Adobe Reports Critical Flash Vulnerability
LOS ANGELES — Adobe has issued a warning about a critical vulnerability in the current versions of some of its most popular software products; the latest in a series of similar warnings to affect the software giant. According to the company, the affected programs are Flash Player (v9.0.159.0 and v10.0.22.87) for Windows, Macintosh and Linux operating systems, and the authplay.dll component that ships with Adobe Reader and Acrobat v9.x for Windows, Macintosh and UNIX operating systems. "This vulnerability (CVE-2009-1862) could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system," stated a company release. "There are reports that this vulnerability is being actively exploited in the wild via limited, targeted attacks against Adobe Reader v9 on Windows." Adobe is in the process of developing a fix and expects to provide an update for Flash Player before July 30 and an update for Adobe Reader and Acrobat by July 31. "Deleting, renaming, or removing access to the authplay.dll file that ships with Adobe Reader and Acrobat v9.x mitigates the threat for those products, but users will experience a non-exploitable crash or error message when opening a PDF that contains SWF content," Adobe advises. According to the company, the authplay.dll that ships with Adobe Reader and Acrobat 9.x for Windows is typically located at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\authplay.dll or C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0]\Acrobat\authplay.dll. "Windows Vista users should consider enabling UAC (User Access Control) to mitigate the impact of a potential exploit. Flash Player users should exercise caution in browsing untrusted websites," Adobe further cautioned, adding that "Adobe is in contact with Antivirus and Security vendors regarding the issue and recommend users keep their anti-virus definitions up to date." John Bambenek of US-CERT's SANS Internet Storm Center says that the vulnerability is currently being exploited by malicious sites as well as via link injection into legitimate websites as part of a drive-by attack. Fla. Town Manager Fired; Adult Performer Wife a 'Distraction'
FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. — Town Manager William Scott Janke was fired Tuesday during an emergency city council meeting, which was called when it was discovered that Janke's wife was adult performer Jazella Moore. S.F. Holds Gentlemen’s Club Job Fair, Reports Low Industry Downturn
SAN FRANCISCO — Representatives from nearly a dozen gentlemen’s clubs, including the Hustler Club, Gold Club and Centerfolds, gathered for The Recession Resistant 2009 Job Fair on Monday. The event, which was sponsored by the Adult Hospitality Group, was held at the Holiday Inn at Fisherman’s Wharf. According to reports, about 100 job seekers attended. The Recession Resistant Job Fair included San Francisco-area strip clubs with 30 open positions such as managers, cashiers, bartenders and hosts; dancer applications also were accepted. Axel Sang of BSC Management, a consulting firm for 11 San Francisco nightclubs, told a local TV news station how strip clubs are succeeding during the recession. He said the Hustler Club of San Francisco, which BSC manages, has added drink specials and cut back menu prices. “[T]he average guy who wants a couple cocktails and dances, we still see a volume increase in that,” Sang said. “People want the value. OSHA seeks to violate state law in demanding disclosures By Mark Kernes 07/22/2009 PORN VALLEY—According to its founder, Dr. Sharon Mitchell, the Adult Industry Medical (AIM) Healthcare Foundation finds itself in the middle of a thorny dilemma involving the medical privacy of one of its patients. "Patient Zero," as that person has come to be known, has filed a civil rights lawsuit against the state Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal-OSHA) to prevent the agency from learning the person's identity and work history—and even his/her gender—which OSHA is pressing AIM to reveal, in clear violation of provisions of the California Health and Safety Code. "This is going to get really ugly and it's turning my stomach because none of it has to do with safety or health; it's doing nothing to keep the population safer," Mitchell told AVN. "This is terrible; it makes me so sick as a health professional to watch people behave in this manner, who have the same or higher degrees than I have." Although AVN has been unable to obtain copies of the suit papers, reliable sources have said that the basis of the lawsuit is that "Patient Zero," the porn star whose HIV test came back as positive on June 6, has become aware of actions taken by Cal-OSHA to attempt to learn the person's identity, including but not limited to serving an administrative subpoena on AIM, which was the clinic which drew the blood for Patient Zero's HIV test. However, both the privacy provisions of the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) as well as California's own Health and Safety Code, make it illegal for OSHA even to ask for either the identity of Patient Zero or any information that could lead to the disclosure of his/her identity, and the California code makes it a crime for AIM to provide that information, even if served with a court order to do so. Sec. 120975 of the California Health and Safety Code reads, "To protect the privacy of individuals who are the subject of blood testing for antibodies to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) ... no person shall be compelled in any state, county, city, or other local civil, criminal, administrative, legislative, or other proceedings to identify or provide identifying characteristics that would identify any individual who is the subject of a blood test to detect antibodies to HIV." Revealing someone's HIV status without their approval is a $2,500 fine, and if harm results from such a disclosure, the person responsible can face a year in jail and a $25,000 fine. "Those sections [of the Code] essentially authorize disclosure only to one entity," stated Jeffrey Douglas, one of AIM's attorneys, "and in the case of L.A. County, that is the L.A.
