YouTube Adds 'Safety Mode'

Nod to parents is reportedly in response to concern from groups such as iKeepSafe.org SAN BRUNO, Calif.—YouTube is calling it a nod to its diversity of content. CBS News is saying it's in response to pressure from parents. But whatever the reason, the massive video-sharing site today incorporated parental filtering mechanisms into its product. "Diversity of content is one of the great things about YouTube," wrote Jamie Davidson, associate product manager, on the YouTube blog. "But we know that some of you want a more controlled experience. That's why we're announcing Safety Mode, an opt-in setting that helps screen out potentially objectionable content that you may prefer not to see or don't want others in your family to stumble across while enjoying YouTube. An example of this type of content might be a newsworthy video that contains graphic violence such as a political protest or war coverage. While no filter is 100% perfect, Safety Mode is another step in our ongoing desire to give you greater control over the content you see on the site. "It's easy to opt in to Safety Mode: Just click on the link at the bottom of any video page. You can even lock your choice on that browser with your YouTube password. To learn more, check out the video below. "And remember, ALL content must still comply with our Community Guidelines. Safety Mode isn't fool proof, but it provides a greater degree of control over your YouTube experience. Safety Mode is rolling out to all users through out the day; watch for the new link at the bottom of any YouTube page." According to the CBS story, "Marsali Hancock, the president of Internet safety advocacy group iKeepSafe.org, was one of several parents who started complaining to YouTube nearly two years ago, urging the company to do more to keep teens from seeing sexually explicit, violent and other dangerous content, such as a video promoting anorexia, while still enabling them to enjoy the site." Like the word "pornography," however, Hancock has stretched the meaning of the term "sexually explicit" beyond recognition. 18 USC defines it as, "Actual or simulated sexual intercourse, including genital-genital, oral-genital, anal-genital, or oral-anal, whether between persons of the same or opposite sex; bestiality; masturbation; sadistic or masochistic abuse; or lascivious exhibition of the genitals or pubic area of any person." Of course, Hancock and other parents may have good reason to want to control what their children see on YouTube, and the addition of such controls is arguably long overdue, but the slow degradation of the correct meaning of such important and legally meaningful words and terms also is cause for concern. … [Read more...]

Syren Latex Featured in Bridgestone Tires’ Super Bowl Commercial

LOS ANGELES — The estimated 106.5 million viewers of Sunday’s Super Bowl got a glimpse at a sexy blonde dressed in Syren Latex featured in a Bridgestone Tires commercial. The 30-second spot that ran during the big game is described as having a post-apocalyptic feel, and tells the story of a villainous gang trying to steal the Bridgestone Tires off a car they have stopped on a rain-slicked highway by erecting a barricade in the dark of night. The tough-guy leader of the gang threatens the driver with the challenge, “Okay, here’s the deal, your tires or your life.” He then proceeds to laugh maniacally. The driver spins his car 180 degrees, leaving behind the bewildered, beautiful blonde, attired in Syren’s gleaming, skintight black rubber top and leggings set, which was a customized version of Syren’s Zippered Latex Halter. The gang leader quickly realizes that he was misunderstood because of his thick Cockney accent, and he shouts hopelessly at the quickly disappearing driver: “Wait! Stop! I said your tires or your life, not your wife.” Syren’s latex couture collection is available at Syren.com. The boutique is located at 2809 1/2 W. Sunset Blvd., in Los Angeles. … [Read more...]

Hackers Rebel Over Porn Filtering

b1b934d12f7284e819acfdda6bebe94f

SYDNEY — Hackers took down a number of Australian government websites Wednesday in strategic attacks protesting against a planned Internet filter aimed at online adult content. The distributed denial of service attacks, reported by the Herald Sun, crippled Australia's parliamentary website as well as its communications unit. The attacks were launched by hackers known as "Anonymous." "No government should have the right to refuse its citizens access to information solely because they perceive it to be 'unwanted'," the group said in an email. "The Australian government will learn that one does not mess with our porn." Fiona Patten of the Australian Sex Party told XBIZ in December that the filter would block 95 percent of adult websites and slow down the web dramatically. "How your can have a filter blocking access to more than 4 million sites with more than 420 million pages and not slow the Internet down is beyond belief," she said. Porn censorship in Australia recently has been ramped up, according to Patten. Just last month, Patten alleged that government censors are directing customs officials to confiscate media where depictions of the female orgasm is accompanied with an ejaculation. She also complained that some adult videos recently have been rejected by censors because they starred small-breasted women who could be confused as minors and appear underaged. “We are starting to see depictions of women in their late 20s being banned because they have an A-cup size,” she said. … [Read more...]

Newly released 9/11 NYPD photos show WTC collapse

47b3-APTOPIX-Attacks-World-Trade-Center

NEW YORK — Newly released aerial photos of the World Trade Center terror attack capture the towers' dramatic collapse, from just after the first fiery plane strike to the apocalyptic dust clouds that spread over lower Manhattan and its harbor. The images were taken from a police helicopter — the only photographers allowed in the air space near the towers on Sept. 11, 2001. They were obtained by ABC News after it filed a Freedom of Information Act request last year with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, which investigated the collapse. The chief curator of the planned Sept. 11 museum, which is compiling a digital archive of attack coverage, said the still images are "a phenomenal body of work" that show a new, wide-angle look at the towers' collapse and the gray dust clouds that shrouded the city afterward. The photos are "absolutely core to understanding the visual phenomena of what was happening," said Jan Ramirez, chief curator at the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. The images of the dust clouds rising as high as some downtown skyscrapers "are some of the most exceptional images in the world, I think, of this event," Ramirez said. ABC said the NIST gave the network 2,779 pictures on nine CDs, saying some of the photographs had never been released before. The network posted 12 photos this week on its Web site, all taken by ex-NYPD Aviation Unit Detective Greg Semendinger, who was first in the air in a search for survivors on the rooftop. He said he and his pilot watched the second plane hit the south tower from the helicopter. "We didn't find one single person. It was surreal," he told The Associated Press on Wednesday. "There was no sound. No sound whatsoever, but the noise of the radio and the helicopter. I just kept taking pictures." He took three rolls of film with his Minolta camera, plus 245 digital shots. Semendinger said he gave the digital images to the 9/11 Commission and believes those images were released by the NSIT. In the days after the attack, he e-mailed some of the photos to friends and several were posted on the Internet. Later, nine of the images were published in a book called "Above Hallowed Ground: A Photographic Record of Sept. 11" without his consent. The book was a tribute to the officers who were killed that day. The photos capture the enormous scope of the dust that enveloped the area. In some images, the tops of the nearby Woolworth Building and other skyscrapers can be seen rising above the billowing dark plume against a clear blue sky. Buildings can hardly be seen at all in one image — just a burst of dust clouds hanging over the serene Hudson River at the southern tip of Manhattan. A close-up image from earlier in the morning shows orange flames and black smoke rising past the antenna on top of the north tower, the first hit by a hijacked plane. Ramirez said the museum, which is slated to open in 2012, saw a selection of the photos at police headquarters several years ago. They … [Read more...]

Honda extends airbag recall by 437,000 cars

Honda has been dealing with the airbag problem since 2008 Honda has added 437,700 cars, mainly in North America, to its existing global safety recall over airbag inflation problems. It broadens a recall announced in late 2008 for less than 4,000 Accord and Civic sedans, then expanded in mid-2009 to cover another 510,000 vehicles. The latest announcement also covers Japan, Mexico, Taiwan and Australia. The fresh blow to Japanese carmakers came as Toyota recalled nearly half a million hybrid cars over faulty brakes. Toyota has already had to bring millions of other vehicles back to dealerships amid accelerator and floormat problems. We cannot be completely certain the airbag inflator will perform as designed Honda statement Toyota in global recall of Prius Toyota fights back Mardell's America: Toyota's woes The scale of Toyota's recalls will be of particular interest to other car manufacturers, according to David Leggett, editor of the website Justauto.com. "Toyota have been keen to cut costs by increasingly using common parts in different models. If a part goes wrong in one model then other models will need to be recalled," he said. "I'm sure lots of other car manufacturers will be keeping a very close eye on what's happening with Toyota." Recalls within the car industry, however, are not uncommon. "They happen pretty regularly," said Jay Nagley, an industry analyst with Redspy Automotive. "At the moment they are in the news because of what's happening with Toyota, but if Honda had done its recall months ago no would have heard about it. "Everyone's looking for the next recall, but it's business as usual for carmakers despite what's in the news." Airbag inflator Honda - Japan's second-biggest carmaker - said the defective airbags can overinflate and burst, spraying potentially deadly metal shards. The carmaker said the inflators were at risk of rupturing, "resulting in metal fragments passing through the airbag cushion material and possibly causing injury or fatality to vehicle occupants". The fault has already been linked to 11 injuries and one fatality. Honda said in a statement: "We cannot be completely certain that the driver's airbag inflator in the vehicles being added to this recall at this time will perform as designed." Its shares fell in Japan after the announcement. The recall will apply to 2001 and 2002 model-year Accord, Civic, Odyssey, Pilot, CL, CR-V and 2002 Acura TL vehicles, the firm said. The company says owners should take their vehicle to an authorised dealer as soon as they receive notification from Honda. The carmaker's latest recall affects 378,000 cars in the US and 41,000 in Canada. It extends to 4,000 vehicles in Japan and 13,000 from other countries, including Mexico (9,000), Taiwan (1,300) and Australia (700). HONDA RECALLS Nov 2008: Airbag propellant problem reported in US. The rescue operation in Afghanistan At least 150 people have been killed in a series of avalanches that have blocked a mountain pass north of Kabul, Afghan officials say. Rescuers are trying to reach hundreds more people who are trapped in their vehicles in the Salang Pass. Some 2,500 people have been rescued so far, but scores more are feared buried following several days of heavy snow. More than two dozen avalanches have hit the pass since Monday, blocking 2.1 miles (3.5km) of road. 'Frozen bodies' Interior Ministry spokesman Zemeri Bashary told the AP news agency rescuers had recovered 157 bodies from the road, which connects the Afghan capital with the north, over the past two days. Officials said crews were working to clear the route near the Salang tunnel for ambulances, bulldozers and other road-clearing equipment. Salang Tunnel - Afghanistan's dangerous lifeline "There are many other cars swept away," Gen Mohammad Rajab, the head of the Kabul-Salang highway, told Reuters news agency. "The death toll may rise as we dig out dozens of other frozen bodies." The area is often affected by heavy snow and has been hit by avalanches in the past, the BBC's Martin Patience says from Kabul. On Tuesday, Afghan Interior Minister Mohammad Hanif Atmar fended off questions as to why the road had been open in the first place, insisting the situation had appeared manageable until snowstorms unexpectedly struck. Meanwhile, an Indian soldier was killed but 13 others were rescued after a second avalanche in two days in Kashmir. The snow struck an army post on Tuesday in Indian-administered Kashmir, along the Line of Control adjoining Pakistani-administered Kashmir, officials said. At least 17 Indian soldiers were killed on Monday when an avalanche hit a military training camp in Indian-administered Kashmir, the army said. … [Read more...]

Haiti quake death toll rises to 230,000

47272535_008706562-1

Damaged buildings are being demolished in Port-au-Prince Haiti's government says around 230,000 people died in last month's earthquake, 18,000 more than its previous estimate. The toll from the 12 January quake is approaching that of the 2004 Asian tsunami, which killed 250,000 people. Communications Minister Marie-Laurence Jocelyn Lassegue said the toll was not definitive. About 300,000 were injured. The latest figure does not include bodies buried by private funeral homes in private cemeteries, or the dead buried by their own families. The one-month anniversary of the catastrophic quake is to be marked with prayer vigils and fasting. A BBC correspondent in the capital Port-au-Prince says there is increasing concern that with the rainy season approaching, the lack of tents and temporary shelter could lead to the outbreak of disease. Supermarket collapse In the biggest of the camps that sprung up in the city after the earthquake, people are still living under sheeting strung across wooden poles. Aid agency officials said there was a plan to get thousands of the most vulnerable homeless people into tents ahead of the rains. But the challenges of putting large numbers of tents in the crowded camps are considerable. Meanwhile, there are reports that a damaged supermarket collapsed while people were inside. Rescue teams, which had been retrieving bodies of quake victims from the site, tried to remove debris to reach an estimated five to eight people trapped underneath. It was unclear if they were alive. They were allegedly looters, AFP news agency reported. … [Read more...]

Can You Ever Be Friends With Your Ex?

412d8e1b61612e3b7d71d7429c2598fd

In most relationships, the time to say goodbye usually arrives at one point or another -- unless you intend to walk down the aisle, of course (and even then...). With your ex, you've shared memories that will either make you laugh or cry, and it's time to take your experiences, put them in your back pocket and move on. But somewhere on the road of parting ways couples feel the need to promise to stay friends -- which ultimately leads to more broken promises. So, can you ever be friends with your ex? Does it have to be all-or-nothing? Comfort zone Although it would make things much easier in the dating world, relationships rarely see mutual breakups. One person is usually the heartbreaker, while the other mulls over the breakup for weeks, even months. It's never easy to break up with someone you've shared good times with (and even if they were bad times, they were still times). But the person who does the breaking up feels like less of a bad guy by offering that sense of truce: "It's not you, it's me. We can still be friends." This peace offering of friendship provides the dumper with the solace of knowing they aren't such a horrible person because they still want to be friends with their ex. I've created a monster Not only does it give the dumper the comfort of knowing they aren't monsters, but by wanting to remain friends, it also allows the dumper to feel that their former lover will still be in their life, and they won't have to miss having them around. So now the dumper can move on with their life with ease, and with the pleasure of having coffee with their former mate every so often. The person who got dumped, however, has the pleasure of being constantly reminded of the person who ripped out their heart when they receive friendly messages and e-mail. Obviously, these messages on the machine and coffee dates don't last long, and if they do, they end even worse than the breakup. So, having considered all this, can you ever be friends with your ex? We say no. Find out why. exes must stay that way because You've seen each other naked Although it may be possible to have casual sex with a friend, even this can damage a relationship. As hard as it is to accept, it's difficult to bring a relationship back to its normal state after having been intimate with someone. You will always have an image of that person naked, and memories of the trysts will always be triggered by the smell of her skin or perfume, or even by hearing a song that you once made passionate love to. And as thick-skinned as you are, it's hard to see the person in the same light after being entangled in each other's skin and sharing a moment of sheer ecstasy with one another. Can you ever be friends with your ex? We say no, and we have more reasons.. You can't confide in each other As hard as two exes try to stay friends, they can never really confide in each other. How do you tell your ex that you have a hot date tonight or that you and your new lover are going away on a steamy … [Read more...]
