mexico oil leak has failed, the oil giant BP has said. BP chief operating officer Doug Suttles said the firm was now shifting to a new strategy to stop the spill. In the failed procedure - known as "top kill" - the firm had been blasting waste material and heavy mud into a ruptured well. US President Barack Obama said the continued flow of oil was "as enraging as it is heartbreaking". The worst oil spill in US history began when a drilling rig exploded and sank last month, killing 11 people. The thick crude has already permeated more than 70 miles (110km) of Louisiana's coastline, threatening fragile wetlands and putting the vital fishing industry at risk. Pollution fears Mr Suttles said BP had determined that the "top kill" method - which had been going on since Wednesday - had failed after studying the results for three days. "We have not been able to stop the flow," he told reporters on Saturday. "This scares everybody, the fact that we can't make this well stop flowing, the fact that we haven't suceeded so far," he said. The company says it pumped 30,000 barrels of mud into the well, in three attempts, at rates of up to 80 barrels a minute, but it had not worked. PAST ATTEMPTS TO STEM OIL LEAK Continue reading the main story * Oil booms - partly successful * Controlled burning - causes serious air pollution * Dispersant used - scientists warn it may kill marine life * Huge dome placed over leak - became blocked by ice crystals * Mile-long tube - fails to suck up large amount of oil * "Top-kill" method to pump heavy mud - abandoned Send us your comments It is the latest procedure to have failed since attempts to plug the leak began, with BP having spent more than $940 million (£645 million) so far. An initial plan to place a 125-tonne dome over the leak failed when it became blocked with ice crystals. A mile-long tube designed to capture some of the gushing oil was also unsuccessful. The next option after the failure of "top kill" is called the lower-marine-riser-package (LMRP) cap containment system. It involves an underwater robot using a saw to hack off the leaking pipe and place a cap over it. The LMRP cap is already on site and the operation is expected to last four days. BP says it cannot guarantee that the new method - which has not been carried out at depths of 5,000 feet before - will be successful. At least 12,000 barrels (504,000 gallons) are leaking into the Gulf every day. 'Lost lifestyle' The BBC's Andy Gallacher says the failure is another blow for the region. Our correspondent says that people in Louisiana are growing increasingly impatient and angry. Some fishermen have nailed up signs, with one reading "BP, you ruined our futures and our heritage", our correspondent adds. "Everybody's starting to realise this summer's lost. And our whole lifestyle might be lost," Michael Ballay, the manager … [Read more...]

China fails to censure North Korea at warship summit

7a7cfaf8ed4db0035526f54459ebd61c

China has held back from censuring North Korea at a summit in South Korea dominated by the issue of a sunken warship. South Korea has accused North Korea of torpedoing the Cheonan, which sank on 26 March with the loss of 46 lives. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said the priority was to reduce tensions and avoid a clash over the incident. But he did not mention North Korea by name or show support for possible UN sanctions against Pyongyang. Mr Wen's remarks came at a summit in Jeju island with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak and Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama. The three-nation summit was meant to focus on trade, but the sinking of the warship overshadowed other issues. Seoul says it has overwhelming evidence to show that North Korea sank the Cheonan. It is seeking a unified international response to the communist state though the UN Security Council. Japan and the US have offered South Korea their support - but it is veto-wielding China that is seen as key to what happens next. 'Defuse tensions' Speaking at the talks, Mr Wen said avoiding conflict between the Koreas was "most urgent", but did not apportion blame for the sinking. China is North Korea's closest trading partner and the nation believed to have the most influence on it.
