Let's make Super Bowl an official holiday

Big game is completely ingrained in our culture, unlike Presidents' Day OPINION By Bob Cook NBCSports.com contributor updated 6:49 p.m. ET, Sun., Feb. 4, 2007 Bob Cook Heritage Christian School in Indianapolis understands that after celebrating one of the holiest of American holidays, everyone could use a day off to relax and recover. It’s high time we as a nation followed its lead. Heritage Christian has already told its 1,500 students, preschool through high school, and staff to stay home Feb. 5 — the day after the hometown Indianapolis Colts play the Chicago Bears in Super Bowl XLI. The game probably won’t be over until 10 p.m. local time. The school figures, correctly, what’s the point of trying to teach sleepy kids the next day? But why should any of us be at work or school the next day? We all need the day to relax and recover from our day of national celebration. The Super Bowl has long passed the point of mere championship football game into an event worthy of a national holiday — the Super Bowl, and the Super Bowl (observed). The Super Bowl certainly satisfies the requirements for a true holiday: people, particularly those who don’t see each other often, gathering in large groups, eating and drinking heartily. Plus, it’s less stressful, because you don’t have to get anything for anybody. (Unless you’re betting, and you have to pay back your bookie.) Super Bowl weekend is not very different from Thanksgiving as a football-centric holiday, except that you can eat chicken wings instead of turkey, and you’re assured you will never have to sit through a Detroit Lions game. And most people get a four-day weekend for Thanksgiving. For those who wonder if it’s practically blasphemous to elevate Super Bowl to a three-day holiday weekend, well — first tell Heritage Christian, which requires students to give a detailed account of being saved by Jesus Christ as a prerequisite for enrollment. Then, think about what Super Bowl means as a unifying force to America. It used to be that Christmas was the big, unifying holiday. But that was before we acknowledged, much to some legislators’ chagrin, that not everybody is a Christian. Christmas is now one of the most divisive holidays in America, so much so that anyone saying something other than “Happy Holidays” in December is seen as some sort of intolerant freak. But everybody can agree on the Super Bowl as a holiday. As everything in American life has become more fragmented, compartmentalized, demographified (if that’s a word), the Super Bowl still gathers people of all faiths and all ages together in celebration of things that make our country great: knee-snapping athleticism, hyperinflated commercialism, and the hope that one day, again, we might see someone’s nipple for one-sixty-fourth of a second on network television. And homemade bean dip. We Americans have made Super Bowl Monday a de facto post-holiday holiday, which we need because we treat the run-up … [Read more...]

ESPN - Saints-Colts Preview Countdown Daily: AccuScore Report SB XLIVSCOUTING REPORT Saints-Colts: 10 observations After breaking down film of both teams, Scouts Inc. offers 10 things to watch in the Saints-Colts Super Bowl matchup. 1. Slow down the Colts' offense: Indianapolis is operating at an extremely high level on offense. Against the Jets, WRs Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie combined for 274 yards, while Peyton Manning threw for 377. Reggie Wayne is one of the best wide receivers in the game and has a fantastic symmetry with Manning. The vastly underrated Jabari Greer held Sidney Rice to only 43 receiving yards and is the Saints' best cover man in a good secondary, but the Colts are just dripping with firepower in their precision attack. TE Visanthe Shiancoe gave the Saints serious problems in the second half, which makes you wonder what Dallas Clark might do. Adrian Peterson had three touchdowns and ran for 122 yards, and the Saints' run defense is a problem area. But while the Colts use their running game effectively, they win with Manning's right arm. Going against Manning is a daunting endeavor, but the Saints have beaten Kurt Warner and Brett Favre in back-to-back playoff games. · Full Scouting Report Matchup W-L PF PA HOME ROAD DIV CONF NOR 2-0 76 42 2-0 0-0 0-0 2-0 IND 2-0 50 20 2-0 0-0 0-0 2-0 · Complete Standings Individual Leaders New Orleans Passing CMP% YDS TD INT Brees 70.6 4388 34 11 Brunel... 50.0 102 0 1 Indianapolis Passing CMP% YDS TD INT Mannin... 68.8 4500 33 16 Painte... 28.6 83 0 2 New Orleans Rushing CAR YDS AVG TD Thomas 147 793 5.4 6 Bell 172 654 3.8 5 Indianapolis Rushing CAR YDS AVG TD Addai 219 828 3.8 10 Brown 78 281 3.6 3 New Orleans Receiving REC YDS AVG TD Colsto... 70 1074 15.3 9 Hender... 51 804 15.8 2 Indianapolis Receiving REC YDS AVG TD Wayne 100 1264 12.6 10 Clark 100 1106 11.1 10 Full Player Stats: New Orleans | Indianapolis TEAM AVERAGES & NFL RANKS TEAM OFFENSE TEAM PER GAME AVERAGE Total Yards NOR 404.0 IND 363.0 Yards Passing NOR 272.2 IND 282.2 Yards Rushing NOR 131.6 IND 80.9 TEAM DEFENSE TEAM PER GAME AVERAGE Yards Allowed NOR 357.8 IND 339.2 Pass Yds Allowed NOR 235.6 IND 212.7 Rush Yds Allowed NOR 122.2 IND 126.5 HEAD TO HEAD MATCHUPS (SINCE 2001) Indianapolis leads 2-1 Sep 6, 2007 NOR 10, IND 41 Sep 28, 2003 NOR 21, @IND 55 Nov 18, 2001 NOR 34, @IND 20 STATS LLC There may be more than a few people who are having a tough time hashing out their loyalties for Super Bowl XLIV. Where hope floats

ABOARD THE USNS COMFORT - David Louizar, an 8-year-old survivor of the Haiti earthquake, lay dazed in his bunk in this floating Navy hospital, his right arm and right leg amputated and a piece of flesh grafted onto the gaping hole where his nose had been. Dr. Marjorie Curran, a pediatrician from Massachusetts General Hospital, spoke quietly with David and his father, checking on the stunned and broken boy whose slow but probable recovery is the product of luck and medical mastery amid the hell that has devastated Haiti. Trapped under his crumpled house, David had been freed and flown by helicopter to this state-of-the-art ship that now provides the best medical care in Haiti. Anchored 2 miles off Port-au-Prince, it is the last hope of survival for many of the quake’s most seriously wounded. For Curran and dozens of other medical workers from Massachusetts who volunteered their services aboard the Comfort, the work has been intense, draining, satisfying, and heartbreaking. Babies have been born, patients have died, and excruciating decisions have been made about who can be saved and who will be left ashore to expire from untreatable wounds. “The operating rooms have been going 24 hours a day,’’ said Curran, a 47-year-old from Needham, Mass., who stopped midsentence to collect her emotions while speaking of David’s agonizing ordeal. Three days after the quake, outside the rubble of his home, David’s father called his son’s name - a parent’s hopeful reflex despite the staggering odds. Amazingly, Fanord Louizar heard an answer, his son was dug out, and the road to recovery began. Now, Curran is looking ahead to discharging David, who should heal physically but still faces a daunting future as a disabled child in an impoverished land. Victories like this are occurring every day aboard the Comfort, where the Massachusetts volunteers and others are working as part of Project Hope, which delivers emergency health care and humanitarian assistance around the world. The ship, the length of three football fields with 12 operating rooms and a crew of 1,200, is a veteran of Hurricane Katrina and the Sept. 11 attack on New York. Since arriving off Port-au-Prince on Jan. 21, patients and medical supplies have been airlifted to the Comfort in a near-continuous march of relief. Doctors and nurses had treated 776 patients through midnight Thursday and operated on 566 of them. Dr. Larry Ronan, a Mass. General internist, worked with the Navy to plan the mission and sailed aboard the ship from its home port of Baltimore to Port-au-Prince. “For a doctor, we need to be down there,’’ said Ronan, who is also the Red Sox team physician. “We need to let our neighbors know that in times of need, we’ll be there.’’ That sense of duty is shared by Kristin Sullivan, a nurse at Children’s Hospital Boston, who sat near a 6-week-old infant whose brain had been exposed when her home crashed down around her. “This is the first time I’ve … [Read more...]

West greets Iran nuclear claim with scepticism

Manouchehr Mottaki said "conducive ground" had been reached in talks Western powers have responded with scepticism to a claim by Iran that a deal to swap enriched uranium for nuclear fuel could now be close. Iran's Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki told a security conference in Germany that an agreement could be reached in a "not too distant future". But the US and European Union said they were unconvinced and Iran must make a meaningful offer or face new sanctions. China, which opposes further sanctions, said talks were at a "crucial stage". The US and its allies fear Iran is attempting to develop nuclear weapons. Iran insists its nuclear programme is peaceful in purpose. US Defence Secretary Robert Gates, in Ankara, cast doubt on Iran's talk of an imminent deal, telling reporters: "I don't have the sense that we're close to an agreement." Our hand is still reaching out towards them [Iran]. But so far it's reaching out into nothingness Guido Westerwelle German foreign minister If Iran was prepared to take up the proposal put forward by the so-called P5+1 - the US, Russia, China, UK and France plus Germany - on handing over its low-enriched uranium then it should take that message to the UN's nuclear watchdog, the IAEA, he said. He suggested that Western powers needed to think about whether it was now time to take a "different tack" on Iran. Meanwhile, German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle told the annual Munich security conference: "Our hand is still reaching out towards them [Iran]. But so far it's reaching out into nothingness. "And I've seen nothing since yesterday [Friday] that makes me want to change that view." The US National Security Adviser, General James Jones, warned of tighter sanctions and deeper international isolation for Iran. And EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton told the conference that Iran must respond to the head of the IAEA over its nuclear programme. NUCLEAR FUEL CYCLE Mined uranium ore is purified and reconstituted into solid form known as yellowcake Yellowcake is chemically processed and converted into Uranium Hexafluoride gas Gas is fed through centrifuges, where its isotopes separate and process is repeated until uranium is enriched Low-level enriched uranium is used for nuclear fuel Highly enriched uranium can be used in nuclear weapons In depth: Nuclear fuel cycle Q&A: Iran and the nuclear issue "There is a need to restore confidence in the peaceful nature of Iran's programme," she said, according to Reuters. "This must be done by dialogue. But dialogue takes two, and I'm ready to engage in meaningful and productive talks that deal directly with the issues that trouble us." The BBC Tehran correspondent Jon Leyne, reporting from London, says the strong suspicion is that the Iranian remarks are just another attempt to fend off new sanctions being proposed by the United States. Mr Mottaki made his comments on Friday after deciding to join the Munich conference - a major international gathering … [Read more...]

STORY HIGHLIGHTS * Snow continues to pile up, causing travel problems across Northeast * Forecasters are predicting as much as three feet of snow in some areas * Father, son killed in weather-related accident in Virginia, authorities say Washington (CNN) -- A powerful snowstorm pounded the nation's capital and other mid-Atlantic states early Saturday, snarling down traffic and bringing travel to a virtual standstill. Buses and above-ground rail services were suspended in Washington, and only underground trains would run Saturday, transportation officials said. Cancellation of ground transportation comes a few hours after flights were canceled at the Washington-Baltimore area's three main airports and at Philadelphia International Airport. Delta Air Lines had suspended flights in and out of Washington, Baltimore, Maryland and Philadelphia, said Delta spokesman Anthony Black. There will be limited service to Philadelphia on Saturday, he said. The company hopes to get flights back in service by Sunday. Check on flight delays In Maryland, Jawauna Greene, spokeswoman for the state transit administration, said the agency is assessing the metro route structure in Baltimore and its suburbs to determine where services will be offered. "We've been up all night assessing the situation," Greene said. The Metro is running special snow trains on its heavy rail and light rail lines to keep tracks clear, she said. Greene added that supervisors are checking the power lines that operate the light rail system to make sure they are safe to use. She said the agency will defer to the City of Baltimore Public Works Department in determining what routes to operate on Saturday. Video: Washington braces for storm RELATED TOPICS * Winter Weather * National Weather Service * D.C. Metro Area One of the major concerns is the handicapped mobility service, she said. "At this time, we're limiting mobility service to people with medical appointments only," Greene said. Women Get Horny Too

Do women ever get horny for no particular reason? ~ Anonymous Women absolutely get horny for no particular reason! Like men, the smallest thing can turn a woman on. It can be a cool breeze, the way she scoots off her chair or even the smell of the man on the elevator next to her. Sometimes she is unable to determine why she suddenly got turned on. Women get turned on from both physical and emotional feelings. In fact, all five senses play a role in turning a woman on. Unlike men, women don’t produce a noticeable physical change in their genitals when they do get turned on so it is much easier to hide. Even though women do not produce a noticeable physical change in their genitals, they often produce discharge or “cum” when they get turned on. Some women produce more than others based on the levels of different hormones her body regularly produces. Along with getting turned on and horny for no reason, women also have unexpected “mini orgasms.” A “mini orgasm” comes from the way the clitoris or other “hot spots” are touched. A woman could sit in such a way that it will send a “mini orgasm” through her body. “Mini orgasms” are sort of like when a person gets a very mild case of the chills. These “mini orgasms” are most often experienced during oral and penetrated sex, but the slightest movement can also create one unexpectedly. Women are run by their emotions much more than men and often times it’s a woman’s emotions that are turning her on unexpectedly. Sight, touch and sometimes sound are the senses that most often turn a man on. He sees a good looking woman or someone accidentally rubs up against his dick, POW! he’s turned on. Sight, touch, smell, sound and taste all play a role in turning a woman on because they tie emotions to all these senses. She is in the elevator and smells the cologne of a past boyfriend or she eats at the same place she once went on a date that turned to passionate sex. Things trigger a memory tied to an emotion and that could possibly get her engine revving. … [Read more...]

That means no talking with your mouth full and no foul language. That said, don't go overboard. Open the door for her, but don't go pulling her chair out for her. You want to look like a gentleman, not a servant. You also don't want to monopolize the conversation. As The Guy's Guide says: "You're nervous and trying to make sure that she thinks you're better (and more original) than the last guy who showed up at her door. The result can often be you talking about all the things you've accomplished while neglecting to ask her about her interests." She Doesn't Check Her E-Mail & More

Yes, it's that time once again: The day we feature your dating and relationship questions. Although we would like to answer each one personally and with as much detail as possible, the overwhelming amount of inquiries forces us to highlight those that are most interesting to AskMen.com readers. This week's Q&A focuses on what it means when she doesn’t check her e-mail and using NLP. David DeAngelo, author of Double Your Dating: What Every Man Should Know About How To Be Successful With Women, has your answers. reader’s comment Dave "THE MAN," This girl that I'm interested in has e-mail but never checks it because, according to what she says, her computer doesn't work. Go figure. But she did give me her cell phone number and home phone number. The problem is that every time I call her we talk for about 10 to 15 minutes and she says that she'll call me back later but never does. I mean never! Is this because she is playing hard to get or does it mean that I am just wasting my time and she is not interested? Should I just give up on her completely? How can I become the one who's in control and have her chasing me instead of me chasing her? How can I get her to start calling me? If you can answer this question, it will be one less thing for me to worry about when dealing with women and I will definitely consider you "THE MAN." Thanks, -R. david d. responds Where in my e-book or newsletters have you ever heard me say to talk on the phone for 10 to 15 minutes? Exactly. Nowhere. Why do you think this is? Because the more time you spend talking at the very beginning (when getting her e-mail and number, while on the phone setting up the next meeting, etc.) the more likely you are to screw it up. Don't waste time. Getting her e-mail and digits should take three to five minutes or so. Setting up a place to get together should take about the same. Here, I'll do another of my wonderful translations for you: You call up and say: "Hi, it's Irwin from last night calling... How are you? What are you doing? Oh, doing your hair, really? Cool. So, that was some band last night, huh? Pretty crowded bar, huh? Oh, sure... You need to go? Well, will you call me back later? OK, great, talk to you then." What she hears: "Hi, I'm lame and uncreative and I am interested in you, but I'm nervous and don't know how to ask you out, so I think I'll just talk about some lame, boring, mundane things and hope that maybe you'll have pity on me and offer to meet me sometime." Are you with me? For the rest of this answer involving a girl who doesn’t check her e-mail, click through… You need to call up and say: "Hey, I don't have long to talk, but I wanted to touch base and say ’Hi.’ I'm going to be busy today and tomorrow night, but let's get together Saturday for a cup of tea and some stimulating conversation." Bang and done. If you really want to use the advanced tactics, read my book and learn about how to use the "friendship frame" to disarm her at the end … [Read more...]

FSC Announces Anti-Piracy Action Program

f0af720e4e3b080379f0ba36175df80e

CANOGA PARK, Calif.—Free Speech Coalition (FSC) will introduce its newly developed Anti-Piracy Action Program (APAP) at the XBIZ LA trade show, Feb. 9 at 4 p.m. APAP is an inclusive program that tracks content with sophisticated spidering and fingerprinting software; compiles tracking data; sends DMCA notices to infringing websites from an attorney specializing in copyright infringement litigation; offers legal consultation and litigation services; and will negotiate with third-party websites (tube sites) to post content trailers that take users to an option for purchasing content, offering the content producer an opportunity for monetization. Program fees are based on the amount of content tracked, so that even small content production companies can participate, starting at a few hundred dollars a month. In order to sign up for APAP, participants must be active FSC members. “We’ve pulled together top entertainment industry copyright infringement software company Vobile, with one of the adult industry’s most recognized copyright infringement attorneys, Gill Sperlein, under the umbrella of Free Speech Coalition to provide a strategic, effective, cost-efficient program and put the adult industry in the forefront in resolving the issue of piracy,” FSC Executive Director Diane Duke said. “FSC has been working with producers, distributors, software companies and copyright attorneys to develop a program that will not only work for all companies regardless of size, but also have a significant impact industry-wide on the issue of copyright infringement,” Duke added. Development of the program took nearly a year. Adult industry technology experts Avi Bitton of Wicked Pictures and Tony Rios of Channel 1 Releasing were instrumental in researching and helping to select the tracking software, testing various software programs over a period of months. A seminar unveiling APAP will be held on Feb. 9 at 4 p.m., at the XBIZ conference, which takes place at the Sofitel Hotel in West Hollywood, Calif. A roundtable discussion featuring the program will be available on Feb. 11 at the FSC Membership Meeting. The Membership Meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. and is open to XBIZ LA attendees and active FSC members. Vobile representative Mike Witte will be present at the Feb. 9 seminar, to answer questions about the company’s tracking and fingerprinting software.
