LOS ANGELES — Was CNBC’s porn special last night too taboo for corporate America? Mediaite, which follows the media scene, reports that investment services provider Charles Schwab canceled its advertising on CNBC during the time when the business news network planned to air “Porn: Business of Pleasure.” “According to multiple sources, Charles Schwab, a regular sponsor of the ‘Fast Money’ program, as well as others, pulled its sponsorship from the program after a preview segment made it seem like Schwab was associated with the sex doc,” a story said on the site. Indeed, most of the advertising during last night’s program consisted of infomercials and of the “as seen on TV” variety. “When asked directly about Schwab’s decision to drop its sponsorships, a CNBC spokesperson told Mediaite, ‘No comment,’ but added, ‘The Business of Porn’ is a fantastic documentary which will give CNBC viewers insight into a $15 billion industry,’” Mediaite said in a post. But there always is a faction that wants to give the adult entertainment industry a hard time. On Monday, news site NewsBusters.org, owned by the Christian-based Media Research Center, included a story titled, “CNBC Special Promotes Porn.” The story’s lead read, “’Porn: Business of Pleasure’ is nothing more than an attempt to normalize, and even promote, the porn industry.” Meanwhile, CNBC switches gears away from porn when it airs another documentary about prostitution tonight. “Dirty Money: The Business of High-End Prostitution” airs at 10 p.m. … [Read more...]

Former CBS anchor 'Uncle Walter' Cronkite dead at 92
(CNN) -- Walter Cronkite, the CBS anchorman known as "Uncle Walter" for his easygoing, measured delivery and "the most trusted man in America" for his rectitude and gravitas, has died, CBS reported Friday. Walter Cronkite, former CBS anchor known as "Uncle Walter," has died. 1 of 2 more photos » Cronkite was 92. His career spanned much of the 20th century, as well as the first decade of the 21st. The native of St. Joseph, Missouri, broke in as a newspaper journalist while in college, switched over to radio announcing in 1935, joined the United Press wire service by the end of the decade and jumped to CBS and its nascent television news division in 1950. He also made his mark as an Internet contributor in his later years with a handful of columns for the Huffington Post. "He was the consummate television newsman," Don Hewitt, the onetime executive producer of the CBS Evening News, told CNN. "He had all the credentials to be a writer, an editor, a broadcaster. There was only one Walter Cronkite, and there may never be another one." Cronkite covered World War II's Battle of the Bulge, the Nuremberg trials, several presidential elections, moon landings, the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the Watergate scandal of President Richard Nixon's administration. At times he even made news: A 1977 question to then-Egyptian President Anwar Sadat about Sadat's intent to go to Israel -- at the time considered a nonstarter because of the lack of a treaty between the two countries -- received a surprising "yes" from the Egyptian leader. Soon after, Sadat traveled to Jerusalem, a trip that eventually led to the Camp David Accords, which included a peace deal between Israel and Egypt. Cronkite's life in photos » At his height of influence as CBS anchorman, Cronkite's judgment was believed so important it could affect even presidents. In early 1968, after the Tet Offensive, Cronkite traveled to Vietnam and gave a critical editorial calling the Vietnam War "mired in stalemate." Watch an overview of Cronkite's life » Noting Cronkite's commentary, President Lyndon Johnson reportedly said, "If I've lost Cronkite, I've lost Middle America." Johnson announced he would not seek re-election less than two months later. Cronkite's own name was often floated as a presidential possibility -- wishful thinking on the part of some pundits, because Cronkite had little desire to enter politics once he'd become a successful anchorman. Don't Miss Special report: Life of Walter Cronkite Time.com: 1981: The age of Cronkite passes Statement from CBS He became, however, an outspoken critic of what he saw as flaws in government and broadcast journalism. He disliked the current war in Iraq, telling Esquire magazine, "Indeed, we are in another Vietnam. Almost play by play. It's a terrible mistake that we're in Iraq, and it's a terrible mistake to insist on staying there." And he disliked the corporatization of news. LeaseWeb Powers New Heineken.nl Website

Wednesday, Jul 15, 2009 Text size: AMSTERDAM — European dedicated hosting provider LeaseWeb has announced the launch of beer giant Heineken's new website, Heineken.nl, on its 'green' VMware-based hosting solution.According to the company, the Heineken.nl website is a portal that not only provides information in the form of a comprehensive musical and sports agenda, but also features a web shop where visitors can reserve and purchase various extras, including music downloads and tickets to sold-out concerts — and use the site's so-called Heineken "e's" platform–exclusive currency to pay for those special offers. With the LeaseWeb solution, several VMware Virtual Machines provide the necessary hardware-based servers for the new site, as well as network equipment; such as a firewall and a load balancer. "Our engineers have extensive knowledge of VMware, and will — where necessary — provide support to Heineken with regard to maintenance and/or supplements to the existing web environment," Ruud Mous, sales director of LeaseWeb, said. According to LeaseWeb, its hosting network ensures that consumers can make unlimited use of the Heineken.nl website, offering more than 750 Gigabits per second of bandwidth, benefitting websites with heavy traffic, multimedia applications and/or streaming video — such as the new Heineken.nl site. "Virtual hosting is particularly attractive to the enterprise market and the higher segment of the small and medium-sized business sector," Mous added. "A corporate hosting environment such as Heineken.nl, in particular, benefits from a virtualized solution compared to a purely hardware-based solution. Examples of such benefits include scalability and availability. It also makes migrations much simpler, and it does not affect the applications." Heineken.nl's download shop reportedly offers more than 2,500 CDs and 650 DVDs, with more than 500 downloads also available. There is a web shop offering Heineken branded merchandise, such as clothing, beer glasses, bags and wristwatches; as well as a ticket shop operated in collaboration with Ticket Online, where visitors can order tickets for various events. According to a LeaseWeb release, the Heineken.nl website allows consumers to pay with a Heineken E-Card, a full-fledged VISA credit card specially designed and customized for Heineken; and can also use the E-Card to save "e's" — making this the payment and savings method at Heineken.nl. This system allows each purchase using the Heineken E-Card to collect "e's" that make the buyer eligible for a variety of special offers. "The primary objective of Heineken.nl is not to sell more beer, but rather to encourage our customers to feel even more strongly connected to the brand by offering them tangible benefits, priority and privileges, in order to make their night out even more enjoyable," Heineken.nl Marketing Director Herwin van den Berg added. … [Read more...]

Debbie Rowe's lawyer: No deal in Jackson case
LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- No deal has been reached between Michael Jackson's mother and his ex-wife over the custody of the late singer's children, according to a lawyer in the case. Debbie Rowe is the biological mother of Paris (left) and Prince Michael Jackson. 1 of 2 Eric George, who represents Debbie Rowe, the biological mother of Jackson's two oldest children, demanded Tuesday that the New York Post retract its report that Rowe had agreed to take $4 million not to challenge Katherine Jackson for custody. In a letter sent Tuesday afternoon to the newspaper's editor, George said the report "can only have been concocted with reckless disregard for the truth." "There has been no agreement reached between Ms. Rowe and the Jacksons," George said. While George said Rowe still has not decided if she will ask the court for custody or visitation, he said she will not try to get money from the Jackson family. "Ms. Rowe has not accepted -- and will not accept -- any additional financial consideration beyond the spousal support she and Michael Jackson personally agreed to several years ago," George said. The couple divorced in 1999 with Rowe giving Jackson full custody while she got a $8.5 million settlement, according to court documents. Jackson later agreed to additional support. Jackson's lawyer has not responded to requests for comment Tuesday. The Jackson family lawyer said last week that they were working to "privately and amicably resolve" the matter. A child custody court hearing, which had been set for this week, was delayed until next Monday at the request of lawyers for Jackson and Rowe, a court official said. Katherine Jackson gained temporary guardianship of the children soon after her son's death last month. The New York Post, quoting an unidentified Jackson family source, reported Rowe had agreed to drop any custody challenge for a $4 million payment. Watch a discussion of the legal issues of the case » "Among the several contenders for overzealous and inaccurate sensationalism, the New York Post has now seized top honors," George wrote to the paper. "It would be easier to identify those few background facts that are accurate than to catalog the number of blatant falsehoods in your story." Don't Miss Complete Michael Jackson coverage Jackson and Rowe married in 1996 and their first child -- Michael Joseph Jackson Jr. -- was born in February 1997. A daughter -- Paris-Michael Katherine Jackson -- was born the next year. The two met when Rowe was working as a nursing assistant in the Beverly Hills office of Jackson's dermatologist, Dr. Arnold Klein. Rowe said in a 2003 interview, later obtained by ABC News, that she became close to Jackson in 1996 when she consoled him after his brief marriage to Lisa Marie Presley ended. "He was upset because he really wanted to be a dad," Rowe said. "I said, 'So, be a dad.' He looked at me puzzled. That is when I looked at him and said. 'Let me do this. I want to do this. Sotomayor hearing starts with Leahy praise
Sotomayor hearing starts with Leahy praise Supreme Court nominee Judge Sonia Sotomayor, accompanied by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., center, and the committee's ranking Republican Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., prepares to testify before the committee, Monday, July 13, 2009, on Capitol Hill in Washington. (AP Photo/Ron Edmonds) By David Espo and Mark Sherman WASHINGTON—On the cusp of history, Sonia Sotomayor listened intently in a packed Senate hearing room Monday as lawmakers began confirmation hearings on her appointment as the nation's first Hispanic Supreme Court justice. Discuss COMMENTS (25) Related Live video Sotomayor confirmation hearing "She's been a judge for all Americans. She'll be a justice for all Americans," said Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., chairman of the Judiciary Committee and an avid supporter of the nomination. In opening remarks, Leahy likened Sotomayor to other judicial pioneers, citing Thurgood Marshall, the first black justice seated on the high court, as well as Louis Brandeis, the first Jew, and Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman. "Let no one demean this extraordinary woman," Leahy said in a warning to committee Republicans to tread lightly in the days ahead. Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the senior Republican, vowed a "respectful tone" and "maybe some disagreements" when lawmakers begin questioning Sotomayor on Tuesday. He underscored that point a few moments later, saying, "I will not vote for, and no senator should vote for" anyone who will not render justice impartially. "Call it empathy, call it prejudice or call it sympathy, but whatever it is, it's not law," he said. "In truth, it's more akin to politics and politics has no place in the courtroom." That was a clear reference to President Obama's declaration -- made before he named Sotomayor -- that he wanted a person of empathy on the high court. Obama named Sotomayor, 55 and a child of the South Bronx, to replace retiring Justice David Souter. Leahy and Sessions escorted Sotomayor to her seat before the hearing began into the first Supreme Court nominee by a Democratic president in 15 years. Outside, a small group of anti-abortion protesters opposed to her confirmation unfurled a banner that said, "Senators: Stop the Slaughter! Filibuster Sotomayor." It was unclear whether Sotomayor saw them. Inside the Senate, there was no talk of a filibuster, under which Republicans would attempt to block a vote on her nomination. Instead, barring a gaffe of major proportions, Sotomayor seemed on her way to confirmation even before Leahy rapped the opening gavel. The day's schedule included speeches from all 19 lawmakers on the committee, 12 Democrats and 7 Republicans, followed by Sotomayor's opening statement. Questioning of Sotomayor will wait for Tuesday. In the nearly seven weeks since Sotomayor's nomination, critics have labored without much success to exploit weaknesses in her record. Even as they try, Republican senators … [Read more...]
