Sister of Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi 'arrested in Iran'

Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Shirin Ebadi says her sister has been arrested by the intelligence services, hours after opposition figures were detained. Ms Ebadi said her sister Nooshin, a medical professor, was arrested at home on Monday evening, and taken to prison. She said her sister was only detained to prevent her own human rights work. Several journalists are also being held, according to opposition sources. Earlier, Tehran rejected international calls for it to halt the crackdown. On Monday, UK Foreign Secretary David Miliband hailed the "great courage" of the protesters and said it had been "particularly disturbing to hear accounts of the lack of restraint by the security forces" on Ashura, one of the holiest days in the Shia calendar. 'Punch on the mouth' In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said: "Britain will receive a punch on the mouth if it does not stop the nonsense." Designers of the unrest will soon pay the cost of their insolence Islamic Revolution Guards Corps The British ambassador has been summoned by officials to explain his country's "meddling" remarks, state media have reported. The Revolutionary Guards, a powerful force tasked with defending the country's Islamic system, meanwhile accused foreign media of joining hands with the opposition and staging a "psychological war". "Trying to overthrow the system will reach nowhere," the Isna news agency reported the Guards as saying. "Designers of the unrest will soon pay the cost of their insolence." Iran's government says the violent opposition protests across the country on Sunday, in which at least eight people were killed, were inspired and aided by the West. MPs have demanded "maximum punishment" for those involved. 'Blank warrant' In a statement posted on the opposition website, Rahesabz, Ms Ebadi said her sister had been arrested at 2100 (1630 GMT) on Monday at her home in Tehran by four intelligence agents and sent to prison. Condoms 'too big' for Indian men

Comment - I just report the news - I don't write it. This is crazy - It's from the BBC By Damian Grammaticus BBC News, Delhi A survey of more than 1,000 men in India has concluded that condoms made according to international sizes are too large for a majority of Indian men. The study found that more than half of the men measured had penises that were shorter than international standards for condoms. It has led to a call for condoms of mixed sizes to be made more widely available in India. The two-year study was carried out by the Indian Council of Medical Research. Over 1,200 volunteers from the length and breadth of the country had their penises measured precisely, down to the last millimetre. The scientists even checked their sample was representative of India as a whole in terms of class, religion and urban and rural dwellers. It's not size, it's what you do with it that matters Sunil Mehra The conclusion of all this scientific endeavour is that about 60% of Indian men have penises which are between three and five centimetres shorter than international standards used in condom manufacture. Doctor Chander Puri, a specialist in reproductive health at the Indian Council of Medical Research, told the BBC there was an obvious need in India for custom-made condoms, as most of those currently on sale are too large. The issue is serious because about one in every five times a condom is used in India it either falls off or tears, an extremely high failure rate. And the country already has the highest number of HIV infections of any nation. 'Not a problem' Mr Puri said that since Indians would be embarrassed about going to a chemist to ask for smaller condoms there should be vending machines dispensing different sizes all around the country. "Smaller condoms are on sale in India. But there is a lack of awareness that different sizes are available. There is anxiety talking about the issue. And normally one feels shy to go to a chemist's shop and ask for a smaller size condom." But Indian men need not be concerned about measuring up internationally according to Sunil Mehra, the former editor of the Indian version of the men's magazine Maxim. "It's not size, it's what you do with it that matters," he said. "From our population, the evidence is Indians are doing pretty well. "With apologies to the poet Alexander Pope, you could say, for inches and centimetres, let fools contend." … [Read more...]

Iran's parliament speaker calls for 'harshest punishment'

Iranian security forces clash with protesters in Tehran on December 27, 2009. STORY HIGHLIGHTS * Larijani said "no mercy" should be shown to protesters who disrupted Ashura observances * The influential speaker said protesters had insulted Imam Hussein * At least eight people killed in protests, although security forces deny killing anyone * Deadliest protest since June demonstrations following disputed presidential election (CNN) -- Iran's influential parliament speaker Ali Larijani said Tuesday that authorities should mete out "the harshest punishment" to protesters who disrupted Ashura observances. Addressing lawmakers, Larijani said the protesters had insulted Imam Hussein, whose death is commemorated during the religious observance. He urged officials to "arrest offenders of the religion and mete out harshest punishments to such anti-revolutionary figures with no mercy." Larijani also slammed Britain and the United States for condemning a government crackdown on the weekend's protesters, and said Iran would summon Britain's ambassador in Tehran to protest. The protests were the deadliest since June demonstrations followed the nation's disputed presidential election. They left at least eight dead, though the Iranian government denied its security forces killed anyone. RELATED TOPICS * Iran * Iranian Politics * Protests and Demonstrations Police arrested hundreds of people, including prominent figures. Nobel Laureate Shirin Ebadi told CNN on Monday that Iranian intelligence officials had detained her sister, dentistry professor Nushin Ebadi. Among the dead was the nephew of opposition presidential candidate Mir Hossein Moussavi. Moussavi's Web site said the nephew, Seyed Ali Moussavi, was killed in the demonstrations by a shot to the heart. The Islamic Republic News Agency said the bullet came from a "terror team," and that other such teams were operating in Tehran, the nation's capital. It did not offer further details. The news agency also disputed an account on the reformist Web site Parlemannews, which said the nephew's body had disappeared. It said the government is holding the body and four others for autopsies. The delay meant the dead could not be buried within 24 hours, as Islamic custom dictates. An Iranian media blackout has made it difficult to verify accounts of the weekend's violence, but videos that found their way west depicted bloodied and, in some cases, apparently dead protesters. Human-rights group Amnesty International on Monday urged Iranian authorities to ensure that those attending the funerals of the weekend's victims be allowed to assemble peacefully. "The Supreme Leader and government must instruct the police to end the use of force, while leaders of the Revolutionary Guard must withdraw the Basij (militia) from demonstrations, since time and time again it has been shown that their actions are fueling conflict, leading to the loss of life," Amnesty International said. Tom Ridge: Terror suspect doesn't deserve 'full range' of rights

STORY HIGHLIGHTS * Tom Ridge, secretary of homeland security 2003-05, appears on "Larry King Live" * He comments on Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab, suspect in failed airline attack * Ridge: "I don't think he deserves the full range of protections of our criminal justice system" * He passes on criticism of Janet Napolitano, current chief of Homeland Security (CNN) -- The man who allegedly lit an explosive on board a U.S.-bound international flight deserves none of the constitutional protections afforded American citizens, a former top Bush administration official said Monday. Tom Ridge, who served as secretary of the Department of Homeland Security from 2003 to 2005, made the comments on CNN's "Larry King Live." "I take a look at this individual who has been charged criminally, does that mean he gets his Miranda warnings? The only information we get is if he volunteers it?" Ridge said. "He's not a citizen of this country. He's a terrorist, and I don't think he deserves the full range of protections of our criminal justice system embodied in the Constitution of the United States." Ridge also said he was "not surprised" about reports that two former detainees in the detention center at the U.S. Naval Base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, had joined up with the group that claimed responsibility for Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab's failed terrorist attack. "It's a symptom of a larger challenge that this country has, and that's how do you adjudicate these individuals that we pick up from these places and make a determination if they should be incarcerated for a long time, if not permanently," he said. Muhamad Attik al-Harbi, also known as Muhamad al-Awfi, and Said Ali Shari were released to Saudi Arabia in 2007 by the Bush administration. Why the State Department didn't revoke his visa immediately is beyond belief, in my judgment. --Tom Ridge on terror suspect Umar Farouk AbdulMutallab RELATED TOPICS * U.S. Department of Homeland Security * Tom Ridge * Janet Napolitano The two went through a "rehabilitation" program in Saudi Arabia but returned to the militants. U.S. officials, however, cautioned that the two could not be connected with Friday's attack. Ridge told King that the country is "clearly ... safer, but it's equally clear, given the several incidents that have occurred in the last couple of months in this country, that we still have very serious gaps in information-sharing." "What are we going to do to make sure more information, particularly with that kind of information that sends warning signals out, gets to the people that can act on it?" he said. "Whether you're in the battlefield in Iraq or Afghanistan or a screener at the airport, you need actionable information. I'm not sure all this information was in the hands of TSA at the time." Ridge also questioned why the State Department did not revoke AbdulMutallab's visa upon learning that his father had reported his son might have terrorist connections. 7 Golden Rules For Phone Calls

d6dca8ae57bea1642c85f8ab83eacbe8

So, you've finally scored a phone number from that girl you've been working up your nerve to approach. You know how important the first telephone conversation will be and your nerves are rattled. So now what? Telephone etiquette is a central part of the general impression you give a woman. Indeed, many disastrous conversations could be avoided if more people would simply think before dialing. So, if you are rusty, telephone challenged or even if you have been playing the field regularly, it can't hurt to fine-tune your game. While most supposed dating experts will give you dozens of telephone strategies to follow, we prefer to keep things simple. The seven tips below are all you need to develop a polished telephone personality and make a killer first impression. 1- Keep conversations short Whether you are a busy corporate attorney, self-employed or even unemployed, you always want to give her the impression that you lead a full, active life. By keeping your initial telephone conversations brief, you will give her the impression that you are busy and in demand. As an added bonus, if you are always the one ending the conversations, it will keep you in a position of control, leaving her wanting more and more of your time. 2- Leave on a high note She'll always remember what you said last. Therefore, before ending a conversation, make an effort to leave on a positive note, such as with a well thought-out joke or a funny story. Even if your entire telephone conversation went poorly, if you leave her smiling before saying goodbye, she is more likely to want to speak to you again -- and hopefully see you in person -- which, of course, is your ultimate goal. 3- Have a purpose to your call Don't just call to chitchat. We cannot stress this enough: preparation, preparation, preparation. Be armed and ready with a purpose to your call (the most likely purpose being to ask her out, of course); this will give her the impression that you are assertive and thoughtful enough to think of a plan beforehand. This plan will also serve as a backup weapon should there be an awkward silence in the conversation or if her voice mail picks up. What tone to use, when to leave a message, what time of day to call, and more as we continue our 7 golden rules for phone calls... 4- Be positive Women might have the reputation of being natural listeners, but the truth is that she probably won't stick around if you're all about gloom and negativity. It doesn't matter if your boss is disrespectful or your coworker is incompetent -- complaints are a real turn off, especially in the early stages of a relationship. You can avoid looking needy by keeping your emotional baggage to yourself, at least at the beginning. Make a concerted effort to keep all conversations positive and the griping to a minimum. 5- Leave a message only on the second call You should avoid leaving a message on the first call; it may make you seem too needy. Herein lies perhaps the most important, and least flexible, … [Read more...]

Brits Crack Down on Computer-Abusing Police

64630ce9588a16a11caae8b77fcc4648

Almost 150 police workers forced to resign over the past five years, and almost 50 have been sacked outright, for, among other infractions, watching porn on police computers LONDON—The Big Brother known as England has been battling with negligible success the proliferation of pornography for many years, even, it appears, within the ranks of its police. New figures released under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that a relatively high number of law enforcement employees have been disciplined over the past five years for misusing official computers. “A total of 2,383 employees have been investigated for computer misuse since 2005,” reports the Sun, “and the number of people caught breaking the rules is increasing annually.” In fact, the paper says the number of investigations has increased more than 50 percent in just three years, from 398 in 2005 to 600 in 2008, the latest year for which figures are available. “It was also revealed that some 30 pornographic pictures and videos were found stored on a police computer during a routine ICT system health check in 2008,” says the Sun. But porn is not the only pastime of the Bobbies. It turns out social networking sites such as Facebook also are favorites of the British police, and that 10 Cheshire police workers “have been carpeted for using social networking sites.” We don’t know if by “carpeted” they mean fired or something less final, but it sounds serious enough. The Sun also reports that critics of the police are adamant that police should stop “larking around on their computers and catch criminals instead.” If larking means something akin to fapping, we certainly agree. … [Read more...]

Joe Francis Threatens to Sue Gawker Over ‘Rapist’ Claim

1d687c032bad7be9fbb0452044d3ec87

GGW founder goes wild over ‘Douchebag of the Decade’ tribute LOS ANGELES—In the battle over who has the biggest (and stupidest) mouths of all—Joe Francis or the Gawker editorial gang—it has to be a draw. While each regularly takes vicious hyperbole to depths heretofore unknown to mankind, the latest public tête-à-tête between the two blatant media whores ... I mean, companies ... breaks any and all previous records for shameless overstatement, and might just result in a lawsuit. Francis is threatening legal action after Gawker last week named him their “Douche of the Decade.” In presenting the honor, however, Gawker’s Alex Pareene let his rhetoric do his thinking for him and for all intents and purposes called Francis a rapist. The article currently refers to him as an “alleged” rapist, but it appears as if the powers that be might have added a word, especially considering the half-hearted (and bitchy) mea culpa added to a subsequent Gawker post. “Update: Okay, fine. After some consideration, we're sorry for calling you "a rapist" since you are more accurately "an alleged rapist." After all, we've never seen you doing the raping, only read about it,” wrote Gabriel Snyder Monday. In the original Dec. 22 post, however, there was little evidence of any sensitivity to what Francis has actually done and what has been alleged, proven or admitted to, links to other sources notwithstanding. “Kidnapping and non-penetrative dildo-menacing were not enough to stop the man who declared that he'd been "anally raped over and over by the media" shortly after literally assaulting a female reporter assigned to profile him. He palled around with our more tragic and douchey celebs,” wrote Pareene. “We had a shot at putting him in jail for good, but the hundreds of hours of underaged porn from his homes and plane was seized without proper search warrants.” Despite the aforementioned editing and apology, however, the site still rings off with these words of holiday cheer. “Joe Francis! You have made the world a worse place! You have assaulted and raped! You have degraded thousands! You are a terrible human being! You are Gawker's Douche of the Decade!” Sunday night, Francis replied in kind. “Last night,” wrote Gawker’s Gabriel Snyder, “Francis emailed a nastygram (with a prize inside!) to our vacationing overlord Nick Denton, myself, three attorneys (Cyrus J. Nownejad, Brad Brian, David P. Schack), and for good measure two media contacts: Mike Waters, the news manager at TMZ, and Richard Johnson, the editor of the New York Post's Page Six.” “Hey Nick,” it reads, in part, “I’m suing you tomorrow personally. You messed with the wrong guy. No one makes up lies about me and gets away with it. I lost a 10 million dollar deal as a direct result of you calling me ‘a rapist’. You will be paying every dime of that back and more. Are you mentally retarded?” It continues in a similar vein, including an uppercase … [Read more...]

Rikers officer busted sleeping on job

nadja_green-300x300

Maybe the inmates really are running the asylum. A correction officer has been disciplined for dozing on the job after a colleague snapped a picture of her asleep while on post at a Rikers Island infirmary, officials said yesterday. A clearly conked-out Nadja Green is leaning in a chair with her head back, arms folded, eyes closed and mouth open. But even more alarming is an amused inmate seen hovering above her, mere inches from a set of keys that hangs from her belt. The picture was circulated around the department, and a source e-mailed it to The Post. NAP FLAP: Correction officer Nadja Green, conked-out in a chair beside an amused Rikers Island inmate, faces disciplinary charges after a fellow guard snapped this phone pic at the prison infirmary. Freddy A. Cepeda NAP FLAP: Correction officer Nadja Green, conked-out in a chair beside an amused Rikers Island inmate, faces disciplinary charges after a fellow guard snapped this phone pic at the prison infirmary. Green was transferred on the island and placed on modified duty watching female inmates. She will face charges of sleeping on the job and other security- and performance-related charges. "We do not expect this type of behavior or performance from our officers, nor do we tolerate it," said city correction spokesman Steve Morello. The officer who took the picture, Claudel Barrau, was also transferred and placed on modified duty. Morello said possession and use of cellphones in jails, even by guards, is prohibited. "They are only allowed to carry a cell into a property locker and not into jail proper," Morello said. "And not where inmates circulate. It's a basic and obvious regulation and this represents a breach." Officials said the embarrassing photo was taken earlier this month in the prison's North Infirmary Command, formerly Rikers Island Hospital, which houses nearly 400 sick prisoners. The facility includes a wing for AIDS patients, one for sex offenders and one for exceptionally violent inmates. The disciplined officers will not be supervising inmates, according to officials. Morello said the picture was brought to the attention of the department's senior management. He said officials do not believe the sleeping officer was ever in any danger. There will be no charges against the inmate in the picture. Green, who turned 30 yesterday, has been on the job 4½ years. She lives in Queens and could not be reached for comment. Barrau, 47, has been on the job 18 years. When approached by a Post photographer at his Long Island home, he asked, "Why are you taking my picture?" A prison source described Green as "the Precious of Corrections," a reference to the movie about a teen from a dysfunctional family. A source said Green had a difficult upbringing and is the mother of several children. The source said she worked 96 hours of overtime this month. A union official said prison authorities should avoid a rush to judgment. "Many correction officers are forced to work 70 to 80 … [Read more...]
