Facebook Worm Attacks Firefox Users

f3e3f25e2565d59c7778160e6c9332b6

LOS ANGELES — Firefox users visiting Facebook could be in for a nasty surprise as a mischievous worm may hijack their browser to spread links to porn sites — all without the user's knowledge. In the attack, visitors to the popular social networking website might see an image of a thong-clad woman, posted on a friend's Facebook wall. When clicked, the visitor is sent to a web page that bears a button stating, "click this button." Those who click that button activate the worm, which updates their user settings and posts the thong image and link to the user's wall, spreading the link virally. According to a Facebook spokesperson, the company blocked links to the offending URL and is now removing the malicious links from user's walls. "Overall, an extremely small percentage of users were affected," the spokesperson said. "As always, we're asking people not to click on suspicious links, even if they've been sent or posted by friends." Security specialist Roger Thompson posted a demo of the attack on YouTube. "[The photo link] advertises to all your friends that you went there, so it could get you in trouble with your spouse, family member or your employer if you're doing it at work," Thompson said, adding, "it seems an awfully good hack just to direct people to an adult website for very small gain." The worm reportedly does not affect visitors using Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser. … [Read more...]

FriendFinder Networks Sues Beleaguered Accounting Firm

Penthouse parent says its accountant failed to account for $80M in EU taxes; accountant says FFN is passing the blame for a deal it regrets. BOCA RATON, Fla.—FriendFinder Networks (FFN) has reportedly filed a $50 million lawsuit against its accounting firm, Grant Thornton, alleging accounting malpractice for what it says is the firm’s failure to account for taxes owed the European Union. “In early 2007, Penthouse Media was contemplating the acquisition of Various Inc., which runs the swingers' Web site Adultfriendfinder.com,” Courthouse News Service reported Wednesday. “The porn industry giant hired accountants at Grant Thornton to outline the assets and liabilities of Various in a broad-based financial review, according to Friendfinder's complaint in Palm Beach County Court.” Penthouse bought Various for $500 million in December 2007, but Friendfinder alleges that its huge tax debt wasn't factored into the price. It claims accountants at Grant Thornton neglected to note more than $80 million in online service taxes that Various owed the European Union, and that the tax exposure was nowhere to be found in Grant Thornton's final report. “In 2003, the EU implemented a blanket value-added tax on foreign online and electronic services that reach end users in certain European countries,” said Courthouse News. “Various didn't pay the taxes and accrued a sizeable debt that never was resolved.” Marc Bell, CEO and president of FriendFinder Networks, returned a call from AVN with a “polite no comment.” A Grant Thornton spokesperson replied to an AVN query with the following comment: "We have not been served with a Complaint in this matter. Management appears to be inappropriately passing off responsibility for an acquisition that may not have met their expectations." “In its accounting malpractice complaint against Grant Thornton, Friendfinder claims that when the legal expenses are counted, the damage exceeds $50 million,” says Courthouse News. “Friendfinder also says its public stock offering has been delayed by entanglements arising from the debt.” Even without the FriendFinder lawsuit, this has not been a great week for Grant Thornton. On Monday, CNN International reported on a fraud allegation involving its Hong Kong division. “Grant Thornton Hong Kong and the accountant's international network face potentially damaging fresh claims regarding their responsibility in an alleged multimillion-dollar fraud committed by a former managing partner in the city,” CNN reported. “According to allegations made in a new writ filed in Hong Kong last Friday, seen by the Financial Times, Grant Thornton HK and Grant Thornton International are "vicariously liable" for a $10.3m fraud allegedly committed by Gabriel Azedo, whose whereabouts are unknown.” On Wednesday, Silicon Alley Insider reported on yet another feud involving Grant Thornton, this time with former client Overstock.com. “The pissing match between Overstock … [Read more...]

Update – Goldman Obscenity Pleadings Heat Up

31c426af4d7063892e4884111c10d563

NEWARK, N.J.—After federal defender Lisa Mack's excellent brief detailing the multi-year machinations the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) used to snag adult performer Barry Goldman in an interstate mailing of obscene materials sting, there wasn't much prosecutors Bonnie Hannan and Pamela Satterfield could do—except ignore it. "Evidence of the former prosecution in Montana is irrelevant to these proceedings," the Justice Department attorneys wrote in their Response To Defendant's Opposition to the Government's Motion in Limine. "The jury in this case will be charged with deciding whether or not the defendant, on three separate occasions, mailed obscene movies from New Jersey to locations in Montana and Virginia. ... The defendant seeks to admit into evidence the entire procedural history of this case and the internal decision-making process in the Department of Justice, but these matters shed no light on the issue of whether the defendant mailed obscene materials in violation of the laws of the United States. Providing the jury with such information will not help them assess whether or not the government has proven its case using the Miller standard." As far as the government is concerned, the fact that it first tried to manufacture jurisdiction—by having FBI agent Angela McCravey order the movies in question (Torture of a Porn Store Girl, Defiant Crista Submits and Pregnant and Willing) to be sent to Montana and Virginia to overcome the Attorney General's prohibition on indictments in jurisdictions where potential defendants have had no or minimal prior contact—is irrelevant. Similarly, the Justice Department's refusal, more than three years ago, to indict Goldman for the same movies in his home state of New Jersey—or in the Southern District of New York, where the movies' producer was based—was equally of "no probative value." "The only evidence which would be relevant to these proceedings regarding the movies sent to Virginia and Montana is any factual evidence that proves that these movies were mailed by the defendant to those jurisdictions," Hannan and Satterfield claim. "Beyond that, it adds nothing to the case to speculate why the government ordered the defendant’s movies into Virginia and Montana. The defendant, by introducing such highly speculative information, would do nothing more than inflame the passions of the jury by insinuating that the government had bad motives in its investigation of these alleged crimes. Such evidence would be unhelpful and even confusing to the jury. It is not proper to look at the alleged motives of the government in bringing this case originally in Montana and eventually indicting the case in New Jersey." Yeah! Only someone who's old enough to remember disgraced president Richard Nixon's "enemies list," which the IRS used as a roadmap to mounting tax audits, or unindicted co-conspirator Vice President Dick Cheney's outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame to silence her husband's criticism of … [Read more...]

Swype Set to Challenge iPhone Onscreen Keyboard

f17882ce52e5f4af9de72d666505e32e

SEATTLE — A new technology is poised to challenge Apple's onscreen keyboard for speed and ease of use: Swype. The iPhone has achieved a high level of popularity in the adult industry not only for its powerful video capability, but also for its next-gen support for useful apps. Many industry professionals use the iPhone and other mobile devices to update their Twitter profiles and other social networking profiles. Swype offers an alternative to the iPhone onscreen keyboard by letting users swipe their fingertips across the keyboard, in effect drawing a connected line between all the letters in their message. This demonstration shows a Swype user beating an iPhone user in a race to type a simple message. It's a competing technology being developed for the Verizon Samsung Omnia II, which runs on the Windows Mobile OS. Android-powered devices will come bundled with Swype support in the first quarter of 2010. TechCrunch analyst Eric Schonfeld expressed optimism for the new tech, although he cautioned against hype. "A practiced iPhone typer can bang out a few sentences just as fast," he said in reference to the demonstration video. "I tried it myself and was able to basically tie the Swype user on the video. Still, I’ll withhold judgment until I can actually try a Swype phone myself." … [Read more...]

Pentagon preparing to send 34,000 troops to Afghanistan, official says

* NEW: NATO allies will also be asked to send more troops, officials say * Announcement on troop increase to come after Thanksgiving * Obama met with national security team Monday night to discuss Afghanistan * Obama wanted clarification on how, when U.S. troops would turn over responsibility Washington (CNN) -- The Pentagon is making detailed plans to send about 34,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan in anticipation of President Obama's decision on the future of the eight-year-old war, a defense official said Tuesday. Obama held a lengthy meeting with top advisers Monday night and said Tuesday that he would announce plans for Afghanistan after the Thanksgiving holiday. A Defense Department official with direct knowledge of the process said there has been no final word on the president's decision. But planners have been tasked with preparing to send 34,000 additional American troops into battle with the expectation that is the number Obama is leaning toward approving, the official said. Obama ordered more than 20,000 additional troops to Afghanistan in March. Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the U.S. commander in Afghanistan, reportedly has called for up to 40,000 more to wage a counterinsurgency campaign against the Taliban, the Islamic militia originally ousted by the U.S. invasion in 2001. The president has weighed several options for bolstering the American contingent, ranging from sending a few thousand troops to sending the 40,000 McChrystal requested. McChrystal was among those who took part in Monday's conference with Obama and other top advisers, which broke up at 10 p.m. Vice President Joe Biden, Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Michael Mullen and Karl Eikenberry, the U.S. ambassador in Kabul, were among the other senior officials in the meeting. Obama said Tuesday that the deliberations have been "comprehensive and extremely useful." "It's going to be important to recognize that in order for us to succeed there, you've got to have a comprehensive strategy that includes civilian and diplomatic efforts," he said at a news conference Tuesday with visiting Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The military has planning under way to send these units: three U.S. Army brigades, totaling about 15,000 troops; a Marine brigade with about 8,000 troops; a headquarters element of about 7,000; and between 4,000 and 5,000 support troops -- a total of approximately 34,000 troops, according to a defense official with direct knowledge of Pentagon operations. CNN reported last month that this was the preferred option within the Pentagon. The troops would be dispatched throughout Afghanistan but would be focused mainly on the southern and southeastern provinces, where much of the recent fighting has taken place. China Cracks Down on WAP Adult Sites

8d218379e74e52bb5acc91a8b12089c8

BEIJING — On the heels of a deal that will bring the iPhone to China, the government's antiporn crusade continues against adult, this time in mobile territory. China's Ministry of Public Security (MPS) has targeted sites that use Wireless Application Protocol, or WAP. Any user who has surfed the web on a mobile device should be familiar with WAP, which streamlines standard websites for easier delivery through mobile browsers. An official with the MPS said that efforts to block such sites will last through the end of 2009 because of the long, complex chain of connections that lead overseas from such sites. In the meantime, the ministry will concentrate its efforts on the cities of Shanghai, Beijing, Guangdong, Zhejiang and Anhui. According to the ministry, many WAP sites are registered in those cities. But are they offending sites? The Chinese government said yes. Its whistleblowing office, the China Internet Illegal Information Reporting Center, said that reports of adult WAP sites have been on the rise. The arrests are already starting to roll in. According to online reports, Chinese officials have detained more than 1,100 people, all while shutting down almost 7,000 websites. Of that number, only 586 are confirmed adult sites. In August, Apple signed a multiyear deal with Chinese wireless carrier Unicom to sell the iPhone in the fourth quarter of 2009. Unicom is a state-owned company that boasts 650 million mobile phone accounts. … [Read more...]

Porn Worm 'Clickjacks' Facebook Walls

c9d879ea9eac29d2382763fa290fa29c

The social networking giant says it has squashed the worm in its tracks PALO ALTO, Calif.—A somewhat nefarious worm has reportedly been making the rounds of Facebook profiles, spreading itself through member's Walls and redirecting those who click on its image to a porn site. The social networking behemoth says it has put an end to what it calls a clear case of "clickjacking." The wall worm, which apparently spread quickly starting Sunday, posted an image on a Facebook Wall with a photo of a woman in a bikini and the message "click 'da button, baby." Wall posts are viewable by a Facebook user's friends. "If a friend clicks on the image and is logged into Facebook," PC World reported Monday, "the image is then is posted to their own Wall. Their Web browser will then open a Web page with a larger version of the same image. A further click on "da button" redirects the friend to a pornography site." According to Softpedia, the most recent attack doesn't appear to have had a malicious component and was most likely a proof of concept attack intended to show the effectiveness of clickjacking. "Clickjacking is a term referring to an entire class of attacks that affect all browsers and involve overlapping hidden buttons onto visible ones. Therefore, when a user attempts to click the legit button in order to perform an apparently harmless action, their mouse click is hijacked and used to trigger an unintended one," writes Lucian Constantin. "A growing concern amongst the infosec community and browser vendors have yet to completely address it, the technique is actually exploiting an architectural flaw at the core of the Web; therefore, it is difficult to mitigate without breaking other legit functionality." Facebook engineers reportedly jumped on the problem and say they have it under control. "This problem isn’t specific to Facebook, but we’re always working to improve our systems and are building additional protections against this type of behavior," Facebook spokesman Simon Axten wrote in an email. "We’ve blocked the URL associated with this site, and we’re cleaning up the relatively few cases where it was posted (something email providers, for example, can’t do)." It also appears a number of normally astute surfers were taken in by the ruse. "Facebook warned users not to click on suspicious links," writes PC. "However, in this case, the link doesn't stand out as necessarily suspicious given the variety of Wall postings, graphics and applications that appear all over the popular social-networking site. "In fact, one security researcher inadvertently reposted the suspect graphic before realizing something wasn't right. 'This shows that even experts can become complacent and trust systems when they really shouldn't,' wrote Gadi Evron, an independent security researcher, on Dark Reading's blog." … [Read more...]

Top 10: Reasons Sex Makes Men Healthier

23b9501debbe3f62b501f9466239b461

It’s a well-known fact that most men don’t need more reasons to have sex, but how many guys actually stop to think about the fact that sex could play a key role in their overall health and well-being? Regular sexual activity is more than recreational; good sexual health is vital to a man’s overall physical, psychological and emotional health. Sex can potentially benefit everything from a man’s short-term mood, to longer-term issues like cardiovascular health and the reduced risk of prostate cancer. In addition, sex is a cost-effective and enjoyable way to ensure your long-term health. It’s cheaper than a gym membership and a lot better for your waistline than a nightly six pack. With the average man being more mindful than ever about both his budget and his health, sex might be just what the doctor ordered. Here are 10 reasons sex makes men healthier -- so get busy tonight. No.10 - Calorie burn While sex alone may not be enough to create bulging biceps and washboard abs, intercourse definitely gets the blood pumping by raising the heart rate and burning calories. Estimates show that an average session between the sheets can burn 85 to upwards of 200 calories in 30 minutes. If you spent half an hour having sex daily, that could lead to a weight loss of 10 pounds or more over the course of a year. And it’s hopefully more fun than a run on the treadmill. No.9 - Strength training In addition to burning calories, sex aids in testosterone production, which can strengthen bones and muscles. Testosterone is also responsible for maintaining healthy energy levels, mood, fertility, and sexual desire. So having sex today could help keep your sex drive up down the road. Decreasing testosterone levels, known as andropause or male menopause, can result in a number of side effects including decreased libido, fatigue and depression, among others. No.8 - Cancer prevention A number of studies show that men who ejaculate on a regular basis are more than 30% less likely to develop prostate cancer. Regular ejaculation, whether from intercourse or masturbation, help flush out the prostate, which may help curb the development of prostate cancer. No.7 - Improved cardiovascular health Because sex is a good form of exercise, it makes sense that it would positively impact the health of your heart. A study from Queens University shows that men who have sex more than three times a week cut their risk of heart attack and stroke in half. Sex has also been shown to lower blood pressure, which further accounts for the overall positive impact on cardiovascular health. No.6 - Stress relief The decreased blood pressure that can result from sex could help lower your stress level. Various study participants have been shown to have a smaller rise in blood pressure during stressful situations after sex, as compared to other test subjects. Moreover, sex releases feel-good endorphins that can help lower anxiety. Who doesn’t want to forget about a tough day at the … [Read more...]
